JJ was one of the most prolific, and underrated talents in R&R history, a true Virtuoso, & incredibly humble genius! I hope someday soon someone makes a movie about JJ's life & all his contributions to his beloved Rock & Roll!
I was first time at sea , aged 19 , mid Atlantic , learning the ropes . Earlier that day , had a big run in with an tough older cockney lad . Went up to apologise , because i thought i was wrong , he sat me down in his "house" (cabin). Made me a massive joint , or whatever you call it , out of hashish . Took a big drag , he put on Troubadour album (1977 this was ) , and i have been hooked on JJ ever since......chill
J.J. starts playing and keeps on playing he's like clockwork..... I mean I've seen a lot of music in my life , yeah but definitely I can see that he was a trueborn engineer and it showed up in his guitar picking Like A Clockwork turning, striking.... yeah that's the best way I can describe it like standing close to a grandfather clock and listen to everything clicking and turning right on time . I know that he loved Christine, she was a part of his sound , now that's a good woman .
I discovered JJ around 1983 with City Girls which we covered with “For Sale” back in Sweden. I had an opportunity to interview him for Westside News, Los Angeles, in 1993 during a Luna Park concert but he told me that was a small station and he declined. Intimacy, perfection, guts, sincerity, are a few code words that might caracterize JJ:s output. Thank you, JJ.
David Gower (an English cricketer) always reminded me of JJ Cale....the quote from one cricket commentator opined that "Gower is so laid back he's in danger of falling over"..... JJ Cale to a tee !
One of my favorite “humble” super stars and great to listen to.
Saw him 5 or 6 times. Met him a few. What a great music hero guitar master, engineer and songwriter. He is the best I ever saw.
You had luck. I have never seen this fantastic musician live on stage. That's a little bit sad.
