Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart is the best character in the history of Doctor Who. Even more so than the Doctor. They should run all these again on BBC1 and cheer everyone up, I completely forgot about all this UK split stuff and the rest while watching that there again, It took me back. Come on Beeb, put them on again, for old times sake and the sanity of Britain.
I think Battlefield is underrated. I think it crosses the line into "so bad it's good" territory. It's just so bonkers from start to finish and as a result it's a really fun watch.
Many people love it. How can you hate the idea of armoured medieval knights from the age of King Arthur with futuristic weapons, an evil sorceress, nuclear weapons and big blue demons from hell? And the Brigadier. And Bessie. And lots of other good stuff.
I don't care what other people think of it. 30 years later and I still smile for the entire story and it brightens my day. Since when is that a bad thing?
This clip, beyond the amazing Brigadier moments, really is a microcosm of the whole story. At one moment you see a brilliant mask for the Destroyer (one of the best designed for the classic series) and then you realise Morgana's crystal ball is the top of a lamp post...
"You were supposed to die in bed...and then be resurrected as a Cyberman but resist the programming because of the Power of Love or something in a tribute that we're not entirely sure isn't a bit disrespectful yet."
Here's what I think, I think they paid homage to the actor with the painting in the plane. Then they paid homage to the character of the Brigadier when he become a Cyberman, saved his daughter from death, and then shot Missy so that the Doctor, his friend, didn't have to.
It was absolute shit, not as bad as what they did to the Master with the ultimate abomination, Kinky Poppins but still a slap in the face to the classic era.
Practically nothing in all of Doctor Who made me cry. But after the Brigadier knocks out the Doctor and says "sorry Doctor, but i´m much more expendable than you are" its just beyond me. Cause of how much he underrated himself and because he thinks he is about to die in order to save Planet Earth once again.
One of the best episodes of Doctor Who, tied with Curse of Ferric and Remembrance of the Daleks, I especially loved this defining moment of the Brigadier's character and that this was the episode that shattered the boundary that made Doctor Who a Sci-Fi show by introducing magic, blending the line between Fantasy and Sci-Fi Roger Zelazny-style and making the show a Science Fantasy instead, which greatly interested me. It is also an awesome recreation of the Arthurian legend.
That scene with the telephone in the Tardis actually brought a tear to my eye. Matt Smith pulled it off beautifully, but the tears were actually there for Nick Courtney. He deserved a role in NuWho more than anyone. Truly a lovely man.
Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart showed courage standing up to the Destroyer, thanks to the Doctor giving him silver bullets to stop that monster. Glad that he survived that encounter when the Doctor thought he was dead.
Brigadier has been in Doctor Who for aaaaaaaaages. Before that I'm pretty sure the same actor even had a part in one of the later Hartnell episodes with the Daleks, before Brigadier was introduced to the series with the second Doctor.

Oh, I wouldn't like that. If they're going to have him make a quickie cameo they should do it like they did with the early Doctors in "Name." But I do think having Kate Stewart involved is a wonderful tribute. Both because there's a family tie and because she's honoring his legacy by reforming his beloved UNIT back into something he'd be proud of. They'd allowed quite a bit of corruption to set in during most of their latter day appearances.
I wish the destroyer got more screen time, he was really the best thing in Battlefeild. And to think what would of happened if he had not ripped a hole in his armour, I doubt a soft metal like silver can pierce iron. FYI originally the Destroy was going to appear as a human man and then transform into a daemon, but they didn't have the time or money for that.
Nicholas Courtney was very ill at times. He couldn't do it. He did one episode of the SJA adventures, 'cause that was one of the few times he actually did not feel ill.
Even as a kid I loved how the Brigadier turned the premise of the Destroyer’s question back onto him; ‘Can this world do no better than you as its champion?’ ‘Probably!’

To be fair, we've had Dalek's crippled with baseball bats (and one shot in the face with a rocket launcher), a demon from hell killed by silver bullets, a Supreme Dalek talked into suicide and much more... And we've not even left the McCoy era yet. These days everything is immune to everything except convoluted and confusing master-plans.
Battlefield was about the only Dr Who story that I liked from the Sylvester McCoy run of Dr Who. Personally, I think McCoy could have been an awesome Doctor, but the show was being destroyed intentionally by Michael Grade who quite publicly hated it.
+The Batman I disagree I think McCoy did an excellent job once his personality moved away from the whole "Troughton 2.0" thing he was written as. He was the most calculating and probably one of the darkest doctors of the classic era. That and he was Scottish, which gets some bonus points in my view since all the best ones usually are (Minus Tom Baker of course)
KiddCrowley You're entitled to your opinion. And on something like this, that's all it is, opinion. Whether any given Doctor is good or bad is for the most part purely a subjective matter. As for all the best doctors being Scottish, what about Pertwee, Colin Baker (you already mentioned Tom) Hartnel, Troughton, Smith and Eccleston? They were all just as good. And to be fair, I think the only reason any particular Doctor was bad was not down to the actor, but the scripts they were given to play.
The Batman Every Doctor has been in his own way good and brought something unique and new to the character each time. As watchers of the show we can only really pick and mix what we like from which Doctors we watch. Tom Baker and Sylvester McCoy have sentimental and nostalgic value to me as portrayals of the Doctor because they were my grandfather's favorites and he was the one who introduced me to the show by showing some of the old recorded VHS tapes he made whenever the show would air on some strange channel that probably doesn't exist anymore. There are more or less some Doctors I like less. Hartnell, Colin Baker and Eccleston being the big 3. (And when I say dislike I don't mean hate. They're good men and good actors I just wasn't too big a fan of their portrayal as the Doctor)
KiddCrowley Fair comments and well put. So, what about supporting characters? Do you have any favourites? Like I've said in other posts, I have always liked The Brigadier. He was always portrayed as a strong person with a well developed sense of duty, responsibility and morality. Katy Manning as Jo Brand was another favourite of mine, partially because I grew up with her as Pertwee's longest running companion. Sarah Jane is, I think one of Everyone's favourites, and Harry who travelled with Baker up until the end of Genesis of the Daleks too. That, to me is what kept Dr Who going, not the monsters or the way out stories, but the characters. For the most part they were written well and designed to develop and grow. Something that is crucial in any TV show.
While he's not really considered a companion, I do consider The Brigadier to be the best friend and companion the Doctor has ever had. I remember always smiling whenever he showed up in an episode. Other contenders for my favorite companions are Sarah Jane Smith (naturally) as well more of the recent companions like Amy Pond and Captain Jack Harkness. Oh and Bernard Crippins as Donna's grandad. I miss him especially
Watch the whole episode, they had everything but silver lined up till the Doctor flippently said get some silver bullets so the Brig ordered some. They did have gold warheads for "You know what"
That was a wonderful moment out-of-universe, but in-universe it didn't make sense. He could have just gone back a few days, weeks, or months earlier. If he didn't try to prevent L-S's death, it wouldn't create a paradox, any more than it's paradoxical to have adventures with River or to pop in on Rose before his last regeneration and promise here a really great year.
Flattery: Wait for me brigadier the Doctor 7th and ace: what in the whole universe multiverse was that 7th Doctor: Me but as an human inventor who built the Tardis and regeneration on earth.
Not bad for a final televised outing for the Brig on the main show. A shame Nick couldn't make it in time for any returns beyond Sarah Jane Adventures, though.
This is the Doctor's Seventh incarnation, he was never involved in the Time War. The Time War didn't come until sometime between Seven's regeneration into McGann and Eccleston's Doctor meeting Rose.
"Sorry Doctor I think I'm rather more expendable than you are!" My appreciation points for the Brigadier just hit infinity.

He finally fought an enemy that wasn't immune to bullets ( the quote from Robot is something close to that)
To be fair, we've had Dalek's crippled with baseball bats (and one shot in the face with a rocket launcher), a demon from hell killed by silver bullets, a Supreme Dalek talked into suicide and much more... And we've not even left the McCoy era yet. These days everything is immune to everything except convoluted and confusing master-plans.
Judo chop!
Anyone here from tonight's episode of Doctor Who? Because I sure am. ;_;
Where were you when Brig is kill...again?
*Spoilers*
Even in death, The Brigadier is still Earth's greatest human champion :)
Finally something that wasn't immune to bullets.
Did the Brig just SHOOT Cthulhu? For the win?! Nice. ;)
“Sure. But I’m here, so.”
I wish they had done something similar to mark the passing of Elisabeth Sladen (Sarah Jane).
retnavybrat I agree. If they can use stupid Kate as a companion, why can't they use Luke, or the rest of the Bannerman Road gang?
And thus, The Brigadier kicked The Destroyer's ass back to Hades. ;)
It looks like the Brigadier got his wish about meeting a alien menace who was not immune to bullets.
why not just call a air strike with silver ammo?
You know how much a silver bomb costs? The taxpayers expect at least a little fiscal restraint!
Watch the whole episode, they had everything but silver lined up till the Doctor flippently said get some silver bullets so the Brig ordered some. They did have gold warheads for "You know what"
Cybermen?
Kelvin Nguyen Yes although the Brig didn't didn't want to say it for some reason.
"you stupid Stubborn thick headed numbskull you were supposed to die in bed"
I love that 😂
Yes, but it didn't become a full out war until sometime between the TV Movie and Rose
Incidentallly, DailyMotion has the full story for viewing including special effects enhancement. STILL a great story after all this time!
Unfortunately the actor died, and his death was written into the series (in "The Wedding of River Song").
The actor has passed away. Kate Stewart, the Brig's daughter whoappeared in The Power of Three, is reportedly in the 50th anniversary.
Flattery: Wait for me brigadier the Doctor
7th and ace: what in the whole universe multiverse was that
7th Doctor: Me but as an human inventor who built the Tardis and regeneration on earth.
Well done.
1:15 - The Brigadier, Harrison Ford-style.....
the destroyer looks like something from are you afraid of the dark
It feels so convenient that the "destroyer" weekness was a silver bullet that they mentioned In the first episode of that story...
Not bad for a final televised outing for the Brig on the main show. A shame Nick couldn't make it in time for any returns beyond Sarah Jane Adventures, though.
The Brigadier NEEDS to have at least a cameo in the 50th.
This is the Doctor's Seventh incarnation, he was never involved in the Time War. The Time War didn't come until sometime between Seven's regeneration into McGann and Eccleston's Doctor meeting Rose.
the time war started in 8's time
My favorite season
2:16 he did eventually
Howyaduing The Doctor probably knows attending his funeral. There's no way all Doctors can go to the same place without talking to each other.
