How To Reload The Line On An AutoCut C 6-2 Mowing Head | STIHL GB

- Reloading the line in an AutoCut C 6-2 head is quick and easy to do and in this video, we will show you exactly how this can be done.
Step by step guide:
🔶 Ensure the battery has been removed or the power source has been disconnected so there’s no risk of the machine starting whilst you are working on it
🔶 Check to see if the last pieces of the line have ejected themselves from the mowing head by themselves, but if they haven’t, you will need to remove the old pieces before you can load it with a new line.
🔶 To remove the old line, make sure the arrows on the bottom of the mowing head are lined up with the two arrows on the black plastic outer ring. If they aren’t, simply push down the ring and rotate it around. Once they are aligned, you should just be able to pull out the old line.
🔶 If the above method doesn’t work then you will need to remove the head from the machine by gripping the body of the mowing head and undoing the centre nut. This can be done by hand or using a screwdriver.
🔶 Once the old line has been removed, you will need to reassemble the head ready to load with the new line. To do this, put the top of the line head back in, press down and screw the centre nut back on tightly. Check that the white ring can be moved freely and then realign the inner and outer arrows.
🔶 The AutoCut C 6-2 head takes 4 metres of our green 2mm mowing line. Take one end of the line, push it into the eyelet and keep pushing through until it comes out the other side of the head. Pull the line halfway through so that you have half of the mowing line on each side of the head.
🔶 Grip the head and turn the white ring so that it winds up the mowing line into the head, leaving approximately 10-12cm of the line each side. If you have more than that you can trim the ends.

Very helpful. When I first got this Stihl, it was loaded with the line. After using up all the line (I thought), I tried putting in a new line. It wouldn't go in. I removed the head and, sure enough, there was a little bit of the line still wrapped around the spool. Even though it "looked" like the spool was empty, it was not. After removing the last traces of line, everything worked like a champ. Something to remember if you're having trouble.

@@STIHLGB I completely concur with MrMarkBell regarding how utterly useless the Autocut 6-2 instructions are. Just a waste of paper, absolutely no way you would have deduced what you need to do based on the paper instructions.

I cant thank you enough for this video. I have the FS 50C and EVERY video shows it with the C 5-2 trimmer head. ...which works COMPLETELY DIFFERENT than this one. My OWNERS MANUAL even has the C 5-2 instructions in it instead of the C 6-2. Frustrating. I was having so many problems with line not releasing....and every time I'd have to take it apart just to get more line out. That was because with the autocut C 5-2 you feed line in 2 sections: one into each side. As you pointed out the C 6-2 is one piece of line. The guy at the hardware store (Ace) who apparently puts these together didnt even know this. So he was sending them out with line wound wrong.

Before putting the new line through the holes,open the head and check if there is anything left of the old line or else you wont be able to guide the new line through the holes.
I just found that out today when i was mowing the grass.
Also when you bump the head dont bump it on concrete but dirt because that way it wont be damaged too much.

I have just bought a new STIHL FSE 71 with the AutoCut head as in the video - I am intrigued with the idea of soaking the line in water. Could I leave the whole machine head in a container of water thus having the line fully immersed between usages - which in Naarm [Melbourne] Australia is around once per month in winter and once per fortnight in summer or would this cause rust etc in the head bearings. I am using STIHL line as supplied and in a 60M spare reel.

Hi, I have the FS50 and the line keeps melting / welding itself together in the head. Do you have any advice on this issue? I load the head as you do in the video, plus the machine is new and the line is Stihl 2mm.
Hi David, thank you for your comment. I'm sorry to hear of the problem that you're experiencing. Line welding is caused by ultrasonic resonance of the line within the head, which causes a build up of excessive heat and results in the strands welding/sticking together as you've unfortunately experienced.
The most common reason for line welding is the age of the line as it's hydroscopic so can dehydrate over time. To avoid this problem we recommend soaking the line in water 24 hours or more before loading it into the head, as it will make the cord less brittle and more flexible.
A couple of other contributory factors to avoid are:
- excessive line length (for example if the deflector has been removed or modified).
- heat created by sustained trimming around hard surfaces such as fences and bricks, concrete and asphalt. If this can't be avoided then take regular breaks from this type of work and manually extend the line more often to avoid excessive heat build-up. You can also use a lower head speed for this type of work and vary the throttle speed.
- ageing line - use new line and soak in water for 24 hours prior to loading the head.
- ‘twisting’ the line when reloading. When reloading the head, it helps to let the line hang free and rotate the spool around the line when loading the spool. People often tend to hold the spool stationary and wind the line around the spool. This technique tends to twist the line rotationally which contributes to the line binding and fusing together due to the ultrasonic vibration
Finally, the AutoCut heads are designed for mowing shorter grass, so if it's long grass or scrub that is causing the problem then we would recommend using a heavier duty cutting attachment such as the DuroCut head or even a blade or brushknife to avoid this problem. I thought I was losing my mind because I could not find any reloading instructions with my new FSA 60 R.. Really frustrating, so here we are.
I've already complained once on here, but I really need to add another piece of feedback - not a single time that I've tried to change the line have I been able to unscrew the head by hand. I always leave it screwed on fairly loosely in the hope I'll be able to open it again, but It becomes so ridiculously tight during use, it's a huge frustrating hassle every time, in fact I need to get someone else who doesn't live here to unscrew it for me, which involves one of us actually driving to see the other, a massive waste of time.
You say here to use a wide headed screwdriver - the plastic head has a huge cross in the centre of it - why on Earth would you not just provide a solid plastic 'screwdriver' that fits into the cross when you purchase the brushcutter? It's absolutely made to have a cheap, plastic 'key' to get it off, but no, I'm supposed to buy a metal screwdriver to fit in the big cross, when metal is far stronger than plastic, so it just ends up damaging it, plus costs me for a screwdriver I don't need for any other purpose? This would be so easy for you to just provide a simple piece of plastic to assist people who are slightly less strong. I guess this brushcutter is just supposed to be for strong people who have big enough hands to get a good grip on this piece of plastic? Nice and inclusive there, well done Stihl.
I really hope you start thinking about things like this - I'm 5'2", my hands are small, but I still need to cut my lawns, and a simple piece of plastic included in the purchase price would make a huge difference to myself and many others I'm sure.
I agree. I’m a woman who started working in yard work seasonally and it’s difficult for me to do this job because I can’t unscrew the black knob.
same here--took an industrial blade screwdriver, vise, and pinning the head from the back to muscle the black knob loose. What gives?
Same. I'm a self-employed female gardener, and while the Stihl battery tools have made it so much easier to do this job than it would be using petrol equipment, this strimmer head is a PIA!! I don't tighten it much at all, but when I need to remove the head that black section is *welded* on. I need to try and find a massive wide screwdriver that doesn't mangle the plastic. When you're at a customer's house and half way through a job, it's incredibly inconvenient and embarrassing not being able to get this thing unscrewed when you need to.
You lot finished complaining yet, obviously not fit to do yard work then

Hi, thanks for the feedback on the video. The AutoCut head needs to be bumped firmly while spinning at full speed. This works best on firm, grassy ground away from the main lawn area. If the line does not feed out, we recommend removing and re-winding the line into the spool and trying again. The sales man said i could also use the thicker red/orange line, but i had trouble pushing it through, i could not make it exit. I cut two Pieces of 2 meters and push them in on opposite side like on my old model-head and screwed so they disapaired inwards, i could cut, but it did not feel right. Can i only use the green line after all?
Hi, thanks for your comment. If you have an AutoCut C 6-2 mowing head, then you can only use 2.0mm (green) line or 2.4mm (orange) line. The red line is 2.7mm which can't be used in the head. You don't need but one piece of line about 8 foot long run it though it and get it middle ways and wind it up don't take but a minute I luv it's so simply
Usually I have no trouble changing the line on weed whackers, but I borrowed this one recently, and it seems to just spin forever? Is there no way to lock the shaft or anything? When I rotate the black center cap, or try to spin the nut underneath it (that the black cap fits over) it just spins forever and will not loosen. I can hear it spinning the shaft connecting to the motor as well. No idea what's going on with this one. Anyone have any ideas?

How do you release more line when they get snipped/cut off while using it ? Do you wind it out clockwise? I presume I don't tap this one off the ground??

We can certainly consider a video showing how to tap the AutoCut heads off the ground to extend the line, but if it it snaps inside the head, you do need to take the top off and feed the line out again. Sorry yep, it's just when it wears down from strumming too close to trees and walls etc . Not inside the head . There maybe something wrong with mine, doesn't seem to automatically release. I tapped at full throttle a few times.

It might be worth taking it apart and reloading it to make sure that it's not jammed further inside the reel? It's also worth soaking the head in a bucket of water overnight as that helps the line stay flexible and makes it less brittle so is less likely to snap off in the first place. I hope that helps. My white ring won't compress back down into the head. It still springs up and down. I hold it down and screw the nut down as tight as it will go and white head pops when it's turned anti/counter clockwise. The nut seems to bind up and seems cockeyed on the bolt, like it's somehow cross threaded.

Are there any tricks to try when you push line in 1 side, but it wont come out the other side? Mine simply stops and you are just bending the string. I can take it apart and wind 2 strings manually as with old models.
Hi, thanks for your comment. If the line is particularly 'curly' having been wound tightly round a new spool then this can sometimes make it a bit tricker to load. You can usually straighten it out a bit by bending that first couple of inches the other way to the curl. This should straighten it out and make it feed all the way through without catching. It's also worth checking that the arrows on the black outer ring and the white inner ring are as closely aligned as possible as shown in the video, at around 1 minute and 52 seconds. Hi Peter, the current version of the FS 50 comes with an AutoCut C 5-2 cutting head as standard, which I'm afraid only takes the 2.0mm line. The FS 50 can also be used with the AutoCut C 6-2 but that only takes 2.0mm or 2.4mm line. Thanks, STIHL GB

Mine seem to stop feeding and seems like it gets stuck and stop feeding. What am I doing wrong? I have this exact head.

I need to add more line but even with the arrows aligned it won't come out freely.
I then disassemble the head so it can come out freely and it's still stuck.

I know how to thread, but I have a problem with the line shear off and or the auto feed when bump on the ground doesn't eject line.What am i doing wrong
Hi Brent, if the line is not extending when the head is bumped, we recommend re-threading the line and trying again. It can also help to bump the head more regularly, as soon as you notice the line has been worn down. Finally, you can also soak the line in water beforehand - this can make it less brittle, which helps to stop the line breaking off inside the head. It is unusual for the line to just shear off. If you are still having issues, we recommend taking your machine to a STIHL dealer who can advise on the issue and offer advice on preventing this in the future. I hope that helps. Thanks, STIHL GB

Hi @@mets23q , I've spoken to our technical department and they have confirmed that the bump cap is available as a spare part and can be changed, although you would need to order it from a STIHL Approved Dealer. The part number for the one on an AutoCut C 6-2 head is 4006 710 4003, but it's worth checking that's exactly what you need with the STIHL dealer. Thanks, STIHL GB

Will it fit a fs 36?
Hi James, thanks for your comment. You should be able to run the same cutting attachments as the FS 38, which are the AutoCut C 6-2 and the PolyCut 6-2. On my head the line frequently disappears as if it was done and ejected, only to find that there is still plenty of line left inside, very frustrating. What are my troubleshooting options?
Hi, thanks for your comment. We have a couple of suggestions that might help. Firstly, make sure that you are running the head at full throttle when you bump it on the ground to make sure that it extends properly. We also suggest extending the line a bit more regularly so that it gets extended before it breaks off completely and the end pulls back in. Finally, it's also worth soaking the line in water when you first get it (and it it's been unused for a period of time). This makes the line less brittle and less likely to break so this also makes it last longer too. If it's still happening, it may be worth taking it to a STIHL Approved Dealer to get it looked at. How do I remove the line? The way you showed does not work for me, it is stuck and will not pull free. One side has 4-6 inches and the other is inside the reel.

Hi, thanks for your comment. Do you mean that the mowing line is breaking? Mowing line can get quite brittle and dry so it's worth soaking the line in a bucket of water for 24 hours before you start using it. That should stop it breaking off so much. Thanks, STIHL GB
Basically with this head you waste 50 percent of the line because 50 percent of it stays on the spool after enough of the line has been ejected.
But it is a little easier to spool it then the original head.

Hello from New Zealand. I have used so many trimmers in the past, this easily has to be the most un-user friendly. I have got exactly the same trimmer as in the demo. I spent over 2 hours just reloading the line. It isn't as easy as it seems in the video.
I see a stub of line inside but won't come out. Help!

What is wrong if the white ring will not move?

Wind which way?

Ok - first time with new trimmer. Paper instructions were USELESS! Not traditional Stihl quality of instructions. Video was spot on - thanks. Also - traded in cheap Toro unit as head was locked - even the shop could not remove and replace. I went back to Stihl because you can work on them, they are not designed and built to ship and sell cheap- and then throw away.

Hi, thanks for your comment. If the line keeps breaking off inside the head, it may mean that it is too dry. Mowing line can dry out over time, which does it make brittle and prone to breakage. Hi, thanks for your comment. Do you mean that the mowing line is breaking? Mowing line can get quite brittle and dry so it's worth soaking the line in a bucket of water for 24 hours before you start using it. That should stop it breaking off so much. Thanks, STIHL GB
I load mine the exact same way. It's a piece of crap. Never feeds out line. I hate it. I'm looking to replace it with something that works. I'll never go back either.

Thanks for this, but... the instructions on how to change attachments and reload line that come with your product are the some of the worst I've ever seen. The pictures don't even look anything like the actual pieces. Lucky we have the internet, but it doesn't seem like it should be so hard to just create accurate instructions to begin with. Disappointing, and enough to make me go for another brand next time so I don't need to waste time looking up a video.

How do you stop the line from constantly going back into the head? This thing is a piece of shit, how does it save you time when you have to unscrew the head and pull it apart to get the line back out of the head every 15min
Hi, thanks for your feedback. If the line is going back into the head, then there are a couple of possibilities. It could be that the line is getting too short before you tap the head so you could just try tapping it out more often. You should also make sure the tool is at full throttle while the head is bumped on the ground. Finally, it could be that the line is breaking off, which can be resolved by soaking the line in water, which will make it less brittle. If you are still having the same issues, we recommend visiting your nearest STIHL Approved Dealer and asking them to take a look at it. Thanks, STIHL GB
I have this issue too, you get about 5 minutes use before you have to disassemble the whole thing and start again. Very annoying design.
