I think that it's nice to see a new video of an old Boss pedal. Especially now in the era of boutique pedals, guitar players are needed to be reminded of how great these pedals sound for a friction of that price.

I hope Boss gets rediscovered and get the credit they deserve. Nobody builds a better design for starters. And their Super Overdrive and Blues Driver pedals are among the best out there without the “boutique” prices.
And no folks it’s not the same an Ibanez Tube Screamer which I own among other clones and I prefer the Super Overdrive. Nothing wrong of course with the Tube Screamer but for me it’s more muddy sounding than the Boss Super Overdrive.

Exactly correct! And at $49 usd (SD-1) you can’t go wrong. Boss pedals are the stuff and the buffer helps too. Gots to have a buffer if you’ve got a chain IMO?

12 hours ago I was playing this pedal through my Fender Vibrochamp and thinking, "I wish Shane would do a review of this pedal." One of my favorite things to do with this pedal is to have the gain between 8:00 and 9:00 and then use the level to push the front of the amp and it breaks up in huge tones without getting over the top. Thanks Shane!

I think what is best from Boss pedals is that I don’t have to aim for some little button while playing on stage. They make the pedal activation super solid and definitive. The knobs are out of the way too…a lot of pedal companies miss this live playing functionality imo.

Great demo! This pedal has been in my arsenal for 15 years or more. For a long time I played Strats and was able to get nice fat tones. I now play an Epi Les Paul and the high end you mentioned keeps things from getting muddy. Compression increases with increased gain settings, offering great singing tone when playing lead, and especially playing slide. I love this pedal. I have a Rat if I need a more aggressive sound, but the SD-1 covers 90% of my dirty tones.

Great video Shane, keep these Boss videos coming 😀 Another pedal that i rediscovered recently. Yes it can sound a bit "steely" as you've mentioned but that's only if you have a bright amp. My amps are darker sounding and with the tone turned down a bit it just screams, especially with a tele. I would also advice using an eq to add some more bass. I find that it sounds amazing with a beefer bass presence. SD-1 is really an amazing pedal, it stacks great with every other type of drive pedal, my favorite being with a fuzz. It just gets wild 😀

A FANTASTIC clean boost, adds a certain sparkle and boost like no other pedal can, but the actual OD did not work with my Fender Blues Junior or my current Marshall SV20, regardless of what guitar I was using (single coils, humbuckers, Firebird pickup, etc). @intheblues This was a great demo! Especially using different guitars and pickups! Near the end of the video, when you were using this with the Drive at about 3 O'Clock it sounded alot like a Marshall Stack (JCM) kind of tone... Almost very similar to the Boss ST-2 Power Stack. I own the ST-2 currently and am thinking of picking up a SD-1. Would you say the SD-1 replicats Marshall amp like tones? Or amp tones in general? Thanks so much!

A good trick with it is also to turn the gain all the way down, level and tone all the way up. Makes a really nice clean treble boost.

My favourite pedal and not just Boss pedal and it’s the only overdrive pedal I need. I’m a big fan of simplicity and these things are pretty much indestructible.

Just picked up one of these bad larries. Love it lots! Gonna keep it as long as I play I reckon. Great alternative to the ibanez jet driver or the truetone jekyll and hyde, from what I found. Highly reccomend!

I have the SD-2 Dual Overdrive, it has a permanent spot on my board, right after the tuner. I love it for its "dirty clean" tone. The red channel is like a mesa in a box, so that's a nice extra that's fun once in a while..

I did the Monte Allums mod to mine - easy to do, inexpensive, adds clarity and gives symmetrical and asymmetrical clipping options. Absolute no-brainer. This pedal is family now - never going anywhere...

If you like the SD1, then you should have a go at the Boss Overdrive OD3. One of the most overlooked in the line. Loads of output, great dynamic response, clean to scream drive range. A leave it on , ride your volume control as a dynamic drive control type of box. A bit of a sleeper in the line.

that was my first pedal ever, only thing I could afford back when I was a teenager, I still have it on my main pedalboard

To me, it sounds best with humbuckers at a lower gain setting. The clipping style gives it a top end bite that differs from the green pedals.

I love this pedal. I find it can do a nice edge of breakup thing if the gain is basically just past zero, at around 7.00.

I've used the SD-1 for a long time. Playing in a classic rock band, I thought I needed a bit harder distortion, so got the DS-1 and stacked with the Super Overdrive. I was missing that "on the verge of breakup" gain - the SD-1 does have a lot of gain and I just wasn't able to get what I needed.
Enter EHX Soul Food (Shane did a great demo on this, too). It gets that edge of breakup tone really well, but then I wasn't so happy with the DS-1. So, the SD-1 will regain its rightful place on my board and the DS-1 will be on my "spare" board. I really do love the SD-1's smooth attack and how it fills in the mids so well. More than enough gain for me, but more musical sounding than the DS-1 for my needs.

The SD1was my first overdrive, but it’s still one of my favourite: great for Rocky harmonicy stuff. Always seemed more of a distortion than an overdrive to me tho, although I think distortion pedals didn’t exist when this first came out, which might be why it was the SUPER overdrive, as compared to their previous model

Nice playing here. And yeah, the Boss SD-1 is pretty versatile. I use it as a substitute for a gain channel in a couple of my amps. You can run other gain pedals ahead of the SD-1 and have more subtle control over the sound -- I use a Blues Driver, Guvnor Plus, or another Marshall-like pedal ahead of the SD-1 to provide the basic tonal characteristics and then add crunch with the SD-1, and it is pretty versatile that way. And I'd like to back up the comments here about Boss in general, their pedals give you a good palette to work with, no boutique, high dollar stuff needed.

Nothing worse than trying out a boutique pedal at the store and then getting it home and finding out you overpaid for a piece of hype, happens often but people refuse to admit their mistake. There are some out there that definitely have earned their price range but I always wind up coming back to the one solid pedal that always works for me. BOSS, BOSS and BOSS. Best thing is they're still reasonably priced and if one should ever break (hasn't happened yet) I can get an exact replacement from ANY music store! And with that, I already know my settings also!
Usually with the GE-7, SD-1, and the BD-2 I can get about 90% of the sounds I need.

The SD-1 was my first drive pedal, the combo of my guitar volume and my newly discovered ability to play with some touch (granted by swapping in pickups that weren't absolutely garbage in my first guitar) meant that this pedal was enough for all levels of gain. I've since gone down the path of many pedals and the ability to pick and choose from a plethora of drives, but this video kinda makes me feel I should get another SD-1 and simplify my rig again.

Hey my friend !!!! Just chiming in!! Showing my support. Been awesome watching your uploads of gear and your awesome playing. Hope all is well. Your growth is so welcomed. You deserve it. I wonder if you'll ever be doing a review of Me80 old school mulit or Gt1. I use both and would love to hear your playing dialing of sounds on them. I think you'll love them. Peace my friend.

I'm always happy to hear people get great results out of pedals I hated! 🙂 I had one for years and just could get along with it. Sold it eventually for a silly price because it was an 80's model from the last year of Japanese production and had the box and it had a magical unicorn-farted op-amp or something daft. I feel kinda bad about it actually. I mean it went for market price and the buyer was effin' delighted with himself but it just seems so stupid for a pedal that I thought was mediocre at best.
