By now I unfortunately no longer care how amazing a CMON game might be, because I can no longer make myself support their basic company strategy: "Either pay us one year in advance via Kickstarter while bypassing your favorite local game store OR only get half of the game at retail, because the other half consists of Kickstarter Exclusives."
meh not everyone has a local shop, and at the price at retail you are still getting a great game with a lot of awesome minis. If you feel it isn't worth it you don't buy it, but the KS "exclusives" are for us who support it that way, and are deserved.
I think because there were some great mins that were only avalible through kickstarter, ive only stumbled on the game (old time decent fan) and it is frustrating not to be able to get the exclusives now
I was saddened to see that his two cons were "storage woes and sculpt similarities. I was so psyched for this game. I wanted to love it. But the game play was stagnant and lame. You had so many skills and bonuses by the end you'd lose count of your bonuses. And the monsters were just paper this by the end. They could do nothing to stop you at all. Minion waves were not even speed bumps by mid game. No reason to go back to playing it. There was no joy or any real decision making. I expected better out of the dice tower reviews.
My wife and I have been playing the tar out of Massive Darkness and watching this review just makes me want to go play it even more!! I wasn't a fan of Zombiecide, either standard or BP, since I don't care for zombies but when I heard about Massive Darkness I jumped on the kickstarter and the only downside I've had is not backing all of it!
So, when is the comparison coming between this and Sword & Sorcery? I am really interested in your opinion about how these two stack up against each other.
Sam, love your videos. Two questions. In your opinion what's best Dungeon Saga, Massive Darkness, Sword and Sorcery or Shadows of Brimstone? Also what is your opinion of the Dungeon & Dragons Dungeon Crawlers like Ravenloaft and Temple of Elemental Evil? I know Tom loves them but I feel this is more your realm. Thanks brother.
My list goes that I've played from favorite to least: Massive Darkness Dungeons and Dragons Adventure Games Descent 2nd Edition Sword & Sorcery (Couldn't even get through the first scenario, too many rules/tokens/game management)
Since CMON has teamed up with Dice Tower before, I want a Hero Pack called Throat Punchers vs. Cthulhu. The three Heroes would be Tom, Sam, & Zee the Monster would be Cthulhu as he's public domain now & the Class would be labeled Throat Punchers ;)
I just picked up sword and sorcery. This looks like a great game but I'm not sure it has the depth and character development that sword & sorcery is going to have. How many of these table top rpgs can I buy???!!??
I tried Sword & Sorcery and found it too much game management/tokens/rules for what I was hoping for. Massive Darkness on the other hand gives me a Decentish Crawl in an afternoon with very easy game management.
Rule clarification. The goblin agent should have actually had access to the weapon, because even though they don't have the weapon type on their stat, he can use it because it's a weapon. If it was a consumable potion, than no, he cannot use it.
Wrong. Page 24 of the rulebook: "Guardians can use Combat Equipment: the Equipment’s Combat dice are added to any Combat category (Melee, Ranged, Magic, or Defense) the Guardian already has dice in. In other words, Guardians cannot use Combat dice displayed in Combat categories they don’t already have."
Thank you Sam for your review. I agree with the + and the -. I think this game is fantastic. Specially for me who don't have a lot of time to play. With the companion app, you can save a LOT of time and space. I also have descent, didn't play it enough because it took me too long to set up, etc. Anyway, I am happy I didn't got by kickstarter, and by the way, how do you do to be alerted when some similar games go on kick starter?
Polis Christodoulou Massive Darkness gives me a Decentish Crawl in an afternoon. It's also does better co-op then the Road to Legend app. Also no frustration with wonky rules like Valyndra's Lair for Descent (No reinforcements for the Overlord in the final mission!?!)
We found the rulebook annoying to go through when we needed to clarify roles while playing. A lot of common stuff not in the glossery. There's also the major drawback that while the characters level quickly, the game doesn't scale adequately with player progress. Our group found that we'd do from being useless to being unstoppable very quickly, often in a single turn, and you'd never go back to the challenge of early quest play. It unfortunately feels like a game that requires house ruling if you want to maintain a sense of challenge beyond level 2. We never had to consider house ruling zombicide, but this game just gives you too much too quickly and the game itself doesn't ramp up the difficulty to make up for it. This may be a result of them wanting to add in the campaign mode, but honestly, they have additional rules for that mode, so they should have given the same consideration to the single session adventurers.
My Main Problem is, that the mobminitures are useless. They numbers of the mob are just for the lifepoints, no extra dmg no extra ability or something else, so a lifecounter would do the same. But this mechanic is like the mechanic with the roaming monster.
I was really disappointed with this one. I was hoping they'd step up a level from zombicide, but they made it even more simple... kinda run of the mill
Passed on this on kickstarter because it looks like a copy of Black Plague with a few new mechanics. I would love to see these two games compared when you do a comparison video. Thanks!
I've agreed with many of your ratings Sam, but not this one. This game has abysmal story, close to zero challenge and very linear gameplay. Despite me enjoying very ameritrashy games, this was absolutely not one of them.
Because a 10 is the perfect game. He may not have found anything mechanically bad with the game but that doesn't mean he felt it was perfect. He did find a few faults with it after all.
just read the description for the ratings on BGG and you will see exactly why, difference between 8 and 10 is not really objective things but how much its really for you
It's interesting how Descent (& Doom) and D&D board games get a lot of crap (cuz they're old?) from people who play the newer dungeon crawlers .... but I always have to laugh when I see the "new" combat systems of these Kickstarter games. Without descent (and the D&D series) games like massive darkness wouldn't even exist. There's nothing innovative here at all.
So, as far as I know this game has an average of just about 0.62 things to think about during your turn. In other words, you are just going through the motions. This makes it the best non-game out there. Congrats?
You know what is a huge outrage with this game? The character skill tree sheets. I HATE the fact you run out of them. We were sorta promised versions you could draw on with markers, and wipe out. So they would last forever as long as you got new pens. But this is bullshit. We have to solve it ourselves, inconvenient and lame. BAD!
Meh. Looks like every other dungeon crawl out there. I was expecting something new. Nothing really stood out as nice looking. Way too many stacks of cards in this demonstration. I don't like those Light Bright boards that you use with the player card. Those things are ugly.
Just played MD phew nights ago. When in hear in reviews talking about replayability there is one point that got me wondering .I get that making different combinations among team characters, their classes and the randomness of some enemies appearance or even the randomness among treasures might add aone replayability but in the end if the game doesn't feel that good or simply is boring, tiresome or sinply juat feel one if the same those replayability factors wont be enough to get me back to table,it will feel like one of the same .Who cares for another sword when i ve seen so many ,in so many games(and i havent played that many games compare to Sam ).It will feel like evrything is repeating..
Seriously, only 2 negativ points and their about storage and the minis look? I read a lot of other negativ points on BGG. For example that it is just boring and too easy.
Wow, that was a bad review. Not bad made, bad not very critical. A Game that gets rediculus after level 2 is not a good game. I mean, what is fun about a big bad Monster which dies after the first hero tuching it? Don't get me wrong, I play the game and love it, but only after 5 pages of house rules from BGG. Fast leveling is og, but the RAW is just boring. Hope other videos are more critical.
Sam here...yes, this is the Burp-less version of the video that was posted over the weekend! Enjoy!
Hey! make a video showing the new 7 wonders anniversary packs, please!
Great review.
M...*belch* morty! Its an R..rpg in a *burp* in a box morty. An rpg in a box!

A lot of expansions can be sold either secondhand or on popular online stores.
I've played 3 times with just the Base Game and Massive Darkness is now my favorite Dungeon Crawl.
Em..isn this how most games on kickstarter work?
I think because there were some great mins that were only avalible through kickstarter, ive only stumbled on the game (old time decent fan) and it is frustrating not to be able to get the exclusives now
Pros of this video: It's a good video
Cons: It's burpless
7:45 Harsk, an iconic character from Pathfinder, is a Dwarf ranger :).
The beard is lookin good Senor Healey
Correction @ 11:20 with the door card. Your first treasure chest is the upgraded chest + . Not a standard chest.
Great review, Sam. You praised Sword & Sorcery for being a success with your family. How about Massive Darkness on that front?
the editing of your guys videos has improved! Keep it up!
I was saddened to see that his two cons were "storage woes and sculpt similarities. I was so psyched for this game. I wanted to love it. But the game play was stagnant and lame. The beard looks great, man! Keep it up!
This game looks interesting. How would you comment on the balance between luck factor and decision making in this game?
Great video Sam! Lookin forward to your dungeon crawl compare and contrast video!
So, when is the comparison coming between this and Sword & Sorcery? I am really interested in your opinion about how these two stack up against each other.
Is this a re-upload ?
the first treasure you spawned, should have been a upgraded treasure token. i 3D printed out some storage pieces. worked quite well
This looks like a dungeon crawl I would enjoy. Thanks Sam!
In the past Sam has not liked the D&D board games as Tom has.
My list goes that I've played from favorite to least:
Massive Darkness
Dungeons and Dragons Adventure Games
Descent 2nd Edition
Sword & Sorcery (Couldn't even get through the first scenario, too many rules/tokens/game management)
Sam do you have any suggestions of games thst are similar to this game?
How do we get massive darkness exclusives?????
I just picked up sword and sorcery. This looks like a great game but I'm not sure it has the depth and character development that sword & sorcery is going to have. How many of these table top rpgs can I buy???!!??
However many you have +1 is the correct number
:)
I tried Sword & Sorcery and found it too much game management/tokens/rules for what I was hoping for. Massive Darkness on the other hand gives me a Decentish Crawl in an afternoon with very easy game management.
I really wish this had been a Miami Dice review.
Rule clarification. The goblin agent should have actually had access to the weapon, because even though they don't have the weapon type on their stat, he can use it because it's a weapon. If it was a consumable potion, than no, he cannot use it.

I stand corrected. thank you @Snoop John
These is version without Sam burping???
these models deserve painting
oh yea, and great video too
Thank you Sam for your review. I agree with the + and the -. I think this game is fantastic. Specially for me who don't have a lot of time to play. Love your vids Sam. Are you painting those minis?? :-) Loved your painting vids too.
We own Desent, played only a little so far .If you compare this one to Desent?
Polis Christodoulou Massive Darkness gives me a Decentish Crawl in an afternoon. It's also does better co-op then the Road to Legend app. Also no frustration with wonky rules like Valyndra's Lair for Descent (No reinforcements for the Overlord in the final mission!?!)

i'll just wait on my zombicide green horde KS .
I miss the burp.
Where is the comparison video to Sword And Sorcery?! :O

ONKELREY Minions have their own health. So if the Goblin Boss has 2 health the Minions also have 2 health each.
RIP the burp 😥
I was VERY interested until I saw that the enemy gets to attack you even after being defeated. Kill then but they still get one last attack??? :-(
I was really disappointed with this one. I was hoping they'd step up a level from zombicide, but they made it even more simple... kinda run of the mill

Mmm... Seems like Sam never put that game in his bgg collection for some reason...
Kinda wish I got this over Black Plague 😭
Also, is it a legay game
This is a burpless version of the same video.
Never forget 15:03 where the burp was!
Hi There people!... Need help! - So... This one or Swords or Sorcery?!
Ben Baez Massive Darkness. Sword & Sorcery for me was too rules/tokens/ game management heavy for me to enjoy.
Is it me, or are there just too many similar to each other CMON dungeon crawling/rpg/ton of plastic games?
I've agreed with many of your ratings Sam, but not this one. This game has abysmal story, close to zero challenge and very linear gameplay. Despite me enjoying very ameritrashy games, this was absolutely not one of them.
gimli was a dwarf ranger
Seems weird the he rated the game an 8/10 when he said there wasnt anything mechanically bad about the game, just minor logistical issues
The dice tower guys consider 7.5 or higher to be really good games.
doesnt take away from the fact that he had nothing negative to say and didnt rate it a 10, just wondering why
Because a 10 is the perfect game. He may not have found anything mechanically bad with the game but that doesn't mean he felt it was perfect. He did find a few faults with it after all.

The game is to easy towards the end, love the components but the game seems flawed to me
Wow the core game is expensive. So no go for me. :(
You know what is a huge outrage with this game? The character skill tree sheets. I HATE the fact you run out of them. We were sorta promised versions you could draw on with markers, and wipe out. So they would last forever as long as you got new pens.

way too much going on for me.
