When I saw this first run as a little boy, I thought, "She's not hurting anybody." Now as a father to a teenage girl, I half agree with him but she is married. In my mind, different thing.
The funniest part of this skit is when Archie mimics Edith coming in .... LOL
It's kinda jarring seeing Gloria without her usualy platform shoes, she's so short!
Most sites report her height to be 5' 1". That's probably about right.

When you compare Mike and Gloria's more carefree earlier days in their marriage, to the period after Mike got his degree his attitude changed drastically towards Gloria. He was always somewhat condescending but it morphed into something far worse. Reminds me of my daughter's ex-fiance. After getting an engineering degree, he had five different companies [ including Lockheed Martin ] trying to hire him. He ended up going with Northrop Grumman. Anyway. his attitude towards her began to slowly change and he became more critical, mean, and condescending and it got worse as time moved on. She's no dummy and was attending college herself but he never supported her nor had any interest in what she was trying to accomplish. They ended up separating [ for other reasons ] and he actually did apologize for the way he treated her those last three years and admitted that the job went to his head but by then it was too late.

I was a teenager when AITF was a hit show. Everybody talked about it because it was so raw, shocking, and still hilarious. We’d never seen any like it before.
My father was in complete tears and we had never seen him laugh like that in our whole lives.

I agree with Archie at the beginning. The meathead eats so much that he should know what's in the fridge before he even opens it. He calls him a meathead because sometimes he does meatheaded things like this sometimes.

Archie wasn't really what I would call a Christian. He identified as Christian, but that means nothing.
@@amierichan7231 Actually, Archie WAS a Christian. He did not just 'identify' as one. This was seen many times throughout the series. Even though he did not go to church, he believed in God, was scared of God's wrath to a great degree, he prayed and he believed in Christian morals.

He was really an under appreciated actor, I think.
I liked his portrayals in movies, too. “Heat Of The Night”, “Kelly’s Heroes”, etc. He was a strong, reliable, actor, with a lot more layers than that of the perfect conservative he played on “AITF”. Carrol O’Connor was excellent in every role he played.

She got attacked by a Construction worker, with NO consequences, because of the Humiliation rape victims suffered in Court, back then. EDITH, OTOH, for all her timid nature, shoved a hot cake in the face of HER intended attacker, and got Away!

Edith also kept her head, when a relative Died upstairs, and stood up to Archie, when he wanted to turn in an Ex-Convict, who was doing work for them.

I never understood Archie's POV here. He doesn't mind Gloria wearing "next to nothing" on a public beach where anyone can get a peek, but he doesn't want her doing it behind closed doors in the privacy of her own home. Sorry, doesn't make sense.
it does to me... Archie doesn't go to the beach so he wouldnt have to see them AND at the beach everyone is in swimsuits so there is no awkwardness between clothed and unclothed people. in his own house he feels awkward around them.
I completely understand Archie here, the whole concept is...time and place. There's a time and place for everything and parading around your father in a bikini in the house aint it, especially when the guy was born in a time where women wore what look like rompers to the beach. Michael and Gloria were constantly disrespectful to Archie, regardless of his views it was still his house and they were grown not little kids.
I agree with what the others said on this thread. A time and a place for everything. Also, you need to understand Archie's generation and the way they thought. Which is totally the opposite of today's generations

I remember about 40 years ago, the woman next door to us was going to have a baby and was probably in her third trimester. They had a pool in their yard and one day, this woman came out with her husband for a swim and she was wearing a bikini. Well, my mother saw her and hit the roof! She went on and on in pure Archie Bunker style about how inappropriate it was for a woman that far along to wear such a thing and how she had no modesty, etc.. Even though it was on their own property.
Yep, it's about time and place--and era. When I first started school in 1969, you had to dress well--even in kindergarten. You could only wear sneakers in gym class and t-shirts were not allowed. Within a couple of years though, the dress codes went out the window. People generally only wore swimsuits at the beach or at a swimming pool. Look at how people used to dress at sporting events in the 1950s and 1960s.
@@Lava1964 I couldn't agree with you more! I, too, started school in the fall of 1969 and it was exactly as you describe! But by the time I got to high school everything had changed. And not for the better. We still couldn't wear shorts or sweatpants and girls could not have a bare midriff and also boys couldn't wear sandals/flip flops (what the kids today call 'slides') but that was about it. Other than those, all bets were off.
You're right about the sporting events too! My late aunt and uncle were season ticket holders at the New York Jets. They took me to see a game in 1975. I remember my aunt dressing in a pants suit and my uncle wore wool dress slacks, a cashmere cable knit sweater and his good leather dress jacket with a fur lining. Most other people were dressed similar. Today they all look like they just got off an 8 hour shift on a garbage truck!

LOL Compared to what I used to wear back in the late 70s and up into the mid-1980s to the beach what Gloria's wearing is very modest. I wore string bikinis.

Something in this episode I never understood. After Mike and Gloria go upstairs you don't see them for the rest of the episode (ok I know what they were doing). But Frank and Irene come over with a nice cold meal and only the 4 of them sit at the table, Mike and Gloria are not invited downstairs to join them. What were they supposed to have for dinner? Mike was hungry and all he got was a popsicle.
