Carl Orff kam in den Endsechzigern in unser Mädchen Gymnasium (Käthe Kollwitz) weil wir die Weihnachtsgeschichte aufführten, ich war am Xylophon. Er wohnte in der Nähe und kannte wohl unseren Direktor, der auch andere große Musiker an unsere Schule holte. Das bleibt mir unvergesslich, bin ich doch die Tochter eines Dirigenten und hörte als Kind nur Klasik, die Beatles liebte ich erst als Erwachsene. Jedes Jahr suche ich nach Aufführungen von Orffs Werke und ist eine in der Nähe gehe ich hin. Besonders in Erinnerung strahlen die Aufführungen im deutschen Theater München und der Freilichtbühne Augsburg. Die Tonaufnahmen des Philadelphia Orchestra sind mir am liebsten und habe ich gewiss über 1000 mal angehört, inzwischen natürlich digitalisiert, diese Musik wohnt in meinen Zellen und bildete die Grundlage für Rockbands und Liedermacher, elektronische Musik und Weltmusik. I have studied the music and life of Orff intermittently since I by chance heard Carmina Burana as a boy around 1971. It seems to me that his artistic goal was to return to an elemental musical world divested of the Romantic and Classical, reaching back to the early Baroque and even farther, to chant and the magic of the spoken word. In some ways, Carmina Burana, with its lush barbarism, is not typical of his work. Perhaps Il Trionfo di Afrodite best encapsulates the variety of his techniques, with both overwhelming power and, at times, a spare aridity.
