I love this movie. We all had that one teacher who was such a great influence on the lives of so many.

When he was filming Jaws with Steven Speilberg, the movie hit a ton of delays and went massively overbudget. Dreyfus had the wherewithal to understand Spielberg's vision and creative process and he vociferously defended the director and the film... but he also very publicly badmouthed Universal Studios in interviews. As a result, Dreyfus would go on to do a few movies with Spielberg (Close Encounters, for example) but while he wasn't exactly black-balled in the film industry, I really do get the impression that trashing a major studio in his early days kept him from ever getting the roles and career accolades that he deservedly should have.

When she was still in high school, Gretchen told Mr. Holland that she wanted to be good at something. Well, she did! She became a governor! :)

This scene always brings me to tears. Because this metaphor is true of every single one of us. This is a universal truth, in what she is saying. And that is beautiful to me.

This show was such a package of emotion. From the difficulties with his son, the school programs, and the lack of funding for the arts, they all had to convince him that his life did much more than he thought it did. Many of us feel that way.

Eddie Van Halen loved this movie. His fund is dedicated to this movie. In some ways lives are changed by great people. Try to remember this as you reach the ending years of your lives that it isn't wealth and fame as much as it is inspiring others. Money can't buy you love but love of others can buy more than you'll ever know.

It seems odd (and a shame) that the Governor can come back to say good-bye to Mr. Holland, but apparently has no influence in restoring school funding for arts and music education for schools in her state.

I wondered that too. I guess it depends on how education funding is handled, as I believe it varies by state. If they have a setup where they rely on property taxes then that could’ve been an issue if the neighborhood the school is in decreased in value.

Yes and that works both ways. One of my teachers humiliated me on a daily basis, used me as an example of "stupidity" and rather than encourage me to do better or to help me overcome my learning disabilities , destroyed my self esteem. I am 66 years old now and still struggle with self esteem and self consciousness to the point of being socially backwards. Teachers can build or they can tear down. Double edged sword there.

Mister Holland brought out the best in his students.
As for the two students we're emotionally invested in who weren't there (in Lou Russ' case because he was deceased), I have fan theories:
      1. Lou Russ had already been wounded, and the Viet Cong had been advancing on the platoon's position, and that Russ had willingly stayed behind to hold the foe off long enough allow the rest of the platoon to reach a position where they could better defend themselves.
      2. Rowena had been lured into some sort of sexual exploitation soon after arriving in New York, but had escaped soon after, and at the time of this concert was busy with a shelter for those who had escaped similar plights.

Leave it to me to get teary eyed over a movie. But matching the scene earlier where she was timid, afraid, he gave her some tough love. She ends up being governor of the state. Moments like that as kids and teens are things they will remember!

@@Artificialintelligentle school budgets are drawn largely for the local tax base and financial budgets and decisions by the local school board.
Case in point, my local district growing up. They tried to cut some after school programs for at risk youth, but there was money available for even more athletic facilities. That budget got voted down.

I can relate...and I lost two brothers who would have said the same thing, yet I would give anything to see them again. They made this world better, just being here. Their interests, their humor, and their personalities are like no other. I have no doubt the same can be said about you. You were fearfully and wonderfully made. You are like no other, and I look forward to knowing you (and everyone) someday.

Rowena’s theme is one fine example. True, it was james horner(i think), but the scene where he plays and she sings along with it….i wish so much that they would have recorded a full length version of that song with her singing and his piano. Tragically, all we got was a few seconds. It still gives me goosebumps.

I don't think that's necessarily the case. He wasn't a great composer, just average, that's why he never really pursued much of it throughout his career, even before he became an educator, but especially once he dedicated himself to it fulltime. He could have, of course, composed on the side. But it was only ever just a pipe dream for him. That's why he realized he didn't need that to have been fulfilled all his life. The final performance was just the much deserved and wonderful cherry on top for the contribution he did to all those students in that community.
