IMPROVED PASTEURIZED HWFP TEK, 5% Supplemented Fuel Pellets

- This is the no-mess method I'm using now to easily add 5% wheat bran to my pasteurized hardwood fuel pellet grow blocks. I've tested this 5% supplementation rate enough now to be confident that it does indeed boost your yields without adding to the risk of contamination using my in-bag pasteurization method. YOU SHOULDN'T ADD BRAN UNLESS YOU HAVE A FLOWHOOD OR STILL AIR DEVICE TO INOCULATE IN. IF WORKING IN OPEN AIR OR IF YOU ARE VERY NEW TO THIS, I RECOMMEND STARTING WITH NO BRAN UNTIL YOU HAVE SUCCESS, THEN WORKING YOUR WAY UP.
This is an addendum to my original pasteurized fuel pellet video that shows the full process here:

Thanks, great video. I do everything in grams, so this is what I came up with for your formula:
2 pounds pellets 907g
2 pounds 13 oz water 1276g (140% of pellet weight)
1/2t gypsum 2g (0.22% of pellet weight)
1 level cup wheat bran 57g (6% of pellet weight)
Sounds good to me 👍
Did it work ? was there any mold
Thanks for converting!
Thanks for the content!
I used your technique to make pellet bags yesterday but I used chest cooler instead of a plastic tote and blanket. Worked great to keep the temp up for a long time during pasteurization. Just throwing it out there as a modification in case someone has a cooler but not a large plastic tote handy.
Good idea, I pinned your comment. Let me know how your grow goes 👍
Thanks, love your vids, you are my favorite myco You Tuber by far! I'm getting ready to try this this afternoon for my first HWFP bag grows. I was really nervous about including any bran on my first try but you've got me convinced I should give it a go. I'll be following your tex to the letter, prepping for some Lion's Mane and Shiitake spawn that are just about ready to go.
Awesome, let me know how it goes for you. Just make sure you get a quart of grain spawn in each block and shake well to evenly distribute. And don't forget to give your bags a little squeeze to listen for leaks before putting them on shelves for incubation. Good luck 👊
@RenegadeMushrooms Well, I chickened out and didn't use the bran since it's my first pasteurized bag. I've only been back into mushrooms for a couple months and haven't had any major contam outbreaks yet. It was the contams that drove me out of the hobby a few years back and I have like a PTSD reaction to them. I'm playing it safe with no bran and one bag for today for some lion's mane. If it looks good in a couple of days I might try one with bran for my shiitake. 🤞
I have been using this method to pasteurise since I found your channel last year.
I routinely use 10% soy hull pellets to supplement my beech pellets bags and have not had any problems with around 25 bags of oyster, lions mane, & shiitake.
I recently tried a 15% experiment with an oyster grow and that was also successful.
Always look forward to your videos, keep them coming. Thanks for sharing, I’ve learnt a lot from you.
That's awesome, thank you for the kind words, and for sharing your grow information. I've had more luck with adding bran so far myself, but I need to play more with the soy hull pellets. Keep up the good work 👍
Hi Ian! Just one question: Do you moisturize soy hull pellets before pasteurizing with HWFP? And thanks a lot @RenegadeMushrooms for all the information you have provided! I learned a lot from your videos :)
Hi Umut. I mix the dry soy hull pellets into the bag with the HWFP and then add hot water to them both together.
I think cottonseed hulls (with some alfalfa) are the holy grail but if only I could source them.
@@bytemuncher1have you trying sub with cottonseed and what% it's optimal?
You keep posting; I keep learning!😆Thanks so much for your videos!
I appreciate you doing those experiments. I'm always thinking of new ways to do things.
Thanks for letting us know about the discount Mycelium Emporium. This will be my first time growing mushrooms.
Yeah I got the same one from Amazon for $18 been adding it to gourmet grows, lions Maine loves it
Love the videos! I’ve had good success with lime pasteurising supplemented blocks. I’ve managed to go as high as 100g of bran to about 7 cups of pellets. I’ve only weighed them out once, I think that’s around 1kg. The key is to shake each bag as soon as the water goes in, to ensure everything gets hit with the ph change.
I’ve also had great success with your bran to grainspawn tek and have taken it up to 40g per quart jar. It’s just a pain for spawning as it takes quite a bit of digging with a spoon to get out.
Thank you for sharing your findings, the lime pasteurization sounds like a great method. Agree on the bran in the grain spawn, cool trick but gives your wrist a work-out digging it out if you let it white up hard. I really try to use my grain spawn early, even with only wispy colonization, and it still works well for me.
I also use lime pasteurization. Saves power, water, and time. So are you using dirty farm feed bran or expensive food grade bran?
I'll be trying this over the weekend for a few lions mane blocks. Hoping for good results!
Hey so im checking this out as a reference again but just wanted to say Ive had a plentyful flush of blue oysters! 😂 thank you very much not a lot of pastuerized methods I could find.
Awesome, glad it worked for you. Hope you have continued success.
Love this content 🤘🔥🔥🔥
I love it ❤
Thank you so much for this bit of knowledge. It's been a bit since I've checked on your new uploads and when I did, I realized I'm 3 days late for the M.L.King sale in Emporiums' website. Would you happen to have another discount code. I finally have everything I need to grow my 1st edibles (I think). Now I'm just in need of the LC. Any savings would help and if you're recommending 'Mycilium Emporium' that's who I'm going to purchase from. Thanks for all the time you give to teach us what you know. It's a lot of work for you and I'm very grateful. If you're to busy to respond to this I understand and thanks again for all you do.
The deal they have going now is if you select 5 syringes, you get 1 of them for free. So, essentially, it's buy 4 get 1 free. The promo code is "January" for you to get that deal. That might work for you if you want to try out some different species/strains. Lenny is a good guy, and he has a lot to choose from.
Starting A. Muscaria spores this weekend on pasturized Pine sawdust.
Have you tried colonizing this Legend before?
Do you have any tips that you'd be willing to give for this intermediate cultivator for his first attempt at cultivating a wood loving species?
Any suggestions are appreciated.
Tia
Like with any sub, moisture balance is critical with sawdust. I always tend to spawn heavy when working with a new species until I see how they behave. I've never grown muscaria, but I see them often in the wild and always appreciate their coolness.
New to the filter bags. What do you set your impulse sealer at to make a good seal on the gussets? Wish I would have seen this video an hour ago. Just pasteurized 2 bags where I dumped the wheat bran right on top of the fuel pellets. Oh well. I know next time.
Mine is set on 5, but I'm guessing they're all a little different so you might have to play a little. The key is to make sure you don't pop the arm up right away when the heating cycle finishes. Give the plastic 10 seconds to cool before popping it up.
Thanks for all your great videos, tips and tricks!!! I used the ice chest method for added heat retention and I'm getting close to full colonization on elm, mediterranean shiitake is chugging along. The very bottom of my King Tumpet didnt colonize but is starting to pin in one spot - should I fruit it or wait longer? Also, in another video you mentioned oysters (blue brats and Italian) that like it cooler and get the fridge treatment. Do you have a list of others that like a cold shock? Thanks!
If your kings are starting to pin on the top of the block, I would open the bag and let them fruit. It may be the sawdust is too wet on the bottom of the block and that's why they aren't fully colonized there. I mostly use the cold shock method with the cold loving oyster strains, but it also works well for enoki, nameko, maitake, etc. Basically any mushroom that naturally fruits in the fall of the year (which many do) will benefit from a cold shock. Thank you for watching 👍
@@RenegadeMushrooms Very good, thank you for the info. So on the bottom of the King, I did finally see some green when I brought it into the light. As soon as the sun comes out I'm taking the maginfying glass to it, sizzle sizzle, LOL! I made a batch of pasteurized blocks yesterday with hotter water this time - so much easier/faster than PC tek- THANK YOU!!
Hey- love the content. I had a question about the wheat bran. You mentioned trialing the small grocery store bag prior to going to a cheaper option (what I assume you’d get at a feed store or something). I’m having trouble finding that with basic searching online around me (New Hampshire), could you point me to the product you were talking about?
If you're looking for the bulk bags, just call around to any stores that sell livestock feed. These stores typically don't show their stock online, but you should be able to find it if you make some calls. If you strike out, you can also order the food grade bran online in larger quantities at a better price point, but the ag feed stores will have the best prices overall.
Great video! I just bought some HWFP and beet pulp pellets. I know you've done pasteurization with just HWFP but I was wondering if I could do the same with the beet pellet supplements without sterilizing it?
I've never tried them, but I would just test it out with a small batch and give it a try 👍
If you were close to a beer brewing operation, couldn't you use the spent grain with the addition of a little extra nutrition? I'm thinking along the lines of spent coffee grounds.
New York is actually full of micro-breweries now and I have several near by. I've never messed with spent brewers grains, but I know others have. Interesting idea 👍
@Renegade Mushrooms I'm not sure if it would work for grain spawn, but it could theoretically work for a substraight.
2 lbs of pellets and 2 lbs 13 oz of water? plus the wheat Bran? Do you use the Wheat Bran instead of a Master Mix approach?
Thanks so much. I enjoy your videos. :). I had bought Beet Pellets instead of soy hulls for MMix. It was what I had available
That's what it's all about, using what's readily available 👍 Yes, I follow the same recipe of HWFP to water, with the addition of the 1 cup of wheat bran (no need to add additional water). The bran boosts the nitrogen content of your block, thereby increasing your yields, but you can still get away with only pasteurizing your substrate as opposed to more time consuming/energy intensive sterilization procedures. I've had the opportunity to test the 5% bran addition enough now with my in-bag pasteurization method, that I'm comfortable saying it effectively boosts your yields without increasing contamination risk as long as you follow my methods.
In grams pleaseee
I used 900g HWFP with 1250g of water and i convertert 1 cup of bran to 240g but i think that was too much...PLEASE HELP
@@culobalugo5229 You want about 100 grams of bran to get 5%. You added around 12%. You still might be ok, just get a ton of spawn in there.
@@RenegadeMushrooms unfortunatelly,just used 1 quart jar...i'm incubating at 21c (Black Pearl King)...too late :(
Dude great video I love the experimentation, how are you pasteurizing? I’m in the process of running something similar to this with lions mane soybean hull spawn mixed 1 to 1 into pasteurized sawdust in buckets once colonized. The soybean hulls with 10% sawdust and 10% millet grainspawn surprising colonized really well even without gypsum. And I’m getting a really solid first flush from the 3 gallon buckets right now.
That's awesome. I love to hear about other peoples experiments. I developed an in-bag pasteurization method for HWFP many moons ago, so I follow that. But, I'm always experimenting with ways to improve yields without increasing contam levels. With my in-bag method and 5% wheat bran, my contam levels are basically zero.
My basic 5 to 6 lb. block recipe:
- 2 lbs. dry HWFP in a 3T grow bag
- 1/2 tsp. gypsum
- 1 level cup wheat bran
- 2 lbs. 13 oz. water at or near boiling
Add the water, seal, stack bags in a storage tote and wrap in a blanket for 60 to 90 minutes for pasteurization. Then separate and allow to cool. Once cool, spawn with 1 pint to 1 quart grain spawn. I show it in this video if you haven't seen it:
ua-cam.com/video/HD_k-dAyE5Y/v-deo.html
Do you have issues with contamination with this method? Great videos by the way. Thank you.
I basically get no contamination with this method, but I also spawn the bags in front of my flowhood. If you don't have a flowhood yet, you can just omit the bran and still have really high success rates just in a clean room. Just make sure you are adding 1 lb. of grain spawn per bag.
@@RenegadeMushrooms Thank you very much for the response.
Hello, great channel, have you tried to give bran first and then pellets?
I will test this solution with bran and corn malt dust because I have access to it and it's terribly cheap :) What was the maximum proportion of bran you tested?
So far the highest I have had success with is 10% bran.
I had no idea you could even pasteurize with wheat bran . Thinking of using wheat bran on my next turkey tail blocks . It seems to work well .
I've seen no increase in contamination with 5% wheat bran using my in-bag pasteurization method. I've also pulled off 10% without a hitch with oysters and spawning at 1 lb. per block.
@@RenegadeMushroomsI finally got around to buying some 😂😂 I realized I was having bad luck with reishi yields because I was using masters mix . I’ve finally realized that reishi likes hwfp and reishi wayyyy more
@@Allyourbase1990 If you haven't tried it yet, pick up the Ganoderma lucidum strain from Field & Forest Products. They sell LC syringes now. It's epic.
What size filter patch do you typically use for your bags? Thanks for the videos btw, very helpful and well done.
Thank you for the kind words 😁 I'm using 3T growbags right from Unicorn Bags. I bit the bullet and bought 1,000 awhile ago and have been using them ever since.
@@RenegadeMushrooms thanks!
Why wouldn't it work just putting the wheat bran in the bag first, at the bottom of the fuel pellets and then pouring the water???
The bran quickly settles to the bottom of the bag, so when you add the water it clumps up below the fuel pellets making it much harder to shake the bag to evenly distribute everything.
@@RenegadeMushrooms thanks your videos have been highly helpful I got my first 8 bags on the shelf been there for a week so far so good they look good. Pretty much used all of your methods.
Great video! What is your contam rate with this method?
Thanks! ⚛️🎆
@@sporemuse For me it's been near 0%. I honestly can't remember the last time I had a bag contaminate with this method. The heavy spawn rate is important too though to prevent contams. I use one quart of grain spawn per bag.
what would be the min percentage of grain spawn to dry weight of pellets plus bran?
2 lbs dry fuel pellets
1 cup bran (5%)
2 lbs. 12 oz. water
1 lb. spawn
That's the recipe I always use, never tried this method with less spawn so I'm not sure what the minimum would be.
@Renegade Mushroom have you noticed any differences with using different types of water like City water, well water, rainwater and is there a sweet spot for the pH of the water?
I personally use distilled water for liquid culture, but I've always just used my tap water (city water) for this pasteurization method. I understand there can be residual chlorine in city water, but it's always worked fine for me for pasteurization.
first :)
what thickness are the heat strips you use on the sealer & what number do you set your heat dial at?
mine seems to not seal correctly after sealing 20ish bags if I keep the gussets folded.
Thanks.
I use a standard amazon type 16" impulse heat sealer.
I want to say mine is a 5 mm. seal band. I have another one that's a 3 mm. and it doesn't seal nearly as well. I always set it on "5" for filter patch bags.
Maybe I missed it. How long are you pasteurizing? Thanks for the video! I tried it but didn't quite end up as clean as yours.
Anywhere from 60 to 90 minutes is fine. I've had a ton of practice 😁
I'm bouncing ideas off of you because I'm learning and taking notes. How about cooking your grain in LME or karyo syrup to add a sugar content/ booster to your grain spawn?
I actually use a nutrient broth to cook the rice in when I'm growing Cordyceps via the mycelium flood tek. I think it would be overkill for regular grain spawn production, although I've never tried it.
@Renegade Mushrooms I'm going to be doing a trial myself with my millet grainspawn. I'm thinking of adding 2g of LME Per 100ml of water when I PC my grain jars.
Mind if I asked where you got your laminar flow hood. Thanks Bill from Canada.
I built it. I've actually built two of them now. A friend is using my other one. Here's a video on my hood:
ua-cam.com/video/AE9tP61JgP8/v-deo.html
I am currently just doing 1/2 tsp gypsum and 1/2 tsp Soy Peptone which seems to be working fine but would like to boost yield and maybe get a regular 3rd flush, so Iam thinking about just adding TWO quart jars of grain spawn which would boost everything all around and should have even less possibility of contamination.
Does that sound doable or am I not seeing something?
It's worth a try and see if the extra yield is worth it. I would be interested to hear how it works for you. I would be hesitant to try it with Shiitake because I think you would get a ton of mutants because of the high N content, but not sure.
Thank you so much for the info.
Probably be a couple months before I try it but will let you know the outcome.
so after the first flush of oysters what are the next steps for the 2ns and 3rd flushes. is there a video on this
Typically with oysters you just keep them in a humid environment and let them ride. Most strains continue producing flushes without any other manipulation about a week or two apart.
How are you finding this now as far as contams? and does it improve production over just BBQ pellets alone?
Yes, it will improve your yields and I don't get any contams using this method. I always recommend beginners start with just pasteurized HWFP (no bran), because it's so forgiving. Once you get that down, then start working in supplements. This 5% bran method is a good step 2.
@@RenegadeMushrooms thx man
I just got my 16 inch impulse sealer and it is massive! Are you using a 12 inch sealer? I apologize if you mentioned this and I missed it. Thank you!
Mine probably is 12", but 16" is nice. I wish I had a 16" for doing the larger filter patch bags.
Where is the best place to get gypsom?
Any place that sells garden supplies. It's a common soil amendment.
Hello Renegade, Again. Can this be used for turkey tale as a fruit block to then put on logs or totems or can it just be left growing ?
Yes it will work well for a fruiting block or spawn, but if you're going to use it for spawn I would skip the bran and just use straight pasteurized HWFP. The bran isn't necessary in that case. Either way, make sure you are adding about 1 lb. of colonized grain spawn per block.
You can i presume inject liquid culture direct to these bags also.
Yeah that's Excellent. Thanks. @@RenegadeMushrooms
Dont you need to autoclave these?
No, I never autoclave my substrate bags. I just use a hot water pasteurization method.
Thank you. +1
I’ve tried to switch to this method, ended up contaminating about 30 bags (guess I shouldn’t have taken a big leap without testing) I’m wondering if me leaving them in a covered tote overnight is the issue? Maybe I need to add a heat pad to the bottom of the tote? Any pointers? (Cobweb mold mainly, also some like greenish mold I couldn’t identify)
Not sure, I personally haven't had any mold issues with this method, but I don't leave my bags overnight. As I mentioned in the video, I keep them warm for 60 to 90 minutes, then allow to cool. As soon as they are close to room temp (usually 2 - 3 hours) I inoculate them with 1 lb. of grain spawn. I recommend starting with unsupplemented pasteurized HWFP and mastering that before attempting to add supplementation. Also make sure your bran is clean and you use at least 1 lb. of grain spawn per bag. I would not allow your bags to sit warm overnight.
@@RenegadeMushrooms I’ll give it a go without the bran as well to see how that plays out! Thanks for the pointers. The method seems like it’ll save me endless hours vs. pressure cooking. I’ll keep you posted. Thanks again!
What might be the contamination vector for molds? Is it the bran itself or the overall process? Wondering, if it might be the bran, if you just cook the bran 20min or so before putting it into the bags.
Supplements like bran increase the chance of contamination because they make your block more nutritive. More goodies there for the mycelium and contams. Any supplementation shrinks your safe colonization window, so it's determining how much you can get away with. There are a lot of variables, but I would say anything above 10% bran, sterilization is best. Cooking the bran wouldn't be enough if you were going like 20%. You would have to sterilize your block or spawn at a crazy high rate. The contams are always there, the trick is giving your mycelium the upper hand so it can control the substrate before contams can take hold.
I actually have done my bran in jars or bags in the pressure canner prior to using it and it has helped reduce contamination
Hi thanks for the video, hwfp is not available where i live can i do it with sawdust
With raw sawdust, you will be better off sterilizing instead of pasteurizing. So, because you already have to sterilize, I would supplement with soy hulls or wheat bran so you get more yield out of each block.
Followed the recipe. After a week of the bags I noticed a couple of mold spots in the bad tho I didn’t mix the grain spawn in yet , does this mean that the bag is scrap . How far in advance shou I be making the fruiting blocks. Thanks for the help is doing maitake
You don't want to let the bags sit, you need to spawn them as soon as they are cool with this method. Since you are new to this, I wouldn't use bran for Maitake. Just weigh up 2 lbs. dry hardwood fuel pellets, then add 2 lbs. 13 oz. of boiling water. Seal the bag and let it sit for an hour warm, the let it cool. Once cool to room temp, add at least 1 lb. of Maitake grain spawn. Reseal and incubate.
I guess i jumped the gun , safe to say the bags are scrap. I will re do them when the grain spawn is fully colonized . Good trial run I did 7 bags , thanks for your help
@@JohnPLopez-tu6tp how many times should I shake the maitake grain spawn so far I did it after a week , looks like it’s growing : what should it look like started the process july 7.

Yeah it works great, I use this method all the time. Here's a king oyster grow video with bran added and only using pasteurization:

@@RenegadeMushrooms ok great I hope this will work with lions mane too
If you don’t have a sealer, how else can you seal the bag?
Zip tie or a piece of twine tied tight above the filter. But... if you're going to get into bag growing, invest in an impulse sealer, they are clutch.
TY 🍄
Much Love u Sharing 🤠
Do u monitor Temps & Humidity during process ?
Just bought hardwood fuel pellets lol TY 🍄
You can put them anywhere for incubation because the bag maintains the humidity, but you don't want it to be too warm. I prefer around 65 F. Once the mushrooms start to form, you want humidity between 80% - 90%. Temps at that point will depend on species.
can I add the wheat bran into the pellets then add the boiling water? Thanks!
Yes you can, but the wheat bran tends to want to stick to the plastic, that's why I came up with this method.
Really nice video! I've been looking for a recipe i could do to grow lions mane pausterizing the substrate. Thanks for your view, really appreciate it.
Tried a mix of rice, coco coir and straw but it didn't work out. I cooked the rice too much and then the mycelium couldn't really grow. Don't know if it would work or not but now that i know your recipe ill try using it as well. 😁👍
This recipe definitely works well for Lions Mane, I have a video on that if you're interested:

You are not shaking the bag after insert water before pasteurisation?
No, I pasteurize, let them cool, cut open, spawn, reseal, then shake.
So you're not putting those in the pc?
No, if you only use 1 cup of bran (5%) and follow my in-bag pasteurization method, no PC needed.
@@RenegadeMushrooms so how long do the bags need to pasteurize? And how long would I have to wait to inoculate? I can run any wood loving species on this? Sorry for all the questions. Thanks in advance!
What is your average oyster first flush with this method?
It's strain dependent, but usually 3/4 to 1 lb. with a 5+ lb. block.
Does this 5% recipe work with oat bran?
Never tried it, but I don't see why not.
How much grain spawn is added to the bags? One pound?
Yes, because I'm going light on supplementation I add 1 lb. The high spawn rate boosts your yield.
For lions mane, what difference in yield does 5% wheat bran supplementation make vs no supplementation? I'm kinda scratching my head over what makes the supplementation worth it from a cost vs yield perspective. A 5% wheat bran supplementation will double my substrate cost, and I imagine it's roughly the same for you, so what makes it worth it?
Just a little with 5%, but it will increase your yields. Maybe 3 - 4 oz. over three flushes. If you buy it in bulk at an ag feed store it shouldn't double your cost. I know commercial grow operations using sterilization routinely add 20% bran to their sawdust, so the yields outweigh the cost for them.

Cool, thanks.
