As a life-long teacher I can say that this scene is well done! Probably similar to the 1st day of many of us! All the classroom/teaching scenes in this movie are brilliantly scripted and acted.
I thought the same thing. I started teaching at college in the fall. I don’t know if I could have felt any more like how Richard Dreyfus portrays this first day here.
Wouldn't Mr. Holland have already know what his schedule of what to do would be before his first day there? It seems like of weird that the principal had to tell him what his schedule was as if he didn't have it written down for him.
I thought about this scene when I first stepped in my new schools and the interaction between him and his principals, they pretty much let me have free Will and I love it! Peace!

You can SO tell he does NOT want to be there and the students are about as enthusiastic as he is!

The principal was a hard ass but she saw potential in him as is revealed later in the film.
