How To Use Your Arms While Running

- Using your arms properly while running can help improve your running form and overall performance. Here are some tips on how to use your arms while running:
Keep your arms relaxed: Avoid tensing up your arms, as this can waste energy and cause unnecessary strain. Keep your arms relaxed and loose.
Bend your elbows: Your elbows should be bent at about a 90-degree angle. This helps to reduce unnecessary upper body movement and allows you to generate more power in your stride.
Swing your arms forward and back: Your arms should swing naturally forward and back, not side-to-side. Your hands should swing back to about hip level, and then forward to about chest level.
Don't cross your midline: Avoid crossing your arms across your body's midline while running, as this can cause your upper body to twist and throw off your balance.
Use your arms to help with momentum: Your arms can help you generate momentum and power in your stride. Try to time your arm swings with your leg movements, so that your arm swings forward with your opposite leg.
Keep your shoulders relaxed: Avoid hunching your shoulders or shrugging them up toward your ears. Instead, keep your shoulders relaxed and down, with your chest slightly lifted.
By keeping these tips in mind and practicing proper arm movement, you can improve your running form and become a more efficient runner.

Helpful. Thank you. Technique can always be improved. What make are your shoes Miss?
Isn't this something every runner almost automatically does?
U r just a genius, I was getting tired just after 200 meters but just after going through 2 of your videos, today easily ran 2 km. I m a beginner 51 yrs old
Tried this on my run today and I was floored by how much better it felt! I’m unstoppable now
LOVE the drumming analogy!
Chari, the content, the video quality, of EVERYTHING YOU share: always SO GOOD, SO HELPFUL! YOU are an INCREDIBLE teacher and communicator! Thank YOU so much! YOU have an AMAZING day of training!
Thanks so much!! ❤️❤️❤️
Totally agree. Thanks for the great info!
This is THE best analogy/ cue i have ever seen for syncing arm movements. I always struggled with the arm movement and got tired quickly. Greatly appreciated.
I’m a terrible runner. I started back after years of not running. Your tips have helped me soooo much. Thank you
You're so welcome! ❤️
OMG! What a difference. I had the arm swing in sinc with my legs, but I haven't "drummed". Made all the difference! Thank you!
Chari, many of your videos are too good to be true. They help me learn a lot. Thank you!
You are so welcome!
Girl, where were you five years ago when I tried running and gave up after an injury? I've started running again after your tips and I'm enjoying it. You're a godsend. ❤
MAM u deserve Gold medal from world championship 💥
Luv❣️frm India
You are the only person on social media to be THIS helpful for me. I can’t wait for outdoor to start so I can eat it up
I've only been running for about 6 months but I've been drumming for 45 years. I always make rhythmic associations when running and absolutely love this lesson. You're the bomb Chari! 🎶
You are sooooo good!!! You are my “virtual warm-up/technical running coach!!” Last Labor Day 2023 was my first half-marathon, and I have 5 half-marathons on the calendar this year!!! Thank you for all you do!!!! Will PR this Labor Day 2024!!!🏃🏾♂️
She’s really good at this
My mind is blown. What an amazing lesson - I can’t wait to try it out tomorrow!
There’s a reason the military marches just like this (swing the left arm forwards when you step with the right foot, and vice versa). It looks smoother, and is the most efficient. Great tip!
Yup, we always marched to ‘9 to the front 6 to the rear’. (9 inches forward, 6 inches rearward, as in hand placement)
Thanks! I am running faster now i love your videos
Hi I did this walking today. Amazing. By leaning forward instead of backwards, there was an instant improvement. Thank you again! I may actually start to enjoy walking and eventually jogging.
Young lady your teaching are the best I just turned 60 taking up running again, started with biking 1st 3 years ago
In high school I did the jump events to get points for the team and hurdles. Always thought I would be really good in the 400,800m and mile but didn’t get the chance so now I’m starring my bucket list of running again. Thanks for your instructions.
You are the "best"... accept my gratitude
Thank you! I love you❤
I would have never thought anyone could run without arms and legs in sync.
That's exactly what I was thinking, how can someone not run like this 🤔🤦♂️ arms and legs are automatically in sync
When I was at school we didn't get taught this. It was simply a command yelled across the field of "GO!" So even the teachers didn't know how to run otherwise they would have taught us, but they punished us for what they didn't understand either if we failed to complete the track.
Best running tips I've seen on youtube. Much appreciated!!!
This is such a powerful cue! I tried it on a run today, and I could tell immediately exactly what you talk about here: it's a lot bouncier, and it gave me a lot of forward momentum. Thanks!
I've watched a lot of videos already discussing running forms and I've never heard about this one. I'm gonna try this on my next run. Thank you so much!
Go for it! 🙌🙌
U doing the most to stay healthy 😊 I love it, me three!
You’re way too good at describing all these tips, thank you!
Great tip. Thanks!
✨Thank you, Sister 🙏✨
That's a fantastic explanation and demonstration. So easy to understand. Hopefully also easy to remember the next time i go running.
Glad it was helpful! 🙌🙌
Great work dear 🙌🙌🙌
You’re crushing this content appreciate the efforts!
Effort* the word never needs suffix to denote "many types of effort," effirt is just effort no matter the quantity and quality beung referenced.
This actually sounds so relaxing, I like that it’s something to think about while running!
My runs have never been the same (in the best way) since I took this advice a year ago!!! Seriously thank you 🙏
I've been running for about a year and I've lost 40kg and decided to do weight lifting which has been tidious for me but your tips have gotten me right back on track to run, thanks 😊
Keep it up!!!
I didn't even know that wasn't automatic, but I have seen people run like it's not, so great job of pointing it out with that explanation.
This is great! Thank you
I like your arms, it's looks strong, yet elegant.
You have found your niche, my dear. I can't even run anymore, but I'm loving it.
You can do it!

You're the best! Thank you because running is not an easy thing to love but it's something that I'm gradually starting to love and I'm trying to be able to cover more distance than i am now. You're tips are helping me achieve a better form and with that, i hope more distance.

It especially helps to drive your arms when going uphill. Good practice for your form imo.
This is The BEST tip. Thanks
At last. Something useful on here. Thanks.
I don’t even run but I wound up watching this video-
Lol, I'm a 60 years old paraplegic. I joined an athletic club at 17 to help a friend. I remember the drills to get tempo. She is unbelievable in her simplicity so I sent her vid to a friend who is a runner.
My friend broke our national record the next year. I was a paraplegic by then. I was happy to see his hard work pay off. Going pass ppl on pathways in my neighborhood I have actually stopped runners and told them to seek running videos.
Always learning something from this channel.
Great idea! Got to remember this.
Never ever in my life some explaniere it so well! Thank you!

THANK YOU!!! You’re awesome 🙂
Watching how hard track stars hit the actual track, makes my knees feel. The knees over toes guy “has helped me with my knees a lot I wonder have you ever followed his stuff or do you train the back of your knees… How do your knees handle this?
Also, thank you for your videos. They’ve made me a better runner.
Thank you Chari!, Now I know why it’s important to keep that rhythm. But muscle and mind connection is key.. Appreciate your help. Great explanation ❤👍🏽
