  • One of the most important things we can learn is how to start praying. A budding prayer life is a beautiful thing. But if we're looking to go deeper-or if we're just curious about the fruits of the journey ahead of us-where do we learn "advanced prayer"?
St. Teresa of Ávila had a deeper prayer life than many have experiences, and-incredibly-she wrote down her experiences and her analysis of what that deep journey looks like for all of us to read.
Today, Fr. Mark-Mary uncovers the riches of the interior life that awaits all of us who endure in faithful prayer.

Amen! "Pray without ceasing" (St. Paul). I feel so much peace when I do my readings and prayers in the morning before the "noise" of my day takes over.

Thank you so much Fr Mark Mary. I just loved this episode on deeper prayer-you always teach me so much and like St Teresa, you acknowledge that yes, these things are hard, but you can do it, just keep gently plodding along on the path of life, keep striving, and have faith 💕💕💕

Fr. Please pray for me, I've been thinking a lot about the past. I've been feeling down and that I have no way of feeling ok ever again... like I'll always be defined by my mistakes, my past and my wounds... Please pray for me...
    God bless

I know what it's like to feel tied to your past. We all have things we want to forget, whether it's pain inflicted on us, dealt to others, or mistakes we wish we could have avoided. Even Paul previously persecuted Christians, Peter denied Jesus and all 12 apostles abandoned the Lord at the time of his crucifixion. But God writes straight with crooked lines. He makes rights out of our wrongs and I truly believe and have experienced that he cares for us. Whatever it is that is haunting you, give it to God. He wants you to prosper and he wants to be your shelter in the storm. God is the ultimate healer and I know this from experience. He will not leave you behind, in fact he never leaves, I can also testify to that personally. May our Father wash away what keeps you down. I'll be praying for you

St. Therese of Liseux said, you only suffer when you think of the past or the future. Practice staying in the moment. I don't have much time here, so each day if I make it out of the house I am blessed 🙏🏻 Satan torments the thoughts so pray the Hail Mary and refocus. ❤️🙏🏻

Mark Mary, after years of listening to your podcast, it's become obvious there are many types of Prayer (turning our hearts and minds to God).
The Jesus Prayer is my 'go to Prayer' when not eight able to settle down to prayer.... then the Rosary, while thinking about each Mystery and besides listening to podcasts also reading the about the Lives of the Saints. Thank you for helping on our Journey to Heaven.🙏✍️🙏

Thank you for such a wonderful video! I'm newly returned to the church after 25+ years. My RCIA was awful, so I'm literally playing "catch up" when it comes to my formation and understanding of the church. The Church is so incredibly rich, that I sometimes find that I feel overwhelmed with things I should "do" or read or pray in order to feel like I'm doing it "right". I think most of all, I need to focus on prayer.

This is so helpful Fr. Thank you. Dryness in prayer is not necessarily a bad thing. This is from memory but, if I recall correctly, St. Teresa said, (contemplative) prayer is nothing more than spending time alone with the one whom we know loves us. She says to never give up praying despite dryness because that dry feeling is what humans feel when God purges our senses in order to make them capable of receiving that which, otherwise, no human sense can possibly receive. St. John of the Cross compares that dryness to seasoning firewood. He points out that in order for firewood to be of any use, it must be dry, so that it can catch fire.

  • @annmarievalenti9264

I needed this. So dry, but I do persevere. Have this book and many Carmelite books. I was blessed to meet Fr. Dubay. He was very kind to me. I was a Carmelite for 15/16 yrs and HE called me to suffer. St. Teresa & St. John I love, but St. John holds no punches.

Thank you Father Mark Mary for this beautiful message! I have found through my recent cancer diagnoses, that my prayer has brought me so much peace! People around me say they are happy to hear me so positive and strong with what I am going through, and my response is glory and power to God! I do find thoughts of fear, fear for my little children knowing they still need mom, but then a thought of surrendering all to our Lord comes back and I start to pray, surrendering all my worries to Him. Then I find myself smiling, telling myself not to fear as I picture our Lord standing next to me, and it’s a reminder He will carry me through this and he will fight this battle with me. Prayer helps, prayers are heard, our God is amazing!

Sending you prayers of physical and spiritual refreshment this AM. My wife also has cancer so I can empathize with your situation, but always cling to hope. As for this particular topic you may be well advanced in your prayer life but being a mom of young kids is so demanding. You are living your vocation which pleases God! I shared the same with my wife so I hope this encourages you. I was blessed to embark on this journey of mythical prayer and it's become a foundational pillar in my prayer life. To sum it all up your notion to surrender to God's will AND love is so true. He leads us to towards Him one way or another. Another import aspect of mystical prayer is LOVE. Loving God and letting down one's guard to allow Him to love you. The depths of His love are indescribable but the closest approximation I could give is the love you have your your babies * infinity. Faith, Hope and Love - the greatest of these and the ONLY that remains for infinity is LOVE. Finally, you know the diagnosis comes with a log of work - researching punned articles and all possible avenues for treatment and outcome. We found a wonderful oncology nutritionist who has put my wife on a supplemental treatment plan. Her name is Patrice Surely working out of Austin. If you have doubts in your support system or feel overwhelmed, she will help you. God bless you and your family. Prayers sent!

Father Mark Mary I don’t know where you are located but I wish it were in the Bay Area of CA because I need a spiritual director and you would be ideal. I like to listen to your suggestions and wisdom in so many areas of spirituality and I always realize how ignorant I am, and how I would benefit from a spiritual director’s guidance. Thank you.

Fr over the last few years my parents have passed away and my husband is suspected as having a terminal illness. I want to take prayer seriously but don't have the energy or faith I used to have as my relationship with God is affected by my human confuseion & anger if I'm honest. Is there hope for better prayer in future ?

I honestly get easily distracted about my worries, memories, and what I need to do during mass and prayers, specifically the rosary. Or I feel like I'm wasting my time. I even experience flashbacks from pornography I watched in the past
