One of the best videos about our sport and how the supply chain works that I’ve ever watched. Great job on this one.

Awesome video! It is apparent that Dr. Whiting loves what he does and takes great care of his birds. As fly tier I am eternally grateful for all that he does!

Given the sheer amount of products Whiting offers, I always assumed it was a huge operation. But that drone shot at the end is absolutely staggering. Good work, Whiting folks and Fly Fish Food!

Guys, this video is spectacular! I want one of everything I see to tie flies- and I really do want that, but I’m mostly amazed to witness the process of excellence and genius. The amount of education, research, hard work, investment capital. and sheer passion to produce these fine products is truly amazing. For those of us north of 50, it wasn’t that long ago where the most expensive grade #1 Hoffman necks were truly crap by today’s Whiting standards- I still have a half dozen of those necks. Anyways, great job bringing this to us first person. The looks on your faces show how much you are amazed too and that is really cool!

The level of detail, technology and knowledge in the Whiting Farms business line is truly amazing. I will only use this suppliers products having watched this video twice; real education here, best in class. Thanks so much for taking the time and producing this video, it is great to see you guys really understand and help continuously raise the bar of our sport (way of life).

Important to me . . . capes and saddles responsibly raised and harvested. Read the “Feather Thief”, then researched commercial chicken breeding and was mortified. I feel much better about the Whiting capes and saddles on my tying desk. Thanks for this.

I must be a wimp. It makes me sad that the birds have to be killed. Are the bodies used for feed for animals or what? Hopefully, they don't just end up in the garbage.

Thanks for posting. Mind boggling process. I thought raising chickens would be hard work, but this is way more sophisticated than I expected.
Imagine spending your day sexing chicks. At work, we got a job applicant whose only work experience was in a lab sexing lobsters.

Well, that was interesting, to say the least, a lot of handwork goes into a hackle that I wind on to a hook! Oh, and the price one pays is not all that out of line considering what goes into the product in the first place. All I can say is thank you very much for the work that is being done so I can have my carefree days casting flies, I tied to the trout I love just so much.

The trimmings "Chewy" was doing, do they go into the Variety packs? What happens to the roosters that don't make it to breeder heaven? It's a facinating science done by a man that cares alot about he does. Hopefully there's an apprentice that will continue his work. Well done guys! 👍

Thank you guys so much for putting this vid out! Definitely a great look into the best hackle company and very eye opening for an amateur chicken wrangler/rancher like myself. I know I will never get to the point Whiting is at, but a great look at how the pro's do it, versus my amateur attempts at getting hackle I raise in my own flock. Cheers to you guys, and keep the great content up!

  • @stephenland9361

No, ontogeny does not recapitulate phylogeny.
"Ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny." It's a catchy phrase first proposed by Ernst Haeckel back in the 1860's. The work that led to this idea actually goes back to the 1820's from work by Étienne Serres who advanced on the work of Johann Friedrich Meckel (Meckel-Serres law) .
However, it's not true. A better phrase would be, "Ontogeny sometimes appears to recapitulate phylogeny." While the appearance of an embryo in various stages during embryogenesis often superficially resembles adult stages of the organism's evolutionary ancestors, genuine embryogenesis is very much more complicated and nuanced. This was well recognized by the mid 1950's as more and more detailed studies were done in evolutionary developmental biology.
Today, Haeckel's phrase is relegated to the trash bin of biological history, or if you prefer, biological mythology.

Absolutely an amazing operation! As the proud owner of at least a couple dozen of their necks and saddles I'm blown away by the science that goes into producing these incredible birds!
When they sort the male and female one day old chicks, what happens to the female birds that aren't kept for hen hackles or breed stock, are they just discarded? Seems like such a waste if they just throw them out with the trash. And what does happen with all the meat after the birds have been killed, are they going to soup companies or what? I totally agree these birds have a very pampered life but I hope nothing goes to waste. As a hunter and fisherman I'm definitely not an animal rights extremist, but I'd hate to think they're wasting these birds that don't make the grade or the meat byproduct that remain after removing the skins and feathers. Just sayin!

Whiting price fixes by selling too dealers only. Who does whiting, self the best feathers. Dealers raise prices to everyday anglers. Who gets the best feathers we can’t drive or fly too your store. How can we be assured we can get the best feathers for us average fly Tyler’s. I want the best Coc de Leon rooster cape color medium Pardo. You currently are out of stock. Can you put me at the top of the list.

I'm gonna go get a job there and drop a few eggs in my pocket. JK. Seriously what they produce is incredible. I just wish someone else would start a farm and create some competition in the marketplace. I don't think it will ever happen though. Too many years of investment and absolute expertise to do what whiting has done.
