- GoodFellas Jimmy Conway "Dead Stare"
James "Jimmy" Conway is a fictional character in the film Goodfellas played by Robert De Niro. The character was based on real-life gangster Jimmy Burke. The real-life Jimmy Burke's mother's name was Conway and the filmmakers were not allowed to use the Burke name, as Burke was still alive, and so Scorsese used Conway.
There are others at the extreme periphery of the mob including Morris 'Morrie' Kessler (Chuck Low) who furnishes comic relief right up to the point calculating Jimmy Conway decides to rub Kessler out rather than pay Kessler his share of the Luftansa heist.
This scene undid 40 years of anti smoking ads within 25 seconds. Amazing.
The times when people smoked anywhere.
I miss smoking in planes. Those were glorious times.
And sold a lot of Cream CD's!
dude this is the main reason i started smoking
put the headphones in
play cream
and just stare at something
I can hear little Scorsese jumping up and down yelling .. put creme in the there!
What?
Just write down .. CREME, Yah ckscker!!
They turned a love song into a haunting tune of demise and the audience instantly knows Morrie is dead the second Conway looks at him.Beautiful writing and amazing acting, gives me chills.
What’s the name of the song and who sings it please?

Maybe it's meant to mean that Conway's true love is killing. Just thinking out loud I guess.

de niro is amazing actor, but in my personal opinion he is at his best when he plays the bad guy
In one movie he played a gay pirate
Robert de niro is one of the worlds greatest actors if anything..........his new movie with joe Pesci and al Pacino comes out this fall and it’s called (the Irishman)
@John Smith stardust look it up its a fantasy movie
Too bad he has TDS now. Phuck DeNiro
Yes he played bad guy here
In this scene, Robert De Niro makes smoking look cool and healthy.
You are not gonna die from old age anyway so smoke away 💨

It isn't?🤔🤔🤔

De Niro tells us he has decided to kill Morrie without any dialog and minimal facial expression. This is some of the best acting ever screened
He's the best ever hands down
He also looked at Tommy who has his back turned to us and they share a little "acknowledgement' grin
@@ptolemyphilopator Tommy in real life was 6'4 he was a big crazy man
The song as well. Scorcese knew he wanted to use Cream and when he looked at the “rushes” he saw that look and decided to synch the guitars to it. The acting is phenomenal but the music cues the audience to the exact moment when he decides to do it. When great actors work with great directors it makes for great cinema. Who could have guessed?
DeNiro and Scorsese together. The cinematography, the slow zoom, the music, everything. There’s a reason those two worked together to make masterpiece after masterpiece
DeNiro’s stare alone deserved an Oscar!
When goodfellas was being made,de Niro used to phone the real Henry hill when he was in hissed.de Niro would ask him questions like"how did jimmy used to hold his cigarettes?' And "how did he stand at the bar?' He called him on a daily basis.this is translated in he performance.goodfellas in my opinion is the greatest ganster film.(and American ganster)
Godfather is more deep than goodfellas but it is more orthodox Italian American crime movie. But agreed this is better in depicting badass gangsters and their day to day lives. But Godfather is better than this movie by a slight margin.
Wow that Jimmy Conway must've looked like a fuckin' badass. I mean if that's Robert DeNiro's impression of you, you must be one hell of a cool son of a bitch.
@@akshaybahuguna4906 Godfather is just weird. They never seem to commit any crimes, yet they murder each other over control of their do-nothing empire. And there's a ton of stuff that's mostly about the immigrant experience. It doesn't feel like a mafia movie.
@PewDiePie Godfather is more philosophical, Goodfellas is more real. I prefer Goodfellas, but the Godfather is flawless.
@PewDiePie
The Godfather is unrealistic. The Mob had a major influence on the movie to try to make themselves look better.
That music perfectly compliments this scene. Scorsese is a genius.
Eric Clapton, De Niro and Scorsese. That's quite a trio.
@@vordman But don't forget Jack Bruce!
@@toddsundell5586 And Ginger Baker! Right up there in the psycho stakes with Joe Pesci.
I think that Crossroads by cream would be a better fit for the scene, because it’s not a love song it’s about selling your soul, and Jimmy is about to figuratively sell his soul by kill multiple people for money
@@seantaylor5051, Jimmy gave up his soul long before then.
Henry himself coached DeNiro exactly how Jimmy in real life would drag a cigarette.
@@mangopussi9432 yeah De Niro actually asked very specific questions about jimmy. Like how he would hold his cigarette, how he would walk, and things like that
That is a stare of a lion stalking its prey. It's worth a thousand lines of dialogue. If you get that stare casted your way, better get your affairs in order. Better yet, don't ride shotgun.

The older I get the more fascinated I become with situations like this. The idea that men could so calmly decide internally, “I’m going to kill this guy”. And to remain so calm about it… I understand this is just a scene from a movie. But it’s still insane to me that men like this actually exist! They’re the closest thing to real world Monsters. Fascinating yet Terrifying.
Henry literally said Jimmy was a nervous wreck. There's nothing calmly about him.
Growing up in Los Angeles in the gang bangin 90's, I knew plenty of people like that. Even teenagers who were cold blooded killers. Point to someone and they'd shoot them without even asking Why? They're the kind of people that can turn on you real quick. It's why you never become to friendly with those type of people. Never know what joke or word might piss them off.
it’s a scene from a movie but keep in mind a lot of this happened in real life..
Yeah, it's one thing to explode in rage in the moment, but to calmly decide to extinguish a human life at some later point in time...
I dont find that shit "fascinating" at all.
In this case it might even have a reason as the guy knew Jimmy robbed the money, but killing other people just because they are talking trash is too much of a evil move.
One thing is to kill for a reason, an insult or whatever, ppl who kill without reason are pos.
:20 This jerk off is really pissing me off!
:34 Should I do it? Might not be a bad idea.
:45 Yep. It's a done deal.
:51 Now how do I wanna go about doing this?
Pretty good
Never have I wanted to smoke a cigarette in my life as much as now.
the advertisement is working!
Jimmy smoking a cigarette is kind of like portraying to me " I don't give a damn about my health and I definitely dont care about Morries".
When he looks at the guy beside him, I shivered. It was like he was saying “you know that guy is dead, right?” all with his eyes and a curled smile
Everytime I hear “Sunshine of your Love” this scene pops in my head
0:53 "tired eyes": De Niro half closes his eye
that's so sick.
It`s probably because of the cigarette smoke
Probably thinking
Such a dark stare that he gives. Such a badass stare with the cigarette, the zooming, the music, and the slow mo. Let's you know this is someone you don't wanna fuck with.
Guy's a veteran mobster and a murderer, obviously you wouldn't want to fuck with him.
The little looks he gives Tommy are so subtle yet so effective. What a great piece of acting without saying a word
De Niro was absolutely fantastic in this movie. He did this scene so well and all he did was sit at a bar & smoke a cigarette.
Who ever thought about putting "sunshine of your love" is a genius!
That was Scorcese and I agree he's a genius.
Yup, that would be Scorcese and not only that, but as he was writing this scene with a friend, Scorcese said "write down CREAM", his friend was like "what for??", Scorcese said "just do it". He could already picture the song as he was writing the scene
glad they didn't pull something from 1979, like fucken My Sharona or something
@@StuntmanDanHemi We watched the same documentary my friend.
Martin Fucking Scorsese, man
De Niro at his best here. The malevolance, the scheming. You can SEE him deciding, and he doesn't say a word.
As a younger man back home in Ireland during the "Troubles", I would drink in pubs with friends I had know since a boy. A lot of these guys were part of an organization that, shall we say, weren't too fond of the English. Many a time I would be having a few pints with one particular guy who, on the outside, was just a normal everyday guy. It was just the two of us together. We drank, talked, told jokes but if somebody walked into the bar that had done him a wrong, owned him money or some such he would get this 1000 yard stare look on his face. It was like looking at a dead person, he was there beside me but he wasn't present...for want of a better description. It was fucking terrifying. A look only a stone cold hardened killer can have. That look would be gone in 10 seconds and he'd be "back" to his usual self. Something I wish no one to ever see in person but something that has to be seen purley for the feeling of absolute terror it gives you. Even typing and thinking about it now gives me chills. Mr De Niro nails it perfectly. Amazing acting.
It has something to do with enlarged pupils. It makes the eyes look black. It happens when a person gets aroused. But you tend not to see it on normal people since they also freak out, get loud, just acting up. But psychopaths remain calm on the outside so you are better able to notice this effect! Just my 2 cents..
You lost me at Ireland lol fuget about it
@James Cricket bowled me a Yorker there Jimbob 👍
@James Cricket Or from Strabane.
Your friend sounds like a phony. Did he ever actually do anything or did he just stare at them from across the room like a bitchy teenage girl?
Robert De Niro is a whole genre himself. Absolute boss.
DLK
Such a tragedy that De Niro went from gold like this to punching Zac Efron up the arse every 30 seconds.
Its sad that hes just doing movie roles that he finds fun? De Niro has had a great career and a long one at that he can do whatever he wants at this point
Who would have thunk that he would go on to play roles like Bernie Madoff? Probably De Niro. He knows what he's doing.
YES my guy. At least homies making some money tho
What respected actor hasn't fell off a little after a long, established career? You're talking about a movie that was made almost 30 years ago. You expect him to maintain the same level of relevancy throughout his whole career despite his age? Fuck outta here, "wise guy".
he already had his golden years and now that he is an old man he wants to try new things

In general, I think DeNiro was at his sexist in this film, and particularly in this scene.

Morrie is definitely one of the most underrated characters of any Scorsese movie.
When Jamey said "That's weird" on Joe Rogan's podcast.
0:41 He's so damn pleased with himself.
How was he not nominated for an academy award for this performance? Honestly Joe, Ray and Rob should have all been nominated they was just brilliant throughout the movie. Literally every character is memorable...is memorable.
I honestly have no idea how Ray Liotta did not get a nomination.
Yeah, Dances with Wolves is just not in the same category as Goodfellas.
Scorsese basically gave Hollywood and the old guard of the Hays code the middle finger at the end when he had Pesci shooting at the camera.
This film was iconic and will go down as one of, if not the greatest movies ever made.
I think at the end there you made a Jimmy two times reference
@@cha5 That's frequently been the case with the Oscars. A film that lost that year becomes a certified classic, introduced to multiple new generations over time -- while the film that won that year people barely remember.
The icepick scene was incidental. Here is where we actually witness Morrie’s death. When someone like Jimmy Conway (Burke) looks at you like that you‘re already dead.
This that look you give to some chubby chick at the bar after 4 jack N cokes

It was at that moment when we all realized who the real bad guy of this movie is, he was somewhat the opposite of Henry.
Samuel Benitez I am pretty sure I knew they were all criminals about 15 minutes in (and technically all "bad" guys). But I know what you mean. Jimmy Burke is definitely evil incarnate, he was arguably worse than Tommy because he was a meticulous planner and capable of more, whereas Tommy was just a nutcase. Reckless. Jimmy orchestrated the execution of like 12 people, that's some Heisenberg shit.
voteZDLR Yep, even though Heisenberg eventually showed his true colors because of his situation, as he was likely raised in the suburbs of New Mexico into a loving family and constantly nagging wife, Jimmy Burke on the other hand was likely raised in hell and had to be like that to fight his way to the top and eventually liked it, just like Heisenberg liked his 2 year criminal career.
Samuel Benitez Actually not to correct you but Jimmy Burke was adopted I think and he absolutely loved his parents. He was just a bad kid. They have a good documentary on the real Jimmy Burke here. His family was good, he just chose to become a professional criminal. I think the idea with Walter AND Jimmy is that the capacity for evil lies within all of us. In Walter's case it just took lung cancer and desperation to bring it out. With Jimmy, it wasn't so difficult a decision. He just wanted to be a gangster :P
henry is definetly the bad guy, he’s all about respect and his new family then he’s suddenly a cokehead piece of shit and rats on all of them. he wasn’t the only bad guy tho
@@execolle1337 Henry wasn't a bad guy, you can see it from the very first scenes, he's the only one helping the guy who got shot near the restaurant, he was actually worried during the Billy Batts beating, also in the Miami zoo scene, you can see he really didn't want to kill that guy, he only was interested in appeareance, money and power, the mob was just an easy way to get it
He's fucking crazy in this film. You guys are all point at the facial expressions, and his eye contact, and his body language. But look at his mouth; he doesn't exhale xD
This scene forever lives rent free in my mind
Now this is real acting. None of this modern day boring super hero stuff recycled just genuine body language and facial expressions at their best
Don't watch this scene if you recently quit smoking
As soon as I quit smoking I knew Jimmy was gonna whack Morrie
The subtle half smile he does is the best part.
Brilliant acting. You can see him conjure up the plan to kill him, get excited about it with a boyish look on his face, and then i'm not sure, he looks a bit sad, probably not for Morrie but moreso for Henry who's friend has got to go.
The slow transition in his face expression: "Should I kill him? Nah!... I mean... Why not?... I'm gonna kill him!"
Always loved how simple this scene conveyed Jimmy's motives. "Fuck sharing"
Perfectly explained
The look that says "I don't know if this world is gonna be better without you, but MY world is gonna be better without you."
Crazy that Robert was able to tell the audience that he’s gonna kill without saying one word
That little slight smirk/smile he gives when he looks away is so effortlessly COOL.
Stress killed Morrie, had this been at any other time Jimmy would’ve just let it go by slapping Morrie around like he did all these years up to this point. With everything going on at the time we see that instead of being strong the pressure gets to Jimmy and he starts cracking. It was a beautiful portrayal of going from strength to weakness in the face of adversity.
I kinda agree but I feel like Jimmy had had enough of Morrie’s loud mouth and annoying personality. The stress didn’t help but Jimmy was clearly already sick of Morrie even at the start of the movie…
With his morbid and intimidating glare, you can actually read into it his realistic intention is the hunger of doing away with Morey in the worst way possible.
There is not a time that I hear "Sunshine of Your Love" that I do not think of this scene! Jimmy "plotting"...pure genius!
Back in high school my history teacher was tutoring me after class and started singing Danny Boy (Danny is my name). When I sang along with him he laughed and looked so happy like he suddenly had hope for the new generation. Thanks Goodfellas. It probably helped me pass the class.
When Deniro gives you that stare, you know it's over
He was serious with that face. He wasn't playing around. He really wanted to whack him.
not a single word as said during that stare, and yet, it told the audience everything we needed to know. This is absolute cinema.
When I see anyone in my social circle looking at me like this, smoking, drinking...I make sure I'm sitting in the back of the vehicle.
If you didn’t know any better you’d think Robert De Niro was checking someone out
One of the greatest movies of all times
This is the best movie, ever. And Robert Dinero just instills fear in me after all of this time
The best scene in the entire film in my opinion. Just look at his face as the camera zoom in he looks excited knowing exactly what he’s going to do. Throw Cream in….bloody genius!
When Scorcese was writing this scene with Nicholas Pileggi he abruptly told him "Put in Cream" and Pileggi was like 'What the hell are you talking about?", but Scorcese persisted and the rest is cinematic history.
I’m in the middle of watching Scorsese’s MasterClass and in it, he has a session on the use of music in film. In that video, he explains that they shot this 32-36 frames per second and that one of the major things they were doing was to sync up the guitar lick “da na da” to Deniro’s eyes that flare up. It happens in this video at :40. About 12 seconds later the lyric about the tired eyes happens. I had never noticed that before even though I’ve seen Goodfellas about 50 times in my life.
