First off, anyone who doesn't cry over this ending after watching the whole movie is dead inside. Second, I've always loved how they brought Gertrude back at the end and that she is the governor of the state now. The very first person he connects to as a teacher ends fulfilling their full potential because he was able to show her how to find her self confidence.
"First off, anyone who doesn't cry over this ending after watching the whole movie is dead inside." You PRESUME, Christina. SOME do not forget that this is JUST a FILM.
Every time life has me feeling dead inside I watch this movie, and my hysterical tears show me I'm not. I grew up in Portland where this was filmed, and when this happened to so many programs I thought how we were doing future generations a disservice.
This is the movie that made me want to be a teacher when I was still a Junior high student. Here I am in my 9th year as a high school English teacher and could not be happier.
You have my respect. I wanted to be a high school teacher prior to watching this movie, but it certainly added a lot of new wood to the fire. Sadly, my teaching career began and ended during my student teaching gig. I discovered very quickly I have NOWHERE near the patience necessary.
I cried the first time I saw this, for more than one reason. The music itself is stirring, and it fills your heart to see Mr. Holland so appreciated by so many when he was at his lowest. Then there's Mr. Holland's pride and joy at finally hearing his life's work performed for the first time. But even his best friend, the gym coach, had not known the depth of his friend's mind when it came to music. It brought tears to his eyes. What was especially gratifying was seeing the principal's reaction. This is the man who fought to eliminate music from the curriculum, forcing Mr. Holland into early retirement. Yet you can see the music stir his soul in his semi-confused expression, he never anticipated it having such an effect. This movie came out at a time when many schools across the US were slashing music programs due to budget cuts. Music was seen as unnecessary. Thankfully, it was a short lived trend, at least it was where I live. Without any music programs, they discovered that math scores decreased the most. (after all, music is math based) But overall scores went down as well because music added to a student's mental well being, making them better students. Like the principal, it lifted their spirits. Whether it was because music classes gave them a break from the heavier courses during the day, or whether they found their own joy in playing or singing, or if they participated in or watched the school plays and concerts. Music played an integral part in student's lives. Without it, everything else became heavy and dull.
This movie is a beautiful work of art in its own right but, when you've been in the school band from 6th grade through graduation, you truly understand the depth and feeling there is when someone is appreciated in such a way. My music teachers and a couple others were a huge part in shaping the way I see the world today and I can't thank them enough.
I had a band teacher in high school that was very similar to Mr. Holland. Super influential to me and many others. He saw the raw talent I had and brought it out. This movie was very powerful and brought attention to how important music is in our school system. Today I’m a music teacher and have been for 20 years now. Most of my knowledge was acquired by remembering how my band director conducted his classes. We are still friends and communicate often. Mr. Ron Kearns. Blessed to still have him in my life!
Very cool man. I had an awesome band teacher too and he brought out the best in me, which led to multiple drumming endorsements and success on two major record labels. If not for him and some others, my life wouldn't have been nearly as rich. May you continue to inspire your students and bring out the best in them.
This is one of the few movies siskel and ebert were in absolute complete agreement on. It didn't happen very often, but it certainly did with mr. Holland's opus they both loved the film. The film for me is more than anything about change, about moving on, about, learning things and passing them on to the future generations. Mr. Holland really is one big constant in the film, everything is changing around him, but mr. Holland to a large extent remains the same, until he loses his job. The film really is a great metaphor for life, and the good and bad changes that happen, and people who inspire us, through all the changes of life, to aspire to be all that we can.
Yeah but there are some people who don't need anyone's help as they would just tell them to go away like miserable assholes. Like they don't appreciate anyone's who genuinely trying to be kind. 🙄
When I need an uplifting cry, I watch the end of Mr Holland's Opus. It does it every time. I agree with all the comments below. How lucky I have been to have seen the film over and over. It brings hope every time I see it.

I've seen this movie several times, but it's been over 20 years since the last time I watched it. I used to own the movie but lost it over the years. I love this show so much! As a former instrumentalist, it hits a personal note with me (no pun intended) as I'm sure it does with many past and current musicians. The world is built around music, after all. I don't know how anyone couldn't love and appreciate this story. I can't believe the emotions I still feel watching this scene again after all these years. I'm so glad this clip was posted. Thanks for sharing!
The saddest part of the movie is how he's able to connect with so many children... except his own. The most heartwarming part is when they finally DO connect. While I DO understand how difficult it might be in their circumstances, he could have tried. Even a little bit.
For me my Mr. Holland was Jackie Gilley Monroney Jr. High School Band Late 1990s (during the time this movie came out) I am a lover of music and a better person because of her

Not ayear went by when we went Two competitions and one overall best and beat out other schools orchestras with the highest of marks and judging.

Jean Louisa Kelly has worked consistently since the late 80s - not always blockbuster movies - sometimes even commercials - but she is not a household name, even though it should be.
I thought this movie would shoot her into superstardom, but it didn't happen. She's had a nice career, but IMO it should have been more. Maybe she's touched a lot of lives like Mr. Holland did.
The fact they didn't orchestrate the entire song is infuriating. That song has so many movements and is like five or six minutes longer. It's so good. For a movie I get it but come on...start it from the top and end it at the end.

Easily one of the greatest endings to ANY movie ever made!!
I would challenge that the end of “August Rush” is comparable.

To be honest, the PE teacher in this movie is a legend in his own right, and easily deserves a movie on him, too.
It doesn't get much better than this. What a freaking great movie.
It certainly is!
Richard Dreyfus once said of "It's a Wonderful Life", "God, I hope to make a movie that great someday". Well, in a sense he did here.
