My 2 cents: It's expensive, solidly made, and sounds insanely good. That's how you could describe the Echo Fix EF-X3 in a few words. In terms of sound, the tape delay absolutely delivers and, for me, is a real alternative to the originals.
If you can't or don't want to afford the EF-X3, or if you're only interested in the sound, you could also get very good sound with a UAFX Galaxy or the UAD plugin, for example. An Echo Fix will be the choice of tape delay purists who are looking for the complete package without compromises but don't want to buy a used original version (with the associated risks).
Comparing it to a Roland RE-201, I like the self-oscillation of the feedback on the Roland model better as it gets crunchier whereas in the case of the EF-X3 it mostly looses high frequencies which tends to end up in a quite muddy mess. That's not necessarily a bad thing and maybe Echo Fix had been replicating the sound of a different Roland Echo I don't know (the RE 501 or 555).
I liked the Preamp and Chorus also a lot and using the individual tape outs for stereo and sort-of quadrophony is really nice.

      UA Galaxy, or Starlight?

I like both but if you're going after the RE-201 sound, Galaxy is the better choice@@leNotstrom

This is exactly what I was looking for in deciding if the ex-x3 is for me. I’m gonna bite the bullet. such a tasteful presentation.
(Update: purchased a Vintage Green tolex edition today! Also, I could listen to that Lullaby Lead all day.)

I like your mini reviews! A very expensive beast but alternatives as few and far between if you want the real thing in a modern package. Do you buy all the gear or get sent it for demos etc? Is it a keeper?

Most of them are loaners (like in this case), sometimes I am involved in sound design projects for the respective synth, and other times I just purchase the equipment.
But tbh, I rarely buy and/or keep stuff as I try to keep my equipment-park in a manageable size. At least to me, too much stuff is contra-productive for my creative outcome.

sounds lovely but that price is high it sounds worth it though if ya can afford it

Absolutely. You really have to want it and it has to be within your budget (it wouldn't be in mine, either ;) - but I appreciate that there are still companies keeping these concepts alive)
