Maciek is simply a badass and great ambassador for the greatest sport ever!!! Ive been windsurfing since 1982 and Im loving the growth these past several years. 🤙🏻🌊🌴🙌🏼
Yes the sport is alive and foiling is a big part of it. One thing to realize is that many spots do not have strong winds. And foiling has opened possibilities that didn't exist before. Before foiling, my weekend sessions were a miss 80% of the time. Since I foil, my weekend sessions are a success 90% of the time. Huge change from my perspective.
I agree to "It's so alive!". (In my humble opinion there is so much more opportunity now than there was when I learned windsurfing, that I find meeting so many people on so many different kits is just very gratifying. Wing foilers, kite foilers, SUP foilers and all the others on the water included!)
Maciek can you make a video on the gear you have selected for the upcoming pwa season? We know the big board will be foil and the small board fin..but what's the medium board? What actual size are the boards, and which sails are foil sails vs fin sails.
Maciek, question for you: why do they cancel the races in light winds? I seem to recall they cancelled races because the wind was barely 20knots. Isn't that good enough for a good race?
In Defi Wind the limit is 20 knots. Below that the wind is super inconsistant and the point is that every free rider with a 5-6m2 sail should be able to race and when the average is 18 knots you have 10knot lulls so it’s not really the case
@@MaciekRutkowski Very interesting. Thanks for the answer. I wonder if they should adapt the rules once more riders can foil. As a personal experience, I can do decent speed on a foil in 10 to 15knots. Of course I'm nowhere near the speed you guys are going at but eh I do it with small sails relatively speaking :).
@@MaciekRutkowski i feel you! what was the reasoning for this decision? Equipment choice was an extra dimension that could make things more interesting.
Well I dont totally agree. In soccer you have defenders, keepers, attacker, midfielder etc.. different skills is needed. Not everybody can be a attacker, so a good defender or keeper is a good inspiration for kids who want to play soccer but has not the skills for a good attacker. In windsurfing I can be the same. Make disseplines so there are opportunities for everybody. Foiling can be a dissipline besides windsurfing on a fin. You mentions what will be the fastest and wil go with te reglementen (it’s your living, I get it) But apart from competition which 98% of the windsurfer doesn’t do, it’s about the feeling and satisfaction or thrill (or kick). That’s why we surf. And the goal is planing. Planing is the aspect that gives the most satisfaction. Planing is never boring. So the market (producers) need to understand that and pwa to. If they push foiling, there is at risk that the most beautiful part of windsurfing (surfing /planing on a fin) dies out. When people than stop foiling (get boring after a while) al windsurfing dies. That would be a shame.
Hi Maciek, Thank you for the great vids! Yet a small comment on your thought in this video. If a friend asks you: who or which team is the best sailor in the world? What is your answer?
@@MaciekRutkowski Thank you Maciek. Sorry, what I mean to say is that similar in windsurfing also in the world of sailboats there is an evolution and innovation going on with multiple forms of hulls, profiles and foils. These types of boats are divided into several categories with their own rules and objectives. Therefore, in the world of sailboats there is no overall best sailor or team. Contrary to what you think, I expect that in the future this will also be implemented in the world of slalom windsurfing. Maybe even in weight classes of windsurfers.
overall best windsurfers with the women its pretty easy; Sara Quita hands down: freestyle, slalom, waves and foil. in the men overall and i'm going out on a limb here: freestyle world champ, decent in slalom and foil and would probably do well in waves too but havent seen any footage of that yet; Amado. my two cents but being Dutch probably biased 😂😂
Yes, agreed with the girls its easier, but it took thi absolutely amazing talent in Sarah Quita to be that way! Amado hmmm.. he's amazing but outside of freestyle the results aren't really. there yet. Still young tho and from what I see he's training racing much more this year so could be a on his way up!!
@@MaciekRutkowski as i said i'm biased 😂😂 would be great tho to have an allround world champ again although i fear each discipline has become too specialised
first time i heard the best point about fin vs foil: we have to unify the sport. Never thought about that, IMO the only reason to keep fin and foil competing to each other. So why not a overall PWA winner that competes in all the disciplines? It's clear to the public/sponsors etc. like back in the days of Dunckerbeck and Naish. regardless if you onn fin/foil/etc.
Yea would be amazing! Only issue is waves and freestyle got crazy specialized so you risk a situation where overall World Champ is a person who is 15th in all disciplines. But I would do 2 best disciplines and watch the slalom guys learn waves and wave and freestyle guys learn slalom thing it would be very cool 😁
So they should not have canned the 'overall' world champion and this should have always been held above the individual titles - then we would know who is best and there would be a real tour Also, foil actually does not help some of the biggest barriers to growing the sport. One is cost and amount of gear. the other is the long learning curve in comparison to other 'action' sports foiling will extend that learning curve. I think the foil is the future crew better be careful what they ask for. It should be all seen as one and if on the racecourse foil will dominate fin - seems inevitable then to loose top level fin racing is a mistake - a BIG one, just like loosing an overall world champion was.
yea now its too late for the overall as disciplines got super high level and specified... I wonder if long boarders said the same thing about short no-dagger finboards, that loosing the longboards is inevitable but a big mistake. I absolutely love fin and would do a lot to protect it, but one wonders...
@@MaciekRutkowski interesting comparison with long vs shortboards "back in the day" one big difference tho is windsurfing was booming then and not in decline like now. For racing now I think having seperate disciplines with an overall champion can work then we know who the best racer is in each class and best overall. Race committee decides what discipline will be run on each day, no upper wind limit on foil & don't run fins unless powered 8.5 conditions. 🤷♂️ not all that different to when they used to have "course racing" and downwind slalom in the same event - that worked for a long time.
Great video, great talk, but the music is so damn loud, while you are talking, we have to struggling to listen to you. I can't understand how you think music is at same importance level, comparing to what you have to say.

Great video maciek🤙🤙🔥
completely agree! Unify the sport, make people take the gear they want. The best sailor using the best material will win
I foil and fin and I love them both for different reasons, but I love them coz windsurfing is awesome in all forms. 😍

not sure if this is interesting enough for a video, but yes, medium inboard is pretty much gone...
100% agree
"My sponsors forced me to join the event". Made my day!
what can I say its a hard event! :)
So when you’re 50 will you be foil or fin? 😜
The question comes at 70...
hopefully I'll be able to ride waves every other day and I aint doing that on the foil :) but for cruising...

How do you feel about the pwa only allowing 2 boards from 2024 onwards? it kills the medium boards aswel i feel like.
Taty Frans just said that if you wanna win its gonna be 2 foil boards 😉
im the only member of the PWA Management Board that voted against it. I think this says enough how I feel about it :)
