Panasonic GH6 vs Sony A7S III: Micro Four Thirds Caught Up

  • Usually when I compare m4/3 to full frame, there's a very noticeable difference. Full frame is usually sharper, more colour information, more separation and 3d pop, more dynamic range etc. I feel like the Panasonic GH6 has a very special look, that now rivals full frame. It's likely due to the magical Leica 200mm f2.8 prime lens. Sony A7S III vs Panasonic GH6. Sony 200-600mm f5.6-6.3 vs Leica 200mm f2.8. Things are closer than ever.
    If you buy today's gear through my affiliate links, Panasonic and Sony will join teams to make Sonysonic. Full frame Sony cameras with Panasonic usability and Leica lenses. Tears of joy could exist.

    Cool tests!
    For the Panasonic I discovered recently that you can use
    - animal detect ON
    - continuous AF OFF
    - back button AF.
    - AF on shutter button: OFF
    That way you can trigger animal AF on demand, it's a nice hack - avoid pulsing continuously but you can re-acquire whenever needed.
    For slow-mo, no animal detect but you can use a box and back-button AF on a single zone or point.

On the other hand, you will find that the usability and practicality is enormous! Small technical details make all the difference in use. OM Cameras for example never need to have the sensors clean, which is amazing. My FF Cameras stays at home most of the time. Right now I’m using the OM-1 (+ 300mmf4) for stills and the GH6 (+ Leica 100-400mm) for video all the time. The GX80 (or em5iii) + 75-300mm is always with me when I’m climbing.

Practice like this and you'll see your manual focus problems go away. I can nail focus on critters (not birds in flight consistently yet) even with the 5K recording modes on the GH5 II (same 3.6 million dot EVF as GH6). Thanks for the video man, I really enjoy your videos, both for the sincere opinions. I think one think you should consider is that the separation of the background is also coming from the compression, and even a 200mm on a MTF camera has a field of view of 400mm it does not have the compression of a 400mm on a full frame, that's were the extra comes from I think.

    in terms of toneh equivalence, I think a simpler way of thinking about it is that the M4/3 image is exactly what you'd get with the same focal length & aperture combo on full frame, just cropped in 2x. so the increased toneh you're getting on FF is more as a result of being zoomed in further and effectively being closer to the subject.

    • @Bill-NM
      @Bill-NM Рік тому +2

      Depth of field effects are ALL about distance to the subject (all else being equal, or equivalent).

    • @-grey
      @-grey Рік тому

      @@Bill-NM 100% this is why even if you get a light gathering equivalent the shot won't look the same. 16 f1.4 won't look like a 24 f2 if you crop it.

    • @Bill-NM
      @Bill-NM Рік тому

      @Seeyou Seemee When we're talking "light gathering" or depth-of-field, there are equivalent lenses. You need an MFT lens that is 2 stops faster than the FF lens. Like an MFT F1.2 lens is "equivalent" to a FF F1.8 lens. Of course if you have an F1.2 FF lens, it'll be very hard/impossible to find an equivalent MFT lens, but for any FF lens of F1.4 or higher (and esp F1.8 or higher), an "equivalent" MFT lens can be found.
      And since a FF camera typically has about 2 stops better noise performance, then by using a 2 stops faster MFT lens, the lenses are "equalized" not only for depth-of-field, but also for noise performance.

    • @BlazeFirereign
      @BlazeFirereign Рік тому

      @@Bill-NM It's important to be very clear on what "light gathering" means. Ignoring transmission losses, a given f-stop results in the same _intensity_ of light - that is, the amount of light per unit area - for _any_ lens and sensor. FF's advantage comes from the larger sensor, which is why total light collected is higher.
      The distinction is important because crop sensor detractors will "double up" on their criticism by simultaneously saying "smaller sensor = bad" _and_ also suggesting that crop sensor lenses are "less bright" by mis-applying "equivalence", whereas those criticisms are fundamentally one and the same.

    The GH6's advantages greatly outweigh its disadvantages. Its IQ is comparable to the C70 and other cine cameras, has the features/functionality of a cine camera (i.e waveform, vectorscope, shutter angle, true anamorphic support) and allows you to adapt a lot of lenses. Kasey or anyone else, name me a camera with all of that at this price point?

    • @kapilesh14
      @kapilesh14 Рік тому +1

      The functionality is amazing but I completely disagree with iq coming close to c70. The image might be comparable in good light but the moment the light goes down even moderate amount GH 6 is going to fall apart. That makes it reasonable at that price point, not a steal.

    • @sliceofmymind
      @sliceofmymind Рік тому +1

      @@kapilesh14 The C70 is over 5.5k and the GH6 is 2.1k. The GH6 offers arguably, 80% of the IQ of the C70 at more than half the cost. Again, it has most of the same functionality of the C70. The C70 has mini XLR's and lovely internal ND (I love that feature), but the GH6 makes a case for a lot small film makers.

    • @kapilesh14
      @kapilesh14 Рік тому +2

      @@sliceofmymindI own sony a7Siii. Despite the fact that it has the same sensor as fx 6, I don't think a7Siii has even 70% of the iq of fx 6. You pay the price for the kind of quality you require. Fx 6 controls the image from that sensor in a far better manner than a small body of a7Siii can ever manage.
      The 20% difference that you mention between gh6 and c70 in reality is like 40%. That difference is worth the price you pay. Even if I accept your point of iq similarity for a second that dgo sensor in c70 is whole another level of technology. Also, you have to remember that c70 has same sensor as c300 mii.
      The smaller camera bodies have definitely improved budget conscious consumers video capabilities for sure but those big heavy cinema cameras exist for a reason.

    • @kapilesh14

So you will not look into EVF or screen, but point camera as rifle. This will both keep your shots super-stable and your will be able to film them when they fly take off and fly, as you will be able to track them, not loose. That is what will get you closer to perfect camera.

    8:44 - Devastating information about Focus Ring Control not working with the teleconverter lol. Was thinking I could get away with using the PL 50-200 and 1.4x and sell my PL 100-400 for video despite the end result being smaller light gathering ability than a 1 inch sensor. Definitely not going to get the teleconverter now but will still get the PL 50-200 and will keep my PL 100-400 due to the amazing reach. Teleconverters already have too many disadvantages, but one could argue that for video work, the price you pay "might" be worth it, but it's razor thin. With the loss of Focus Ring Control, that invalidates the teleconverter for me as an option. You just saved me some money :)

      "Compression" is ALL about distance to subject (all else being equal or equivalent). So a FF with a 600 is very close to equivalent to the Leice 200 with the 1.4 TC (560mm) - so if the subject is the same size, meaning the distance to subject is the same, then the "compression" will be the same.

    IQ for both cameras are very comparable in these scenarios, and any differences were negligible -- biggest difference here is honestly the stability which the GH6 destroys the A7SIII. It looked almost like you were using a tripod. I think if you compared these two cameras in high dynamic range situations and obviously low light, then yes I would say the A7SIII would slay the mighty GH6. The Achilles heel with the GH6 is the autofocus but as far as IQ goes it is fantastic.

    The Sony kit starts at 200mm. The Panny is fixed at 200mm sans tc. In wildlife and sports work we can’t crop our way to that separation with the background. Cropping doesn’t magnify. So in some cases there is a distinct advantage compositionally to the full frame. I do think m43 in the gh6 and OM-1 is essentially caught up to many FF cameras on most technical merits. However we can’t ignore the physics of light waves when it comes to depth of field significance. In some situations like landscape where we want more depth in focus, and in macro, it can work in favor of crop sensors. In your video work the differences can be less important when panning with moving subjects.

I have a FF and an MFT kit. FF for studio and short hikes. For long or arduous hikes (like the steep climb to Comet Falls) it's MFT. Now, you're young and powerful. I'm 65. I guess the weight difference is a lot more important to me. Not to mention that I have a terminal case of GAS. It makes me forgive my cameras (even the evil ones) and even when they stab me through the heart with a rusty dagger.

For example, if the FF is f2.8 and the M43 is f2.8, it means that the M43 lens has 2 EV stops less, which is 5.6. Therefore, the bokeh is different and the separation is less noticeable.

If you have the same apperture in a MFT and FF then the FF will win, because at the same ISO it will produce less noise, but if you can get a lower F number for the MFT, something that happens with zoom lens for example, where you can buy quality zoom lens that are f2.8 or f4 in MFT at low prices, you're going to be able to lower the ISO in the MFT and it will look the same as in a FF in terms of noise.

If you look closely to each side by side comparison based on the color grading you did (if any) on both cameras, the Panasonic has way better DR, better color and a more natural look to it without blowing out the light shining. The Sony and as much I wanted to be better has blown out areas in the light, darker shadows with little to none details and the sharpness is a little too much and the color is a little too saturated. I feel like that GH6 deserves its respect on the comparison regardless of the AF disadvantage. And no i'm not a GH6 owner, this is just my thoughts on this review.
