  • Talking through five of my favorite features of the Timex Marlin Blackout wristwatch by Todd Snyder as well as five of the features that I like the least. The Timex Marlin blackout is an exciting new offering from Timex utilizing a handwinding mechanical movement, the first time Timex has offered such a movement since 1982. In a bold move Timex went into this market with a niche offering of a handwinding 34mm watch. This recreation of the original was only improved with the black dial versions from Todd Snyder. Tune in to hear a variety of detail talk about the watch design and execution as well as some broader thoughts about the brand.

I also believe this piece is a huge deal. Not only-like you mentioned-is this the first mechanical watch by Timex in decades, this is an extremely bold move by them! 34mm is indeed a very small watch by today’s ridiculous standards, but that is one of the key elements in this watch that makes it very especial. In a sea of over sized watches, Timex paid respect to their heritage by releasing this incredible faithful reissue of a classic piece. In terms of design and ethos, they made no compromises. For me, this is a home run! Yes, the movement is questionable. Yes, the strap is crap. Yes, the crystal is acrylic-but that is just like the original Marlins. This watch is, to me, the bastion of a new era for Timex-and that, is something very special. My Marlin Blackout proudly sits next to my Swiss pieces and holds its weight. Thank you for the great review!

love the size. tastefully fits under cuffs instead of some ludicrous bump of other watches. Wearers of showey, "bling-ey" watches always struck me as a feminine "look at me, I"m pretty" trait.

I'm attracted to this watch because of the size. I haven't worn a watch for many years and now I'm looking into it, the massive size of most contemporary watches seems insane to me.

I was super excited when Timex re-released the Marlin and I have also purchased a blackout edition. The only issue I have with the blackout edition is that in some lights, I find it hard to tell the time with the silver-on-black hands. One of the compromises of having such a great looking dial! Like you, I'm also hoping that Timex continue to produce interesting pieces with automatic movements in the future.

I do appreciate your honest and well done review. I also believe that Timex is very important to the watch world and want continued success for them, also am very happy to see the reissue of the Marlin because it was the watch of my young life and owned 3 hand me downs form my daddy and older brother. The Marlin (to me) always had an understand and simple eloquence while at the same time being super reliable, rugged, and accurate.
All that being said $200 Is way over priced for this watch...maybe the high price has more to do with Todd Snyder's name being on it, but despite my happiness to see it reissued I can buy a much higher quality watch for much less.
    Keep bringing us reviews😁

I have the Timex Marlin reissue with the silver dial. I think it looks great, even with its small size. I did change the leather strap with a steel mesh band . Now it looks spectacular. It looks like the new model with the silver face, silver hand and indices, and steel mesh band. But mine has the black hands and indices which makes it easier to read.

On the movement - the original Marlin had a super cheap movement that didn't even have jewels. The cheap Chinese movement in the new marlin is actually an upgrade over the movement in the original.
I think people miss that point.
If anyone wants an original, check eBay. You can get originals in decent condition for $20-$30, and the movement is so simple that they pretty much all still rub.

Good video on the Marlin. I have the Marlin reissue and have had for about a month now and I love it. Its a great watch for me personally bc i have smaller wrists and fits perfectly. I did change the OEM strap as you did to a grey leather and it looks great with the gold face. I got mine 20% from Timex website by signing up and for my first purchase on the site, so it was too bad of a deal. I agree with you, I think the Marlin is a better look the 40mm automatics that came out after, but they do not look bad either. I personally like the marlin over them.

Thank you for a great review. I have a few minor comments:
The watch actually doesn't come with a mineral crystal. Its a plain old acryllic crystal, which actually is a good thing, as you can polish off scratches, which you wouldn't be able to with a mineral crystal. As a side-effect, the domed design of the acryllic crystal is, in my oppinion, very appealing. Something you wouldn't be able to achieve with sapphire, for instance. The acryllic crystal also stays true to the original marlin, which you can tell has been a priority for Timex - I mean, who in their right mind makes a new 34mm watch for a gentleman unless the reason is staying true to the original? :)
You mention that the fact that you can buy a vintage timex is a downside. While I understand where you are coming from with this one, you have to consider that the old timex marlin isn't really servicable due to the screwless construction of the movement in the vintage marlin. The new one is servicable, so if something happens to the movement, you can easily repair it.
just my 2 cents. Have a nice one

Great thoughts and vid, thanks mate! I really like this little beauty, especially the size of 34mm - Seagull movements aren’t bad, but 200 bucks are IMO way to overpriced - if Timex would have been priced based on the Orient Bambino (not to forget it has an in-house mivement), I had already snatched one!

    • @555Gear

I agree that it would be great for Timex to develop their own movements but seagull is a great company that makes more mechanical movements and watches than any other company and have the manufacturing set up for scale. I like retro styled watches and Timex has a great history and it would be great to see more mechanical models. I like the style of the bambino more and the Timex automatic but appreciate more daring designs like the marlin as it shows a company willing to take risks and go for it. I would be interested in a Timex moon phase even quartz as that would be fun.

I realize this watch is probably more targeted at collectors/not for the masses, but I do find the size too small for me. I'm much more interested in the 40mm automatic, both because automatic is more appealing than having to remember to wind, and 40mm is a dressy size for me with a 7.25" wrist (42 is about ideal, I can pull off some 44mm). I have a 38mm I bought almost 20 years ago, and it's about as small as I would wear now, and would never buy something that small now. Kudos to Timex for coming out with the watch though. I will be seriously considering the Marlin 40mm automatic for a dress watch. I do like the minimalist look of it, but part of me also wishes it had the numerals from the 34mm version.

Fantastic review. I loved the look of the champagne and black dial Marlins but the 34 mm size was just too small. 36-38 mm would have been the sweet spot. The new one at 40 mm in my opinion is too big for a dress watch and the new dial is not nearly as interesting. Otherwise I loved the watch but ended up having to sell mine because it was just too small on my wrist.

My comments in the order of your video:
Authentic heritage, it was based upon a 1965 design. Type setting were in fact Arabic numerals.
It’s fitted with a plexiglass or a plastic crystal to reduce cost which was the wrong shape, a mineral crystal fitted to some of the early watches was ordinary glass.
Generally a mineral crystal is an ordinary glass crystal that has been heat treated or chemically treated to withstand scratches. While it is not as scratch-resistant as sapphire, it is more scratch-resistant than plastic.
Band: You’ll never get a proper mechanical movement, as this would increase the cost, hence the fake lizard peel sawn onto a cheap leather inner.
£175.55 or £174.00 was what it would cost here in the UK, think it’s too expensive, and a bad reproduction for the price paid, changing bands wouldn’t help the watch.
Doubt whether it would ever become a collectors item, as an expensive fake.
I have a growing collection of old fashioned watches, not just Timex, I was born in the 1950’s, and Timex Group B.V., or Timex Group, is an American - Dutch holding company in Holland and in the USA, the current new technology could never recreate an exact 1960’s design, for that, there would be no comparison between the truly vintage and modern day Marlins.

The dial is simplicity at its best. If Timex released a 38mm automatic version with sapphire crystal and a quality strap, and charged $325 I’d gladly pay it. Those things would sell very well imo. There is just something about that vintage dial.
The 40mm version they released is sadly way too big.
