Andor's Historic 11th Hour For Star Wars

  • During episode 11 of Andor we are treated to the very moment at which Luthen and Saw agree to war on the Empire. This is a moment of immense weight and the way it was handled was subtle and wonderful. I cannot stop thinking about this scene, and how important it is to.... everything. So, I had to talk about it. Luthen and Saw are two keystones to the rebellion against the Empire, and if nothing else, Andor showed us just how important one single person can be in this fight. I love how this moment was brought to life. Enjoy!

Andor is honestly the lens through which I filter the rest of Star Wars. It is the pinnacle. I’m glad that content creators such as yourself can value the series to the level it deserves.

Agreed. You cannot have the real Star Wars without the real Empire, and damn, does Andor have the real Empire. Not cartoon baddies, but very smart and capable officers trying to spread civilization and order to the universe, but being corrupted by the power of it and the evil that inevitably grows or infiltrates as a parasite into it. They're formidable and serious. You're with them or you're under them and are not to be taken lightly.
They also get the history right. They aren't just some cheap placeholder for Nazis. Any one person might be trying to do their duty, but in aggregate, they are using the indigenous under the guise of spreading civilization. One of my favorite moments in Andor is about their systems are so much more civilized or how they've spread equal rights or whatever, and they say it like how could we be the bad ones? Many echoes to politics now and always, regardless of side, because it understands what the Empire is... It's efficiency and power corrupting good intentions in it's unquestionability.

It's mad we got something s grounded and mature like his, only to follow with Ahsoka, cartwheeling on spaceships and hitching rides with space whales. It's mental.

I think there's room (and a need) for both to exist, I will say I havent been a fan of the writing in Ahsoka but the ideas they present are kinda awesome. Andor is Star Wars as it was in the OT and Ahsoka is Star Wars as it was in the Prequels - both work for sure. Ahsoka just needs better writing honestly, but I've been enjoying the show@@D0CBEE

To me Andor is like if Tolkien made a Lord of the Rings prequel about the Stewards of Gondor. A more grounded tale about the men who for generations held the forces of Mordor, forces they could never truly defeat, at bay so that one day Aragon, Frodo, and the Fellowship could finally defeat Sauron.

I love, among many other things, how Andor rescued the story of Saw Gerrera, his bandit style and values, and his paranoia. I watched Rogue One again after Season 1 and it was even better than before. I truly hope this starts a new lineage of storytelling in Star Wars and beyond.

What I love about this moment is that it is one of a few moments where the shows asks the difficult question: how far are you willing to go for your convictions? And the show doesn’t weasel out of it. Luthen’s convictions push him to sacrifice comrades because it is necessary for the bigger picture. Luthen and the show don’t present this idea and then find a way for everyone to have their cake and eat it too. The show says, these are the hard questions and these characters have to make life altering decisions.

Ever since franchise prequels became a thing I’ve been disappointed by the results, often (unfairly) comparing them and feeling the immediate need to rewatch the originals simply to find satisfaction and solace in the nostalgia. ANDOR is how I wanted prequels to be: introducing new characters and storylines that are engaging while simultaneously adding depth and complexity to the originals. This show has been sooooooo satisfying on every level, to me. I hope you continue to make more ANDOR-related essays because I enjoy your observations and because there are too many brilliant moments to analyze and breakdown. I’ll be here for every single one of them. Until then, thanks for this one.

Andor has done something special in that it has made so much other things better.
The empire has never felt as haunting and terrifying as after watching Andor, the rebellion never felt as significant and grounded before this show.
It’s like reverse fan service. I can now watch the OT and when Mon Mothma hits the screen, in the back of my head, I hear her soundtrack from Andor and clap my hands, just like when the general audience goes “Wohooo” when threepio is introduced for the twentieth time in a generic Disney product, I go “F*** yeah, you guys listen to what the f*** she has to say!”
Blowing up the (first) Death star is no longer an achievement on Lukes behalf, but the climax of the lifelong work of some unsung heroes that deserves medals as much as Chewie ever did.
I just really hope that Kennedy stays as far away from this as possible and we can get a second and last season of the same calibre. The world and character building deserves it.

I totally understand what you’re saying. IMO, ANDOR is, by most all tangible measures and many intangible ones, an objectively finer execution of the most fundamental themes of the entire IP: The battle against tyranny and fascism. Andor is a legitimate masterpiece of modern storytelling, in all categories.
However, I think a direct comparison between this show and the OT should take into account that audiences are far more sophisticated today & consume entertainment differently than before. Furthermore, Andor benefits from a very very long format which allows for incredible depth and latitude in writing.
The OT had the benefit of fantastic mythos packaged in a clear, concise and easily digestible Hero’s Journey for the masses…Which worked perfectly for the needed escapism of the time. Prior to that, Sci-Fi was only for kids and didn’t yet realize the how powerful the art form could be for igniting self-reflection as it does today.

this is what Star Wars needs to be. Creators, writers, actors and everyone in between all at the top of their game. People focused solely on making a compelling story and NOT some other agenda. that's the thing about films and shows. If you make a quality product everything else will come with it. Fail to do this and you will fail in every way possible.

Great video! I'm watching Rebels for the first time to get the most out of Ahsoka, and in S4E03, Mon Motha tells Ezra "...we were routed by Thrawn's starfleet and taught a valuable lesson, that we are not ready for open war." and Ezra replies, "Yeah? Well some people say it's already begun." then Mothma, "Indeed they do." They obviously couldn't have known this in 2017 when the show was released, but now it's easy to imagine she's thinking of Luthen in this moment. I hope we get a powerful and meaningful conclusion to Luthen's arc in the next season.
I'm planning to show the wife who has never seen any Star Wars Andor once both seasons are out, then Rogue One, then the OT. How much more will Luke's perfect shot at the end of IV mean when it has the entire backstory of those who made it possible resting on it for the very first time? I'm excited to be able to present the franchise in this unique way.

There was a brief moment when Andor actually made me like the original trilogy LESS, because they are both products of their time, trying to do different things. Expecting one to be like the other isn't fair. And I bristled for a moment that while Luke might seem like a nobody, he's always been the son of Anakin Skywalker, the son of a jedi. Even before you learn that Vader was his father, we know that Luke's father was of an equal with Vader, this creature who seems to be "special." And the notion that all these ordinary people died/perservered throughout the early days of the rebellion just so a Jedi could step in and finish the job seemed a bit icky. But then I remembered the Second Death star-- this was brought down by Lando and Wedge. The shield was turned off by Han, Leia, some droids, and some ewoks. There were no super-powers or super-men involved in its destruction. Similarly, Luke and his powers could not have destroyed the first Death Star if it weren't for Han. And Episode V colors the whole myth of the hero--- he might have powers and lineage, but he is flawed, which makes him potentially more dangerous than anyone. And then of course, the prequels show all the flaws of those with special powers. Maybe the rebels hope for the jedi to return and save them. But maybe too they know that they must do their part until that day comes. I wonder how part 2 of Andor will fit into all of this.

The responsibility of the acts needed to be done and the maturity to accept it in order to step down as the war is won or face a repeating cycle of liberation/authoritarianism/revolution/war. Sacrifice oneself, and let the idealist visionaires with cleaner hands to take over ensure a progressing stability.

I don't your think assertions on this scene are valid. When Saw says let's call it war, it's not a joint declaration of the opening of hostilities with the Empire.
The question being asked is how do we live with this, how do we justify this betrayal of Kreegyr to ourselves.
Luthen has no interest in equivocating or moralizing, he knows warning Kreegyr is risky and stupid, letting him die grants far more benefits to "Rebellion" than trying to save him. Call it what you want.
Saw chooses to say this is the exigencies of war.
Don't forget, Kreegyrs organization was weak. His pilot fucked up twice, first by panic flashing the stolen ID, and second, not resisting inter.... allowing himself and his ship to be captured alive and intact. The pilot was not a true believer. who's fault is this? Kreegyr. Bad recruiting, bad operational security.
Do you think Cinta would have given up the Spellhaus info? No. The instant she fucked up and was at risk of capture, shed self destruct and try to take as many Imps as possible to hell with her.
I don't think much changes in the activity level of either org before or after this scene. Saws paranoia goes up. He knows Luthen has a spy in his org. How else did he know to show up that day?

I think both these interpretations are accurate. Just because the collective ideology of “war” is declared, doesn’t mean immediate altercations follow. That wasn’t the point of the scene. The scene CHOSE to give us the exact moment at which the recognition of the situation escalated to a point of declaring it WAR, that was its message, which is what I emphasize during the video. It’s not about the action, it’s the positioning. I think you’re seeing exactly what I’m seeing, but from a different point of view

@@SpacemanSR Never saw this reply, love talking Andor. At this point I'm getting slightly concerned, the rendering farm of my brain isn't moving on.
So, if I understand what you're saying, my next question is how you would define or conceptualize Saw and Luthen's mentality before this point? As I interpret it, they have both been "at war" with the Empire for a very long time, surely before this shows timeline began.
Also, do you agree that the reason Luthen is here is to prevent Saw from joining Kregyr on his attack?
So after Luthen says "if I were ISB...". Saw says "30 men, Luthen says "Plus Kregy.r" I see Saw as now fully understanding Luthens reasoning and motivations for allowing Kregyr to die, and learning more about Luthens decision making process. For the most part, he's neutral emotionally. Luthen is processing deep shame due to the divide between his head and his heart. He has not killed the part of his heart that believes in right and wrong though he recognizes it's a liability. "For the greater good" is an equivocation Luthen has no interest in, empty words to him in that moment. Its for his and Saws good, and Kregyr was dead regardless, so this is how we maximize our advantage from his death. Luthen hates himself for making the correct tactial move. Saw, seeing this doesn't sit well with Luthen at all, drills deeper into the core of the ultimate solution/explanation. He says, in response to "Call it what you wlll.", "Let's call it ... war". What Saw really means is Luthen, these are the exigencies of war. As men who the lives of our people depend upon, irregardless about how we feel about letting Kregyr die, we have no other real choice. That's my read.
      Also, INTJ?

Andor is a piece of art and anyone who says otherwise is willfully shooting themselves in the foot. SW isn't a genre, it’s a universe and many different genres, themes, characters, and stories have yet to be discovered in that universe. If someone wants the 'feel' of the old movies there is good news, the old movies still exist, so literally go watch them again. As horrendous as some of the Last Jedi was I have grown to appreciate that Rian was also trying to make something new, his execution in some of that 'newness' was very questionable but the stuff that worked really worked. This misguided unconscious consensus of SW fans that we need to ‘recapture’ those feelings from the first films has led to an over saturation of bad SW trying to live up to something it shouldn’t even need to. Every SW project doesn’t need the same themes, characters, and feeling as the OG trilogy, that'd get repetitive and very boring. Most new projects have virtually become parodies of the source material where nothing is left but references cameos, and generic mic-drop lines that fit in any situation. I love Andor not just because it is full of heart, nuance, and complex storytelling in a thematically dark setting but also because of what it represents: innovation of SW and a new hope that future SW projects don't have to be self referential, sloppily written, poorly executed, mass produced projects rather than pieces of art that stand on their own merit. Disneys and the fans problem has been thinking that SW is a genre and everything must fit into very confined rules. If someone thinks Andor is too boring they need to consider spending less time feeding their dopamine receptors with stuff like Tik Tok and take the time to pay attention to what’s happening between action sequences. They’ll realize that that there is a lot of nuance and character work happening, it is a masterclass of writing and direction. If someone thinks Andor doesn't feel like SW they need to reframe how they understand the IP, it is not a genre of itself. The themes, characters, settings, sounds, textures, virtually everything is straight out of the Lucas doctrine and what story he was trying to tell. If someone thinks it stands shoulder to shoulder on equal footing as Obi Wan, Ahsoka, or Boba Fett they need to try and summarize one of those shows and try to summarize Andor, the difficulty to do so for Andor succinctly is indicative of the complex level of detail and care. Andor is lightyears ahead of those shows in virtually every cinema or storytelling criteria. Anyone who loves this show should be promoting it and recommending it to everyone they know. Systems either change or die and there is only one way out of this SW slump of bad media.

If you mean Saw Guerrera's cave - it's a real location in England, but filming during series 2 was abandoned, because it was about to collapse. It disrupted filming.
The whole show was filmed in the UK during Covid ... Aldhani IS the highlands of Scotland, including one of its largest hydro-electric power stations.
"Space Miami" is 4 miles north of Blackpool, just 150 miles south of Scotland.
Coruscant was basically the more interesting parts of modern London architecture, done with some green screen to add in the flying cars.
Coruscant spaceport was McLaren's F1 centre - done up with green screen.
Ferrix was a completely built set, but green screen was used for the upper structures, like bell-tower, and extending the crowd way back down Rix Road.

So, it’s like it doesn’t matter what this guy does because in the end he doesn’t matter considering someone else not of this series is the one really responsible for bringing together the whole Rebel Alliance in the first place.
