  • Tonight was a fun first try using my Axis ART 1099 for Windsurf Foiling. I purchased the 89.9cm Windsurfing fuselage and 19mm adapter from Live 2 Kite. I also ordered M8 70mm, 80mm, 90mm, screws and washers from Bolt Depot.
it was City Leuge race night at Newcastle WA. A fun and safe place to race with gusty and shifty wind which makes it a great course for fairish racing for Longboards and Foiling gear.
Before the races I went out for a bit to make sure it was set up well. All a did was move the mast track back a inch and I did not need to shim the rear wing. The 1099 is just AMAZEBALLS for Windsurf windfoiling!!! Super easy to get to flight and with a not too heavy sail turned well for max power and with spirited pumping it gets up in some very light wind. My guess is I get it flying in 5-7 mph of wind and I can keep in flying with no pumping in a bit less wind. It is fun to Zig Zag in surprisingly light wind and it has tremendous up wind and downwind ability. Sure, a pure race foil will be faster but I already got a max speed of 22.5 mph which is plenty fast for a fun a very well rounded foil "I have a feeling I can get it to go faster".
With me being able to get flying in a bit less wind and almost as fast as the Starboard Teamset foils "we had 4 with them tonight" I was able to get 3 first place finishes. The last race the wind rilly dropped and the longboards did great. Nikolay and Greg were so close together for the downwind leg and Nikolay got the win, nice racing!
I am into learing Wingfoiling and the reason I did not get larger Wing gear for lighter wind was because the price was getting up there for the gear I had my eye on. This foil, my Mojo 6.2m and my 88L Wing board are all great and I purchased them within my budget. If there is 10 mph of wind or more I think Wingfoiling will be my go to. For less wind this Windsurf foil comb is just EPIC and I plan to get some Slalom sessions in to and this board is a blast in flat water with up to 25 mph of wind.
With a flying board speed of 17 mph or less "super light wind" this Wind combo is great. When I was going over this speed even a light touch down got super sticky and I almost fell. This Slalom board does not have much rocker. I believe this is a issue because the foil mast is 90° which I feel is the bestest for super light wind. I suspect some -° shiming on the deep tuttle "my guess is -2° to -6°" will make it when I touch down the nose will be up not slighty down.
Let me know if you have any thoughts on this and let me know if you would like me to make a video on how to make custom mast shims.
I am super stoked that other than the two Axis parts and screws I already owned what I needed to get a fun and very capable Ultra light wind Foiling setup. I may have forgotten something so if you have a questions give me a shout out. 🙂

    Great video and information !
I have been Windsurf foiling for last six years and what I found out through riding all kind of old Starboard‘s I sonic and other formula type boards like you are riding in this video, the problem with the other boards they don’t have big rounded beveled rails so when you get going about 20 to 25 30 mph do you need the big round rails to just bounce you back up on top of the water, anything else that’s flat or tucked hard classic I sonic rails like that will just keep on digging in as you touch down . So the faster you go the more the rails are digging in when you touchdown, making it’s hard to get the board back off the water back onto the foil, so if you don’t want to buy a new board I will tell you do is make the front half of your board more rounded on the rails. It will allow the board to just bounce off the water instead of suck to the water or if it’s got a hard tucked rails it will actually just carve into the water and make you get catapulted every time specially if you’re going really fast over 20 mph. These are things that I’ve been experienced the last six years.

      Thanks for the praise Roy!
      I greatly appreciate your advice!
There are so many variables to foiling, different boards, gear, and riders preferences make a big difference. Is the front double concave, single concave, V, or convex, how much rocker does it have, length ... This paired to rounded rails / sharp rails could make a difference eather way. It is a lot of fun discovering what works too. So I think for some boards rounded rails can help to have less likelyness to get catapulted / stuck. I think with all other variables being the same rounded rails will help to improve a more suttle touchdown. What I have found is eventhough a touchdowns can be a more suttle expierence this does not nessasaraly reduce the chance of a fall or catapult after a touchdown. For my personal flying style I prefer shaper rails with more of a sudden up push rather than a breaking affect or forward push from the rounded rails.
When I modified my 2005 Starboard formula "I posted a few videos on it" by removing some of the front and sides I also made the sides more rounded. This did make touchdowns smoother but there was a big increase in drag / slow down when I touch. It is now a bit more tough to get back to flight after a touchdown. This mod was a fun project, it added durability and I think it looks neat now and it did reduce swing weight a bit "more helpful for smaller sails". The upgrade was not an overall improvement and if I had the choice to do it again I would leave the board stock or just remove some lengeth off of the front and leave to side rails stock. I think getting a different board if I want a different size / shape.
When I first purchased my Starboard foil I used it in my stock deep tuttle box of my 2005 Formula. It worked great for a few months but eventually without a mast flange the tuttle hole was wareing out and getting bigger front and back. Originally the angle on the mast was stock and I think about 87° or angled back a bit. This board handled / handles touchdowns like a champ and even at over 25 mph foilouts can be held onto with big touch downs and manage not to fall, just hang on tight! It just pops back up to flight "lots of rocker". After the wear the mast angle turned into over 90° or angled forward some. Same thing happened with a warn out box as with my Axis foil at 90° ... a bit easier to get to flight but any touchdowns resulted in a ton of drag, catapults and difficultly to get back to flight. The King Tut Foil Box I installed is still in great shape with no signs of starting to wear out.
My 131L Isonic has so much less rocker vs my Starboard Formula board so just swapping to my go to Windsurfing foil board could be a easy solution. Because the 131L has less rocker it will be more sensitive to the correct mast angle ... or at least I predict that. I think it would be neat to get more uses out of the same gear so I don't have to bring as many pieces to the water. Maybe I will try out my 2005 SB Formula before I make mast flange shims? The mast angle shims would work on both boards though.
      Hmm projects !?!
      Have a great day

Nice! Versatile foil for wind or wing foiling

Have you used other size axis foils if so which ones and how were they compared to the 1099 ?

I have not used other Axis foils Front Wings or rear wings.
It is funny ... for Wing Foiling I could go bigger than the ART 1099 for light wind ... but I don't want too as the efficiency and manuvarability is so good if I have enough wind to get flying "about 10 mph of wind".
For Windsurf foiling the ART is Epic Amazing for light and ultra light wind. It would be fun to try larger wings but I think the 1099 is possibly one of the bestest for light wind windfoiling!!!
