About this video.
My first try with Ilford SFX 200 and printing on various papers.
I went to Newtown Creek to take a few photographs on SFX200 and O also took a roll of Ortho Plus.
I only shot a couple of scenes with intentions of bracketing my film as I didn't use a light meter with the pinhole camera. Kind of winged it using the sunny 16 rule for pinhole.
Still, I managed to get a few nice negs to print.
SHOUT OUTS
Thanks to @Volodymyr_demkiv for the paper

Great stuff, very help full too. thanks
Cheers Ian
Thanks for the motivation. I ordered 5 roll of SFX 200 in 35mm. Looking forward to trying it :-)
Great video. Thanks for showing your process and talking it through.
Glad you enjoyed it!
It's funny where your darkroom has progressed too.
Great video too.
Season's Greetings to you and yours. Enjoyed all the vlogs and looking forwards to more.
Happy New Years from California Rodger!
Cheers Andrew. Happy new year 🌻
Merry Christmas to you and your family,....and all the other who are watching this channel
Roger, you have redefined the term ‘Hipster.’ You are hugely watchable and take me back to the time I had my own darkroom. Nice one Mate!
Thanks Tad!
Another informative video. Thanks and Happy Christmas to you and your family. Looking forward to 2020 and all you have to offer us. Highly recommend everyone support Shoot Film Like a Boss. Best value on UA-cam.
Very merry christmas to you and your family. Thank's for your contribution to life.
Thank you for all the job and effort you are putting into creating such inspiring videos for film enthousiasts !
Haven’t done any printing for about twenty years, but the Ilford warm tone paper used to give nice results with ID-78 developer. As far as I am aware this developer was never available as a packaged product, only as a published formula, and you had to make it up yourself.
Great learnings and great shots! Thanks
Fantastic editing and production this week! Merry Christmas!
Difference between a normal red filter that you have and IR filter is that IR filters try to block light below certain nm range. Normal red filters let all light through. IR filters are super dark.
Yes Janna, I'm starting to learn this. Thanks for the info👍
Very inspiring your developing work! Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year full of nice prints!
you had a SHAVE for Christmas ! Anyway -- I'm short on HAIR on top myself -- Have a Great Festive Season and keep well in 2020!
😂😂
Keep well too Mr Elgar :-)
You’d make an inspiring teacher. Thanks, and Happy Christmas.
Nice work .. I enjoyed you video. Thanks for sharing .
Loved the vlog... Love B&W and those prints where rather special :-) Merry Christmas and a Fabulous productive New Year ! Cheers :-)

Cheers Gianni!
Merry Christmas to you and yours Roger! Thanks for all the awesome videos and look forward to seeing what you are up to in 2020.
Another great video, Roger! I so enjoy your channel. Merry Christmas to you and your family.
I have to admit I am a sucker for contrasty film never shot SFX another film I tempted to go and have a go with lol 😂 thanks for showing us what it’s like 👍🏻
Great video! SFX200 seems to be worth for a try! Thx for your outstanding videos in 2019 and have great Christmas holidays!
Happy Christmas Roger and Family
I've used the SFX with an R72 filter and 5 stops of compensation myself. Loved the results! It's much brighter and less grainy than the Rollei Infrared.
Merry christmas from ARGENTINA Youe videos are very simpatic and very helpfull
Very interesting video thanks and happy Christmas :-)
Refreshing to watch good, down to earth videos like yours Roger. Yes you'll find MUCH extended exposure times with a true IR filter compared to your R2! Never tried SFX with that so I'll be interested to see how it performs, probably best left til spring/summer when there is leaf on the trees. Many years ago I used to shoot IR Ektachrome which was fun but highly unpredictable. I believe it was used extensively in wartime aerial photography, as dead branches/leaves placed over tanks and buildings would stand out from living foliage. All the best to you.
Interesting Alan. Cheers. Gotta get me a R25 or darker.
It behaves very much like true IR film just to a lesser degree. With an R72 (IR720) filter meter your scene at ISO 3 and off you go.

Merry Christmas Maestro. Best wishes from Spain.
Merry Christmas Roger.
Happy Christmas Roger👍
Really really good video Roger, makes me really want to get my darkroom up and running.
If you got a bathroom Paul get cracking. You'll love it.
Merry Christmas Roger, great video
Cheers Rob
Really nice video. So much helpful info. I want a pinhole camera after watching you dove all into it. Thank you for the great content.
I love shooting it. The element of surprise is more so as you can really guestimate your compositions , cheers mate
Merry Christmas from New York. I’ve got a Newtown Creek nearby as well ! You are a master in the darkroom. Beautiful print!
Thanks mate.
👍Magic as usual...Just picked up an enlarger (Kaiser VPM System V Multigrade) so one step nearer the darkroom setup. 😊
HOW ON EARTH DID I MISS THIS??!!!!
By deep red they mean a filter that blocks almost all visible light. Infra-red pass through filters look black when you try and hold them up to your eye and will only let through light below a certain wavelength and will give you the look that you were talking about. It will be many stops of sensitivity reduction and if you're shooting on a camera with a lens you'll have to adjust your focus point (the red dot on most older lenses).
Ahhhh.... Thanks!👍
Would it work to put the filter in front of your light meter to calculate the exposure?
Thanks for the info Roger. I have been using masking tape too, the better quality blue stuff, but I thought it would lose its adhesion in time. Ok if you want to change the prints though. One problem I have is that my prints always develop wrinkles or kinks even if they are flat when I frame them. This is on RC paper. The problem is worse if they get warm. Your prints always look very good and you make it look so easy!
They can wrinkle over time. For best results (for your own home or hobby) is to buy self adhesive mount board and stick the print to it. Takes a bit of getting used to but keeps the print flat on free from wrinkles when framed. Of course, you wouldn't want to do this with an expensive print...
Merry Christmas! For infrared shots use R72 filter (72 for 720nm)
Cheers Jean!
LOL "It's in Russian!." Have a great Christmas there :)
Brilliant pinhole shots Roger. My enlarger uses a filament bulb (regular light globe), and I find if I do 6 x 1 sec pops for a test strip it doesn't mean the same amount of exposure as 6 secs continuous. I assume this is to do with warm up time of the bulb. To measure my test strips more accurately I find I am better off setting the enlarger timer to 6 seconds and then moving the paper each second to expose the strip. I expect better enlargers don't have this issue, mine is a cheap and cheerful one :)
Matt, take a look at this: www.jbhphoto.com/articles/indeterminacy-effect/ for an explanation of what's happening with your exposures.
Have more of this in the fridge, shot the Rolli with 35mm the SFX is in 120 probably will shoot it with the Mamyia 645.
I really enjoy your videos Roger. You are the only UA-camr who shows conventional darkroom techniques and I admire your dedication and experimentation.
May I ask what tape you use to secure your prints when framing? Also what tape do you use to seal the back of the frame? I have used gummed tape that you have to wet, but find that it dries out and comes unstuck.
Best wishes for 2020.
Thanks. I actually use just decorators masking tape. If I ever sell a framed print it goes off the the framers. But for home I just buy frames and Matt myself. And usually change the prints over a few times a year.
Your videos are great, they make me want to shoot and print.
Which Is the Pinhole camera you used?
Thanks Pablo. I use the Ranica 66 and Lerouge 66.
If you are doing any enlarging and want to get a good idea of exposure, especially if you have the lens stopped down to f8 or f11 to give (usually) the best optical/lens results and with enough time to do some careful dodging or burning, use this technique to create a test strip for contacts or enlargements but with a slight difference. Make your timings in this sequence 2 + 2 + 4 + 8 + 16. This will give you TOTALS of 2 + 4 + 8 + 16 + 32 seconds, which makes them one f stop apart.
You're referring to Gene Nocons f stop method John?
@@ShootFilmLikeaBoss I did Photography at Uni in the early 80's and was taught it there, although it seemed to be a common practice with other photographers I knew at the time. I moved from photography to flogging Apple Macs (I still do) about 86 but I remember the name Gene Nocon. Pretty sure he didn't invent it as the library at Uni had several old books that described it to the level I have. A Google search reveals his book came out in 1987 but I never read it.
@@johnblagden5625 Interesting John. I used to use f stop printing for some time but I slipped out of the habit. Its a good method.
very interesting and informative video as usual Roger.
with the pinhole camera, how do you compose the image with no viewfinder?
best wishes at Crimbo!
Cheers Paul. It's just pointing it in the right direction. Best part is seeing the negs and how well you composed the shot. Sometimes good, sometimes bad, sometimes nailed it.
Merry Christmas
Enjoyed the video using the SFX 200. The prints that you made are they going to be for sale.
Thank you. Mark, Calif.
Yes I'll be adding them to my website soon. shootfilmlikeaboss.com
Merry Christmas Roger - great channel. A quick darkroom tech question - I noticed you are reusing your paper developer, can you share any more detail on that (what developer, how many reuses, etc) please? I am currently using Dektol 1:2 one shot dillution, but pour it out after each session. Many thanks!
This may help Toni. ua-cam.com/video/q9GlgC1Hv_k/v-deo.html
I know this is a couple years late but.... Street Photography is traditionally people on the street. People are the subject. Townscapes or cityscapes are simply buildings in town or city. People can be present, but they are not the subject. The buildings are the subject. Cheers!
Interesting topic Ron. Street Photography is generally associated with people, agreed. I was recently in Bahrain. Walking the streets. Some photographs had people in, some did not and I took photographs of decayed shops and signs and back alleys, street pigeons and the general feel for where I was. To me it was all street photography. I also took "Portraits" of people I thought looked interesting, with their permission. Is that Street Portraiture? Or Street Photography? Interesting thought. *edited* After a read up it's classed as Urban!
@@ShootFilmLikeaBoss my understanding is that when I take a photo of someone in public, with their permission, it’s considered a “Street Portrait“. Random people living and doing without noticing me is true “street photography”. I also do both. Ona side note: When you ask people nicely, they almost always say yes. :). 🍻
@@RonEMarks or you compliment them "hey great hat/beard" I found that works also.
Watching you in the darkroom is like watching a baby being born.
Where do you order Kentemere paper from ? Seems like i cant find it here in Sweden...
I order it from a website called "first call photographic" here in the UK.
Have you used colour film with your 35mm/pinhole photography?
No Anthony. I've not shot any colour film yet.
Don't wanna bother you, but can you tell me what's happened at 8.30? The grey stripe, I mean.
All the best for you mate. I respect your work and your passion. Have a good, merry christmas :)
Piotrek Grzesiak he was highlighting the film edge..
@@zapallalla Thank you. Wasn't so sure about that.
Yeah I didn't want anyone thinking I was looking at the image. I was testing just the film rebate 👍
Hi, short question. Why does my Mamiya 7ii show "normal" exposures to shoot with the infrared 645 filter and everybody suggests to shoot 1s exposure?
Hey Roman. I've never used that filter or any iR filter. . A man to ask is Steve Onions. He shoots iR a lot.
@@ShootFilmLikeaBoss thanks!!!
