An excellent review I think you for actually opening up the watch and taking a look at the movement. I would love to see a video of you regulating the movement as close as you can to COSC spec. An excellent review I am still debating on getting one. If it was priced at $75 it would be an immediate buy.
Regulation would be not too bad to demonstrate. The person on this blog did a full service and then regulated and it seemed to be excellent! www.google.com/amp/www.bobinchak.com/watchmaking/2017/12/9/timex-marlin-thoughts-teardown%3fformat=amp
The new one is great but I'm still buying the vintage ones for the actual price that they cost in the 60s. I'm paying anywhere from $2 to $15 for very clean examples at flea markets and the variety seems to be endless.
Think the current ones lacked the charisma of the vintage, I have some possibly rare interesting Marlins, if only they hadn’t cut corners and gone to real mechanical for the money, as the 2017 was overrated.
@timetrope the spacer in the new watch is because the seagul movement is that from a womans watch, in the vintage pieces the m24 movement fills the case so spacers are basically part of shock protection and not just to fill the void due to a smaller movement. beat rates look similar, and you need to remove the hair from the vintage movement :) are the lugs still the odd 19mm as per the vintage piece?
That's fair the application of the spacer is a tad different. But I still don't see it as a major swipe against the reissue. The beat rate is indeed higher, I should have probably put em on the PC timegrapher for display but it is 21600 bph. Haha I should have given the movement a bit of a clean up. Most of my marlins are 18mm as is this reissue.
For the Vintage ones I've gotten quite a few from thrift stores but if you are interested in getting one online eBay is a good spot as long as you look carefully at the description and try to get one that's been serviced and is keeping good time a pretty good deal can be had. If you want the reissue you can also look at some eBay stores they tend to have some good prices but if you are in the US then I'd just recommend the Timex website directly as they seem to have some pretty good promos going in their on sale section a lot of the time and I've seen the Handwind reissue pop up for $99usd on occasion.
Hi. Are the springbars a little loose in the lug holes on your marlin reissue? And do they make clicking sounds when you pull the strap to take it on and off? (Even when the watch was new) Mine does this, so im trying to find out if its the same for all marlins or if mine has an error.
Good day, I honestly can't say I have noticed any out of place clicking sounds when putting the watch on and off (at this point I consider my watch still new as I have maybe worn it 5 times).
I wonder how many people had their timex's serviced in the 60's. Would the price of a service back then have made sense for an 11 dollar watch? Just like today does the price of a service make sense for a 100 dollar watch?
Yeah I wonder the same. I would probably guess based on the marketing that not many did and it seems that there are more than a few stories of watchmakers not wanting to service them.
My late father did, he had a Timex Marlin, think his was a later 70’s with Roman numerals, once a year for a service maybe, wish I could remember his 60’s watches.
The reissue was nothing like the 1965 period, or anything from the 1960’s, the case was the wrong shape, plexiglass instead of glass for the crystal was an issue, although some watches had plexiglass within the 1960’s, this new model for its price had a cheap throwaway strap, couldn’t comment on the mechanical ⚙️ side of the new watch, or whether it kept good time, I have some old 60’s Marlins, the look and feel was real, and I wouldn’t buy the reissue, as not a true representation of the 1965 period.
Great review, thanks..👍

I agree with everything you said.
I would buy the handwind version. Under £140 now here in the UK
That price is not bad! If they toss in a discount code to bring it down to 100 it would be a steal!
The old or new watch?

Yeah, it's awesome so many original Marlins can still be found around, its a testament to their prevalence!

Hello. Where can I buy like this watch? Thx

Mucho mejor el mecanismo moderno.
I would still take the original.
I have got a 1965 original, the comparison watch was not the same as mine thou.
