Pure Harrison is a compilation album that seeks to provide the definitive overview of Harrison’s solo career. Inspired by 2016’s Pure McCartney, Pure Harrison is a carefully structured selection of tracks split across six vinyl sides. It is roughly the length of the standard and vinyl versions of Pure McCartney.
Intended to give the listener a complete picture of Harrison as an artist, the compilation attempts to pull equally from every stage of George’s career. Previous efforts to compile George’s work have been severely lacking. “The Best of George Harrison”, released in 1976, dedicated a whole album side to George’s Beatles work. “Best of Dark Horse 1976-1989”, while notable for being curated by George himself, again only focuses on part of his career.
“Let It Roll”, released in 2009, includes a number of baffling decisions. Though the album claims to focus on hits, there are several notable exclusions - Bangla Desh, Dark Horse, You, This Song, Crackerbox Palace, and Love Comes To Everyone are nowhere to be found. Four of George’s albums aren’t even represented on the compilation. Live versions of Beatles tracks are included where solo songs could’ve had a chance to shine.
Pure Harrison rectifies the oversights of the previous compilations, providing a great starting-off point for someone interested in George’s music and career.
