Exploring Savannah, Georgia

  • Savannah might be the prettiest downtown in the nation!
For this video, I took Route 17 South from South Carolina and crossed over the Savannah River into downtown Savannah, Georgia, one of the prettiest and most historical cities in the entire country, and certainly one of the finest cities in the south. The goal was to record the best parts of downtown Savannah, and to showcase some historical neighborhoods. It was a pretty day - around 58 degrees. It was Monday, January 4, 2021, and it was getting close to dusk - at around 4 pm.
Savannah was established way back in 1773, and back then it was the state capital. It served as a middle ground between the deep south and the Carolinas, and was used as a buffer to protect the Carolinas from Spanish Florida and French Louisiana.
Tons of people come from all over to check out the history here. Downtown Savannah has one of the largest national historical landmark districts in the nation. More than 40% of buildings inventoried in Savannah have architectural or historical significance. Some say Savannah is the most important architectural city in the nation.
The city was originally designed with six interconnected wards, all built around central squares, which you’ll see throughout the tour of downtown. The way they laid out the city is very rhythmic, and there are lots of layers and tons of details. You could do a whole video on the different architectural styles found in downtown Savannah. Georgian, Gothic Revival, Greek Revival and a modern style permeate the greater downtown area.
I found downtown Savannah to be very clean. In fact, while walking around at night, I wandered into one of the city’s 22 squares. It was flawless. There wasn’t a single homeless person or panhandler in sight, which is very rare in central gathering points in today’s modern American cities. The only trash I saw happened to be discarded pandemic masks. There were actually quite a few of them lying about.
Here’s what Savannah’s Bank of America looks like. Here’s an example of one of its downtown churches. Both are really wonderful to look at.
This is Broughton St which serves as Savannah’s main commercial corridors. While exploring downtown, I happened across a retail outlet which embodies today’s southern style. I liked this outfit in particular. And for youth, there’s this hip, handsome ensemble.
This is East River Street, another historical part of downtown Savannah. It lies on the banks of the Savannah River. This was originally home to cotton warehouses. Now, it’s filled with boutique shopping, artist studios, galleries, pubs and restaurants.
While out on my nightly adventure here, I ate at Tubby’s. I enjoyed the best cheesy grits I’ve ever had, they were perfectly cheesy. And the hush puppies were the softest hush puppies I ever tasted. You never know what boats you’ll see passing by here.

Nick, you’re finally showing a video of my stomping grounds. I am in Savannah once or twice a year for fun or romantic getaways with my wife. Funny story - I booked a B&B on one of the historic squares a few years back planning to propose to my then girlfriend. I got down on one knee asked her to marry me, and of course she said yes. We hugged and kissed and looked over to the other side of the Square where a carriage was pulling up. A dude gets out with his girlfriend, gets down on one knee, and proposes to her. Weird, right? In all of my life I’ve only may be seen one other proposal yet here was one happening 60 seconds after I did it. I bet that happens often in Savannah, But the same square at the same time?

I am originally from Columbus, GA and consider the Savannah area a step 🚶‍♂️ up in many ways. Before the pandemic, millions of tourists were visiting and unlike Columbus, it didn't need any fancy rides or so-called attractions just history, the culture, and the surrounding areas such as Tybee Island and Jekyll Island. I admit though Savannah is the first area I have ever seen where you have a nice block at one corner and go down the street and its third world 🌎. Beyond the good and bad, Savannah is historically and financially important to Georgia and I personally respect the city alot.

In 10 years I doubt there will be anyone living north of 37th street it'll probably all be short term rentals and academic buildings. The city had talked about imposing new regulations on short term housing. Hope it goes through. I get it's a historic/tourist city but people are still trying to live there. For those who are against "gentrification", this city was a ghetto until about the mid 1960s when things started to change. Savannah used to be called "the beautiful lady with the dirty face." They used to have a driving tour of the city because it wasn't yet the kind of city you would want to walk around in. A lot of money has been spent here by people who restored these beautiful homes.

Moved to Savannah from New Orleans 4 yrs ago. Savannah is a great city if you like to take things slowwww. Nice beautiful city, nice people, little traffic, but boring after a few years.

I visited Savannah last November, and I think it’s one of the most beautiful cities in the country. It’s a shame that right outside of the historic district; crime, poverty and dilapidated homes are prevalent.
