Its so crazy how he admits that he was doing all the things that "should" provide contentment and enlightenment like living in a small community together each taking care of each other looking out for one another, etc. But he STILL felt an unsatisfaction within himself that led him to look to God for true everlasting love. Thats the most acid thing that could happen.

Tom Servo - he was probably about 43 when this was made... I also looked young for my age and still do to some extent... After the later 40s into your 50s it hits you harder. Young adulthood is considered by some to be 18 to 40. I still felt felt young when I was 40. So this guy was really just a little past young adulthood at the time... Early middle age...

I was telling my younger wife about this tonight and stumbled on this later. Made me giggle. I miss that world of hope of freedom. I love my wife and kids. Not the drudge of maintaining it all. Job, home, etc. The hippie mindset is not gone but it is an illusion. It's for the young. The world is a different animal now.
Difficult to teach my kids how to cope in it. Paradise is only in the mind not in this world.

Same energy but completely different drive, one was destruction, other is creation. It takes a very special drive to achieve things while basically alone and hurting. It takes a special state of mind. All I can say is that when he was talking about the goat you can see it flash in his eyes, Manson would have killed for that goat, he speaks about understanding that. I admire that in this guy, I wouldn't have killed for the goat, but teeth would be flying at least.

The war was something they were against whether Democrats Kennedy or Johnson were president or Republican Nixon was in the White House.

centervilletn - Great verbiage! I get it now, man! I was born in ‘53. I entered my teen years in 1966, graduated from high school in ‘71. I was only very minimally touched by the hippie culture. Of course, the music of the time was huge in my life, but I confess I didn’t pay much attention to the words. I’m shocked now when listening to “the oldies” and I realize the meaning of some songs I sang! 😊 i was actually only around marijuana once in my life, and was never offered it. I think I was probably a little naive. Of course, I took on some of the fashions, but not the more extreme. I lived in Texas, in a very small community just outside Houston (it’s now incorporated into the city). It was more “kicker” (cowboy) than hippie, and I ran in the athletic crowd rather than the hippie crowd. I’m not exactly sure how I “missed out”, or if it was a good thing or not. I’m not saying I was “better than” other kids who did go that route, but I don’t regret missing out on drugs and promiscuity. Culture is a very interesting thing. It’s amazing the changes I can see looking back on my own lifetime.

The word heavy meant intense. The Civil Rights Movement had a great deal going on, needed to be going on, and it was very, very intense. When one is fighting for Civil Rights, it is, indeed, "heavy,", and understandably so. Some of those involved in social change and bringing about justice were in that frame of mind 24/7 and had it turned up on 11 all the time, not just black folks. It is a most challenging endeavor.

I wish we could know what happened to this guy. I am not much of a hippie myself since I think Peace & Love is all a bunch of bull but I really appreciate how free spirited the hippies were. Just is hard because I am 23 and a lot of the things about the hippies fascinate me with free love and open nudity. I'm not saying I'd go around having sex with everyone but sometimes I think there are things we deem romantic that I really see as a sign of friendship such as holding hands or a kiss on the forehead. Then as far as nudity goes.. I mean we are brought into this world nude yet shun it every chance we get.

We all have that God-shaped hole in our hearts that only Jesus can fill. Jeremiah 29:
11 “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the LORD, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.
12 Then you will call upon Me and go and pray to Me, and I will listen to you.
13 And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart”. The invitation is available to all!
