- In this video we get one step closer to having the brakes finished!! Hooray!! Getting the hand wheel in place on the top of the brake column gives us the opportunity to test the brakes. This Steam Locomotive will get finished eventually.

Wait a while…. look at it…. think a bit….. all while ‘avin a cuppa’.
A strategy to minimise errors 🤣🤣🤣
Another vey entertaining and informative video Matt
👍
Robert
Absolutely Robert, Cuppa Tea is a highly important part of any project! All the best, Matt
Those are some strong brakes
Oh Yes, they have to be, very heavy steam locomotive. All the best, Matt
Thanks for the update. You are the Brakeman. 😀
Is this brake saga over yet??!?! it seems to have taken forever to get here. Haha 😂. All the best, Matt.
Nice work Matt, look forward to seeing you do an emergency stop at the park 😂
If Matt tested it in the current build state I can see him capulted across the park, he'll get to his car quicker! 🤣😂🤣😂
There will be no emergency where I need to wind the handbrake on..... its a parking brake 😉, air brakes on the train will stop me 😂. All the best, Matt
Andy, I can see my house from heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!
All the best, Matt. 👍
Lovely but of engineering as always. Although the loctite to hold the brake handle on made my teeth itch 😂😂
Thanks Paul, much appreciated. I didn't show it in the video, but I put the lathe into the lowest gear and tried to break the loctite...... the chuck was rotating, think that will be strong enough 😂. All the best, Matt.
@@MattChiversWorkshop I’m not saying it won’t hold. Just in my head it shouldn’t
Just to be The Grim Reaper, if you read the documentation regarding Loctite style adhesives, they found that a feather key or grubscrew actually reduced the effectiveness of the joint. Yes I am a Loctite convert!@@pauljones2633
Working brakes!!! :D
...When are you taking it for a rolling test on a track?
Yay!! Maybe when we've added a bit more weight to it and its running on air....sounds more likely best time for a track test! All the best, Matt.
nice job Matt
i love machining cast iron,
i've sub'd bell'd and liked, so don't blame me!!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
laterzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Kev
Thanks Kev, much appreciated as always. I've a lot of cast coming up in future episodes, I will be good by the end!
I appreciate every single person who clicked the sub, bell and like buttons.... you are all wonderful people! All the best, Matt
Smart 😀 they work well
Thanks Julia, we shall find out for sure when the weight is on it 😂. All the best, Matt 👍
Splendid
Thanks Rick, much appreciated as always. All the best, Matt 👍
Mate, I'm already subscribed but doubt you'll be bringing the locomotive to any railway near me!
And if you're going to make a joke about drinking tea on the internet, at least have a Blondi Hacks or Bad Obsession mug to complete the bit 😂
Should add though, I'm thoroughly enjoying the build!
Owen, Thank you for your subscription, it is much appreciated. Are there any 7.25" gauge railways near you?? Not a Cutting Edge engineering? or Colin Furze? or This old Tony? or Abom79 mug?? 😉 All the best, Matt. 👍
@MattChiversWorkshop Several but they're over the other side of the planet to you! Diamond Valley Railway has about 1.5km of mainline track. Victorian miniature railway will end up with a bit more but still under construction. Have my own 7.25" gauge Heidi that is in desperate need of an overhaul...
Great progess.
Thanks LilMule. All the best, Matt 👍
Another excellent video Matt, chassis looking good, can’t wack a cup of tea, just the job, thanks for sharing
Thanks Brian, Much appreciated! Sometimes you just need a cup of tea to pause and ponder.... then boom an excellent idea will come to mind!! All the best, Matt
Right then Mr Chivers, your adoring public demand some honesty. Have you put a dummy seat in place and "played" with the brakes that way yet? (Toot toot noises optional) Wish I started my Tink later so I could just copy you!
No Comment. 😂.
Well you decided to rush ahead with your build!! 😜
From the "No comment I suggest the answer is "yes!" Me? Rush ahead? Hardly 🤓@@MattChiversWorkshop
Well you did say you'd finished it the other day 🤪
Are you tempted to also include a steam brake in addition to the handbrake?
Hi, I did have the thought of putting a steam brake. After having a conversation with my mentor who has built the same loco with a steam brake, he said he very rarely uses it. Either uses the air brakes on the train to stop, or the handbrake. If you look at my lift link at the bottom of the brake shaft rod, I've made it so it can be easily taken apart to switch the linkages for ones needed for a steam brake. The brake layshaft is also purposely longer and the boss required fitted at the other end which the steam brake push rod would be attached too. I've future proofed it, hopefully. All the best, Matt 👍
Nice one Matt and thanks for the description. I like your thought process of future proofing the design.
Personally I would have a steam brake if only for the reason of something else to play with. Saying that someone else to go wrong!
All the best with the build
would a cotter pin have worked the same as the grup screw
Hey up Mozzer! There are probably quite a few areas cotter pins would work on this loco than what I have done (Especially in next episode, possibly), but in the brake handle is not somewhere I'd put one. The loctite will hold it, its gone off like concrete!! All the best buddy, Matt.
like, how "fat" will this engine be? :p 1 ton? impressive work nonetheless! :)
Hi Gregory, full with water, loaded with coal and me, around half a ton. All the best, Matt.
