One pulled up to us at the charger in town a few months ago (Northern Ireland), and it looks STUNNING in person. The guy driving was getting around 250 miles on a full charge, and that was without him driving like his foot was a feather, just normal driving. He said as soon as he put his foot down, and went ham, it would drop to around 200. It is crazy acceleration, and blows pretty much ANYTHING below £100k. It's stunning in person though, video footage does not do it justice.
I’ve seen one here in the UK in the green colour and it looks fantastic. I wouldn’t get the XPower though, don’t need that mad level of performance. The extended range at the same price as the XPower looks a much better buy. Shame you can only get the green in the XPower here.
In the UK we have never bought into the muscle car concept rather prioritising steering handling ride and brakes over outright performance. Thus is due to our best driving roads being narrow, with short straights and tight corners and often bumpy and wet. Cars like the i30N are properly engineered for these type of roads the MG clearly isn't
I realise this may only affect the UK but all these EVs coming out with supercar performance are getting ludicrously expensive to insure in the UK, so much so they are not really a viable option. I get that this may only be a UK problem though.

I have one of the last Fiesta ST made and it’s the best fun down a country road and you don’t have to go full on for the car to give you a grin from ear to ear. It’s the way it’s set up that gives you the fun not full on speed. I had a new Fiesta St in 2019 with Pirelli P zeros as standard and it lost the plot in the wet and was down right dangerous in the snow. My newer version has Michelin pilot sport 4”a and these tyres transform the car. The MG4 x power should come as standard with the Michelins. I went to see the X power in the showroom and have to say the interior is very cheap looking plastic which put me off the car as this would have been a genuine contender for my next car. If they can upgrade the perceived quality in the cabin with their next update I would be buying one. I can see why TG made the “fun “ comment as it’s built in from good engineering as on my fiesta ST so it can be done.
The interior in a super car is not really an issue. Think about why your are buying it. If it's not for it's performance then this isn't the vehicle for you.
The idea of the MG4 isn't the problem. Manufacturer Survivability is. We truly live in a time where the number of platforms for cars must decrease due to the outrageous cost to build a durable long lasting profitable EV. Niche brands cannot survive unless the bottom half of the car comes from a common mold or platform that also fits 20 other models minimum!
Yes, a low cost rocket ship. I just hope that the chassis is up to it and that drivers can handle it. With nannies running Australia's road network, people don't get much chance to learn to drive at speed. Some supercar makers require drivers to have training before they take delivery. The MG4 has supercar performance. WRX owners used to be hit with substantial insurance premiums. It will be interesting to see how the MG fares.
I think he is comparing the antiquated Toyota with the standard MG4. Toyota's are souless boxes on wheels with yester year technology. Ok if you are a granny or Uber driver.
Electric cars or electric motors are King for performance, on any measurement. I think a kit that adds an electric motor to existing ICE cars, that can be switched on manually would be an awesome option for performance boost. It could reduce petrol or diesel usage and wear on the mechanical components. The battery size could be very small and still have a very significant impact; The equivalent of 20-100km driving distance.
You're more or less describing a plugin hybrid. The MG HS plugin has 64km of electric only range and it does what you are saying - boost performance (particularly at low speeds), is electric-car quiet and delivers good petrol economy by assisting the ICE on long trips. An SUV that does 0-100 in 7s. AUD$45 to $50k depending on trim level and comes with a 7 year, unlimited kms warranty.

You have to disengage the price from any constructive criticism. If the criticism is genuine, that is. Balance the test reports against each other and see if the criticisms stack up. Even you have some reservations, so there is that. You dump the car tyres straight away, so what does that tell you? AU$60K is a lot of money, but what do you get for that? Speed and performance are only part of the equation. There is a lot more to consider, orange callipers and black roof aside. The MG4 is a good vehicle IMO, but you need to be critical in your thinking with what is on offer and decide in a rational way before engaging.
Yes is a bargain...try to see if the ac works or the dealer fix it good luck....Gigacast😂 once you are in an accident said bye to your car your insurance will be more expensive and more crap in landfield
I suspect Top Gear are referring to subjective qualities, not ultimate numbers when they are talking about driving dynamics. But Sam does have a point, these are opinions not facts. I've heard comment, over the years, about electric powersteering being numb, but Lotus addressed this by using electrically driven hydraulic powersteering. This seemed to have returned some feedback to the steeringwheel. There are things that can be done to bring in some sporty sensation back to sporty electric cars. There would be some efficiency penalties for these, but the customer who wanted these attributes had already accepted these compromises in their ICE cars, so i suspect they'd accept them in EVs as the cost of sportiness.
Hammond, May and Clarkson were not the original 3 the show started in 1977, paused in 2001 for a while, commenced again late 2002 with Clarkson & Hammond and another presenter, James May joined in late 2003.
I test drove one yesterday. Phenomenal acceleration! Put an order down straight away. BTW I can’t stand Clarkson, he’s an insufferable bigot. They should have pulled the plug way before they sacked him.
A lot of mix up here about grip vs handling. A hot hatch is about the handling and adjustability of its attitude throughout a corner, this car apparently offers very little of that. The fact it could probably decimate many hot hatches around a short lap due to its exceptional acceleration isn’t going to prove anything about its handling and level of hotness. I bet on proper tyres the gap would be even bigger too, still not what the car enthusiast’s definition of a hot hatch is though.
More misinformation from Sam. Toyota corolla hybrid is 25k cheaper than the MG mentioned in this article in Australia. This clearly not " around the same price" etc. Why the exaggeration? Credibility zero.
Uhmm... Sam was talking about he MG4 model range when speaking about perceived quality issues not specifically the Xpower version in this video. The cheapest Corolla is $36,500 and most expensive is $43,700 the cheapest MG4 $40,709 - maybe pay attention a little more closely in future.
Kia Ora Sam. Apparently there is a rumour going around from a highly placed source that Top Gear is about to be cancelled. According to the source, it is extremely difficult for Top Gear to continue after Freddy Flintoff's horror crash. Top Gear staff have apparently told to look for new jobs.

I suppose styling is subjective, as I think it looks quite good and fairly modern. I really don’t understand the bucktooth BMW approach to styling, but I guess they sell well too
In Europe Toyota Corolla Touring Sports is actually very good car for the price. Of course if you buy it with top specs it is not actually very affordable any more then, but quality wise it is very good and there is plenty of trunk space also. It is also quite economical car. It is not any performance car and not to meant to be that kind of car. But I think Toyota still makes some pretty good cars. In EV world of course they have been lagging behind pretty badly.

Speed and performance are only part of the equation. There is a lot more to consider, orange callipers and black roof aside. The MG4 is a good vehicle IMO, but you need to be critical in your thinking with what is on offer and decide in a rational way before engaging.
Topgear they always launch their cars in 6th gear. They stall before make it out of the gate and fail to down shift to get the hole picture.
Drove, rocket , buy , simple
Yes is a bargain...try to see if the ac works or the dealer fix it good luck....Gigacast😂 once you are in an accident said bye to your car your insurance will be more expensive and more crap in landfield
That backend though 🥴
Top Gear was always a BBC programme therefore not beholden to advertisers.
lots of pages on FB are saying that top gear has been cancelled by the BBC ...... but yeah, when the original 3 left it should have ended then
Hammond, May and Clarkson were not the original 3 the show started in 1977, paused in 2001 for a while, commenced again late 2002 with Clarkson & Hammond and another presenter, James May joined in late 2003.
Agreed, that Top Gear review guy was idiotic. I’ve stopped reading TopGear. The Xpower is an awesome car to drive.
I test drove one yesterday. Phenomenal acceleration! Put an order down straight away. BTW I can’t stand Clarkson, he’s an insufferable bigot. They should have pulled the plug way before they sacked him.
Used to watch top gear. Not anymore.
Cookie cutter wheels ! Id be putting semislicks all round and coilovers, no way im trusting that setup
$59,000 in Australia??? Dream on, it is way overpriced!
How much time do most people spend cornering at speed? If that’s what hot hatches do well they have virtually no use case.
@@renz2.060 yes i agree. That’s why crossovers and SUVs out sell them 100-1.
The point this car makes, your not getting what you pay for by so many other car manufacturers 😂😂
Your the "Electric Viking", You should have made him let you take the car for a spin and film you doing it, or else! At the very least you should have made a video of the incident and told him to try and get the video off you, so we could all have a laugh. :)
I decided that Top Gear was irrelevant a couple of years before Clarkson left. Haven't watched it since.
Your user name explains why. Lol
looks like an old Mazda 3
MG 👍👏🔥💪❤️
You never drove the car and only regurgitated the advertisement of the manufacturer. Top Gear drove it and came to a conclusion.
If they only got the styling right they would sell so many more. Really been whacked with the ugly stick unfortunately. Are they working with the guys from Ssangyong's styling department? 🤣
....right, this guy calls this shitbox stunning lol...
I suppose styling is subjective, as I think it looks quite good and fairly modern. I really don’t understand the bucktooth BMW approach to styling, but I guess they sell well too
if you live in Florida, I 100% guarantee you that you want a _white_ , not black, roof! lol
(black for Norway and Canada maybe?)
Ok
I haven't watched Top Gear since Jeremy Clarkson got the sack.
$40k??? GTFO?!?!?!?! EDIT $60k, my bad, but still, that is insane
It is truly amazing how this excellent car is being attacked by the media. Madness is rampant with wokeism and this attack is just another facet of this madness
Umm, pretty sure u don’t kno what woke means mate? It’s not in support of ice/oil/gas lol😅
@@jonshick5661 Well I think it means accepting a man can become a woman on a whim. Can enter competitions pretending he's a woman. Can go into women's changing rooms etc etc.
Theres going to be a lot of bmws on ebay tomorrow! Oh theres been hundreds on their for months , going cheap, cheap cheap😂
Pretty sure insurance for this car will be thru the roof
Stop and think that only a few years ago you would be paying 10 times the $$$$$ for any car that could give a 0 -100 km time under 4 seconds. This just shows how easy it is to get performance from electric motors compared to ICE.
First Tesla was the enemy to the Germans, now MG power 😂
Top Gear make themselves sound stupid, put the X-Power and the i30 N around a track for some hot laps with the same driver and tell us the times. If the fossil burner has the better times, let us know. Otherwise it is just speculation and opinion
Top gear is crap but it was good years ago with Jeremy Clarkson and the gang
A shopping trolley,faster than a M3 😂
A m3 comp shits all over these numbers.
@@mattyoz0 I’m your dreams son , I’ve been repairing BMWs for 40 years and the reliability is a lot to be desired
@petersimms4982 wtf are you talking about. Low 11s stock for an m3 comp low 12s for a xp. Try doing a little research, son.
@@mattyoz0 boyo boyo , I get kids in everyweek with shagged out British Muggs Wheels and for some mythical reason they fool themselves into thinking these European sheds are the be all. Absolutely delusional
A$39,000.....wow, that's A$1000 a month for the next 4 years ..............don't think I'll bother.
Neither the price or the maths is correct
I think EVs are still too expensive. Simpler, easier to manufacture, fewer components. Especially those from China…
$7k more can get the Seal Performance..... much much better car
Nobody watches Top Gear anymore mate 😂❤ don’t worry
The MG4 XPower won't be a track demon, however, for the price it delivers a great deal. Just wait until the Germans develop their hot hatches, they could handle better than the MG4XP, but at what price?
We are still waiting….The Germans are late
The German vehicles haven't really done that well in the EV market.
Sam, some of us don’t want the Chinese government to take our money. Ever. MG is government owned and operated.
Where do you live where you think that is an option?
true statement top gear is rubbish - yep!
Top gear searching for "lobby-bribes"
Top gear is dead, the show cancelled this year. It has been itself lacking in any excitement and engaging experience since 2015 after H,M & C left the show.
I have driven a Toyota Corolla in fact I made a small video and it's shitty like all their models.Except the Supra
Thumbs up for your courage to oppose TopGear's view.
@@harmony3138 you're responding to bots lol...
Sam is on drugs again. It might have supercar performance, but it is not a supercar. Its a very fast sedan that has to stop frequently for 30-60 mins to get more electrons. It's a sedan that has had the expensive drive-train removed and replaced by a very large overpriced battery, 1 or two motors (cheap) an inverter (cheap) and a BMS. The rest is much the same. The price difference cannot be justified. In addition Tesla have made large reductions in price recently - why, just to remain competitive. This means they were ripping ppl off in the first place. Still are.
LOL every morning when I wake up I have the choice of grabbing the keys to a modified 300+hp manual Giulietta and a base model Tesla model 3 RWD......................remind me some time to check if the battery on the Alfa has gone flat will you , there's a good lad.
