2021 Ford Bronco First Edition review, answering the questions:
1) What's the Ford Bronco like to drive on roads?
2) Why did the Ford Bronco choose an independent front suspension?
3) Should you pick the manual or automatic transmission?
4) Should you choose the 2-door or 4-door Bronco?
5) Should you choose the 2.3L or the 2.7L engine?
The review takes place in city traffic of Austin, Texas, just like real Bronco drivers will experience!

Lol. Shots fired.

Immediately after saying that he should've taken a sip of a Starbucks drink of some sort and put on "Watermelon Sugar".
It's true. I really want it, but I rarely do any off-roading.
@Cottontail Grouse wat? Did you forget your meds again?
I have trails all around me, but that doesn’t change the fact that MOST of the time, will be spent on the road. Anyone who says that isn’t true is a liar. But when I am off-road, I want it to be extremely capable.
The dramatic zoom to the wranglers passing was hilarious 😆
The wrangler driver must be having a jaundiced view of the bronco so he decided to overtake it
Surprised the jeep wasn't death wobbling
My jeep was a POS so Bronco blows it away
Independent Front Suspension = No Death Wobble
Also = less traction
Also much worse off-road capability. I had a Titan swaped xterra and was constantly pulling tires way up in the air until I bought a jeep 😂
@@chaosseat IFS = more terrain adaptability and higher speed
And less articulation and traction and no locking front differential.

I came here for an explanation about the suspension and ended up getting the best review of the entire vehicle on UA-cam. Case in point: his explanation about the safety loop hole that Jeep uses to not have rear side curtain airbags. I have looked for this information for a long time and he covered it in his review. Brilliant.
when did he do that?
Because 99% of these are going to be mall crawlers.
Just like Jeep’s. My Bronco however will be wheeling.
Just like most Ferraris, Porsches and Lamborghinis will never see a racetrack. Or most sport bikes. It’s normal. Theses vehicles are designed for almost exclusive road use. Try driving across Africa or 24 hours at the Nurburgring, there’s gonna be issues. A couple vehicles can do it, but you wouldn’t enjoy driving them 5 days a week on a commute in Los Angeles, for example.
@@joebartlett3255 I’d take an older Bronco off roading. The new ones just too expensive. You will damage things on trails. Sometimes it’s not a matter of if you can, but if you should.
Cheers
They will be fantastic over speed bumps
Ppl don't realize how much weight negatively effects off-road performance, as long as it looks cool.
They will all be mall crawlers so it doesn't matter.
How good is it for going on a low speed chase trying to escape to LA police?
That's the special edition package, comes only in white and includes run flat tires for spike strips, reinforced fenders to protect from PIT maneuvers, 360 degree cameras to keep an eye on the police helicopters, and special edition bloody glove badging.
The gloves in the glove box are always too small
OJ edition coming for Socal buyers.
Those were the real Broncos. These look nice, but they lack that aggressive rugged feel and look. I never thought I would hear Bronco and four cylinder together.
It really seems like it is more of a show toy than an off-road vehicle.
@@kenny3217 that’s the OJ Simpson edition
Let's be realistic:
~95% of the Broncos bought will never see any real off-roading. IFS is a far better suspension for day to day driving around town.
Accidentally mounting the kerb might be considered off roading
Exactly. All the Rubicons that I see don't experience more than rust belt potholes.
@@zkdadof4
There are lots of gals that buy Wranglers because they are "cute".
I think that's applicable to 95% of all trucks. Especially when they're lifted with 22" wheels on M/Ts. 🧐
On a side note, the flex with the disconnecting sway bar is pretty impressive. Probably still inferior to a live axle, but not by far. The driving mannerisms from the IFS should easily make up for the slight loss of articulation.
95% of first owners might be more accurate. Give it a few years and a lot of people will be more willing to take it off-road.
While I obviously appreciate good fuel mileage, range isn't of much concern to me. My wife's bladder range is maybe 135-140 miles, at best.

Independent suspension is much better for any high-speed off-roading. The Wrangler can really only do low-speed stuff. It is literally the slowest vehicle rallied by Team O'Neil (For reference, it took 15 seconds longer to complete the loop than a Chevy Astro van).
Broncos and Jeep’s weren’t supposed to be prerunners. Wranglers are meant to drive over boulders
Ford already makes a prerunner, so why would they make another?
@@ItzzTesta the Bronco has had independent suspension since literally the beginning. It's greater versatility than the Jeep as always been a distinguishing factor.
@@ItzzTesta 99% of off-roading is cruising along at moderate speeds. The Bronco is better at everything over 5mph and not much worse than a Wrangler in most rock crawling situations. the Raptor does one thing well and costs an arm and a leg. The Bronco immediately becomes the best all-around off roader on the market and at a price competitive with a Wrangler.
@@SnoqualmieShredder Sorry, that's a mistake on my part. But yeah even without independent suspension, the Bronco was always known as a more versatile and streetable vehicle.

It's good enough for a Lada Niva.
Yes and almost all Ultra4 cars now use IFS
Hardly a valid comparison when his shocks alone cost more then that whole bronco.
@@dirtlifemagazine Except the winning KOH cars the last couple years....
The fact is there's no comparison between a competition buggy and an on-road IFS. No point in even mentioned them. As for ultra4, when the course is fast and open the IFS cars do well, when it's tough and technical the solid axles still rule. Each has it's place - I prefer crawling so naturally I'd gravitate toward solid axles for ease of mods and maximum articulation. For a production vehicle, the Jeep still rules the roost here with no real competition. But for moderate wheeling or going fast (and of course on road) IFS comes into it's own.
@@donhappel9566 For all-around off-roading the Bronco rules the roost and has no real competition. The Wrangler does exactly one thing well and the Bronco is not far behind.

Ford alway puts small fuel tanks in their cars and SUV's. I'm not sure what their problem is? It's very annoying.
Probably to reduce fuelcosumption for enviromental test.
A smaller fueltank is an easy option to reduce weight.
@@jonasstahl9826 One gallon of gas is 6.3 pounds. So adding 5 gallons into a 5000lb+ vehicle would probably make little difference.

Hmm, it looks like its a few easy to flip latches to remove the wheel arch protectors and I'll assume the rockers are the same. I wonder how many owners will wake up in the morning to find some thief quickly removed all those pieces from their Bronco to sell on EBay.

The rockers can hold the whole weight of the vehicle. I doubt they're quite as easy to take off. Does anyone know what that process is like?
Solid axle only makes sense when you will be pushing articulation to the limit, and I value the ability to smoothly glide along a dirt road at 45mph over the ability to rock crawl.
To each their own - I'm just the opposite and prefer crawling. Granted, bombing along on fire roads is fun too but it's more of an aside for me. Sadly the Wrangler is the only real option for a new crawling-oriented vehicle.
@@donhappel9566 I think if you were honest with yourself, you'd admit that almost all of your off-road trips is cruising along at moderate speeds and then climbing obstacles that don't require the n-th degree of twist the Wrangler gives you. In other words, you'd still be more comfortable and plenty confident in a Bronco.
@@donhappel9566 I'll be honest, if I want a rock crawler, I'll get a purpose-built rock crawler and a pickup truck to carry it on asphalt
@@specialopsdave Like... seriously... this... this is what i was waiting for, everyone who talks about the Wrangler being better than the Bronco always mention specifically and only the rock crawling. It's valid because these vehicles are built for that purpose specifically and the Wranglers SFA makes it somewhat easier to deal with when it comes to things like lifting and modifying and such. Tho they never mention this, they always say that SFA is just better at articulation or will do things the Bronco can't, even tho more than 95% of what the Jeep can do so can the Bronco, and ironically the Jeep can't do half of what the Bronco can do. Nobody is gonna be doing some crazy dedicated off roading and if they do they would have a purpose built rig for that, any daily driver who does off roading here and there won't even reach the full capability of either of these vehicles so acting like the Jeep is monumentally better is an exaggeration and ignorance at best. In most applications the Bronco will be just as good if not better.
@@mechmat12345 Don't get me wrong, I like the new Bronco, particularly as I'm an old time Ford guy. Further, I don't really like Jeeps I just acknowledge they are the best option for the sort of wheeling I like to do and the most technically capable factory option available. My type of wheeling is more like Rubicon, Fordyce, etc. There isn't really any cruising along at moderate speeds, even the non-technical sections are slow going. I'm not an 'overlander', I'm a rock crawler. I'm there for the obstacles and the challenge. Another huge plus of the solid axle of course is the ease of modification. I'm sure there will be some well built Broncos showing up soon enough, but I expect they'll be few and far between relative to the heavily built Jeep scene.
It's like the difference between off-road and rally driving.
Rock crawling vs everything else. For a light duty vehicle. I prefer solid axle 3/4 and 1 ton 4x4 pickup trucks

Thank you for showing the 16.4 mpg for the day trip. Too many play the shock and awe game and do not show the real deal. You have always been about the real deal and that is why your videos are some of the best on UA-cam. Thank you for this great video!
I wanted to love this thing, but those fuel economy numbers are just so atrocious that it's become a deal breaker. Not even interested anymore. I figured with the smaller displacement and modern gearboxes that they could have worked some magic there, but it seems they just piled on the weight to such an extant that any gains seem minimal. Guess I'll just wait and see how the Maverick does outside the city.
I'm kind of there with you on that. I get better mileage in my 97 K1500.
For real, I'm shocked and appalled by this fuel economy. Guess they were trying to bring back that old school gas mileage too...may have just cost themselves quite a few potential customers. I know I'm hesitant now seeing that.
I’m sure a hybrid version is coming. They likely launched with out it so the hard core base would not think they sacrificed anything for off-roading.
Some guy is saying
"My Harley needs gas every 150 miles
Bronco's 250 miles range is OK.
But for me to go electric I need 500 miles range."
Well to be fair, an ICE vehicle can be refueled in minutes anywhere, and you can carry gas cans if you are off road somewhere as well. But your point is still valid, the number of people that still claim electric vehicles are useless because they can't circumnavigate the globe on a single charge is ridiculous. Most people, including me, could easily have a 200 mile range EV and never charge it anywhere but home. Even if i had to use a fast charger somewhere twice a year and spend an hour or two waiting, it would still be a net time saver because I wouldn't have to visit gas stations the rest of the year. Now cue someone explaining how they drive 900 miles every day towing a camping trailer.
@@dirkmohrmann8960 Most people would be fine with electric. I have been glad to see that realization spreading among the general public. Still, it's always the complainers who are the loudest online.

I can’t believe you didn’t elaborate on how much superior to other systems that the sway bar disconnect on the bronco is. It can operate under full load as opposed to Jeep’s doesn’t work half the time when you’re on level ground.

Well you could say that but on redcone TF is edcon TFL on the exact same stretch of trail showed the Bronco and the Wrangler the Broncos articulation in the front end was nowhere near the Wrangler there again you can see it you don't have to believe me
Definitely better than Wrangler but I wouldn’t trade that thing for my 4Runner as is much better, bigger and better fuel economy with an old technology. New 4Runner is coming in 2023 and will be a killer for this type of market.
60 grand for a twin turbo engine that's going to start burning itself out past 100,000 miles? No thank you.
its a big truck. it needs a v8.
fail on ford's part.
On paper, this thing looks like the best all-rounder. Smooth on-street driving with independent front suspension. May mean less traction off-road, but honestly though, who puts their flex to that much of a test off-road anyway. The Jeep may still remain the king for the hardest of hardcore off-roaders, but the Bronco looks like a better every-man off-roader. Smoother ride, more diff lock options at lower trim levels, and off-road ready packages from the factory are hard to beat.
The fuel economy is the most disappointing thing about this vehicle. I want one soooo bad, but my conscious would certainly be nagging me every couple of days when I fill up.
At least it can take 83 right?
Your conscience? 😂
@@eag8999 He means his wallet. 😂
I can tell you for a fact that you will NEVER get 25 mpg on the hwy with a 3.6 Wrangler, lol
Highway no, slow backroads it's doable.
Mine got 26 constantly until I lifted it and changed tires.
2 door, soft top v6 manual.
I was getting 19mpg on 35s and a 4 inch lift in my 4 door. Good enough for what it was.
Stock 2 door rubicon is good for 19mpg on the interstate. Less in the city.
@@mcfero1 My 2019 with a 3" lift on 33's would only get 18 on long trip so that's an outright lie. NO ONE gets in the high teens on 35's. Say that to a non-owner next time.😂
The day Ford announces the Bronco is available with a 5.0 I’m ordering one.
It better be stick
That's what everyone says until they get one. Either way, there's no way the 5.0 would fit in that engine compartment. Maybe the old one from the 80's and early 90's, but not the new ones.
@Lance Miller Actually, I'm the one who said it probably wouldn't fit in my above post. Its an enormous motor. It barely fits in an F150, let alone a Ranger. For a lot of jobs its easier to just remove the cab than try to work on it in the truck.
If they do any type of performance upgrades, it will most likely be with the new 3.0 and the mini 10 speed. Its the same powertrain that's in the new Explorer. Its designed to fit into small vehicles.
@Lance Miller He probably knows it won't fit without major modifications. An older 302, like the ones from the 80's and 90's, would fit, but it would still be tight. The 3.0 and the new 10 speed were designed to fit in small places.
Great review! Thanks for discussing the reasons why they went with IFS. I initially wasn’t too happy they went that direction but I can better understand their reasoning for doing so. Plus, driving faster off road is way more fun to me than rock crawling. Pretty good thinking on Ford’s part.
I watched a UA-cam video by TFL they had a bronco or Wrangler and a Land Rover Defender the bronco did not flex well at all compared to the Wrangler. TFL on their test of the Land Rover Defender Wrangler and the bronco
@@duanesmith5074 I think Ford is going after what the majority of people do with their rigs. I’m not surprised it didn’t flex as well. Then again, I look at side by sides and quads and they all use A-arm front suspension. I don’t think anyone has been clamoring for the OEM’s to come out with a heavy, poor riding, solid axle front suspension design.
@@thatalaskaguy depends if you're looking for a Mall crawler or an actual truck will go somewhere in Alaska ifs is great for driving down the road or going extremely fast in rough conditions like race cars or race trucks. But most of us aren't going that fast when were off road. Either one of my solid axle trucks are not heavy driving or poor riding. My Last Five trucks before my current two were the independent front suspension trucks they are weak can't haul a plough the solid straight axle handles just about anything locate a 1-ton truck and its ability if you want it just for driving down the road a g with you we have two independent front suspension suvs but I would never take them off road or put a Plough on them
@@duanesmith5074 I understand what you mean and agree with you to an extent as well. Plows and IFS are never very compatible but since it’s unlikely than many people will buy a new Bronco or Jeep to plow with its kind of a moot point.
As far as ride goes, I’ve got an ‘85 Chevy K10 and an ‘06 Ford Super duty and they both ride like garbage compared to any IFS full size rig I’ve driven. My brother used to have a 70’s something F-100 with straight axle and I remember it rode way better than both the ‘76 and ‘81 K10’s I had around the same time. Point is, rock crawling is a small niche market and Jeep has that covered with the Wrangler. Ford will likely sell a lot more Broncos because they ride and handle better with IFS than if they’d have offered it with a solid axle. Personally I’d rather Ford had offered it with a solid axle, manual hubs & manual T-case but I suspect I’m in a very small minority that would like that. So, I see why they went the route they did.
FINALLY a video of normal driving! Thank you !
It get the same fuel economy as my 1993 4 runner with 33s did, lol.
I really like the modularity of the Bronco. I’ve only seen one channel show the fender however. Not only does the fender flare come off with about 5 or 6 1/4 turn clips, just pulls out the supplied tool kit and in a few minutes you can pull off the fender if you’ve messed it up, and just swap in a new one. Now, hopefully it’s not necessary, but a very simple procedure.
Love it! Just wish they offered it w/the 5.0 Coyote motor.
the Raptor model will have the 5.0 engine. Ford will introduce it in two years when the new Bronco owners are ready to upgrade.
@@JohnDoe-wy2py of course they will... and charge a $20K+ premium I'm sure. They'll be getting close to used ICON Bronco prices which I can't afford either. :)
Video suggestion -- how the heck does a "disconnecting sway bar" work? Having replaced several sway-bar links over the years, I've always wondered how they "re-connect" after being disconnected. I just can't picture how that would work. It's hard enough to remove and replace them with actual tools -- I can't imagine how one disconnects electrically and then re-connects.
Some kind of electric servo in the middle that disconnects/disengages each side from each other. They stay “bolted” up to the links and suspension. They have kits for UTVs. Other vehicles have them as well. Pretty damn neat.
Driving on 2222 I see.....how did you like the small hill at the end of the video? I cruise there from time to time. Nice short drive.
At the beginning, I was thinking, "Man, that looks just like Austin" (where I live)... Hahaha.
FORD WAS DOING THEIR PRESS JUNKET THERE LAST WEEK.
haha seeing him drive down lamar and by mt bonnell was cool
The fuel economy is making me second guess getting one. That’s pretty bad.
buys truck. wonders why its not getting sedan fuel economy. and this is why the truck market look the way it does today.
I’m not in the market for one, but I’d have thought the economy would be better than that. I have a 22 year old Blazer with 190,000 miles on it, and I still regularly get 20-21mpg. That’s with a 4.3 and a 4 speed auto. They’re a similar weight, so why can’t Ford at least match the fuel economy of another house brick? I think it said that he averaged 16.8 or something like that for the day 😳
Meanwhile over on the TRX videos guys are saying they don't care about 7 MPG, granted it has a lot more horsepower, but these are brand spanking new vehicles which once broken in will gain at least two miles per gallon, just saw a video on the ranger with the 2.3 with 14.87 MPG while pulling 6100 lbs, so I imagine once they break in they will get significantly better..
@@vivalesvegas How much power does it make? Motors are efficient but the simple matter of the fact is that you will not get 300HP and 400TQ without burning extra fuel. The Bronco Hybrid (which will undoubtedly come) will hopefully help improve city numbers, but ultimately the Bronco is big and heavy, and these motors are absolute monsters as well.
@@spacebound1969 very true. Mine apparently makes 193hp and something like 265 torque. How often are any of us using peak fugues though? I know I’m not. A few minutes a day, perhaps, but that’s because there’s a really steep hill on my way home from work.
The new Ford broncos is a Ford escape with a new fascia, they're too tiny to off-road, it rides like crap, the only thing it has is a bronco name, when I saw one at the store the other day I'm like oh they brought back the Ford flex, plus if you're 5 ft tall you're fit in it just fine.
There is 2. You are thinking of the Bronco Sport. This one is built on the Ranger chassis
The furthest 90% of "off-road" vehicles get is off the road onto the concrete driveway into the shed.
This would be great for the crumbling roads in my city

14:18 - That Wrangler is a Potential client. He's admiring the Bronco
I'd love to see a version with the lightning drivetrain/battery pack in it.
Long time viewer here. I'm from Austin and have been deployed overseas since September of last year. It was so amazing seeing you run around some of my favorite roads in Austin. The info on the Bronco wasn't half bad either.
Finally, somebody with the V6. I keep seeing people screech about the MaNuAl because "that's what people want to see" (despite automatic preorders outpacing manuals by 4:1).

Safer vehicle than your Grand Cherokee. Laugh all you want but when somebody T-Bones you out of nowhere the curtain airbags and side beams will keep you from spending weeks in the hospital. The grand Cherokee won’t. The Bronco got an amazing score all around crash tests. The grand Cherokee like all SUVs from that period is a serious danger to its occupants.
GEE ZEUS ! $60Gs? That's Insane. Jeep is also getting up there. Nice review.
Unfortunately, you talk to any mechanic worth their salt out there, & those Twin Turbo V6s are problematic & High $ fixes. They have a poor track record in the F150s. Wait until that warranty runs out. I like the Bronco, liked them since I was a kid, they did a GREAT job bringing it back, but that PRICE POINT is insane. Spend that on a GOOD rebuilt Old one, you'll be happier.
Jeep Liberty 2002 imitator. Libertys came 4x4 with independent front suspension and Rack And Pinion steering from year 2002. Broncos are obvious copycats of a raised 3 inches Jeep Compass but with a stronger turbo engine. Even the fancy colors are like a Compass. Easy to see that. But the Compass is 18,000 dollars cheaper..
Chevy is face palming over the blazer failure and jeep is running scared.

It is really weird to see EE doing his drive-ologue around all those oak trees. Ha ha. Definitely the Texas Hill Country
Looks like Pace Bend!
This isn't city driving, it's driving in a rural village :) City driving is going 0-40mph in 10 seconds and then slamming the brakes EVERY MINUTE and wedging into 6 standing still lanes to take a left turn. You're so lucky to live in Texas!
13:00 sacrificial rockers designed to hold the full weight of the vehicle - in pairs, yes. I think if you get one side up on a rock, then no, the one rocker alone can’t support the weight of the full vehicle. This likely wouldn’t be an issue for 99.99% of owners.
I've double checked this and I think it's pretty messed up that the lightest midsize Bronco weighs more than the lightest full size F150.
Are those both 4WD drivetrains? Gotta compare 4WD with 4WD.

Back in the day they were the only two comparable vehicles being sold concurrently
International is now Navistar, and Lordstown Motors (LMC) is a spinoff of Navistar... hmm... an LMC Scout EV? Now THAT'S a damn fine idea.
For the same money and fuel economy I can get a F250 Tremor 4x4 with a 7.3L V8 with more than double the fuel tank. That will have a lot more utility, and will probably last twice as long!
You can keep your "found on road dead" I'll keep my Wrangler Rubicon. That thing won't be running by the time the warranty runs out. LMFAO.
I really hope this succeeds. Jeep has had the market locked down for decades and it shows. Competition should help drive both brands forward.
Still not truly wrangler competition. If your aspirations are really doing the toughest trails america has to offer, you're gonna want 40 inch tires and 1 ton axles and this is never going to accommodate those.

Nope, we would just see a redesigned 4runner that possibly has a 2 door, the cruiser is long dead and it's gonna stay that way
The Japanese Toyota execs are completely clueless about American off-road culture.
