So you just want to shoot the little button bucks with the recurve and save the big bucks for the compound? LOL. Go ahead and shoot a big buck with the recurve. It's ok to do that. Then you will absolutely know what a thrill feels like. I've been instinctively shooting my Bear Kodiak Magnum bow for 50 years which I bought when I was 16 years old. You can see it on my channel if you like and watch a little practice shooting. There's nothing else like traditional archery for the ultimate deer hunting challenge.
Congratulations on a successful kill. That shot wasn't immediately fatal but if get good penetration from a broadhead, just have confidence and wait it out like you did. The arrow will do its job. It takes about 3 pints of blood loss before a deer will go down from lack of blood to the brain. It can take a few minutes for that much blood to bleed out when you have a shot far back like that. That deer was mostly bleeding internally.
Now that you have knocked the new off that recurve, take all the sights, release aids, etc. off that bow and learn how to shoot it like it is supposed to be shot. I shoot with nothing but a bare string and the bow itself. Totally instinctive shooting. As you can see in my videos, I don't even use an arm guard. Once you develop proper form and get the techniques ingrained in your muscle memory, you will do just fine and won't need any of those crutches you are using.
Best of all, once you learn instinctive shooting, you don't really aim at all. You just focus your eyes on the spot you want to hit and let your training take over. Your mind will make the calculations for you and you will be surprised at how well you shoot. People think it is hard, and it does take practice, but it is just like making a shot in basketball. Nobody uses a sight pin to aim at the basket. They just shoot. Or like hitting a baseball. No one aims at the ball. They just swing the bat.
You won't hit every shot perfectly. And you will miss some just like in baseball and basketball. But that's just part of the hunt. Generally, recurves are so quiet many times when I have missed, I just sit still, knock another arrow, and wait. Often the deer will come right back to see what it was that flew by them.

I appreciate your advise, but please know you come of very confrontational in the way you word your sentences. It almost seems like you are laughing at me from your first sentence. (And no I'm not "saving the big buck for the compound." If one would have presented a 20 yard shot, I would have absolutely taken it. However, if one comes within 40 yards I will still take it with the compound.) If you are truly trying to help, I would consider trying to rewording some things. As you probably already know, tone can be very difficult to interpret in a youtube comment. I have seen some of your comments on other channels that have gotten heated and think they could have been avoided. But if you are just trying to stir the pot I really don't feel like engaging you in that.
I got helpful hints with the Martin recurve. I got one myself. I've learnt how to shoot off the shelf with vanes. YES VANES! Incredibly accurate also.

No Sir, I am not at all trying to stir the pot nor troll your channel. First, I have been a subscriber of your channel for a long time and enjoy your videos. Second, I watch your videos often and if I have commented before, I can't remember it. The only reason I commented here on this video was because I am a huge fan of bow hunting in general and particularly with using primitive archery equipment such as traditional bows, self bows, and recurve bows. Please consider my comment from that point of view, ie as a long time fan of your channel, as it was intended to sincerely celebrate your accomplishment and encourage you to keep improving with the recurve.
I truly meant no negative connotations toward you at all. My only "joke" was poking a bit at you about putting your recurve aside in favor of the compound if a big boy came along. I don't even own a compound, but if I had a rifle in the stand and a big buck stepped out at a distance I think I could shoot him properly I'd put down the rifle and pick up my recurve for the shot. The thrill of killing a big buck that was within reasonable range with a recurve would be so great you could hear me shout out for miles away! Anyone can shoot a big buck 20 or 25 yards away with a rifle. Little kids do it all the time during youth hunts. But hardly anyone can bring one down with a recurve. That was what I was trying to say.
I wasn't meaning anything negative but just pointing out that using sight pins and release aids is, as you said yourself in the video, just a way to take small steps toward learning to master the recurve bow. Rather than trying to laugh at or make fun of you, I was trying to encourage you to take them off the bow and shoot some with it this summer before season opens without these aids. I think you might be surprised at your ability to hit without these things better than you think. All of that was just a suggestion from one bow hunter to another, not an effort to belittle you in any way.
I'm genuinely sorry if the tone of my email seemed offensive. As you correctly say, its hard to convey thoughts over the internet in the same manner you intend to or as you would if you were face to face. I have a feeling if we were face to face and I said the exact same words I wrote, you wouldn't take them in the same way because you could see my facial expressions, hear the actual tone in my voice, and see my body language. You can't do that just by reading my words.
So I do greatly appreciate you taking the time to write and let me know how my post came across to you. It's far, far better for me to learn from you how to be more careful about how I word things that are not intended to ridicule or offend than it is for you to harbor a grudge about a post.

Thanks. I'll get there eventually. My long term goal is to make my own recurve and kill a deer with it. I've been researching how to form and bend the limbs and it's gonna be a long process but pretty sure I can do it.

Hey, I understand that you have to eat and that means the kill. I am not commenting on killing but your method. You hit him in the organs and he died in agony for 5 to 10 minutes, my suggestion is, maybe finishing the kill humanely with a rifle? Ask yourself would you want to struggle in agony for a large period of time??? You call yourself Noble. Food for thought. I am not a veggie eating, hippie, I have killed things, I am saying, think about your methods?
I appreciate the respect in the way you worded you're comment. That is hard to find on anonymous UA-cam comments anymore. I absolutely see your point. I was not happy with the placement of my shot, the only thing I am grateful for is that it was a kill shot. I did not have a gun with me because that is illegal during archery season. I possibly could have taken a follow up shot, but that would have required me to get down out of the stand, and walk over to the deer, potentially spooking him and having him run off. As an experienced hunter, I know this is not smart nor ethical to do in this particular situation. I knew my shot was not great. Possibly knicked the liver and definitely came through the guts. This is a lethal shot. However, if you ask any hunter they would say back out for a few hours (if not over night) let the animal die and go track it later. The alternative could end up with you killing a deer and not retrieving it because you can bump the animal while it's lieing down in the location you would have found it just to have to track it again with the less blood trail due to clotting. Let me tell you, this has happened to me and it is far worse. So, everything I did after the shot I do not regret and would not change. Before the shot is a different story. I admit I am not an expert. As I said, this was my very first time harvesting an animal with a recurve bow. There is a lot of improvement to be made and this hunt helped me pinpoint some aspects I can work on. But just because I am not perfect does that mean I am not ethical or humane? Because I am not perfect does that mean I shouldn't try and I should quit this traditional method of hunting? I hope you don't believe that, but if you do, you have a poor grasp on reality.
Noble Savage Outdoors I didn’t know there was an archery only hunting season? Interesting. I am from Australia and for the vast majority don’t have to kill the animals for food, I don’t have an issue with it at all, as stated. @@3vo408 That is a good point I forgot to mention. These are brand new, extremely sharp broad heads. If you've ever cut yourself with a very sharp knife you know it actually doesn't hurt and bleeds a ton. The goal is the have the animal bleed out before soreness/pain start to set in.
Don't care about you taking a button but I do about the shot you took. That was a no-no. If you're going to continue to trad hunt, you need to watch some shot placement videos. There was no need for that animal to suffer like that. I trad hunt and would never have even considered that shot.
You are correct the shot placement was terrible. I admit that, and I know I can do better with practice. However, I disagree the shot was a "no-no". I've been hunting with a compound for years and know good shot placement. I'd take that same shot every time it presents itself. The problem had nothing to do with my aiming point and had everything to do with my nerves, anchor point, release, and overall traditional archery techinque. This was my first time harvesting a deer with my recurve. As everyone who hunt traditional knows it is a completely different ball game than compound and presents a ton of different challenges. All of these things, I can and will improve on, but as hunters we need to be careful how we critize beginners. I see too often veteran hunters holding beginners to their own standards which is not realistic nor productive to growing (or at the very least maintaining) hunting as a hobby/sport.
@@NobleSavageOutdoors Was going to agree to disagree but went back and freeze-framed the moment of the shot. That deer's head and one ear completely covered its vitals based on its position in relation to yours. Poor choice and I'll leave it at that.
@@davemorris4241 I understand why you might think the head and ear were in the way, but I would like to remind you that the camera angle does not accurately reflect my perspective at the time of the shot. This is not me making excuses, it is simply physics. At 5 yards away, a yard left or right (which is where the camera was mounted) will drastically affect the perceived angle. I appreciate your interest in hunting and the importance of ethical shot placement, but please keep in mind that a video does not always capture the full context of a situation. As a fellow traditional hunter, I am constantly working to improve my skills and technique, and I take responsibility for any mistakes I make. I would appreciate constructive criticism rather than uninformed opinions. Especially after I have already pointed out the real reason for error, and accepted it was my fault.
