I own a F80 amongst all my manual focus cameras and what I like most about it is the fact that I can use all my "G" lenses from my digital Nikons as well. Being able to use the Tamron SP 45mm with image stabilization for shooting film at night time comes in really handy ;)

I have two Nikon F4 which I used as my daily shooters for a numbers of years. The autofocus is slow but I didn’t use it in that mode very often. Most of my lenses are manual focus primes anyway. I considered buying an F100 back when they were still being sold new but I didn’t like messing around with the ergonomics of the camera so I passed on it.
These days when I shoot I alternate between digital and film depending on what mood I’m in. I enjoy using the light meter located between my ears to estimate exposures and then checking with my hand held meter or just taking the shoot in manual mode on my DSLR.

I love my F100 and default to it, even though I have FM, FE, F2 and F3 Nikons. I haven’t noticed the issues you spotted but I shoot digital with a D810 which has much the same controls so I am used to the interface. I am very careful how I close the back as the F100 has a fragile latch, I gently close it rather than let it slam shut. The F100 metering system is superb and still up there with the best.

    My friend had a f100.
    I have a F75 N75 in the US.
    Great lightweight auto fucus.
    The F100 was more robust.
I use all my Ais and Af lenses on my f75.
My favourite Nikon cameras are my Nikon FE with a 55mm 2.8 Micro Nikkor and the huge black Nikkormat ft2 with a 50mm f2 lens.
Great shots. Great Video. I am subscribed
I am 75 and live in a 1 bed flat with a windowless bathroom darkroom equipped with a Gnome Alpha Rangefinder condenser enlarger plus a Schneider Componon S 5.6 100mm lens, and a Schneider Componon S f4 enlarger lens.

It is really hard to get something in nice condition from japan. Sometimes when a seller says the optics are great but the pictures show fungus, you know it is getting tough. It needs days to get something good. Everything is marked Ex++++++++++++++ or mint/near mint,...but most of them are trash. I bouhgt my F100 in March 2005 used and still love it. I also use the Datalink to get the shooting data.

I feel you. I bought what I thought was a great deal on a Nikon F5 from a Facebook buy/sell group in the low $200s USD w/ NiMH AA batteries and charger. It arrived, and the viewfinder didn't work due to a nice dent in the top, despite the seller claiming that her daughter had just used it. Throwing caution to the wind before buying a replacement viewfinder, I took this one apart and knocked the dent out w/ a block of wood and a mallet, and sure enough, it was the dent shorting against the light meter/display circuit. Now it shoots like a champ, but holy crap is it a heavy tank. The 50mm f/1.4D is tolerable, but shooting a 70-200mm f/2.8 G-type lens is beastly! Forget more modern E-diaphragm type glass unless you just shoot it wide open. I'd love something the size of the F100 instead, and in a perfect world, compatible w/ newer glass.

Got my F100 from Japan, as Yes the back of the camera did should that whitish condition, as I clean it with film cleaner, and then use my Heavy Duty Sharpie pen, as the color return, and I use Lighter Fluid to remove the sticky residue as it clean it right off, and then got myself the MB Grip for it, as it is working, and I have two Nikkor AF zooms, the 24~50, and the 28~85mm, and it seems to work that got to shoot one roll, and it came out well... Thank you for your review..

My F100 doesn’t have such a hair trigger, it’s identical to my Nikon dslr shutter. My F100 was sticky on the back, but some time and alcohol wipes fixed that. The F100 Custom menu is really cool and fun to go through and set up also.
    Cheers!

  • @anthonymiller8979
    @anthonymiller8979 3 роки тому

You mention the hair trigger shutter button being an issue when you want to change aperture or shutter speeds. On my F100 I can just toggle the on/off switch to the light position, or tap the AF On button to activate the display and then both control wheels are also activated at the same time and you can change shutter or aperture. Eliminates having to half press the shutter if you are worried about making an unwanted exposure.

Happy belated birthday! I can imagine that your birthday wasn't so happy when you received your faulty F100. Two years I bought one and - thank God- the camera worked great. It did also show a sticky surface. I solved the problem by using "Ballistol" gun oil and some talc. I love this camera because I can use my Nikon G lenses as well. The trigger is less sensitive. An alternative may be a Nikon 90x.

    • @AzrielKnight

    • @odukar2315
      @odukar2315 3 роки тому

@@AzrielKnight In the past I tried alcohol or other dissolvers too. In the end, I destroyed the surface and the result was irreversible poor. Gun oil (Ballistol) contains medicinal grade mineral oil, alkaline salts of oleic acid, several alcohols, Benzyl Acetate and, oil from vegetal seeds. The mineral oil is unchlorinated and conforms to the specifications of US Pharmacopeia XX. Finally, the surface recovered and with the talc added, the surface got smooth and not glossy. Guns are very high precise machines, as a camera!

Just picked up an F100 on eBay but I asked a lot of questions as I have had 2 previous F100s that were not great. First one bought at a local shop with a busted diopter and the window was flopping around. The second one from Japan had a bad dust issue beyond the focus screen. Hopefully third time is a charm. I just want to love this camera and was willing to pay for a solid copy. My F80 needs a buddy.

I originally got my F100 so I'd have a 35mm film camera that was fully compatible with all my modern Nikon DSLR lenses. It worked quite well for that, until it decided to stop rewinding film at the end of the roll. I should probably get it fixed, but it seems like replacement would cost about the same as repair. As such, I used it as an excuse to just go for an F6. Being able to share glass between film and digital cameras is extremely nice, especially if I simply want to test something out before going out to actually shoot.

I have more Nikon bodies than is good for me. About 25 years ago I bought a FM, it was secondhand, as are all of my Nikon cameras. I then started collecting, most were bought cheaply, mainly from collector’s fairs and EBay, a couple were actually given to me. I was a collector more than a photographer, but I did use them until I had to give up about ten years ago due to failing eyesight, and put all of my cameras into store. With slight improvement in eyes I have recently got them out again. I have only one professional body, an F in almost mint condition for which I think I paid about £75 with 50 mm f:1.4. In the mid tear I have Nikkormats FT, FTn, FT2, FT3 and EL. Nikon EL2, FM, FE, FM10, FE10 and F90x. From the bottom tier I have the EM, FG, FG20, F301 and F501. I also have a Df which probably cost more than all of the others combined, and a Nikon 1 J1. Also have some Russian rangefinders an a couple of large format cameras, a Pacemaker Speed Graphic and an old MPP monorail. I forgot a Graphlex 5x4 SLR, have only ever taken a couple of shots with that, very awkward thing to use, but an interesting collector’s piece. At the moment I’m testing all of the cameras to check that they work, and which are the easiest to use with my very poor eyesight. One Nikon I regret not owning is the FM3a, but that is beyond my price range. In a couple of years when I have decided which cameras I want to keep I will dispose of the others, probably to young people starting out in photography, who seem to be the main group shooting on film these days.
A few weeks ago I was shopping at Redhill market, south of London, and not far from where I live. I saw a group of four teenagers who I correctly guessed were students from the local college; they were obviously out on a fashion shoot. They were the photographer, assistant, model and makeup artist. They weren’t actually shooting at the time, the model was sitting on a large equipment case eating her lunch, the makeup artist was pestering her to hurry in and get ready, the assistant was doing assistant type things with the equipment and the photographer was doing nothing, just waiting for the others, so I spoke to her. They were using a RB67, shooting on Portra 400 and 800 and Tri-x and had at least four 5-packs of film. Very professional looking setup. Photographer said the RB67 was her camera of choice but the college only had one and that was often out; the one they were using was her own, a gift from her parents. Most of the other equipment belonged to the college. A lot of young people seem to be shooting medium format these days.

Wow, cameras really got a lot of plastic in them with the transition to digital. Most cameras from the late 60s - early 90s were heavy metal. I was surprised to see NIKON go to such a plastic camera as they were known as the Pro-choice along with a Pro price with advanced features compared to the consumer cameras. My 35mm Collection consists mostly of Konica Auto T models cause of the quality built and lens glass. Like you, I ordered the Konica 57mm 1.4 lenses so I could have all that glass showing sitting on the camera compared to the 1.8. The Canon AE-1 was a popular camera in the early 80s by the military, used them in the Navy. Lot more brands to choose from and zooms were the must add lens after the normal lens that came with the camera. My choice of used cameras to buy is the Minolta Maxxum with AF lenses that I can use on my Sony A-55 SLT digital "A" mount lenses that I still use to this day. Love to see you do a review on the Minolta Maxxum line as there are so many models to choose from
and very affordable as used cameras on E-Bay with a lot of advanced features and like almost new with modern design.

I use an N80/F80 for it's lens compatibility and price. I use AF-S G lenses on mine that carry over into digital Nikon with no problem. I know the N80 supports back button focus, which I have on on mine. I'm not sure if the N80, or my particular camera, has the issue where it doesn't want to change settings unless you wake it up like your F100 has, but turning on back button focus would help so that you have one button to wake or focus and the other button for the shutter, since the shutter is so sensitive. There is also the F80S model that has a data back that prints camera settings between frames.

I've never tried F100; back in the day, I had to make a decision - either i go autofocus with the F90x, or I switch the system and do the Canon EOS 5 route. Canon was significantly cheaper and much more advanced at the time, so it was kinda no brainer, despite Nikon's better build quality. That being said, that same EOS 5 is still alive, despite the fact that camera followed me trough three wars.
Now, it's not so hard to manually focus (unless you are shooting sports) if you use the SLR camera with really, REALLY bright focussing screen, that does NOT have semi-transparent mirror for metering. Something like Nikon FM / FM2 or Olympus OM1 / OM1n comes to mind...

Hi. I caught the film bug and 1 month ago stuck gold. I found a very good condition used F100 at my local camera store and it was around half as much as most seem to be going for on ebay. As for your meter timing out, I've experienced that as well. The time out can be changed in the custom menu: CSM 15 Meter on length - 15-4 = 4 seconds*, 15-6 = 6 seconds (default), 15-8 = 8 seconds, 15-16 = 16 seconds. Also, I use a button on the back of the camera to focus instead of half pressing the shutter button. This along with the exposure compensation button on the top behind the shutter button will turn on the meter so you can stay away from the shutter button. I'm coming from a Nikon D90 and even though many of the controls are in a different location on my F100 there's still a strong sense of familiarity and family. I'm very happy with my F100 and as a bonus I can use all of my existing lenses from my D90. It's regretable that you wound up with a less than ideal example of an F100. Btw, nice video and great pics. Cheers.

3:40 Just ordered one for my birthday too :P, I'm just changing schools and going to do study photography and I have to get an analog camera too so I went for a used F100 in very good condition /almost new with a battery grip for €256. I thought it was a very good deal for this camera and I hope it will be worth it, i'm pretty much totally new to film photography, but since I own already a small collection of Nikon bodys/lenses it is pretty easy that I can use all my lenses on both the digital cameras and the f100

I have to say I like my F100’s handling. The manual is not too big so it’s an easy read. Clear and concise. Bracketing catches me too. But mostly on my Oly OM cameras. Anyway I have lost all respect for buying from Japan on eBay. Never is it as described....

To be fair, my Pentax 6x7 was a Japan purchase and it's one of the most amazing cameras I've ever used in terms of quality. I got my 200mm f4 as well and it is just as great. This was the first bad buy from there for me and they're still silent, pretty sad.

I'm happy, I went with a Canon EOS 1N as the upgrade from my Rebel and T70. My first roll put through it had several slightly underexposed frames for some reason, it does look like the better choice compared to the Nikon F100 though, but perhaps that's just me. I am considering another SLR with 1/8000 shutter speed - the Leica R8, but I'm not convinced, it's the best of ideas, as the price range for lenses is a bit of a challenge...
As far as AF goes, I don't really use it on film cameras - except for my Konica Hexar AF, and I have had focus problems a few times with that particular camera. That being said, I'm still happy with it - and it doesn't hurt, that the Canon EOS 1N and the Konica Hexar AF uses the same battery type.

The F100 is a baby F5. A lot of the same features but lighter. Personally I like the F4 (slow autofocus, but for all functions you have dedicated buttons. Own one, like it a lot. Recently acquired a F6 second hand from eBay Japan. Good condition and a blast to photograph with. F4 has the advantage that it does matrix metering with manual lenses. F6 can do it also but has to be adapted by Nikon services. With the discontinue of the F6 I am not sure if Nikon services does have the parts to change it. Film suggestion: Silbersalz35. It’s a repackaged Kodak vision 3 movie film. You buy not only the film but also the development with the right chemicals and they scan the film with a motion picture film scanner. You will receive by email Jpg’s and a 16bit (Raw) format. an option is the received the development film in one roll.

If you want something a little simpler but with AF and the ability to use the newer Nikon lenses, the Nikon N80 might fit the bill. I've bought two, one for $50 and one for $30. Great camera for what it is. I took it to Alaska a few years back along with a fancy D750. The N80 was an impulse buy since I didn't know when I might be in Alaska again and figured I might as well see what modern film was like (I hadn't shot film at that point since the early 2000's). At any rate, it worked fantastically well and essentially all my favorite shots were on film. It's what got me hooked on film again arguably.
The N80 isn't my favorite body (my favorite film SLR is my trusty Minolta X-700 since it's the same camera I used back in high school), but sure does get the job done when I want to use my Nikon glass. I don't know how it compares to the F-100 though. But it's certainly a workhorse.

I have the F100 and to me it is too large. Also sticky. Rubbing the sticky areas with rubbing alcohol helps get rid of the problem. I bought the F90 (N90?) later as I did want an auto focus Nikon, but one smaller in size. Same stickiness issues as the F100, but It is by far my preferred one of the two. Many similar features, but not too many to make you wonder what the hell you are doing! Peace of advice from someone who doesn't read manuals until after using the camera - watch UA-cam videos. I learned a lot about both cameras that way to get the overview and some refinements, then the manual. The advantage of the F100 is that it readily takes G lenses.

Super bummer about your F100. Two years ago I sold my FE and FE2 to buy a mint F100 with 50mm 1.8D. I loved my FE and it's simplicity however the F100 is my daily shooter and my perfect portrait 35mm. It's got way more functionality than I need 90% of the time but there is something comforting about having it there incase I ever chose to use it. After I bout it I tried really not to like it by picking up an F4 and an F3 and still the F100 is what I prefer. If you're looking at other Nikon autofocus SLR's the N80 and 90 are pretty similar but I find the electronics to be less reliable and the F100 to be more rugged. Conversely there's the F5 and 6 but they are way to much camera and impractical in 2020.

The F100 has been so underpriced in the used and & ebay market in the last few years that shopping the cheapest unit you can find is probably penny wise, pound foolish. I do not shot that much 35mm any more but I have many Nikon lenses. I upgraded from an 8008S to an F100 about a decade ago. I like it so much that I bought a second body in minty condition to put away in case the first one fails. The F100 is as close to the perfect 35mm SLR as I have used.
