I’ve fished jerk baits for years one lure I’ve always had confidence in and of course fished just like Randy said was not the right way so I’m definitely going to start trying your technique and on a a spinning real thanks for the great tips
The Megabasss Whipsnake is a light action that tops out at 3/8 oz lure wt but most jerkbaits including the Magabass 110 weigh 1/2 oz so my question is are you over loading the Whipsnake rod or do you use a light jerkbait? Also you linked to the Megabass Ronin which in the description is made for use with jerbaits and it can handle the 1/2 oz lure as it tops out at 3/4 oz recommended lure weight so why would you not recommend it over the Whipsnake?
If anyone isn't confident with a jerkbait; if they have crystal clear waters where they can sight shallow bass that will help fine-tune your twitch technique more than any other on the water experience you'll have. listen to randy here- then try to implement his tips where you can actually see the bass react to your manipulations of the lure. Crystal clear 10+ft. visibility lakes are my favorite for this technique.- or any time the ct. river's runnin clear up my way.
you can accomplish same on a baitcaster with a denali rod and 8lbs line. I am not saying the whip snake, is the wrong way to go, I am saying the baitcaster set up can be just as effective.
Yeah, I just graduated kindergarten. You worked with Yuki Ito on designing the 110? A rod blank doesn't know if it's supposed to be a spinning or casting rod. Builders use whichever blank they choose for either. Both are fully capable of casting, presenting and working a jerkbait.
Definitely great cadence for cold water.... You just forgot to tell everyone they have to put Suspended Strips / Suspend Dots on first . I wish someone would make a real suspending jerk bait 🙄
Can others chime in, and Randy what do recommend- regarding jerkbaits on spinning gear, is it best practice to load reel with braid and have fluorocarbon leader to tie to the jerkbait (or) to load reel with fluoro and to tie to jerkbait ? And what is best Lb test with spinning with jerkbaits in general ?
Hmmm? Gonna have to try that one. It's hard to believe that with all the success KVD has had with a jerkbait, that he's been fishing it wrong for all these years.
Hi Randy. My name is Fred aka SteelheadFred. I've committed to learning/mastering the jerkbait. This is absolutely breaking news to my world and I appreciate that. Can't wait to practice this on he water. Just letting you know that me and my circle here in Oregon are fans and supporters. Love your content (!most of it 😅)
If you have the right jerk, you don't have to do that twitch on the pause. I can teach you. This is what happens when you don't know baits or the highest level.
Can you tell fish the moment to bring back personal lane breakdowns? I bought one from Matt and loved it. Raise the price if that's the issue, I don't care. Thanks!
St Croix Triumph Series is right at $100 and if you can get it at Dick's when they have their " spend $100 get $20 off" sale, it's even less. How I got mine. I have a 6" medium 1 piece rod. Tight lines!
I see in years past you had an Orochi XX Whipsnake and now it seems you show more of the Levante... is there one you prefer over the other? What about the Windbuster, is it to fast/heavy?
Without Randy, I'd _still_ be oblivious about jerkbaits. I followed his instructions _exactly_ and landed a nice SM ... on first cast! I told him so. That Whipsnake is of typical MB quality, and feels like it ... looks good too.
It’s the knowledge and information that’s important not the entertainment. I have buddies that won’t watch a video unless someone is out on the water fishing and they barely know anything because they’re only being entertained. I promise if you’ll watch these videos and pay attention to Randy and go out and try the things he talks about and apply it your fishing I guarantee you will become a better angler but you gonna have to put time in it.
He’s already said he’s not doing on the water videos anymore for UA-cam because he’s working 3 jobs , a active family, consulting, active lifestyle and in between fishing and editing UA-cam videos I would imagine he doesn’t have the extra time to do so. Thank you for the critical information your sharing. I’m interested on buying the orochi rod but I’m 5’6 fishing off a kayak and I feel like the 6’11 rod is still too long. Do they make a shorter rod for whipsnake or are there any other options?
@@BassKing916 I’m new to jerkbait fishing and tried both spinning and casting and decided spinning is best for me! Randy I feel is correct in that spinning is the best for technique! Tactical Bassin recommended the Ronin as the only spinning rod they found to be a worthy jerkbait rod! I respect both these channels for my fishing advice and have served me well!
Hello Randy. I know you are a huge proponent of using the Megabass Whipsnake for your jerkbait fishing. As you probably are aware Megabass makes several casting rods across their different lines specifically for fishing their jerkbaits: Destroyer P5- Oneten Special, Orochi XX F4.5-611XX JERKBAIT SPECIAL, Levante F4.5-611LV JERKBAIT SPECIAL. And the Orochi XX line even has a spinning rod specifically designed to fish jerkbaits the Ronin. My question for you would be why wouldn't any of these rods be an excellent (if not preferred) choice to use for jerkbait fishing, when the leading company in jerkbait design, Megabass put all their knowledge and experience into specifically designing those models for the technique?
@@rodneychandler82 I would bet you will probably love it. I use both casting and spinning rods for jerkbait fishing. I believe there are situations that call for having both in your rod arsenal. I really like using the Whipsnake for smaller jerkbaits like the 110 Jr, and X-Nanahan. But I also like using my Shimano Expride 6'10" Medium casting rod as well. Especially when the the technique calls for a more "aggresive" retrieve. Those are just what work for me, and I'm far, far, far from being an expert on the subject.

Thanks Randy! Great info as usual. I went to the TW website and there are 5 models of the Whipsnake. Can you provide any additional details on the action and power of the rod you recommend? Also, I looked at the Ronin and it looks like it has the same actions and power but it is 3 inches shorter. I'm only 5'7" so a shorter rod may work better for me. Any thoughts on that idea? Thanks!
I bought the Levante Whipsnake. It works great. I think Randy mentioned the Levante rod in some other videos in the past. I have been using it for the last 2 years and its fantastic so far.

It’s been awesome. I cast mostly shallow Shad raps as where I am fishing these walleyes is only 3-5ft deep. Caught one that went 28.5 inches the other night. I like the idea of that...especially the really colder water in winter...I'm probably guilty of working a jerkbait too aggressively at times.. again, there are no guarantees in fishing...i recall using a jerkbait a couple years ago, using the jerk, jerk pause technique for a few hours...no interest at all...after a bad cast, i started reeling the jerkbait in fast & immediately caught a 2 lb not more than 4 quick cranks of the handle....a reaction strike maybe?
