Dad this was our favorite movie. When I had you on the phone for the last time. I played this for you and the nurse told me that you stopped well moaning in pain. I knew you heard me. The next conversation our last conversation I told you that I loved you; you were in so much pain you said I love you too. You opened your eyes for 2 seconds. I told you that "God was calling you home. I started crying so hard; and in all of the pain you were in you mumbled :Don't Cry, I told you daddy you can let go know. And in 3 seconds you did. I want to thank you for that. It has been over 25 days. I asked you last night to please come into my dreams. You did not. But I had a packaage at the door I smelled your smell. I felt warmth. I sat on the doorway and Just talked to you. Thank you for that Dad. Thank you for being my Dad. But most of all with all of this going on you still reach out to me. You taught me everything I know.
This was the best scene in the film for me (along with the scene waiting for the bus). To me, I never saw Glenn's interest in Rowena as romantic. He let her go easily enough. It was what she represented that was so profound. Glenn dreamed of being a professional musician. Instead, he found himself anchored in a life he never asked for, in a profession he began out of necessity -- though one he came to accept in some way. Then here comes Rowena. She's beautiful; she's dreamy-eyed; she has an angelic voice and a zeal to turn it into something; she is his dream, in living flesh. She's also his last chance to pursue that dream. That is why his decision to stay with his family is so poignant. It's one thing to accept reality and let go of a dream when it's far away. When it's at your fingertips and you can taste it, that is when it takes an incredible amount of fortitude to turn away. Holland didn't stay with his wife and son because he was forced; he stayed because he CHOSE to -- for the first time, in actual fact. That's fucking powerful.
This is also why I love the wife's response when he says I love you after coming back from the bus stop, and she says "I Know." She knew he was struggling with his emotions, and knew something was up, but she never really questioned that he loved his family and would come home. It is an affirmation in her trust of him.
The look, when his wife realises who Rowena is. A wife always knows when something is different about her partner. She knew he had replaced his dream of being a famous composer for another, being a father and husband to their family. She knew that he was struggling and at a crossroads. To leave and make music or stay.. The look on her face when she listened to this song, broke my heart. She loves her husband. She knows that even if its just an emotional affair he's having, he is facing a choice. So is she...her heart is breaking.. Whew... The complexity of this scene. This was a real crossroads in the movie. .. still one of my favs..
I don't believe Ms Kelly has ever been cast as effectively as she was cast here. I think with the right management, she could have been a superstar. But, as usual, Hollywood missed it.
This is my favorite version of this song, I love how Jean Louisa Kelly feels every single syllable and her angelic, clear voice is perfect for this precious Gerschwin tune. LOVE!
@@juliuscepeda9655 I bought the CD of the soundtrack (many years ago, after watching the movie) in great part because of this song and you can't image how disappointed I was when I found out it wasn't on the CD... I'd guess probably due to copyrights and/or royalties... but still very disappointing!
A beautiful woman with a fantastic voice singing one of the Gershwin's finest. I'm a 63 year-old guy but can't watch this scene without emotion. It has everything and was brilliantly directed. Who wouldn't be flattered and, perhaps, tempted. The look on his wife's face tears my heart out. But...he's a good guy and does the right thing.
A perfect example of an artist and his muse. Mr. Holland was in love with what she embodied. She brought a necessary catalyst to his life at a crossroads, inspired him again. As many people as are bothered by the under-current between them, it was never to be. He gave her the freedom to be what she was meant to be, a chance he never really had; she was a fresh breeze that woke him up again. The intent was never to leave his wife; even if he had left, it would have been the dream he followed, not the girl. But in the end, he made the right choice.
Jean Louisa Kelly's voice and stunning charisma are a joy to watch and listen to...and her rendition of Gershwin's great song was one of the most spellbinding film performances I've ever witnessed...unfortunately the gods of the arts have denied her the opportunities and fame she so deserves...but like another great musical performer, Georgia Steel, sometimes the best and brightest get overlooked by a fickle public...
This is pretty much my favourite scene of any movie ever made, and the way I LOVE this song to be sung. She truly captures the naiivity and innocence of the song.
Mrs Holland knew ...recall the beginning of the movie when she told her husband (Mr Holland) that she had had a crush on her music teacher when she was in highschool.
He wasn't too smart to name his composition "Rowena's Theme" knowing that his wife would more than likely be coming to the concert and probably be reading the program. Seems like he pretty much gave himself away.
Jean Louisa Kelly's acting and singing are the things that "knock your socks off!!" Especially the "look" she gives Dreyfuss when they pan away after the song... Mamma Mia...
Particularly beautiful, when Rowena's voice haunts him as he looks through his family photo album. You can see his anguish and internal conflict, as he thinks of her. He clearly loves his wife, but he can't get Rowena off of his mind...
This song in and of itself packs powerful emotions and needs into it on several levels, but when it is performed like this it takes on its own life, begging the listener, no, demanding that the listener apply the implications to their own life. It's what musicians call, "transformative". Does this make sense? smiles!
Natalie it's simply one of the best songs ever written and then when it's performed in this context it's freaking overwhelming. Of course it haunts you. It would be strange if it didn't.
All the layers of the film culminate in this scene. Kudos to the photography, lighting and film directors, not to mention the performance of the two female lead actresses. A perfect scene!
This has always been, hands down, my favorite version of this song and my favorite song of all time. Too many versions rush through the beginning or have too fast of a tempo, in general. This version evokes sensuality and emotion,
Jean absolutely nails this song!!! This whole clip shows what this relationship was about. I think he loved his family too much to have up and left them but he did love what Rowena represented....a free spirit (so to speak) and what he gave up those 15 years before when he started teaching....
I remember buying the cd of this movie's soundtrack just for this song. Alas, it was not in the cd. I spent some time recording the song on tape until I got it right so that I can hear this song again and again. Miss Kelly captured just the right amount of innocence and longing in her straightforward no frill delivery.
I feel appreciative to have someone to watch over me. It is a great way to have a message from songs to find some answers to change the world and our future.
The amazing capture of emotional struggles of Dreyfuss and Headly, and the want of Kelly are astonishing performances. The emotions are gut wrenching and so deep it's painful. The feelings and memories remain for a lifetime.
Wonderful song, beautiful (in more ways than one!) singer and one of the best scenes in a fine movie. Dreyfuss and Headley give excellent performances and bring a hanky for the final scenes.

I have watched this scene many times, always with a lump in my throat. The combination of her face, voice & demeaner is irresistable. Sad to say, if you buy the soundtrack of the movie, you do NOT get Jean-Louisa's version of this classic.
Out of all the Ella Fitzgerald covers of this song, some by far more renowned singers, this may just be the best. And it added so much to the movie as well.
I extraed in this movie in several scenes, including being in the audience for this scene. It took about twelve hours of filming to shoot this scene, and I probably heard her perform this song forty times. (Each angle you see in a movie is a separate take and there are multiple takes from every angle.) Rowena's seductiveness aimed at Mr Holland was obvious even way back in the audience. And I remember when the cameraman came down and shoved the big camera lens into the face of the wife, like a foot from her face, and held it there for the entire song. I could only see the back of her head but could imagine her expression. We extras had to be there two hours early so that wardrobe could give us all period clothes. So for the extras it was a more than fourteen hour day. (Yes, they paid us, minimum wage.) We also were all given programs like the one the wife looks at to see Rowena's name. Except for the page shown on screen, the rest of the program was taken from some real school show. The programs made good fans because it was extremely hot. The high school orchestra was portrayed by the Portland Youth Philharmonic. They had a real conductor working just off camera.
Thanks for this information. Having done BG myself, I know it can be long days. And she did the song 40 times? Man, she must've gotten tired at some point. But they paid her more than you did, so she probably would give more of an effort to it. And you really needed period clothes for this? This was 1980 in this scene so I can't see needing older clothing.
I loved the movie and it really takes me back to the mid sixties when we were in high school,. and it was real easy to identify with the era and emotions going on. Don't remember girls looking as beautiful as Rowena is here. Time goes by so fast.
Never hear much about Ms. Headly's performance but really have to give it up to Glen for another great job,(see Dirty Rotten Scoundrels) for another great actress performance. also probably Dreyfus's best and the music makes this one truly enjoyable motion picture, thanks for sharing, j

Amazing analysis and very moving. I completely agree.

She knew he was struggling with his emotions, and knew something was up, but she never really questioned that he loved his family and would come home. It is an affirmation in her trust of him.
Nate Broadus right after watching the movie last night, I thought of the whole thing to be a mix of Forrest Gump and It's a Wonderful Life.
Especially since both Forrest Gump and this film have the characters living through many real events over the years.
Beautiful analogy and I completely agree. In Rowena's mind, it will be the person she would never completely forget.
To have someone singing this to you about you is divine
She sang this song as it should have been sung. Nobody has done better.
One of the most magical moments in musical memory!

Don't blame Hollywood. Jean chose to waste her time and talent in an unintelligent sitcom "Yes Dear" for several years in exchange for the paycheck.
Could not agree more. The female version of Michael Buble.......
She was better in Uncle Buck 😆
It’s not like she isn’t getting any work. She’s worked with some major industry players. I think she’s going to star in some new top gun movie.

Right. With her he could totally be able to go after his music.

No, she took a part in a brainless sitcom for the easy money. Her fault entirely.
And the wife still claps for her... Classy lady =D

JLK has absolute pitch and, when she held the note an extra tick at 2:45/2;46 to "put on some speed" was brilliant.
I will say this... I have never heard a "high school" orchestra or singer that good.....ever!
Oh I have. We had two singers in my school who became opera singers. Our orchestra was not quite that good
