  • Jeff and I drew our first ever elk tags in Wyoming. In a matter of months, we gather up all the gear we needed, learned as much as we could about elk behavior and hunting tactics, e-scouted all over WY public land, and practiced extensively with our calls and bows. All the preparation for our DIY backcountry public land archery hunt was worth it because we were able to bring home truck load of meat and 2 nice sets of antlers.

    When you can’t hold your bow back any longer doesn’t mean you just let an arrow fly. I’m glad you recovered the last bull but that was a terrible shot option. The only good shot bow hunting is to execute a good shot option, not settle for a less than perfect shot. When you don’t have the right shot you pass and wait for the right opportunity. Hope you understand how lucky you got and make a better judgment shot next time. The Elk deserve better.

      If you dont recover the animal, you dont notch the tag. The fish and game department accounts for wound loss in their tag allocation numbers and if the population couldn’t sustain it, then they would issue less tags. Party on boys.

    Man you knew you spined that bull when you said you shot and it dropped and your watching and filming it while doing a monologue? Have a little respect for your quarry and go put it out of its misery, instead of letting it suffer while you give a play by play of what just happened. That last bull had an absolute terrible shot on it that luckily caught the femoral or something but if it was an inch right it probably would have wounded it in the hip or gut. There was no shot there besides a frontal and if you weren’t comfortable with it don’t take it. He wounded a bull before that so it could have possibly been two bulls that you wouldn’t have found.

    • @NobleSavageOutdoors
      @NobleSavageOutdoors  2 роки тому +2

      I actually do have a ton of respect for all the animals I hunt. If you watched our conversation, you can clearly see we were not positive if he could move or not. After doing the play by play and watching him from a distance for a little while, I was convinced he couldn't move but you can still hear the hesitation in my hunting partner. In the moment, I still believe we made the right call. I can see how it may not look like that from the video, but part of that is likely due to editing. I edited out a lot of us watching and talking about what to do next, because it's not entertaining to watch.
      Hunting isn't perfect. There is the possibility of wounding animals. If you can't handle that you should not be hunting. The first bull was a perfect setup, a good shot, and ended up with missing injured bull. The second was not a great shot opportunity, but incredible shot placement and ended with a dead elk.

    • @tylermitchell3361
      @tylermitchell3361 2 роки тому +4

      @@NobleSavageOutdoors You shot a bull with an arrow and saw that it dropped. The only way that happens is with a spinal shot. Walk up and put a finishing shot in it to end it’s suffering, why would it matter if it could move or not? There is always the possibility of wounding something but when you take marginal shots the chances of that happening go up extremely. If the shot isn’t there don’t shoot, it’s simple. The shot placement was only good because it luckily hit the femoral. Nobody should intentionally try a shot like that with an animal that is that extremely quartered too where it is almost face on. If he didn’t feel confident with a frontal shot he should have put down. The fact that your debating between the shot he took and a frontal shot shows a lack of care. That’s like saying “ I could have shot him broadside through the lungs or back in the liver, it’s a tough call to make in the moment but I think I chose the right one”. Both result in a dead bull but the likelihood of not finding one is far greater than the other.

    • @wesleybrians9166
      @wesleybrians9166 2 роки тому +1

      I agree with you on them not immediately putting another arrow in that spine shot bull that was flopping around and watching it kicking before putting another arrow in it to give it as quick of a death as possible and instead doing an interview in front of the camera. It's known within seconds after the shot if that animal is struggling to try and get away. Take care of the animals first out of respect. if there's ever any questions you should just get closer, as they did, and put another arrow in it, it will only make it quicker for the animals and obviously you filled your tag so the extra arrows in your quiver can be helping to make it a quicker death.

    Here’s my issue, I normally don’t say anything. You’re starting your own station or site and publicizing the events and actions of you.
    If you are posting these then you fall subject to criticism don’t take it totally negative just to build up.
    You need to be looking at taking better shots and quit putting yourself in risk of questionable shots. The hunting industry is always under attack by those who know nothing about conservation and are prone to emotional reactions rather than rational thought. Sometimes if you want to post it you need to also accept the responsibility to represent all of us with the highest ethical decisions. Let it walk when I’m doubt. The first shoulder loss was jitters it looks like the more experienced you become those shots should be minimized. Good luck and God Bless

    • @NobleSavageOutdoors
      @NobleSavageOutdoors  2 роки тому

      I completely respect your approach to a discussion instead of a lecture like some. On my first shot, I was going off information I've heard over and over again. Elk don't jump the string like whitetail so you can take 50 or even 60 yard shots with a bow. I've heard this countless times even from professionals. Unfortunately, I had to learn from experience that this was not true. At 53 yards, this bull drop and turned probably 8 inches. I know this because the location the arrow struck was not even in my sight picture when I shot. I learned that when an elk is on high alert, it will jump the string almost just as much as a whitetail. This was a learning experience, and I will take it with me knowing I was lucky to spine it. The second shot, was a 30 yard perfectly broadside shot, I would not call it jitters, again the bull jumped the string. If you pause the video you can see the bull drops 2-3 inches causing the arrow to hit the shoulder. Anyone in there right mind would have taken that shot and anyone could have the same outcome. The last shot in hind sight probably could have been a frontal shot. However so many people have pointed out that was the only option here. I completely disagree. A frontal shot only gives you about 3-4 inches of lethal target to miss both collar bones. If they are not perfectly straight, it is much less because the vitals don't line up. His behind the shoulder shot could arguably have the same kill zone size for that angle. The fact that aiming behind the shoulder is practiced prbably 100x more often than a frontal, ups the perctage of the behind the shoulder shot even more. In the end, the perfect broadside shot ended with a wounded missing elk and the questionable quartering shot ended with a dead elk in 70 yards. This is a perfect example that it is impossible to know the actual risk of any shot. Hunting is not perfect and if you wait for everything to be perfect you will never take a shot. I take all of the experiences in and use them to get better. I am continually developing what I believe to be ethical for hunting. However that does not mean I have to accept any responsibility to represent what you decide is ethical. If it becomes law sure I must follow it, but your opinions of what you believe to be ethical are not my responsibility. Thanks for the civil discourse, hard to find on here, take care.

      @@NobleSavageOutdoors just bringing up one point, that it was said you’ll never be able to take a shot if you wait for a perfect shot. I promise you the shot will be there. I’m just recommending to not get in a hurry over taking a frontal or strong angle towards you and then publish it. As you do these things it’ll just give others the idea to do the same especially others with low education in hunting elk. The rate at loss is high although you did find yours and usually there is a low blood loss in these instances.
      Just remember a few keys while hunting elk
      1- find where they tend to water in the night ( hunt above the grazing and water areas in the morning)
      2- find where they bed and try to understand the times and thermals, especially watch out for ridges as they are prone to swirling wind,
      3-elk play the wind and do not get caught with the wind. Have your caller up wind as they normally will work Down wind to find who or what they trying to find. Elk understand there is more than elk making elk sounds
      In Utah they did a study, that in some limited entry units (so not a general unit that would not have full pressure) elk on the first day of the hunt and will start on the eve of that hunt transfer to private properties to not be hunted. This was not a few head. They figured only 30% of the elk were left once the hunt began.
      Find where elk are using water in the day and just be patient be careful on leaving sent.
      Once again the shot will be there just give it time, yes you might eat a tag once in a while but to me the loss of a wounded animal and risk it’s just not worth it.
      One other, work on the reed calls in the use of cow sounds. Record yourself and imitate some of the sounds. Notice the sounds will change up due to the elk activity and estrus. It’s a fun world out there and enjoy.
      God Bless

      Just so you know, the reason I said you will never take a shot if you are waiting for a perfect one is because I believe a truly perfect shot does not exist. There are just too many variables at play all the time when hunting. Thats what makes it so enjoyable but also frustrating at times. I absolutely understand and agree we need to reduce risk and try to up our percentage where ever possible. Thank you for the advice, always looking to learn and improve.

      @@NobleSavageOutdoors thanks for the conversation. Archery elk is definitely my favorite especially since my wife and I hunt together. The shots are there for you. One I have learned is that an elk walking has an issue, they have a tendency to react quick to any shot. They have the ability to duck and change direction or to dash quickly out. The elk are a very inquisitive animal and usually if you can keep the wind you have a good chance. Another hint for you is to think like the elk. If you were called in by another group of elk but when you get there, nothing is there or it is absolutely silent. Try using other sounds like rolling pebbles or rocks, pick leaves off branches just like they would rip them off. If you get callers allow them to keep some distance like I mentioned.
      Just for the discussion yes I have killed elk and the closest was about 1.5” with archery tackle. I believe 5-8 within 5-10 yds. It’s simply a rush otherwise you and I would not be hooked and addicted. The learning experience you receive in the next couple season will be unmatched enjoy.

      @@NobleSavageOutdoors I had an elk completely “duck” the arrow on a 43yd shot that would have hit below midpoint if it had not moved. When they drop to spring away, it can be 20+ inches. The short answer to the second shot is a heavier, weight forward arrow with an incredibly sharp broad head. Look a little more into that frontal shot. It’s not as small as you might think. Inside the shoulder blade above the brisket is extremely lethal.

    The fact that people actually thought this was a good video is insane! 3 piss poor shots on an animal and no one notices? First shot wasn’t even ranged “I thought it was about 50 yards they said”. The shot eas through a tiny opening and probably got deflected. Then they stood around doing play by play when the elk was laying there paralyzed suffering! JUST SICKENING! Show some hunting ethics and finish the bull instantly!!
    Second shot they didn’t know the range. “20 or 30 yards” well there’s a difference between 20 yards and 30 yards. The shot eas high and too far forward. Probably a dead elk even though they didn’t find it. That should’ve been the end of the hunt. And you looked for a total of 5 hours for it??? That’s just PISS POOR HUNTING ETHICS!!! You can’t cover the 2 miles you say you covered looking for that bull in 5 hours.
    Third shot was lucky to recover the bull. At 20 yards a frontal shot is your best option. If you would’ve done your homework prior to your first elk hunt you would know that!!
    There’s several UA-cam vidoes that go into great detail on frontal shots on elk and how to make them. Just because you say you can’t hold your bow back anymore is no reason to take a marginal shot on any animal.
    UA-cam is ruining hubting cuz clowns 🤡 like them are making people think it’s ok to take piss poor shots and wound animals. Then they say “that’s part of hunting” NO ITS part of being an unethical hunter!!!

    You had your chance with the first bull and took a questionable shot, a wounded animal with no recovery is a burnt tag, stop hunting. In some states it is illegal to do what you did. I am of the mindset that if you wound and animal and don't recover it, you are done hunting.

    No doubt you killed the bull. Don’t ever expect blood. New hunters, know your anatomy “before” you shoot. Elk are tough animals beyond belief! They deserve your utmost respect, accordingly make the “sure shot”. Save your shot till you’re confident of a kill…or pass. When you draw blood, punch your tag. It’ll make you more likely to take the sure shot and not the iffy one! (Glad you guys got yours!)

    • @NobleSavageOutdoors
      @NobleSavageOutdoors  2 роки тому

      I like this advice on a normal basis (like in your home state), but it is much tougher when you can only get a tag every 5 years, spend thousands of dollars on the trip, and plan for months in advance just to punch your tag at the sight of blood. Also the bull we lost was what I would consider a "sure shot" stopped broadside at 30 yards with its attention elsewhere. I wouldn't expect nor advise anyone to hesitate on taking that shot whether they lost one in the past or not. Sometimes everything works out in your favor and sometimes everything is against you, but you can always learn, get better, and increase your odds. That's what makes hunting so frustrating yet addicting at the same time.

      @@NobleSavageOutdoors - Respectfully, I disagree. In state or not, I’m inclined to encourage anyone who takes a shot to make it feel like it’s your one and only! You’re far more likely to hold out. I pay non-resident fees. I live year around for the hunt. I’m ok with the “close encounters”, (nothing like the pounding Adrenalin of getting close!) I’ll take more of those encounters any day and go home empty handed, then risk sending an arrow, hoping to hit something lethal. To each their own. Good luck in 22!

      @@NobleSavageOutdoors what kind of logic is that? Just because you finally get drawn for a tag after 5 years you can throw ethics out the window? Punch the tag when blood is drawn, whether animal is found or not. This type of content gives non hunters fuel to try to ban hunting for all.

      The same logic can be applied if say you shoot an elk with gangrene or inedible disease, you are able to turn it in and get a new tag. Even though you drew blood and your ethical rule states you should be done hunting for the season, you still allow a loophole for this situation. Another example may be if you were legitimately starving you may throw all your ethical rules out the window and may even break the law to feed yourself or family. I am not saying these situations are anywhere close to mine, but you ask what kind of logic it is and I'm trying to explain how it is situation based. The problem with ethics is that it's not agreed upon by the people. Everyone has their opinion and they feel they can shame others for not following it regardless of the situation or knowing the full situation. It's very similar to political correctness there is no law stating what is or what isn't politically correct, but enough people (even though probably not the majority) have shamed others for their opinions that collectively free speech is being effected. Essentially its whoever yells most and loudest gets to decided things. It's a dangerous path to go down. The answer is to have your own ethics for yourself but don't shame people into following your ethics. If you believe in your ethics enough, advocate for laws to be changed. If the majority agrees, make it law.
