I remember when the dvd came out, one of the features was the uncut video of the tape they watch. I put it on a VHS with no label and mailed it to a friend without including a return address. He didn’t find it as funny as I did.
The green look is closest to the 2002 theatrical release. The subsequent DVD/VHS release in 2003 pushed the grading much bluer but it's originally intended to look how you see it now on BD/4K.
I bought the new 4k steelbook version. The steelbook is indeed the same seven days image. The fact a lot of the film is a mystery investigation instead of outright horror is probably why I like it more than most horror movies.
The 4K Arrow put out for the original is fantastic. The atmosphere is the best part of J horror. The remake feeling drawn out makes sense since it’s almost 20 min longer. I’ll probably check the remake out but the iconic video tape scene is better in the original imo
This movies atmosphere is creepy. That eerie music you hear when you watch the tape gives me goose pimples. If i heard that sound in the dark in my house, id karate chop in every direction until i found the light switch.
Sometimes I feel like Paramount is to the physical media what EA is to the videogames, a greedy company that will always find a way to be disappointing by relegating the quality product 😤
@@blackphilipalvarez1305 well, that’s not my point, but I agree with you. What I was trying to say is that you can’t afford to be greedy if you’re not selling top tier products.
I want the Scream Factory edition so I can get the full series. I tend to be a completist, which is why my boxed set collection is both overdone and underdone. I too, also only like the first one, but having all 3 at least ties everything up.
I got the ring last week. Great transfer on the paramount version. As being from New Zealand, that's all l could get. The movie is still awesome, and l watched it at the movies, and l will give it a 4 out of 5
Great movie. Definitely creeped me out back in the day unlike most. For me that mystery, investigation, and creepy tension pushes the film above most and one tier under the The Exorcist and Silence of the Lambs. Since I've gone gone all in on scream factory 4k restorations, giving them a sepeate little shelf, I'm inclined to get the still get that box just so i can make home with the others I have.
I agree, movie is awesome. I think The Ring is like The Exorcist for millenials (not as masterpiece level but both very impactful at their time). I remember back in the day I was about to enter to watch a kids movie in the theatre (i was 8) and a teenage girl (like 14 maybe) was coming out from The Ring screening and she was crying lol (and the movie wasn't even over), she was very scared. I saw it like a year later rented on dvd, anf fuuuck: it scared me shitless, scarred my childhood. Easily in my top 10 horror movies of all time
Yes, I am thinking about getting this paramount 4k steelbook, the paramount 20th anniversary edition Blu-ray steelbook, 2003 VHS/DVD copies of the movie as soon as I can to add to my collection.
Grew up with this movie, it’s not amazing or anything, it’s just about how it influenced me when I was a kid, saw it in theaters, and it blew me away as a young impressionable kid.
Preordered the steelbook. I put off buying the blu-ray because I had a feeling this was coming. Waited for the single release because nothing could make me buy the box set with those horrible sequels.
It was for people like me who don’t care for the sequels and only wanted the first film on 4K. I watched it today and wasn’t disappointed with the transfer. Well worth the $17.49 I paid.
Uk 4k limited edition is £45 for a steal book and some postcards, poster. Personally I would prefer audio commentary and making of video. Instead of a ton of paper scraps. Seriously over priced. Presentation over content.
I've got both discs and you can't see any difference on my 85" tv. Maybe on a huge projector you can , but not on a tv , looks and sounds exactly the same.
I remember when the dvd came out, one of the features was the uncut video of the tape they watch. I put it on a VHS with no label and mailed it to a friend without including a return address. He didn’t find it as funny as I did.

I agree. I worked at a theater in '02 and the print was about as green as these new pics.
I saw this in the theatre with my bro. The first ten minutes were so tense, I had to go get popcorn. My brother never let me forget it
I bought the new 4k steelbook version. The steelbook is indeed the same seven days image. The fact a lot of the film is a mystery investigation instead of outright horror is probably why I like it more than most horror movies.
When you think about it, it doesn't become a full-on horror film until the last like 10 minutes.
On a unrelated note
I got three paramount presents 4K to watch Ghost, Too Catch A Thief and Chinatown.
The 4K Arrow put out for the original is fantastic. The atmosphere is the best part of J horror.
The remake feeling drawn out makes sense since it’s almost 20 min longer. I’ll probably check the remake out but the iconic video tape scene is better in the original imo
Only the VHS version works its magic
The VHS version immediately starts off with showing you the cursed tape, then it goes into all the pre-roll trailers. Brilliant.
Recently got my set from Scream Factory Shock sale, watched the 4k with my wife and the picture was stellar. Glad to have it
I what to buy it but I heard that if you watch it you have 7 days to live. I'm to scared 😱 to buy it.
It's 7 hours for the edited version. lol
Literally at my Walmart about to get this Steelbook but I wanted to listen to this first thanks as always Ken
I did the same thing, watched his review before making the decision to buy The Ring 4k steel book at Walmart.
I watched this last night, I thought it looked pretty solid. Audio was quite good as well.
This movies atmosphere is creepy. That eerie music you hear when you watch the tape gives me goose pimples. If i heard that sound in the dark in my house, id karate chop in every direction until i found the light switch.
lol😅
Ring 2 is a solid sequel. The ring set is worth it.
Fun Fact : the scream factory 4k is on a 100 GB disc while the Paramount 4k disc is on a 66 GB disc. Go with the Scream Factory folks.

0:31 seconds in and I'm already raging that this came with a slip cover but apparently not for Canada.

I was waiting for you to do this one, I feel this is one of the better paramount releases. It was perfect got money's worth. Good transfer
Convoy 4k steelbook in the post 📫 on the way
I went with the Paramount Scares slipcover edition too. I thought the transfer was really good and the green filter was cool.

Scream factory collection is the same price at the steelbook(when on sale) plus its on a 100gn disc
Take a shot everytime you hear Blue/Green 🤣
Ken did you ever get the intruder set from umbrella in? I can't wait for you to watch that and review it.
@@WhirlingMusic It’s here. Just have to unbox
walmart has an exclusive 4k steelbook.. with the VHS design.. only 24.96
I was 8 when the film came out
Cool?
21 here. I'm old.
Agreed, the movie is just a little bogged down during the middle besides that I love it
I never understood the 7 day grace period lol

LG OED TVs are known to have a green tint. Especially when viewed at an angle. I wonder if the green you've been seeing is from the TV not the movie.
The UK steelbook that just came out is like the american VHS style one but wayyy cooler, steelbook, slipcover and rigit hard case and all
Both editions look exactly the same on my tv.
Come on Ken you can’t talk shit about the sequels when you bought jaws 3 and 4 😂
Jaws The Revenge is the Godfather compared to Rings. Don’t be silly.

Green, black and wet this film, like the inside of a well..........
My biggest problem with the movie is the ending makes the entire journey pointless
The Ring box set from Shout/Scream was good, I don’t know why they released it again, so pointless.

Ringu is terrible. The American remake is so much better!
I've never seen Ringu. I bought the 4K Arrow release months ago and haven't even watched it yet. Same goes for the The Grudge and Dark Water.
