Such a great man. Met him outside the Bottom Line in NYC in the 90’s. I ran into Rock Frisco, his keyboard player on the street, and I told him I loved JJ. He went in the bus, parked nearby, and asked him to come out-he did. Shook my hand, as gentle as ever, and we chatted for a quick minute. Went in to the show later which was amazing. RIP JJ.
I fell in love with JJ’s music when “Naturally” came out, but lost track of him for a while. When Clapton recorded “Cocaine” I learned JJ had written it, and it brought me back around to Cale’s other albums and I’ve never stopped listening to him since then. Yes, Eric brought him into the mainstream, but his songs were so good that I have to believe the SOMEbody would have popularized him sooner or later.
What a beautiful individual and musician. The profound sense of gratitude he expresses for having that Clapton's hit is truly striking. It's as if you can envision the rugged and challenging path his elder years might have taken without it. An american jewel. R.I.P, Mr. J.J. Cale!
He created his own unique, inimitable style. There's no one quite like J.J Cale. The most laidback sound out there. It was like hearing a new kind of music to become acquainted with his songs. A joy and kind of a revelation. "Muddy" maybe, but the lotus blooms pure in the muddy swamps.
When I was at Colorado State University, I met a group of guys born and raised in Oklahoma. Some were going to school there and a few others just moved there to be with their buddies and work in a different state. They all shared many of the qualities JJ Cale had - honest, insightful, humble and a dry sense of humor. I'm a big fan of JJ and my buddies from OK.
All of my rock and country music musician friends are well aware of this man, but a lot of casual fans only know his songs, typically through Eric Clapton, Lynyrd Skynyrd, etc. What a humble, talented man he was. He was like a cross between a contractor, remodeling your bathroom, and a brilliant poet!
JJ Cale, there was no one like him. ❤ Eric Clapton loved him.❤ All music of great artistic merit matters of all genras. Don't miss out on what art means. It flows with one's heart beating.
I have now truly become acquainted with JJ Cale- I have fallen in love with all of his music & he is right up there with Eric Clapton in my opinion- I never get tired of listening to or hearing either of them!!! JJ Cale seems so laid back- but he says he was never laid back- he stayed a nervous wreck according to him!!! He was & always will be MR> "COOL" & "LAID BACK"!!! RIP JJ

I was sitting in a jail cell when I heard a song called "call me a doctor" ( I was seen buying some reefer as JJ calls it) in 1970 or 71 cant remember One of the first time he was ever played on radio I know cause I been in that jail listening long enough to know the Natural album his first was just released I was 20 yr old.Anyway I was so knocked out I wanted to try and bust out lol I had to hear that album badly. It has been my absolute favorite album all these years thats addicting as you say. In fact I just bought a cd from amazon with 50 of his best ( I could have added a few)songs on it and ready to start being addicted all over again. I litterally lost my legs when I heard he passed. It was awfull as I'm sure you know.

I discovered JJ after I got involved in radio over 30 years ago. I grew up listening to college radio & some of the corporate radio stations, which were not what they are nowadays....monotonous repetition of the same old 1200 songs, or music lacking depth. Even when listening to college radio (in NYC radius) I do not recall hearing JJ Cale. It is only when I got involved with an NPR affiliate radio station did I become knowledgeable of his music, and 'boy' did he catch my ears, especially since I was so into electric guitar. He always had a simple style but with individuality & definition, almost like in the style of Harvey Mandel, but only because of the individuality and simplicity; or maybe low-key is a better terminology, not aggressive in their picking styles, yet well-defined. There was always something about the simplicity of this man's style that grabbed me, plus the genius that emanated from his music. They just don't make them like this anymore, and even if they did, JJ was as individual as they come, never to be duplicated....as can be said about many true artisans! I never knew him personally, but through his music I am confident I knew him well and can say....he was a wonderful soul.
I really came on to like JJ cale's music when #8 came out on vynal....I sat down and listened to #8 ...it will probably be my favorite JJ Cale record it's the first one that I really got into and still to this day I just can't get enough of it..also grasshopper.......and the album that he cut with Eric Clapton towards the end that's really good!!!

Great story. Americans didn't want to come to Europe often, unless they were huge mainstream stars... J.J. was more low-key, he didn't seek much fame. That's why he avoided touring too much outside American border. Good for him I guess. Me, as an European, would love to have an opportunity to see him live. No longer possible, though. Lol - talk about how a musician can make some kind of a living off 1 good hit - long story short, I got to meet Jimmy Driftwood one time, way long ago. If I remember correctly, he got a hit with his lyrics "in 1814 we took a little trip..." - off that one hit he bought a little ranchette down in Arkansas and settled down. It wasn't fancy but it was nice and comfortable. Heckuva nice guy, his wife, too.

Two words, among many others for him : authenticity and talent. The first one is rare, the second one less, but both together : very rare !
I don't have words to express what I think of JJ style and overall attitude. Simple guy but pretty complex...great interview.
26 years ago, this interview. He was a simple straight up and down kinda guy, no tripping over an ego. It can be tough being a song writer.
"I'm really a nervous jerk". I just love that guy.

No ,he is a World Treasure
I think more Europeans bought his albums then Americans, I'm one of them
It's a pitty that JJ Cale never liked to travel with airplanes, that's the reason he don't become a much bigger Star,he was and is loved in Europe

Page Diogenes! I think we've found an honest man!!
Many killer musicians from OKlahoma. JJ Cale and Leon Russell probably the most well known
When I met JJ in the early 90s I didn't know who he was...missed my chance
Well, you met him... Still more than can be said for most of us. I wasn't even born yet at that time... :)
