Imagine making something so good that didn’t need to be revised over 40 years, so affordable that it’s many people’s first pedal, and that’s only their second overdrive pedal released. This is just legendary. I’m still using mine from 2003 and it’s still my main overdrive.
I still have mine from “1984.” It sits on the “pedal shelf” with her brothers and sisters, occasionally brought out to push my Marshall JMP 2204 and I’m telling ya’ they’re made for each other. I’ll never sell it, as it and the BOSS Flanger, we’re my 1st pedals. Best! ✌🏼
One of the best overdrives ever. I own a few expensive boutique drives but this one ALWAYS somehow kicks their asses. Idk there’s something amazing about it
The SD-1 seems to stand in the shadow of the TS-9, but the SD-1 is in some ways a much better pedal. Killer into a JCM800. Very reliable, too. I have an '82 that has never failed to deliver in 39 years.
@@luckyirawanm.n.3336 Sorry to take so long to reply. Haven't looked at this video in a while. It's a Japanese made SD-1 with a black label. I still have the box and the receipt. I paid about the same in '82 as you would pay now, which means they actually cost quite a bit less now, in relative terms, than they did in '82.
Shockingly enough, even though I have been playing for decades I literally just discovered this pedal within the last couple of months...Amazing, just an awesome tone monster and so unbelievably versatile; it sounds great with any guitar which has not been my normal experience with OD pedals. Kudos Boss, it's a total classic for good reason. And, at the price point, you really cannot ask for anything more.
Simply one of the greatest overdrives of all time. I probably won’t be buying an anniversary one just cause I don’t think it looks great in black, but I love mine and will happily agree that every guitar player should own a SD-1, though most probably already do!
I've been relying on the SD-1 for decades through my JCM 800. From what I've heard and read, the SD-1 is perhaps the most copied circuit of all overdrive pedals in history. I've also been told that many other companies copy the circuit of the SD-1, and then try to add a little more somehow, then charge you 3 to 5 times the price. I've tried several other high priced overdrives over the years.........but I always wind up going back to my tried & true SD-1. TIP: Use the drive control on the SD-1 very sparingly and if higher volume levels can be tolerated, decrease the preamp volume of your tube amp, and push the power tubes with the master volume a little more to a decent crunch ( but not too much ). Then use the SD-1 for solo's. Pete Thorn did a great video about this very thing, using the SD-1. A really good guitar & pick ups help a lot too, and use that volume control on your guitar as much as you can for a variety of sounds. Using all the above together, you would be surprised at the overall results. The best tone is achieved in most cases with as little drive as possible. I'm not saying to "avoid drive"..........just use it sparingly. Record yourself and listen to the playback. Your ears won't lie to you.
I’ve had an SD1 on my board since 1985. I own countless boutique drive pedals that are all great in there own right, however I think the SD1 might be the best all around drive pedal of all time, seriously’
I remember waiting for this to come out. It had the tone knob! I think I paid the same price for what is sells for now in 1981. Replaced my beloved MXR Distortion plus.
Crikey this blokes playing is awesome, been playing for 60 years, instrumentals, jazz, swing plus anything else, but this stuff is exciting. Excellent demo
In '97 I bought my first drive pedal and it was old almost died boss sd-1. But it worked. Since that time I tried many drive pedals but last 10 or more years I'm using this pedal maded in Taiwan that I bought for nearly 20$ in front my Mesa😁 And pedal is awesome! Built like a Russian tank, for this time I did only cleaning of switch knob. Great pedal. The best. Thanks boss. And greetings from Russia🇷🇺
Great drive pedal, somewhere along the way people conflated this pedals ability to give a “clean” amplifier a second distortion channel with the ability to give a bedroom amplifier a great distortion tone. This pedal was still meant to be used on a large stage with those fletcher-Munson curves you experience at high volume. It doesn’t roll off a lot of bass in that use. You will need an eq pedal after this pedal to bring back some lows for bedroom playing volume
@@michaeltaylors2456 the manufacturers never told you their outdated design was no longer useful to the modern player. So how could you know if you were doing something wrong or not? Now a days we’re either “bedroom” players where even 1 watt through a great speaker can be way too loud, or we’re on a stage with strict provisos from the FOH sound men. And they will apply their own eq anyways to what their 🎙 mics are recording and lop off a lot of low end. I love the pedal, but often play around with compression before it, or eq afterwards or both. Has a great buffer for preserving those highs for long cable runs - or just pushing a speaker that’s dark and tubby.
Bought one years ago for about 30 pounds used on ebay. After that I bought and tried out a ton of other drives including some boutique ones and they ended up getting sold and the Boss stayed..enough said.
I'm not quite sure why Boss feels the need to market this pedal, as everyone and their mother has and probably uses one. But I like the video anyway! Keep em coming.
I am about to be in the process of trying the BOSS SD-1 a friend lent to me, im digging everything I'm seeing about it! Who is this in this video playing I could list to him some more, incredible control on his playing and nice voicing as well!
Yep, my first pedal ever too, I listed to official sound demos from Boss of different pedals and this was the one I liked the most. Back then I did not know have enough experience tweaking sounds and also my expectation was not properly set but I kept it and I have learn how to use it with my Strat. I still think the natural distortion of an amp cleans up better but this is good to add "a second channel" to an amp at the edge of breakup.
@@ivandel7788 I just assumed the waza being high priced would retain through hole construction. I guess this probably means this anniversary edition is just a black painted smd version as well?
@@tb4234 You guys using a decent tube amp? If so, then use the drive on the SD-1 VERY SPARINGLY. That's the only way I've ever used my SD-1 through any of my Marshall amps. Most pro's use the SD-1 in the same way, with the drive set very sparingly, and the level & tone to suit your own tastes. Remember: a decent tube amp sounds best if you can drive the power tubes more than the preamp tubes. This means ya have to play louder. Ya back off your preamp volume on the amp, turn up the master, to get a decent crunch, but NO MORE than that. Now, use the SD-1 with the drive set very low, and the level up to where it's just above the natural volume of the amp. This is how you use the SD-1 for playing leads. Again, use the tone control to taste. Also, rely on the volume knob on your guitar to roll back for clean. Many good guitarists never even have the guitar volume all the way up. A really good guitar with good pickups plays a huge role in quality of tone & sustain.........more so than most guitarists realize. Hope this helps.
