Iv been fishing jerk baits for close to 15 years and have always used a spinning rod. When I first started I used 6-8lb test and did awesome. Somewhere along the way I saw most pros were using 10-12lb test and I switched. Thank God I started learning from you and I'm back to the 6-8lb test and it has put money in my boat the last 2 years. Hands down I'm getting my baits deeper then every one else and getting bigger and more bites. I hope people don't listen to you. Lol

I switched to a 7' medium fast spinning with a lews hypermag 200 for jerkbaits after watching your videos Randy. Since then, I have absolutely killed them on that setup... the feel is amazing. This tip is so right.

You definitely have some good points! Although when you step up your equipment casting distance and sensitivity are no longer an issue. Id much rather throw jerkbaits on my 6'6 medium Expride w/ a scorpion dc over my spinning rod. The faster rod helps me control it easier when I need to slow down and the baitcaster helps me be super accurate. Can cast a 110 a damn mile. Again I see what you are saying.

How freaking far do you need to throw it. It's a personal preference what rod you like I use both and get plenty of distance out of both. The water I fish does not require 6# test or 12' depth.
My favourite rod is the Megabass - Orochi XX - F4.1/2-68XX - JERKBAIT SPECIAL - Bait Casting Rod. Has a very nice tip, long cast with 10lb Sunline fluoro or 15lb braid depending on the situation on a Daiwa Steez.
Went into the local store and saw an orochi xx ronin. Knowing nothing about the rod picked it up and it felt like Excalibur in my hands. Went home and watched some videos/read some reviews. Because of your videos ended up with that rod and couldn’t be happier. Also great for small topwaters as well!
Spinning reel itself I find helps keep the fish pinned as you can adjust the drag just right. My rod is probably a terrible rod for the job (definitely stiffer than what’s ideal) but I’d take it over the best casting rod for the job.
I have better feel with a casting rod , but totally agree you can get better distance for deeper water situations with spinning set-up. Your talking deeper suspending jerks with spinning , makes sense. In Texas we use a lot of twitch or floating jerkbaits. … I like a 4 power 6’6” Falcon Casting rod for my shallow water target jerks. I have my jerk rods customized with a 7” cork handle , makes a nice target casting set-up, and much easier to stay in contact with the jerkbait with the shorter rod handle. You need to differentiate between Table Rock jerking with 6lb. Test and Texas shallow jerking with usually 10 or 12lb. Line ……two totally different methods.
Good points Randy. I use an Orochi Ronin and I will agree, you can work the bait in much more angles and ways using a spinning rod.
Agree 100%. I’ve argued this point tooth and nail, especially with younger guys. And being able to reel with my left hand, snd jerk with my dominant arm makes it much more efficient.
Made the switch to spinning rods ever since I heard David Dudley talk about how you talked him into it. I definitely feel like it’s a lot less tiring and it’s easier to snap the rod with your pointer finger on the rod
I use a spinning rod for my jerkbaits. Simply because I had an older Shimano spinning rod that I wasn’t really using at the time when I started to try jerkbaits, I thought it had a good action for jerks. It worked out so well I always used it. Great tips, thanks!
Excellent advice Randy. You just saved me the cost of running out and getting a baitcasting rod for jerkbait fishing. I already have a nice med fast 6:6 spinning Rod that I will try for smallies this season in the mighty Canadian north. Just hope a huge northern doesn't snap my line off too often.
Totally agree, did this 3 years ago, spinner is king for this technique.
3 biggest bass I caught was in the middle of winter talking 7lb plus bass on jerkbaits n bait casters but it wasn't till I learned what makes a jerk bait truly work for this to make sense Randy is the perfect cheat sheet

I agree with you Randy. I do a lot of jerk bait fishing in the fall and spring and used both spinning and baitcasting. For me the wrist movement needed to impart the action to the rod is a lot easier to accomplish with a spinning rod vs a baitcaster. I use a St. Croix Avid 7' medium power fast action rod and a reel spooled with 14# Fireline Crystal braid with a 4-6' flouro leader. I've had no problem working the Vision 110 or deep divers on the set up. The only knock I have on using the spinning rod is you really need to be careful about keeping the line tight on the spool and preventing loops. Otherwise at some point you are going to have 2 or 3 lines coming off the spool at the same time - not good!!
🎯🎯🎯🎯on the line coming off the spool. I use the fairy wand for drop shots, wacky rig, neko rig, ned rig. I prefer to throw jerkbaits on a baitcaster, my set up is a Curado MGL 150 on a Shimano Expride 6'10"M. But hey to each their own though. Go out there fish and have fun!
Well, it all makes perfect sense… I’ve been thinking about this subject for some time after watching a few videos on guy’s jerking with spinning rod’s ( and a couple of your video’s ) so I went to garage to see if I had a rod that would fit the bill and pulled a rod off of the wall ( a rod I haven’t used in a decade or more ) and it’s absolutely perfect for jerkbait fishing. 6’8”, medium/fast, Shimano Curado. I’ll pair it up with one of my Shimano Sedona 2500’s. Great little budget jerkin set up 🎣

I love cold rivers, balanced jerkbaits on a spinning rod and light line in the winter here in Oklahoma.

All the best smallmouth guys up here in Canada have been using spinning rods while jerkbait fishing for years. You forgot to mention how smooth the drags are on spinning reels. Especially with smallies that go crazy at the boat

38 years of jerk baits for me. That's before jerk baits were even a thing and we were weighting with lead wire and suspend strips and dots. Drilling baits and adding weights. Even filling them with water. Smithwicks are still a mainstay in my box.
Wow this is great info! I rarely fish jerkbaits but I caught a 6lb largemouth on a luckycraft pointer minnow this year using my Dobyns crankbait rod but it was awkward so I decided to look for a dedicated jerbait rod. I would much rather use a spinning rod for jerking than a casting rod. Thanks
Randy, I can see several advantages of using a spinning rod such as longer casts and such, But feel and action is my hang up here. Action and feel are mostly due to components used and mostly the blank used. The same blank can be used for either spinning or casting, just different guides and reel selection. How would that effect action if the same blank is used?

I just picked up my 27th and 28th (this year) on Ebay. They were a JDM color, "Deadly Fish" and an OLD, Limited Edition, 'Special USA Run' color, "Smallmouth Bass". $42 & $88, respectively, but I'm absolutely tickled! It gave me chills when I opened the box and saw them!

Randy, I have watched several of your jerk bait setup videos. You always reference the whipsnake megabass rod, but you also refer to it as a med action and moderate fast tip. Megabass refers to that rod as ML and XF. I just want to make sure I am on the correct rod. They suggest Ronin is the rod designed for 110s. Are you indeed using the Whipsnake ML XF?

I dont understand how it changed. In the 90s and early 2000s everyone threw jerkbaits on spinning combos with 6-8 lb mono. You could cast it a mile and the control was perfect. It has now turned into people throwing it on baitcast combo with 10-12 lb flouro. The castability and control alone is the reason i throw jerkbaits on a spinning combo.
I take it this advice is primarily aimed at reservoirs where the primary cover is rock and wood. 6lb test long casts, and milfoil sounds like a brutal combination.
Thanks randy great tips. In my opinion the spinning reel really excels in clear water. Around docks and stuff I love being able to roll cast with that trigger rod

Anyone who grew up throwing floating rapalas before mega bass should remember that a spinning rod gives the bait better action with less underwater travel per twitch. I myself am guilty of using a bait caster with a jerk bait too often. This video helped remind me to go back to the spinning rod this winter. Thanx Randy!!!
How would the action be different with the same twitch and power/action rod regardless of style?
The spinning rod helps reduce angler fatigue on a long day! I always believed spinning rod eas the way to go. I have never; even able to get the action out of a casting rod. Even tho it's medium action. It isn't the same. I think the flimsy rod tip comes back faster. Allowing the slack line. I've had jerk baits turn around backwards. But I can't do it eith a casting rod
I changed two years ago to spinning ten pounds line did very good and won our club tourament I agree with you better all around.
Spinning gear has been my go to for jerkbaits. I’ve got a 6’6” bait caster that would probably work decent as well if I need something a bit heavier.
I don’t think spinning gear is that uncommon but it’s definitely not what’s marketed as appropriate for Jerkbaits

I took your advice months ago and throw my jerkbaits on a medium ALX spinning rod (can't afford Megabass, LOL), Shimano spring reel, spooled with 6# Seaguar yellow label. It really does make a difference.

Yes he does...lol Baitcaster vs Spinning for throwing jerkbaits is so subjective, one opinion will be different from another. In my opinion the Fairy wand is good for finesse fishing.

I took Randy's advice on this last year and converted to a spinning outfit for jerkbaits. The only exception like he said is fishing really shallow. Won't go back.
I have to agree on the spinning reel thing if I am fishing for musky I will use a bait caster with large minnow type plugs !!!!!!

I believe that's the key right there what you just said is the big hawkin jerk Baits you kinda need a baitcasting but the littler ones work better with the lighter spinning rod And what I mean by that is like summer time fishing you gotta rip that bait you just can't do that with 6 8 pound test , well I love both ways that's my 2 cents
I don't mind throwing a smaller jerkbait on a spinning rod, but on a 110 or bigger I prefer a baitcasting setup. Plenty of distance and easier to work the bait imo.

I been trying to get one of the megabass levante jerkbait rods for over a year now, everytime some hit stock somewhere they sell out. Maybe I should just follow your advice and use a spinning rod. I agree that you can do more with a spinning rod, and I use left hand baitcasters, so I cast and reel baitcaster without changing hands and stuff, but I can still feel and do more with a spinning rod.
Take a look at the Shimano Expride 6'10"M. I have mine paired with a Curado MGL 150 with 10lb fluorocarbon
I use a Whipsnake for jerkbaits too but FYI a Megabass Hyuga 6'7 ML Rod has the same perfect action as the Whipsnake. I still prefer the spinning over BC for jerks.

Would you still use a spinning rod on a lake where 30 pound sacks usually win? I fish Clear Lake team tournaments and the jerk bait is always a main player there in cold water months. I have been using the spinning rod on my home small mouth lake in Idaho and I like it. Fun!

Megabass' relaunch of the orochi xx line has adjusted the lure ratings on some of the rods (mainly spinning rods). I've watched some of your jerkbait vids where you've talked about the whipsnake but the whipsnake you're using is from the older orochi line, thus the lure rating (and possibly the action) is different. The lure rating on the new whipsnake is 1/16 - 3/8 where the older one is rated up to 1/2. So if you're throwing a standard 110, I don't think the current model is enough rod for the 1/2oz + lure. A better option is probably the Ronin (rated 1/4 -3/4) or possibly the shakey head (1/8-1/2) - though the shakey head is faster and isn't as parabolic, as it's a bottom contact rod. If anyone is looking for a designated jerkbait spinning rod the Ronin is probably your best bet but if you're looking for a very sensitive and versatile rod, the shakey head might be the ticket.

Rod ratings are very abstract
I've tried it on a spinning rod and although the casting distance is way better I find it's not as comfortable twitching a spinning rod for long periods.
You're using the wrong power rod. If you're using anything over 3/8 oz, then a Med.-Hvy spinning rod should be the rod of choice.
@@Unspoke I'm using a 7ft M/MF spinning rod but it's the reel that makes my hand feel uncomfortable. I'm going to experiment with it some more but I still like the feel of a baitcaster over a spinning rod for this technique. I just bought a stratic reel today so maybe that will be more comfortable.
In not sure what you're using but twitching a spinning rod with a forward grip is something you can do all day. Megabass, daiwa and st.croix (victory) are pretty good for that.

Randy, I agree with you 100%. Spinning setups are the way to go for jerkbait fishing. Case and point: I hit a couple of Lakes in Northern Michigan last week and the wind was blowing hard even up to 25 and 30mph at times. My Baitcaster was only effective when the wind died down and I wasted time picking out line a good bit, b/c the wind was changing so frequently. My spinning setup was slinging jerkbaits and was clearly the winner in distance and effectiveness. Do you have a budget recommendation for a spinning jerkbait rod?

I flats fish in Florida where long casts are needed, nobody throws baitcasters cause they simply can't out cast a spinning out fit.
I’ve switched to a spinning rod for jerking (6’6” medium fast Daiwa Tatula, 3500 size reel, 8lb invizx) you’re right about the casting distance! I’ve used it all summer and caught sooo many fish. I’m getting a fair amount of line twist though. Enough twist that I can’t fish light weight shaky heads with that rod. Is that a sign that it’s time to change line or ?Can you comment or make a video about how to manage line twist. Thanks for all the info and real world prospective, it’s a rare thing these days.
Next time you're out, open you're bail and let line out with no lure and idle your boat letting the line untwist behind you.

Times are changing Randy I have a Kastking Zepher spooled with six pound line and have no problems. My jerkbait rod has a SLX MGL spooled with eight pound line and don't think I would have a problem droping down to six if I felt a need.

You are absolutely, 100% correct! I've always thrown them on spinning gear, ever since the days of throwing Rapalas wading ponds and streams, 40 years ago. I have a Lew's Carbon Fire 6'9" ML spinning rod I love to use but I just got a Megabass Destroyer Windbuster 7'2" spinning rod, on which I put a Shimano Vanford 2000. 10lb chartreuse Smackdown braid with 8lb Tatsu leader. I also picked up a ¼lb spool of 7lb FC Sniper for jerkin'. I'm tickled. 🪶light!
Tatsu as leader material seems like a waste of $$. You using it primarily as leader?
Maybe they use a baitcaister to give you a better chance! You might argue but results are what count, how many classics have you won! Most guys use both, different tools for different situations.
The smaller minnow classes throw well on a rod one class lighter than most anglers are too "macho" to admit.

I disagree with almost everything you said in this video lol....I can cast way further with a baitcast on 12 lbs flouro than my spinning combo on 12 lbs flouro...and what do you mean you cant use 6 lbs line on a baitcast? I can cast a baitcast with 6 lbs test all day with no issues

I understand the logic, but I just have a hard time agreeing with absolutes when it comes to fishing. You mentioned certain conditions are better for a baitcaster, but at the same time you say spinning rods are better. I'm a proponent of just use what feels right to you and you have confidence in. That is what will catch you more fish. Just my opinion.
Randy, I have a the last three tournaments me and coangler have won have all been my coangler’s handy work with jerkbaits. That’s great and all but his secret has been to smoke a hit of crack after every fish. He said it puts him in the “zone” Now he has been trying to get me do it to “up my game!” I’m Leary about it, but I wanna win. Is this a thing at higher levels of fishing? Is it considered cheating, like PED’s?
The Whipsnake comes in 2 price points. Not sure if the actions are the same or not. Also, do you know anyone that has either model in stock? Randy you can't use the 2018 orochi xx whipsnake for 110s. They're rated from 1/16 - 3/8. The 110 is 1/2oz. You're using is the older version.

Maybe you could help me out. When I throw my 110’s , the flouro gets caught on the front hook all the time. Super frustrating. Doesn’t happen with the 100 plus one though. Any ideas?

What about the deeper diving jerkbaits that are about 1/2oz

As you fish shallower do your bait choices reduce in size .an then color or brightness ,? that thrill of seeing a fish chasing then grabbing it on a short line .if that don’t put your heart in your throat ,take up golf!

a vision oneten weighs 1/2 oz and the whipsnake lure rating max out at 3/8oz. I know those weights on the rods are only guide lines, but won`t a vision oneten be too much for that rod to handle? Can anyone here please share their experiences that use this exact setup? I`m very intrested in your guys feedback. Thanks Randy and keep up the great work. Although I did not know Aaron personally, I will always remember him and how his analytical side made him a spectacular angler.
Yup, I said the same thing. If you're sticking with orochi xx ronin or shakey head should be your candidates. Randy uses the old whipsnake rated for 1/2oz

OR how about this; (If I buy the new whipsnake rod rated for 3/8oz max and I use a 1/2oz Megabass Vision 110 or a 3/4oz Megabass Oneten Max LBO Jerkbait on my new 2021 Megabass Orochi XX Whipsnake rod and it breaks my new rod? will Magabass of America Three-Year Warranty (cover my new rod and give me a new one?). So true!!! I had always used spinning until others said it wasn't best. I tried the baitcaster a few times. Then said screw the other options I am going to what works best for me and that's spinning for sure. Can't wait to see the rest of the series as it comes out.

Megabass relaunched the orochi xx in 2018. The whipsnake randy uses is the older model which is rated to 1/2. The current models are only rated to 3/8 so I definitely think the Ronin, if your going for a designated spinning jerkbait outfit is the ticket. I agree but I think he's referring to sparse vegetation or colder weather months where alot of that vegetation that would otherwise break you off has died down.
