Plot armor is the worst. Why would the cowards decide against the player’s decision to give Kieran Ogerpon? I know plot armor means a lot to any series (and character), but the staff needs to act like they got some sense.

in all seriousness i wish kieran had some special dialogue to reject ogerpon and terapagos, it would really showcase his development in indigo disk & the epilogue. maybe start with something like "wh-what? (terapagos/ogerpon)? no thanks. it CHOSE you and... i can't take that from you again." then show his acceptance with something like "besides, i don't need it to prove myself and i'm just happy that it's in good hands. take care of (terapagos/ogerpon)!"

Honestly, him giving you an Applin makes sense because he's from Kitakami, and from the beginning there was an emphasis on its rice patties and apple orchards. It's quite literally a symbol of his homeland. Also I remember in Pokemon Masters (which isn't canon, I know) Victor gives Mallow an Applin which she trains into a Appletun, and he ends up getting teased because people think he's interested in Mallow due to the tradition in Galar but he denies that being the case.

I think the player is implied to be from Galar given the decorations in their room. So, it could hypothetically happen pretty quickly after the trade if the game didn't have the protagonist as an avatar for the player
I mean I get they don't want you to give away your rare pokemon and it's not very fair to Ogerpon as it chose you, even if it was just plot armor. I love Kieran he's sweet but he also want to be THE main character and that's his downfall unfortunately.
I wanted to trade him a shiny Applin I hunted and caught in a Love Ball JUST FOR HIM. But we can't trade shiny pokemon either. So unfair. So I just traded him another Applin, caught in a Master Ball (=3=)

About the ones in your party, do you know it's cannon for a Pokémon to ASK to be caught by you in game and anime? I've had one show up randomly and ASK in my game to be caught by me! So they CLEARLY have a choice when the matter arises. Not just that, but when you trade a Pokémon you leveled your friendship status with, just to trade it away for a Pokémon you think is better than it, don't you even once think it hurts them, just a little? I'm telling you to imagine being in that situation.
I guess you can give him a paradox Pokémon. Unlike the player he can't return whenever, so it's still special. Have it hold a Master ball to replace his broken one.

I mean, yeah, I wanted Ogerpon, but I also wanted Kieran to have the partnership he should have had with Ogerpon. He could give it a good home and he WANTS to. Honestly, it almost felt the same as taking Cosmog from Lily, even if it was for Cosmog's safety. I wanted the legendary, but it didn't feel narratively satisfying. Maybe I'm too used to the show, where Ash has yet to catch a single legendary despite interacting with all or nearly all of them.

I mean, we were just some random person who came from another place, and are able to just catch this rare pokemon that he had been wanting to see for so long, and we just take them from him. the applin thing is real funny especally when, based on the clues in the trainers house, its implied that the trainer is galarian, so the trainer would have DEF picked up on that. we love to see it

Imo whether Kieran canonically knows about the custom or not doesn't matter, because what matters is the implication it gives to you, the player. SwSh are the last gen and the Applin quest is one pretty much everyone who filled the dex there did. It's still on people's mind, evident by how many people point this out. You could argue that they only chose Applin because of his Hydrapple, but many of the other trainers give you mons unrelated to their aces or mons that already evolved, so it was absolutely a deliberate choice beyond his ace being Hydrapple. As for him being a kid... I mean yeah, so is your player character. If the game implies a teen having a potential crush then so be it
"In Galar, giving someone an Applin is a declaration of love! So Kieran is in love with the player!!!" Except Kieran isn't from Galar. He's from Kitakami. He goes to a Unovan school and gives the Applin to the player, who's Paldean.
And it could also possibly be implied that they are from Galar due to their family having a Skwovet (First introduced in Sword and Shield), and their mother's use of the British slang "cuppa".

It's much worse. You can't trade to anyone in the club room the following: 1. Legendaries & Mythicals (though for some reason you can trade the Paradox Legendary Beasts and Swords of Justice). 2. Shiny Pokémon. The shiny Applin you bred or hunted in a Love Ball with the sole purpose of giving it to him? Too bad, you can't trade it to him because it's shiny, so you just wasted your time for an Applin that will now stay forever in your PC! The Ogre you have kept in the PC since you caught her because you care nothing about keeping her and wish the game would have let you let Kieran keep her from the beginning? Too bad, it's a legendary! The second Raidon you caught in Area Zero, which would give your own Raidon an excuse to kick its ass any time? Too bad, it's a legendary! One of the infinite Phione you can breed from the Manaphy you transfered from Home? Too bad, it's a Mythical! Not being able to trade shinys is what hurts me the most.

That excuse goes out the window when you know you are perfectly able to trade Ogerpon away to any other players or even release her without consequences.

As it happened, one of my most reliable teammates, my Ceruledge named Uriel, terrorized Kieren in many battles. You could even call him my ace. I felt so lucky to find an extra little Charcadet here.
I handed her out to him.
“This is Charcadet. Take care, because she will be REALLY hard to train. She’ll be weak at first, just a little baby. She won’t win hardly any battles. She’ll feel like a failure. And it will be a PAIN to evolve her, too!
But, if you really love her, and believe in her, and never ever give up on her….”
I handed the Charcadet over and threw my arm around my boy, Uriel.
“….she will become a partner you can really count on, no matter what.”
I looked into his eyes to make sure my message would sink in.
I watched Kieren match my gaze, then look down to meet his new charge. She looked sheepishly up at him, unsure if her trainer would accept her.
“….She’s perfect.” Kieren smiled at her, with his eyes lit up. “She’s exactly the perfect Pokémon for my team. Thank you so much.” He looked close to tears. “I’ll take good care of her. I promise.”

Imo whether Kieran canonically knows about the custom or not doesn't matter, because what matters is the implication it gives to you, the player. SwSh are the last gen and the Applin quest is one pretty much everyone who filled the dex there did. It's still on people's mind, evident by how many people point this out. You could argue that they only chose Applin because of his Hydrapple, but many of the other trainers give you mons unrelated to their aces or mons that already evolved, so it was absolutely a deliberate choice beyond his ace being Hydrapple.
As for him being a kid... I mean yeah, so is your player character. If the game implies a teen having a potential crush then so be it

Except Kieran isn't from Galar. He's from Kitakami. He goes to a Unovan school and gives the Applin to the player, who's Paldean.
Well actually the MC of Scarlet/violet just recently moved to Paldea and come from an unspecified region. So who knows🤷
And it could also possibly be implied that they are from Galar due to their family having a Skwovet (First introduced in Sword and Shield), and their mother's use of the British slang "cuppa".

Ah yes, because it's definitely just Ogerpon and just for him, not any Legendary/Mythical/Shiny Pokémon (Iron Crown isn't a legendary even though it looks like one) to any League Club Room visitor to prevent players accidentally trading their rare/valuable pokémon... CLEARLY it was a personal vendetta against Kieran.

It's much worse.
You can't trade to anyone in the club room the following:
1. Legendaries & Mythicals (though for some reason you can trade the Paradox Legendary Beasts and Swords of Justice).
2. Shiny Pokémon.
The shiny Applin you bred or hunted in a Love Ball with the sole purpose of giving it to him? Too bad, you can't trade it to him because it's shiny, so you just wasted your time for an Applin that will now stay forever in your PC!
The Ogre you have kept in the PC since you caught her because you care nothing about keeping her and wish the game would have let you let Kieran keep her from the beginning? Too bad, it's a legendary!
The second Raidon you caught in Area Zero, which would give your own Raidon an excuse to kick its ass any time? Too bad, it's a legendary!
One of the infinite Phione you can breed from the Manaphy you transfered from Home? Too bad, it's a Mythical!
Not being able to trade shinys is what hurts me the most.
