  • Usually, art doesn’t have to tell you why its good, it just kinda shows you. Through an enchanting hum of colors and sequences, you may feel elevated, in ways that only good art seems to understand. It doesn’t have to take much, and sometimes just a little will do its job; that’s kind of the point isn’t it? To be moved unexpectedly. This is how Blue Eye Samurai moved me unexpectedly. Enjoy!

This show is the distillation of “every frame a painting”. Not just visually, but thematically as well. Practically every scene can stand on its own because of the direction and writing- you can pick any episode and show a scene to someone, and I can guarantee they’ll be at least slightly intrigued, if not hooked.

While watching it, all I could be reminded was of the 1950s-60s samurai epics.
Yes, some of the fights lasted longer than they should have, but it was a definite homage to a genre that many talk about, but few manage to symbollically execute.
A job well done to its creators.

Mizu is great, I can't wait to see where her character goes. Give me Season 2 now! That said, I want to bring up another series, maybe a little out of disappointment for its underground popularity, but also for its similarity to Blue Eye Samurai as a historical fiction. That series is Vinland Saga, and I really can't recommend it enough, especially if you enjoyed Blue Eye Samurai, fans of it would find a lot to love with this series as well. It has a similarly complex story about a character on a quest for revenge and it follows his journey through loss, grief, emptiness, trauma, and a surprising character shift I would rather not spoil. Among the protagonist, however, is a cast of phenomenal characters, one going by the name of Hild, a woman seeking vengeance against our protagonist. Think of The Last of Us 2, except this time everyone loves it. Her character is one of the best portrayals of loss, grief, the desire for vengeance, and what that does to person, ever written, in my opinion. Even if she is beaten out by the series' protagonist in those areas, she acts as a mirror for him, and the product of that is just wonderful.
If any who read this comment have not given Vinland Saga a chance, please do. Watching it is perfectly fine, I even think the anime's opening is superior to the manga's, but reading it is the best way to experience the story overall, in my opinion.
Sorry if this feels really out of place, I just think Vinland Saga deserves some of the mainstream popularity that Blue Eye Samurai is getting, which it also deserves, I don't mean to say anything should be taken from it, just that more should be given to Vinland Saga as well.

The Vinland saga is certainly a good anime but by far no in the liga of Blue Eye, Arcane, Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell, Avatar and other classics. It felt like a light version of Berserk. And falls of after the mid of S1. Onimusha and Berserk was way better written.

But I don't think most people would ever put Blue Eye Samurai, as good as it was, in the same league as the others you mentioned. I also don't much see the similarities to Berserk, they are there to be sure and Yukimura was heavily influenced by Miura no doubt, but both are very different in numerous ways. Still, as hot a take as it is, I respect it.

Blue Eye Samurai is one of my favorite shows to have come out in recent years, and you did a great job articulating how beautiful it is. If you're looking for recommendations for more anime/animated series, I'd have to suggest Vinland Saga (as I've seen someone else has already mentioned) if you want another revenge story. If you're looking for something with a similar art-style to Blue Eye Samurai and that also has well-written female characters, I highly recommend Arcane (my all-time favorite). It's technically not anime, but it's animated so I'm including it in this list of recommendations. It's basically a modern version of a Greek tragedy in a fantasy setting. Finally, if you want more traditional, classic anime, I suggest Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood or Death Note.

Hopefully you'll take this as constructive criticism rather than a hate comment, because I loved your Andor video essay, and enjoy your channel.
Frankly, I can't help but feel that this video (and some others of yours) consist of a profound verbal diarrhea. I find myself constantly rewinding sentences that seem to have no distinct meaning, or a meaning that is almost completely obscured how abstract your vocabulary is. For example: "Things that will change me without cost or consideration". It seems like a sensible statement on the surface, but less so upon closer inspection. Cost to what? You or the show? Consideration for what? Your feelings? The sentence kinda has a meaning, but the verbiage is so vague, and the pace of your narration is so quick and uninterrupted, that I can't make sense of a third of your sentences sometimes. I find myself borderline dissociating while watching some of your videos.
I say this with much respect as I still enjoy many of your video essays, and share pretty much all of your opinions.

Love this . . . . love the Last Samurai arrangements. Just stumbled across your channel (apparently watched your Andor video a while back) and very much enjoying the poetry of your words and thoughts. IDK if you've read Rothfuss but you definitely tap into the sleeping mind for your videos. I disagree with some elements--I loved Dune but have my criticisms, and I think there's no way it has the warmth or retains the staying power it would need to become on par with, say, LOTR. That said . . . . when I step back and consider the world of sci-fi in general, I find us sadly lacking in stories of this scope and human scale. Dune does get at that core of intimacy, ritual, zeal, and such concepts which are often lacking in the generally very 'concept-centric' realm of sci-fi. Nolan captures the concept, the 'zoomed out' poetry of ideas, the power of visuals to convey conscious concept. . . . Villeneuve captures a bit less, and much more in other realms. Very much as you say, he lets imagery do so much work, he uses words with perfect multi-layered restraint (like a fairy tale, I suppose), he provides enough stillness to prompt contemplation/revelation of the multi-layered motifs that inhabit (or perhaps resonate in) our subconscious . . . . but Dune and Bladerunner are, in the end, narrow and grand questions about humanity, with somewhat narrow and grand scope for expression. If you inject too much real nuance, too much humor, too much Martinesque grappling with moral grey, too much LOTR warmth and fellowship, too much Nolanesque concept . . . . you lose that delicate balance of poetry. It's a film I experienced, and experienced, and experienced (I've watched it three times) but each time I came back, I feel I've had enough time to think and notice where it crumbles, or where it will simply not have that staying power. It's perfect in many ways for what it is supposed to be, but I don't know if the 'sort' of story is prepared to be as grand and deeply moving as something like LOTR or GOT was for me. I'm still waiting for my sci-fi miracle, I guess.
    For me, at least.
Some of the Dune video essay was very pretty words, and I WANTED it to be true, but just didn't feel it was :(
Anyway I agree with this piece much more thoroughly. I guess it's rather funny to leave this long comment here and not on the other vid.

Which sets a tone that is as captivating as it is well-crafted?? What the hell was any of that supposed to mean? 😂 I guess I get what were trying to convey but it’s genuinely all wrong. If anything, your simile is more akin to a furnace, where things are heated and set glowing hot to mold them into something useful and effective later? But jeez, microwaves don’t even really function on a temperature basis, more like cooking power. And I don’t think I would describe anything that came out of a microwave as captivating or well-crafted. And I definitely would not agree that violence is captivating to a broad audience at all. Sure it can catch the attention of the audience and peak interest, but unless we are talking about kungfu movies, violence is rarely the medium through which the story is told. It’s used more often than not to highlight the extremities of the subject at hand. But you got me interested in this anime, so your strange but effective tactic worked this time.

However, this does not change the fact that we are talking about this from a western standpoint and not an eastern one. So this still changes nothing. Yes, maybe the Japanese call all animation anime, but the word anime in the west refers to Japanese animation.

It has everything you want from anime and does everything strong female protagonist blah blah blah. What about the writing? It's so bad it's amazing and no reviewer seems to be addressing the herd of elephants in the room. We got Bluey doing the impossible constantly, her enemies are all morons, and the conveniences are ridiculous. That goes for the other characters too.
No, give anime another chance. Not DBZ, but something like Full Metal Alchemist or Cowboy Bebop or Ghost in a Shell (if it must be a female protag). They're all written better than this.

This isn’t anime, this is an animated show, don’t be fooled by the setting. Real anime is bottom of the barrel dogshit 90% of the time. This is coming from someone who watches really shitty anime when he wants to turn his brain off.

@@jachyra9 I think most people would agree there is a difference between anime and traditional animation
