I am so relieved to have found this. Im a 23 year old girl who loves cars but I dont know everything and replacing my rear struts is one of the jobs I have to do with out anyone looking over my shoulder in case I mess up. I love the detail in your video, you answered many of my questions and also brought up topics I hadn't even thought of. Im happy to say now I feel confidant to do it myself. Thanks a lot!
Awesome teaching video!!!! I have an 05 Hyundai Elantra and have almost all the tools you have which show me I have to get a couple more things to do this myself. Thank you for showing this
Thanks for posting this, I just did my '04 Elantra and saved many dollars. I now know why you said "uh oh" when loosening the stabilizer bar link nut. None of mine would come off and I eventually bought a new link (11 bucks) and replaced the plastic one with a solid steel replacement on one side. To any others trying this, it's worth the extra bucks if you cant get the 14 mm nut off to just cut the bolt on the stabilizer bar and get the 11 dollar solid steel replacement.
thanks for this video it saved me 130.00 for labor to remove and replace rear struts. I had no problem with ft struts. we could not get to top bolts on rear struts. your video shows hot to remove rear seat panel to get to upper nuts. thanks again I owe you a cold one.
Thank you so much for this. I am faced with our Elantra hitting 200,000 miles and buying a new car or fixing whats wrong with it. This video has shown me that fixing the rear struts is not so bad. You really did help someone be proud!
Anyone using this guide, fair warning. This guide does multiple things that are unsafe. Most importantly, NEVER use anything other than hand tools (sockets) to compress the spring. It specifically warns against that practice in the Factory Service Manual because it can cause the compression tool to slip on the spring and will release the spring energy. Additionally, it is recommended to replace the soft parts (bellows and spring pads) because of the damage induced by weather (hot/cold cycles, water, dirt, etc). Finally it is recomended to replace all bolts/nuts (required for self locking), as they also become structurally compromised due to the repetitive loading (IE why you're replacing your strut) and environmental damage.
Nice video, thanks for sharing the knowledge! When I do my fronts I am also going to change the Strut Mounts (the bracket at the top with the 3 small nuts) after 150,000 miles of bumps.
Excellent Video. Nice camera work and lighting.. Easy to see everything you did. You explained and demonstrated everything needed to replace a rear strut and spring removal. Thanks..
Great video, I loved how you explained in detail about the lower rubber gasket that the spring sits on. Great job, I will be doing mine next weekend. Thanks for an inspiring video!
nice video.. I did one on rear today and your instruction made it real easy.. (would never have figured out the thing beside seat to remove).. car rides like new.. thanks and have a good day
FOR PEOPLE WHO NEED THE STABALIZER BAR LINK: Last night I ordered new quick struts and cv axels from A1 Auto for my 03 Elantra. I have replaced one front strut that failed but it's now time to do all of them as they all make noise. After reading the comments I was worried about stripping that stupid bolt. A1 Auto has the pair for $30 or all 4 for $37 and METAL not plastic like the one on rockauto. They also give all the instructions and one big thing I noticed was to loosen the stabilizer bolts while it's on the ground, so there is pressure on the bolts I'm guessing. So, I am going to brave it and hope I don't strip it by just trying to loosen them while the car is on the ground. I hope this helps. A1 Auto Sway Bar Link Part# 1ASFK01431
Hola, por lo de los de atrás como en este vídeo, ¿sabes si se quita el asiento de la misma manera en el elantra de 2005? El asiento de atrás me parece un poco diferente.
you think its the same on a 2002 elantra? and also, do elantra have shocks and struts or just springs and struts? becuase i think my rear suspension in going out and its 600 to fix struts and springs
I cannot get the hex nut off the control arm bolt. When I turn the nut it turns the bolt and there is no where to put a wrench on the bolt to hold it still while I turn the nut. Suggestions anyone? Thanks!
Actually yes it is the same as a Tiburon since it is the same rear suspension, but with disc brakes instead of drum brakes. Technically speaking all Tiburons have the same subframes as the Elantras do from 2001-2006. I know because I have a 2008 Tiburon. The odd thing is that even though the Elantra rear suspension was improved after 2007, the Tiburon still carried the same rear suspension components as the previous gen Elantra (2006 and prior) :-(
Man, I can NOT get that nut off of the stabilizer arm. It turns and has an incredibly thin nut on the opposite side that I can't keep from turning. I have a 2002 elantra. Anyone else have this problem or can offer any advice?
What I ended up doing was the stub that comes out of the control arm spins freely, so on the stub is a nut-looking thing that you have to hold onto just outside of the boot so you can turn the nut allowing you to remove that control arm. Well I ended up stripping that nut What I ended up doing is having to cut it off and removing the whole control arm to replace it as well. I havn't done this yet I am waiting to get the part shipped to me because AutoZone didn't appear to carry it (I have yet to go to the store itself but its online selection was crap) and Advanced Auto Parts (though they price match with Rock Auto) make you pay for shipping on orders under 75 dollars. What a load So I am having two new control arms sent to me, I found them at rockauto Stabilizer End Link is the name of the part you need 1015378 is the part number. Beck/Arnley makes it
This is great but Its missing a few 𝕂𝔼𝕐 𝔻𝔼𝕋𝔸𝕀𝕃𝕊!! -The control arm takes a 14mm box wrench to get off -BE VERY CAREFUL IT STRIPS VERY EASILY -If you end up not being able to remove the nut you have to cut the "Control Arm" off You should only really reach this point if you strip the bolt to the point of no return If or when you cut the bolt off keep in mind you still have to punch out the bolt that is remaining in the whole so it might be a good idea to have a hammer/pick The part you need to replace it with is called a Stabilizer End Link You can find it on RockAuto.com and its part # is 1015378 Cheapest I could find. It costed me around 40 dollars once all said and done.
I actually ended up cutting them off with a torch, but a set of small vice grips did the trick. But you got to really get them fuckers on there as tight as you possibley can
Jared H okay, thanks. I only did 1 side and had to cut it with my sawzall. I'll try the vicegrips when I do the other side. Wish me luck, and thanks again!
3 years later and your vid is still helping out. Thanks for the post. Not sure I would've found those interior seat bolts.
You, my friend , are a great teacher. You did not miss a thing. Thank you!!!
Nice to see that the old Elantra had independent rear suspension which no longer exists in modern version!!

Thanks for that video.. Steps were very easy an I wanna say thank you.. You also saved me a lot of money.. I'm a self motivated to fix my Elantra now.
Awesome teaching video!!!! I have an 05 Hyundai Elantra and have almost all the tools you have which show me I have to get a couple more things to do this myself. Thank you for showing this
Thank you for the video! The way I do struts is to leave one top bolt tight until all the lower bolts are out or lose.
Thanks for posting this, I just did my '04 Elantra and saved many dollars. I now know why you said "uh oh" when loosening the stabilizer bar link nut. Excellent video. The only thing I had never messed with in my entire life. Did them the other day without fear thanks to your video. Easy. Thank you

Awesome video!
Did you forget the rubber bump in the installation, or it wasn't needed? Great how to video, well done.
I reversed the process, put everything back the way I found it.
Great video!

Hola, por lo de los de atrás como en este vídeo, ¿sabes si se quita el asiento de la misma manera en el elantra de 2005? El asiento de atrás me parece un poco diferente.
a strut is a shock absorber and spring assembled together, strut.. otherwise it would be " replacing the shocks or springs. "
2 questions
1. Same process for 2002 Hyundai Sonata
2. and does the car need to be realign after
exelente! !! gracias
Very, very good.
But the video is easy as pi..well done
Hi guys how much is the price $ to replace those? Just the labor thanks.
Hey thanks alot. I will try this.
so if you don't mess with the alignment bar you don't necessarily have to do an alignment?
can i change it with some sport adjustabe shocks and struts
Great job
I love it. Thanks
How do I tell if I need to change the spring or strut mount on top ?
Must I get wheel alignment whenever after struts or shocks? Thanks
James Chuaycham ป้อม ศักดิ์ชัย i dont think so
Where do u get your mechanical tool
you think its the same on a 2002 elantra? and also, do elantra have shocks and struts or just springs and struts? becuase i think my rear suspension in going out and its 600 to fix struts and springs
It's not a rocker arm. It is Sway bar link
Wow, can't believe this. A how to video with no gay songs playing. Thank you, you made very good video, Where did you buy those spring holding things?
Hola mira no pude sacar el tornillo del estabilisador da buelta completo con todo y el tornillo con la tuerca como le puedo hacer
don't you think that u should replace the sings also, it's quite possible they have been deadened. that would put more stress on the shock absorber.
fkn auto text. misspelled springs
Thank you
I cannot get the hex nut off the control arm bolt. When I turn the nut it turns the bolt and there is no where to put a wrench on the bolt to hold it still while I turn the nut. Suggestions anyone? Thanks!
I'm having the same problem. I'm probably going to have to drill it out and replace it.
what part of the video?
Thanks!!!
I just did this process! But now I have no breaks any reason ?!?! ( 2002 ) Hyundai Elantra !!
is it the same on the Tiburon 2006
Probable not.
Actually yes it is the same as a Tiburon since it is the same rear suspension, but with disc brakes instead of drum brakes. Technically speaking all Tiburons have the same subframes as the Elantras do from 2001-2006. I know because I have a 2008 Tiburon.

An alan wrench is needed to keep the bolt from turning while you remove the nut.
OKay

Stabilizer End Link is the name of the part you need
1015378 is the part number. Beck/Arnley makes it
+Jared H I've only done 1 side, but I cut through it with my Sawzall and replaced the sway bar. autozone had them for $11 a piece and by next day.
+G Stewart hmm...I couldn't locate anywhere to use an allen wrench...I still have to do the other side though. where is it exactly?
does this work for 1999 elantra?
Not Sure.... Sorry
lhave the same proplem
This is great but Its missing a few 𝕂𝔼𝕐 𝔻𝔼𝕋𝔸𝕀𝕃𝕊!!
-The control arm takes a 14mm box wrench to get off
-BE VERY CAREFUL IT STRIPS VERY EASILY
-If you end up not being able to remove the nut you have to cut the "Control Arm" off
You should only really reach this point if you strip the bolt to the point of no return
If or when you cut the bolt off keep in mind you still have to punch out the bolt that is remaining in the whole so it might be a good idea to have a hammer/pick
The part you need to replace it with is called a Stabilizer End Link
You can find it on RockAuto.com and its part # is 1015378
Cheapest I could find. It costed me around 40 dollars once all said and done.
what did you use to grasp the nut to keep it from stripping?

Jared H okay, thanks. I only did 1 side and had to cut it with my sawzall. I'll try the vicegrips when I do the other side. Wish me luck, and thanks again!
What is this control arm bolt? what part of the video?
AFAIK it's just struts.
