I was in high school from 65-69 so came along at the time of partying, dancing, great music. Had a baby in 1970 so I had responsiblities early, but still found time to do alot of what is mentioned...but we do get older and things do change. I feel that there are some good docs on you tube on this time period. I am grateful to have been a part of it all.

What happened fellow boomers? I am an aging Hippie and still an activist. I got out of my sick state of Apathy after they killed Lennon. You can have your material goods but they won't mean nothing if the world continues the way it is going. We must turn things around now. Never let the dream die or give into Fear. We have the power to still change the world

thomdathom Yes sadly many in my generation sold out, got their priorities out of order an i am ashamed of them. I still believe that Peace is better than War an i know there are still hundreds of thousands my age that still care an trying to wake up the fragile planet. I have put up a challenge many times to my fellow boomers that have become yuppies but none have yet to explain their actions. I have been ridiculed and attacked for not caring about being politically correct or the status quo an daring to believe that we can still make a difference. It is up to all ages to stand against intolerance an injustices.

    • @RandyR

The American Dream is fine but not when it requires running over people and being a greedy yuppie in the process. It won''t mean anything if we don't have a planet to live on. For me , that dream is dead and i am okay with that. Can't take anything with you at the end and what we do for others and the planet will count more in eternity. I don't have to keep up with the Status Quo or the Jones's

You can email me at randypw6967@ gmail.com Being a military brat, I got to live out most of my 60's liberation in the 80's. Still an aging Hippie inside. It isn't about sex, drugs and rock an roll. It is about being aware and wanting to help make this world a better place. Love an Peace is much bigger than a decade or generation. I am ashamed of many in my generation. My email is already on profile. Just realize that as a recovering alcoholic addict this is the most dangerous month of the year and I am desperately trying to sell 600 items. Time is not on my side

This whole narrative that you have to settle down and have kids has never made sense to me. I mean if that’s what you want to do, then by all means, but I just don’t see why it’s necessary. I don’t see why you can’t just enjoy life, travel and have fun. Especially if you have a good job, I feel like in that case you earned the right to do whatever you want.

  • @Chemical1Objectivity

It’s quite sad how the counter culture participants appear to have fallen back into the same life as their parents. These boomers had children, and like their parents instilled the values they rebelled against at one time right into their children, whether consciously or unconsciously. I would have thought things would have changed after the cultural shift of the late 60s. Yet to this day we are continuing the drug war, proxy wars, racism, misogyny, queerphobia, child abuse, consumerism, wealth inequality, and so on and so forth. Inter-generational trauma is real. They all sang about power in the hands of the people. It’s been over 50 years, what happened? Going to blame having children and responsibilities? I’m sorry then that you had children, whether you chose to or whether it was an accident.

Sigh. Take me back to where it all began. This less than 10 minute video clearly and somewhat lovingly hits most of the high points of how some of the Silent generation and the early Boomers began a revolutionary idealistic movement that was a real treat for the Jones generation like me and the early Gen X to grow up in. "I'd love to change the world, but I don't know what to do, so I leave it up to you".
The ideals of the movement continue to this day, have forever changed the world, are are still shaping our future.
The environment, pollution, civil rights, equal rights, human rights, over-consumption, etc etc etc.
Pretty darn good for a history class assignment. What level and what grade did you get?

I asked my dad that once. He experienced the 60s. He said they were very, very small in number. Nothing like the media portrays. He said most went on to the 70s and tried to live in hippie communes but the numbers dwindled and people went back to middle income America, just like the principles they sought to overcome. You see, teenagers and people in their early 20s are really naive and ignorant about the world.

    • @Oliberty89

It's not that they are naive and ignorant, that's your projections. They failed at their movement yes, totally. But what they did resonates throughout history and the world today. It will happen again and this time it will push through. That's what they were ignorant about, inflicting change in the society, they had no leaders who were able to spread their message.

It looks great when you study it from a historical context, but my parents went through it and they were rough times. Losing a president, MLK, getting involved with Vietnam which was terrible. The racial riots across cities in America. The main difference was people came out to protest in very large numbers because the government was drafting people into the war. Nowadays they have enough people who want to serve that the government doesn't need to draft. Otherwise people would have been apathetic overall like they are now. But maybe now things will change once people realize how bad things will be with the AI and digital dictatorship.

I think people's heads are more up in the air nowadays than they used to be with all the "knowledge" and all the pseudo-social platforms like i-phones and internet. People didn't have devices that kept them from each other. People would be closer together, not separated by technology. This all happened before all the wi-fi stuff, where people were more together than they are now, they were much closer to each other, things were localized, not world-wide. People are connected to each other online, but it's not the same as reality, actually seeing each other face to face and connecting on a real concrete level.

The death of JFK had nothing to do with the hippies. This is pure revisionism.
The counterculture of the 60s was focused on a more peaceful world, a search for a better meaning of life, equal rights for all, and above all the freedom to pursue their vision of life (pursuit of happiness). They questioned the materialistic society they rightly perceived all around them and saw the government as the enemy of their freedom. Women were seen as partners in this new exploratory world, capable of taking their place along side of men due to their own unique strengths and abilities.
Today's feminists with their war on men as about as far as one can get from the hippie chicks of the 60s. Tolerance, as the word is in use today where the government grants and enforces special rights for some people who are more equal or more deserving than others, would have been anathema to the hippies. The only thing they wanted was the government to leave them alone.
What a long strange trip it's been.

Chris - I was just about to post the same thing you said until I saw your post. The movement started a good year or so before JFK's assassination. That event may have helped to spur on the use of drugs and "outrageous" behaviour, etc. Drugs weren't even involved in the origins of the "movement" - I sort of think that drugs were introduced to derail the movement. @@linda9081 Hi Linda :) My Mom was a real hippie BUT she also kept a job as a teacher, held a mortgage, and provided a summer home out in the middle of nowhere where we lived a hippie life all summer long. Being a teacher she had summers off. A house to call home and a Mom who catered to the souls of us kids and all the people she came in contact with. She was a flower child Jesus hippie, she smoked but didn't do drugs. We had the best of both worlds. We had a goat as a house pet. Also two baby alligators, a turtle, and a wild raccoon who stayed friendly only for a short time. Hahaha ... could have been because of the alligators.
My Mom is now in her 90s and that hippie attitude, still going strong. I didn't see her as a hippie when growing up and I actually had a real problem with her "never fight back" dedication to peace and reconciliation amongst adversaries. I've since come to realize "Hippie" means a lot more than communes and smoking pot. Hippie is a permanent state of mind and a beautiful condition of the heart. Thankfully my Mom had and still has both. I joined the party late but every moment of my life is lived in a state of soul expression that I learned firsthand from my super cool hippie mom. Thank you, Mom. :) P*E*A*C*E

Some say the Hippies failed. Guess what, so has everyone else. The present system has failed and is falling apart. People was offered an alternative. It did not fail, humanity simply chose not to do it.

Spoiledl? lol you're talking about a tiny percentage of youth in the USA. What about the rest of the world? Do you think that this movement only happened in the States? I'm from the UK and we were far from spoiled. Either educate yourself or keep your thoughts to yourself. If you want a "spoiled" generation, look at the 80s or even right now - a bunch of consumers, plugged into the economic system (that is failing, btw), waiting for the next version of iPhone to come on the market. The Sixties generation actually got rid of much of their possessions and found ways of bypassing the economic system which is essentially a form of slavery (you don't believe that? then think about who controls the value of the paper that's in your wallet or purse - you? lol)

..Gathering people who wants to be a part of building a network of stable, fully self sustaining and self sufficient communities (a.k.a. life-boats for the coming social & environmental collapse). Peaceful communities that are built upon foundation of : love, spirituality, mercy, generosity, tolerance, intelligent, and wisdom. If you are interested in becoming a part of this grass root efforts, I encourage your reply.
This Community ARK Project is looking for peaceful, patience, humble, and kind-hearted people who are awaken and aware of the coming social & environmental collapse; who want to roll up their sleeves and participate in preparatory efforts. One cannot pull someone out of a raging river standing on a muddy slippery slope. In order to pull someone out of the river, one must stand on a firm solid foundation. A fully self-sufficient community is that solid foundation, upon which we stand in order to rescue other less fortunate who will be affected by the collapsing environment. If people are struggling to survive as the environment collapses, how can they help others? People need fully self-sufficient communities to shelter and nourish them, in order for them to reach out and help others.
We are gathering people from all spectrum of professional background: engineers, scientists, architects, biologists, farmers, doctors, nurses, artists, etc. Both skilled and unskilled people. Those with knowledge will teach those who lack them. Those not in the know will listen and learn so they might in turn teach others in the community. We have spent 6 years researching technology that were designed to allow Mars colonies to thrive in a desolate environment. We are now planning on using those very same technology to prepare people for the coming environmental collapse. If you are interested in helping out, we could use the help to reach the ears of people who are awaken via social media, or you can read our blog titled "Generalized Plan of Action" for a list of positions you can volunteer for.
We are speaking to those of like mind who do not need convincing; in their hearts and in their thoughts, they recognize the catastrophe that lay ahead if our modern societies continue on their current path of promoting competition, strife, ignorance and scarcity. This Community ARK Project is lighting a beacon so that those with similar mind set will know that they are not alone in their thoughts and impulse; that there are others like them out there who desire to come together to pool our effort in order to extract ourselves and place ourselves on a different path, one that promote cooperation, harmony, foresight, and a nurturing environment.

Turn On, Tune In, Drop Out: Counterculture of the 1960s -- I grew up in the 1960's and was a staunch Hippie for 6 long years ! I had the good fortune of growing out of it in what was actually a short time ! I know of so many that are still Hippies ! Of course by the time one reaches adulthood one is entirely responsible for ones own life ! It is very important that one has ones feet firmly on the ground and be responsible, earn ones living and support the United States of America ! I though blame so much of the toxicity of the Hippie culture on adults and the parents all across America ! Take a real close look at the parents of today's world all across America and you will find out that today's parents are as irresponsible and liberal as can be ! Over the past 5 generations the adult population all throughout America has grown more and more immature, less and less educated regardless of how the public school system chooses to believe and more and more involved in materialism ! The majority of the adult population all across America is actually destroying what was once the fine and wonderful country represented by the Red, White and Blue flag ! It is actually the irresponsible adult population all across America that had created the Hippie counterculture movement ! Today's Hippies represent a vast array of evil characteristics but fortunately the Baby Boom generation, the Hippies and those of what later became the New Age Movement were able to put aside much of the worldliness and materialism so prevailant in America today and partake of a much higher degree of Transendental Spiritual Knowledge and Understanding ! Many of those in the New Age Movement have a much more finer perception and true advanced Mystical Knowledge of Christianity unknown of by so many Christians all throughout the world ! Many New Ager's became involved in the advanced teachings of Buddhism as well as the advanced teachings of Hinduism ! A good many of the New Ager's even found a much higher degree of spirituality in the Sufi religion as well as the Sikh religion ! A few of the New Ager's even found the supreme spirituality of both Radhasoami and ECKANKAR ! Best Wishes -- Joseph Stefurak
