  • If your STIHL FSA 57 needs a new line spool you can either wind the mowing line yourself (see video: • STIHL mowing head Auto... ) or you can exchange it with a new line spool for your AutoCut C 3-2 mower head. The video shows you step by step how to remove the empty spool, clean the mower head and replace the spool.

If only the white plastic cover came out in a second as in this video. I've been trying for 10 minutes, trying to use a blunt flat tool as recommended by Stihl on this thread but the pressure required to open it is damaging the casing

I'm having the same problem with my 30 days old stihl FSA57. One side of the string and sometimes both sides doesn't feed and you have to try to get it out which is a royal pain in the bottom and often is not fixable. Highly disappointed. I'm ready to take it back to the dealer to try to get a refund.

How do you remove the white plastic sleeve that sits over the line? I have plenty of line left, but it’s misfed, so I need to pull the line back out and thread it through the outer casing. It looks from this video as if the whole spool is disposable. Anybody have any suggestions?

I have the same problem with my FSA56, I think the design is just plain horrid and very not user friendly, I'm surprised Stihl allowed this to be in the final design. Having used lots of gas Stihl models this was just a big inconvenience for users. You have to struggle to slid the white casing over the spool and after a few usage the white plastic casing actually starts to rip. In the end, I stopped using the white casing. That kinda chain reaction to lead to my trimmer head eyelets popping out and now I have the eyelet holes getting bigger and it's getting harder to weed as I have to stop and adjust the misfeed strings which keeps entangling inside the spool. Only the first few months of light usage I was pleased now I'm just trying hard to find how to replace the whole blooming trimmer head - I should have bought Makita instead.

      Hello,
thank you for sharing your feedback on the FSA 56 with us. We’re sorry to hear that you are having problems with your STIHL product and that you are not fully satisfied with the quality of your brushcutter. Generally we’d like to state that the line spool of the AutoCut 2-2 on your FSA 56 is ment to replaced with a new one once it’s used up - there's no refill-option.
We’re always open to feedback and ways of improving our products so if you have a specific suggestion feel free to send it to us - we’ll forward it to the respective colleagues.
      Best regards, Your STIHL team

      Hello Francine,
you can try to remove the plastic sleeve of the AutoCut C 3-2 on your FSA 57 gently with your hands or you can use a flat, blunt item to lever it out. To assist you better we recommend you to watch this video that shows you how it’s done: ua-cam.com/video/PPUFttVYpmo/v-deo.html
In case you’re owner of a FSA 56 with an AutoCut 2-2 we advice you to throw line spool away and replace it with a new once since it is not designed to be refilled.
We’re happy to answer any further question.
      Best regards, Your STIHL team

Have to admit I bought a 57a today and the same thing happened. The wire misfed and only came out one side had to take it apart to refeed the other side again. But of a pain. What is the part number of the nylon blades you can use instead? Also what’s the best technique to use it to create an edge as I find it hard to get an accurate one without butchering the grass edge.

@@Stihl In a world where we are all trying to reduce waste this is a truly shocking admission. Had I realised this before I bought my FSA56, which in every other way is a brilliant brushcutter, I would not have bought it. Disposable spools is not an acceptable solution from a cost, environmental and convenience perspective, just a very poor business / design decision on Stihl's behalf.

Same problem, bought a FSA 57 becuase my $50 15year old weed eater finally gave up. I use the Stihl for 5 minute before there was no more line showing. Removed the cartridge, refed the line through again and used for 10 min before the same thing happened. The bump feed doesn’t seem to work either. Thought I could get a replacement cartridge locally but I can’t . Little disappointed.

@@douglasnygren3347 Same, I've had this trimmer (FSA 57) for a year. When I went to authorized dealer to get a replacement spool, they took about 20 minutes to figure it out and sold me one tat doesn't fit. They said Stihl changed the FSA 57 model mid-year.
I'm guessing we're all here trying to get a replacement spool before July 4th and we aren't able to. We should be allowed to return this piece of junk FSA 57 for full refund.
String always gets stuck, have to manually refit it, when it runs out, no replacement due to proprietary parts.

@@elmalloc p.s. I was also initially sold refills that were for the wrong model, even though I bought the refill cartridges (that are suppose to be simple) at the same time as the trimmer.
