Weather/Freeze Proof Trap Bedding (Modified Pipe Dream)

  • This is my variation of the Mark Zagger "Pipe Dream" bedding method. In the past, I have struggled keeping my canine traps firing in all weather conditions. This year, I have already seen success with this method in rain, snow, freeze, thaw conditions on a number of animals all the way down to small possums. This red fox broke a rut that I was in, on a trap that had not been touched in 10 days, but still worked perfectly with a deep pad catch.

    True, Reds do seem to like denning under a building. Last one I caught was under a guys shed.🤣😂🤣

      Not too far from me. Good luck it definitely has helped keep my traps working in the freeze thaw cycle we get.

    Becafule with this set, it’s not all that cracked up to be. I have several cost me coyotes.

      What do you think specifically cost you the coyotes?

      My jaw froze to the ground. Soo just stick to my was dirt

      I could see how that could happen. I will have to keep a close eye on them when the ground starts to freeze. Might be able to simply bed it with some antifreeze where the jaws are touching the ground. Still it has out performed just about all the other methods I've used so far. We haven't gotten a deep ground freeze yet so I will be watching closely during that. Thanks for the heads up.

      Anytime I tried calcium chloride under jaws after that but I much rather just use my was dirt

    do you just used mowed grass from your lawn or hay and dry it in the sun?

    • @NobleSavageOutdoors
      @NobleSavageOutdoors  4 роки тому +1

      Normally I take scissors with me and use any dead standing dry grass I find. Don't use grass clippings from your lawn they clump together and don't dry out properly. Taking hay amd scissors with you would be best.

    Looks like you need to adjust pan height down a little

      I think what you are talking about is in the beginning when I am explaining the wax paper. I don't have the pan night-latched yet. Its safer/easier to leave it up high when setting everything up so you don't have to worry about setting it off by accident.

    How much space is under the trap?

  • @redfox951

    Sorry, but this is not freeze proof. That dirt under both jaws will freeze solid to the soil underneath once the it becomes damp

      Where I'm at in PA, we get a ton of lake effect precipitation and freeze and thaw cycles. To be honest, I don't think there is an actual freeze proof set out there if you get enough rain then freezing conditions, nothing can withstand it. I have found that this method of bedding works the best so far in my location because there is far less dirt in contact with the jaws. The trap can bust around the small amount of dirt but is still properly bedded and will not shift under the animals weight.
