Interesting Scream fact: If you look very closely at Cotton's only scene. His hair has a striking resemblance, if not exactly the same hairstyle as Billy Loomis. That's why Sidney falsely identified him.

I think it’s so weird how so many seem to totally miss the connection with Maureen Prescott being an actress in Hollywood and the fact that Sidney was studying acting in Scream 2 before she ever realized her mother had the same passion.

I always wondered what Sid's relationship with her mother was really like. I find it hard to believe a woman with Maureen's past who's that brazen with infidelity pulled off playing a perfect suburban mom. There had to have been some disconnect or dysfunction that manifested itself in regards to her relationship between her and her family.
i had always figured that sidney was coming home from being out when maureen was killed, assuming she had been out with friends (perhaps that’s why she doesn’t like parties as it reminds her of the night her mum died) and she saw someone leave her house as she was coming in, concerned about who it is she immediately goes to her mums room and finds her body.
One thing about Maureen’s murder that’s always irritated me was the narrative and Stu/Billy raped her. Even the wiki says that, even though it’s simply not true. It’s been clear from the beginning of the movie and storyline that Cotton was having an affair with Maureen, and over all it would have been a relatively closed and done case of the DNA of Stu or Billy was found inside Maureen. And they would have been suspects from the beginning. Not to mention, I don’t believe for a second that Billy would rape the woman who had an affair with his father, which caused his mother to leave him. Billy was just about disgusted by Maureen and despised her. And of course that’s the reason why he murdered her.

Wouldn’t it make more sense to theorize that Maureen gave birth Roman while still in Hollywood then returned to Woodsboro? Since Roman had an established life in Hollywood when we meet him. Plus, its be hard to return home pregnant, carry the baby to term, then abandon it. We know she had a sister (Kate) wouldn’t someone close to her have known about the child?
@Auggie Calderon good point. Carrying a baby to term and not keeping it isn’t that rare. The alternative could have gone against her beliefs. Also, you’d think logically Roman would have made more than that one effort to connect with his mother - but obviously he wasn’t a “logical” person plus he was fueled with hatred, abandonment issues, and jealousy towards Sidney.
I want to know who raised Roman, it had to have been someone who knew who Maureen is to tell Roman that's his biological mother.. it's not like she raised him for a few years then left

Thanks for pointing out the small details of cotton and billy having the same hairstyle… that was sooo intentional because on scream 2 & 3 he had a low cut . That’s why these movies are genius because clues are hidden in plain sight
So basically this is what I think happened. After Roman was rejected he stalked Maureen and made his little movies. Then somehow met and got close enough to Billy to talk to him and tell him why his parents split. Showing him the movies he made as proof. I think for weeks Roman and Billy met and Roman guided him on how to kill. There may have even been another murder we don't know about. All we know is that they both planned it out. Billy ended up getting Stu involved with peer pressure and because Billy more or less took control of him. Meanwhile Roman kept stalking Maureen and eventually found the perfect time to strike knowing Cotton was a drunk. Then that night they snuck in or around the house and waited for Cotton to leave. Sid is most likely asleep at first. Maybe shes not even home yet. We really don't know. Cotton was drunk and when he left he left his jacket. Maybe he wasn't planning on leaving the whole night? Again we don't know. Thats when Billy and Roman made their move. Stu most likely being look out as he's not much of a killer just yet. (Sorry Stu fans. I just don't think a peer pressured kid is going to murder someone just yet. He doesn't have the anger like Billy and Roman obviously does. Plus even as a controlling as they are over him it wouldn't make a lot of sense after the initial attack to have their look out come in and take a stab.) Both Billy and Roman take their frustrations out on Maureen and then they leave. Roman leaves first without making a sound. Billy leaves a bit later taking the jacket and making his hair look more like Cotton. So when Sid eventually opened her bedroom door after she is awakened by a noise (Or she got home while the murder was taking place. Went to her bedroom and then heard the noise) all she thinks she sees is a man leaving. Later she identifies this man as Cotton as all she seen was his backside. She then goes into her mothers room to check on her and bam. She calls 911 and yeah. Roman soon leaves town because its more or less over for him and Billy decides he isn't done yet. So for the next year he and Stu plan and train themselves to be better killers by watching movies. Most likely something Roman said to do earlier. There are a few factors here. Sid most likely did NOT know her mom was cheating on her dad with Cotton (or anyone) because shes later more or less surprised by the revelation of her moms affairs. She also gets defensive when Gail questions how she knows Cotton is the murderer. Sids witness testimony is obviously rocky because again she may not have been home right away (Wouldn't she notice Cottons car? If she did come home and Cotton already left there wouldn't be a car and if Sid is unaware of his ever being there in the first place there is no need to look for it either. Yet she also swears she seen Cotton because of the jacket so she has clearly seen him wear it before. Maybe Sid didn't know about the affair but seen Cotton often because he was acting as a friend to her mother?) or was asleep in her room (the most likely scenario because you'd think if Sid got home and thought she seen Cotton she would remember seeing his car or not) because I don't believe she knew Cotton was over to sleep with her mom. Sid even remarks that its weird how little she knew her own mother because of all the secrets she kept. Truth is. A lot of facts are missing to create and entire picture but this is what I got.
She didn’t see her mom get killed. She reacted that way to the re-enacted crime scene in Scream 3 because that is what see saw been she found her mother dead. And the girls in the bathroom gossiping in Scream said that she saw her mom butchered because Sydney was in the house. She did see who see thought was Cotton leaving. That would of been Stew or Billy wearing the same clothes so to frame Cotton.
I don't know if it makes sense for Scream 5, obviously the movies will be connected, but I think they are trying to move the story away from Maureen being the motivation behind everything. I think it would have been an amazing opening for the 3rd movie although the Cotton scene is my favourite part of Scream 3, they could have moved that scene to later in the movie.
I don't know how it is in the original, but in the Russian voice acting - she was raped, gutted and hung on the main square of the city - yes, it could be good opening...
Technically, Maureen wasn't a Ghostface victim, as they didn't wear the Ghostface costume during her murder. One of them (who?) did wear Cotton Weary's jacket to frame him.

The Maureen Prescott backstory was the most shockingly honest thing in the whole series (I don't even count that garbage fourth movie, which was rushed into production to avoid losing series rights). There's a darkness about Hollywood. People get used and spit out.
I always wanted to see what happened to Maureen Prescott that night even though we all knew what happened to her, I felt like it was a wasted opportunity for an amazing kill scene. Marine Prescott was super shady

I think they dated before Maureen's murder. In Scream, Billy says to Sidney in the second scene that only a year and a half prior to the events in the movie, how they "started off hot and heavy, working their way up to an NC-17 relationship. But now lately, we just seem to be edited for television". So seeing as how Scream 2 takes place a couple years after Woodsboro murders (setting is April 1997), that places the murders of the first movie in 1995, and Maureen's murder in 1994. So Billy and Sidney started dating some time in 1993 when they were freshmen in high school. So they were together when Maureen hooked up with Billy's father, and Billy's mom left Hank.

My theory on the murder of Maureen. So Maureen invites Cotton over and they get together. Now Cotton has to sneak inside, so Sidney is unaware he is there. Billy has a phone call from Roman to inform him that Cotton has quietly gone into the house through the backdoor. So Sidney is still not aware of what is happening. Billy was there with Sidney, maybe they are watching movies downstairs. Sidney begins to fall asleep on the couch with Billy. So he tells her I am off. He goes outside but hides in the near surrounding. He kept close to the house but out of sight. He waits for cotton to leave. Now Maureen and Sidney both asleep. He returns inside and proceeds into the kitchen and grabs a knife. (Yes similar to halloween.) Heads upstairs quietly. He spots Cotton's jacket on the side and he puts it on. He first slits her throat to keep her silent. Proceeds to gut her and as he is leaving, he loudlily shuts the door. That then is intentionally waking Sidney. He begins to walk away in the dark, all the while he is still wearing Cotton's jacket. Sidney is awoken by the door closing loudly as Billy walks away. Sidney heads outside spotting someone walking away from her house. Thinking Billy had left hours ago, she doesn't believe it is him. But she is only able to recognise the coat and the kind look likes Cotton in the dark as the person is getting away. So she realises something is very wrong, Sideny then goes back inside and heads upstairs to her mother's bedroom. She went to call her and explain she saw who she thinks is Cotton walking away, late in the he night. Only to finds her on the floor butchered. Rushes to call the police. She tells them what she thinks she saw. (Remember Sidney was the star witness in the murder trial. But all she saw that is mentioned during a conversation between sideney and Gale. Sidney "I saw cotton leave, his jacket was covered in her blood." Gale "no, you saw someone leave with his jacket on. The same someone who planted the jacket in cotton's car framing him." Now if consider a scene in scream one with Billy standing near Sidney. And a scene in scream 2 with cotton standing near sidney. Cotton is 6ft 3" And Billy is exactly 6ft. Both similar body features e.g. weight, hair and skin colour. From behind in the dark while Billy is running..they'd be very difficult to tell apart.
Honestly it never made sense to me that Maureen would have her affair with Cotton while Sidney was home or that Sidney wouldn’t hear her mother being killed. So my theory has always been that Sidney wasn’t supposed to be home that night. Maybe was at Tatum’s house. Maureen invited Cotton over. Cotton leaves the house, forgets his jacket. Billy and Stu were watching, waiting. They attack and kill Maureen, find the jacket. Are hiding in the house when Sidney comes home. She goes to look for her Ma, finds her. She looks out the window or door in time to see Billy walking away wearing the jacket (maybe Stu had left first?), he looks like Cotton. The guys put the jacket in Cotton’s car Interestingly, assuming Sidney didn’t know who Cotton was before this, it makes me wonder how he came under suspicion other than fitting a description. Unless he came forward about the affair after hearing about her death. Or someone had spotted the two together.
Gale in Scream 1 said that whoever wore Cotton’s jacket purposefully planted it where they knew it would frame him. Sidney barely had to do any work at all during the trial probably.

But the thing is, why would the cops search Cotton’s car? Unless Sidney already knew who Cotton was. If she didn’t, what was she gonna say? “I saw a blond man wearing this jacket leaving my house in the middle of the night and it MUST have been this guy who so happens to have a bloody jacket in his car.” Pretty far fetched the cops would find Cotton and the jacket before Cotton found and disposed it. So I’m honestly guessing that Billy and Stu put in an anonymous call to get the police to tell about the affair and check Cotton’s house the next day
@@rpproductions6241 the forensics liekly didn’t have enough probable cause to look for Billy or Stu’s prints on the jacket, OR hair strands. Once they found Cotton’s DNA on Maureen and her blood on his jacket (I imagine Billy and Stu bloodied it), there truly was very little Sid had to think about. Plus she was 15-16 at the time. A lot of pressure for a teenager to process for a trial.

I read she was stabbed in the groin and chest. I also dont believe Sidney witnessed the murder as she says "I saw him leave, wearing it" surely she wouldn't have specified she saw him leaving if she saw him kill her

We could say what if Maureen never really died, and it was someone who looked like her? Saying what if what if what if could create endless possibilities, it's too complicated. We know Billy and Stu killed Maureen and we know Roman lead them to do it. We have no reason to think anything else x

Sidney says "I saw him leave wearing it", I think if she had witnessed the murder, she would have said something along the lines of "I saw him murder her". I find it more likely that she either was in the house and came out of her room just in time to see Billy-as-Cotton get away, or that she came home after the murder and saw Billy (who had waited for this moment to be seen) wearing Cotton's jacket then. Either way, it is likely that she was the one to find her dead mother, explaining her reaction at the set of Stab 3.
I always found the scene set up in scream 3 referring to Maureen's death a little confusing. It says she was murdered in her home and either Sidney either saw and / or found her. Even in scream 1996 the two girls in the high school bathroom said she saw her mother getting murdered. Take either statement with a pinch of salt, because that could've just been written in as "typical high school gossip". However, I found it odd because in the first movie when Sidney is home alone before she is attacked the first time, she turns on the television to the news channel where Gale was doing a story on the murder. She said that Maureen was found brutally assaulted and murdered not too far from them, in the town square of Woodsboro. Sidney also states she saw Cotton leave wearing his coat with blood on it, and Gale corrects her by saying Sidney only saw someone leave. Presumably she saw someone leave her house, but why state in the first movie Maureen was found somewhere else?
The line is "Only a year ago Maureen Prescott, wife and mother was found raped and murdered not far from this peaceful town square." It's typical for Gale - dramatizing a bit without really saying anything untrue. "Not far" makes it seem like she is almost at the crime scene, yet it is open enough to still be accurate (her home wasn't too far away from the town square, after all).
The news clip with Gale at the town square was more appropriate because her outside the Prescott home filming that news clip wouldn’t of gone over well with the family.
Two things. First, that woman playing Maureen in the photo with Sydney is actually the casting director Lisa Beach. Second, I CAN'T BELIEVE THEY'RE ACTUALLY CONSIDERING DOING THIS!!! I must be psychic. I said this years ago! Right after Scream 4 was released. I always said that if they do another Scream film it should be a prequel and focus on the murder of Maureen Prescott. Show how it all began and how Maureen's affair with Billy's father set in motion the events of the entire series.

Because everyone was sure it was Cotton and that it was basically confirmed he was drunk and probably a rough character, they all likely jumped to conclusions. The 2 had sex, his DNA is in hers and given that the murder scene was soooooooo violent, they attributed that it probably wasn't "just sex" but drunken rape. Sidney was convinced she saw Cotton but didn't believe the rumors of affairs so she assumed he invited himself over, violated her mother and killed her. No one else really "agreed" she was raped. Gale says Cotton admitted they had sex, Billy and Stu simply said Cotton was easy to frame. When I was younger I thought the same thing: Cotton didn't rape her... Billy and/or Stu did... but I don't think rape actually happened. Sex did, then it was easy to frame the scene in a way that would lead the case to appear to be a rape/murder

I guess I always thought that because I could totally see Billy/Stu raping her before killing her…particularly Billy forcing Stu to partake.

Also, Billy waited about an entire year just to get consent from Sidney, making her break the ‘virgin girl lives’ rule in horror movies. I don’t see why he would rape maureen or even force Stu to, just to wait an entire year for consent from Sidney. Billy is fucked up in many ways, but I don’t believe he would be that fucked up. Same with Stu. Stu’s just a dumb teenager who’s in love with Billy, neither of them would’ve been likely to actually rape Maureen. Maureen Prescott wasn't murdered in her room. in scream(1996) when sidney was flipping though tv channels and lands on Gale Weather's news story, she clearly says that Maureen was found brutally murderedn not far from the town square of woodsboro. so I'm guessing billy and stu killed her after cotton left, then moved her body. sidney only probably blamed cotton because he was the last person she was with.
Sharon Stone, Johnny Depp and Pablo Schreiber as Maureen Prescott, Hank Loomis and Cotton Weary would be a great Stab: The Prequel. Sharon and Johnny worked with Wes Craven and Pablo is Liev Schreiber's younger brother.
I was also confused and thought Maureen body was found in some park area, remember what Gale reported when Sidney flipped to the news she was talking about how Casey and Steve's death was similar to Maureen's death year prior..or did I hear wrong.

I Really don't think Maureen was Killed by Ghostface, or got Calls to Her as a Game they Play. It was just Cold Hearted MURDER!!!!! I think Sidney heard her mother being killed and called the cops, then snuck out and saw "Cotton" (Billy in Cotton's jacket). Sidney rushed to check on her mother and found the bloody crime scene, including her mother's butchered body.
I hope Scream 5 takes us back in time and shows us how Sidney's Mother was killed that would be a great opening I get the vibe that she may have been a pornstar (Rina Reynolds) as a means to an end while waiting on that big break from Hollywood.

Maureen was a back story character and part of the mystery. Showing her death and then jumping 1 year later, then showing Casey's death would've ruined one of, if not the best opening to a slasher.
You know it will be a very cool scene is scream 5 if they showed a flashback scene to Sidney Prescott mother's being murdered I think they'll be a pretty cool things to see on the big screen I've seen how she was murdered and killed give me your honest opinion about that
I like how the opening line points out that Casey Becker wasn't the 1st victim because Maureen Prescott was. Fun fact: Casey Becker wasn't Stu and Billy's 2nd victim either. The villain killed her after Cotton left after having sex with her. These both things, sex and killing was mixed confusely and thought as rape murder. Cotton was drunk also helped in creating this confusion
Just because a movie says someone is related to someone doesn't actually make it so. Challenge: Tell me what makes more sense: Scenario 1): Maureen, a twenty something year old goes to Hollywood, gets raped and impregnated, goes home, has the baby, someone else raises the child, the child wants to be a director in highschool runs off to Hollywood, searches the whereabouts of his real mother, looks in the Sunrise studios archives and finds his mother as "Maureen" not "Reina", the file gives her location for Woodsburro, he goes to Woodsburro to shoot an amatuer film of meeting his mother, she blows him off and says she's not his mother, he stays and films her infidelities with other men, finds high school students to murder his mother, shows a tape to the students of his mom cheating with their father(s), they accept and choose to rape and murder her, then wait another year to kill her daughter and husband along with anyone else they feel like killing, he acts in movies, learns to be a director, he waits 5 years after and tries to find his sister to murder her and anyone else he feels like. OR! Scenario 2): John Milton rapes "Reina" and other women, she runs home away from Hollywood, one of the actresses has a child, forces John or another man to raise him, John or the other man raises him to be an actor and director, as a kid he witnesses the rape of women, in high school he learns that his mom isn't his real biological mother, John or other man either tells him it was some random actress or lies and says it was some girl "Reina" because that's all he remembers, Roman searches his father's personal files, he finds "Reina"'s file, he tracks her down in Woodsburro, She tells him she's not his mother, he doesn't accept what she's told him, he stays and creeps on her and realizes she's cheating with men, he uses the creep footage he has to entice a high school student Billy to kill the woman he tells himself is his mother, Billy gets an accomplice Stu, they rape and murder Maureen, they wait one year later after her death to kill again her husband and daughter who Billy tries to sleep with but doesn't, after Billy and Stu are unsuccessful and bring it to the cops attention Roman runs back to Hollywood, there he tries to forget about everything, he acts and looks to direct, the studios greenlight Stab, Roman watches the movies knowing what they're really about, he rapes a woman bringing back the memories, he asks John to direct Stab 3, he tracks Sidney down to tell her what happened and murder her, he kills his (possible father or man who hosted the rape of whom he assumes is his mother) John and others but is unsuccessful in killing Sidney. Later Sidney check's the DNA it doesn't match so she happily moves on with her life. Which is more believable? And later on unbeknownst to Sidney there's a mystery man orchestrating the events: possibly Stu, Sidney's "real father" or a 3rd killer from the original murders. Who knows...?! 👻

It might not be the most exciting but the final 20 minutes of the film could be Maureens demise leading into Scream 1 and then end. Wouldn't be much action or suspense in the movie but it would give us more content. Not everybody thinks like I do or like you do so for those of us who would like a prequel, let us have our dreams.
I would actually be into the idea of seeing Maureen’s murder, maybe as an opening to the next film. It could’ve been the opening to Scream 3, since her murder plays a big part in Roman’s plan. To see a flashback of Billy and Stu committing the murder would be 🔥 honestly.
Honestly I do like the whole mystery of Maureens death which started everything. But I somehow feel like Maureen is a horrible person too watching the films. Shes supposed to be a victim, clearly. But I dont know why but she always comes across as an antagonist
it's because feminine sexuality = one of the highest forms of "deviance" as viewed by society, and the film(s) go on to show that by making you feel that way intentionally. it's also the reason there's the whole commentary about virgins in horror films and such. if you've had sex and are a woman, therefore not a virgin (chastity; pure), you're more "deserving" of being killed off/punished in some way
@@SurrealCache Yep - the Scream movies (at the very least Scream 1 and 3) are a strong indictment of toxic male entitlement and systemic abuse. I feel that the third movie makes it clear that Maureen was defined by being sexually abused at a young age, and the way this screwed her up hurt others in turn. But a) she wasn't the initial reason, the powerful men who used and abused her were, and b) as Sidney says, the ghostface guys (and one very male-inspired woman) still decide themselves to be murderous pricks - and the movie allows no excuses for that. Which is one reason why I like it - contrary to many other horror movies, it mostly refuses to portray killers as anything but pathetic losers.
@@bo2720 I don't know for sure, of course, but I think it is likely that Milton, the producer of the Stab movies, was a stand-in for Weinstein. Craven has been in the business for a long time then, and he has worked with the Weinsteins for years - it is unlikely he hasn't at least heard rumors. Even if not, though: The movie makes it clear that it regards sexual abuse in Hollywood as systemic and it draws a direct line from abusive men to femicidal men. The movie as a whole is a bit of a mess, but this part - as well as Sidney's arc - works well and rings true to me.
It would be so weird if she was stillalive and plotted the whole thing and confronting sydney. Telling her the truth that she never wanted to marry her father and have her as a child. That story would be so crazy!
I've said it many times, Maureen was the 'real' villain in the Scream series. 1.Turned her son into a psychopath by turning her back on him. 2. Cheated repeatedly on her husband with different men. 3. Caused Billy Loomis' family to be destroyed. 4. Got Cotton Weary locked up for a year as he was blamed for her 'murder' (euthanasia really) 5. Set every other Ghostface on the path of murder and madness. 6. Shamed and traumatized her poor daughter. That lady was disgusting and one of the poorest examples of a human being.

And her turning her back on her own son Roman is what sent him over the top enough to where he mentored Billy on how to get away with murder. Her murder! You know, find a partner to sell out in case you get caught and find someone to frame. Well Cotton was the someone to frame! And he rotted in prison on death row for over a year and for what? A piece of human garbage masquerading as a decent wife, mother, and neighbor. Maureen Prescott was the lowest form of humanity there was, taking up perfectly good oxygen from more worthwhile people! One things I’ve always wondered is how did Billy’s mom find out her husband was sleeping with Maureen? Billy obviously knew why his mom left his dad and abandoned the family but did anyone else know? Did Billy tell her after Roman showed his the video he took of his dad and Maureen meeting at the hotel? Rewatching the first movie I often theorize how she found out in the first place.
1) Why would Neil have continued to live and raise his young daughter in the same house where their wife/mother was butchered? Especially if his daughter saw her die. I can't see it. 3) Who did find her? Scream 3 seems to hint it was Sidney who found her in her bedroom - again, I can't see them staying in their home after such a trauma. 4) Sidney testified against Cotton - what was her testimony? 5) If everyone knew about Maureen and her lovers; did no one but Gail believe Cotton? 6) Trials take time, especially death penalty cases. How long were Billy and Sidney together?
sidney found her mom, her testimony was that she saw what she thought to be Cotton walking out of the house, it was infact Billy wearing Cotton's jacket and having similar hair. Billy framed Cotton. She didnt say she saw him kill, she said who she saw walk out. And considering Cotton was just banging Maureen (later falsely assumed rape, even though the wiki says Billy and Stu raped her it's up for debate)and seconds later killed, and Cotton was shady anyway, he was the obvious suspect.
and Sidney and Billy were together for a year and a half, meaning they were dating before Billy killed her mother. The trial was fairly quick because it was a cut and dry case pretty much.
What gets me is if Sydney's never seen cotton before how did she know it was cotton who left the house? How was she able to identify a man she's never seen before and from the back nonetheless. Unless cotton had been around and she knew of cotton before her mom's death. Sydney probably had a feeling something was more with her mom in Cotton but it's her mom so she chose to swept it under the rug. In order for her to pinpoint cotton weary and say it was him without a doubt who left the house she had to have seen/met him prior to that. Not to mention in all the scream movies majority of people on Maureen Prescott side of the family are mentally damaged. Sydney could start to exhibit some of that behavior, maybe she knew her mom was having an affair and she just didn't want to break her dad's heart. How did she not know there was another man in the house aka cotton? Then billy and stu after cotton left.
my theory is that the police probably found out from ppl in the town that maureen was having affairs with various men, found that one of the men was cotton, then had sidney see if she recognises him in a police line up.
Well it wasn't very thorough out murder not only because it is a movie but also the murder plot would have made more sense if the murder of Maureen was 3 years earlier only because of Sidney age ,and so forth
I was under the impression that sidney came home and somehow bypassed the killer and she saw someone who was wearing cottons clothes after they had killed her mum. sidney goes up to her mums bedroom and finds her.
I always wondered about Sidney and where she was that night. Her statement that 'she saw him leave in Cotton's coat' suggests that she was in the house when Maureen was murdered, but if so, why didn't she realise that somebody else was in the house with her mother, and why didn't she hear her mother being murdered. Unless she'd been out and arrived back in time to see the person leave, but it's never clarified.

Crazy thing is if Billy & Stu didn't murder Maureen then I wholeheartedly believe that Billy's mom would've, she even told Sid in the sequel "why don't you blame your mother?" So that indicates to me she knew about the affair maybe perhaps Roman showed her the tapes too. I would love some flashbacks in the fifth movie
I think from what little bread crumbs we are given, to me Sidney I think maybe heard and then by the time she checked found her mom’s dead body and looked out the window and saw Billy, thinking it was Cotton. I don’t know where Stu went after, but to frame Cotton Sidney could not see both leaving. As for if Billy and or Stu did anything to Maureen is tought cause Sidney says in the beginning Cotton forced himself, that her mom would never be interested, obviously that’s wrong they had an affair. I don’t know if both Billy and Stu did; if anything I’m sure Billy would have to show power, humiliate her, etc. But yes, would’ve found *ahem* evidence, I don’t see him putting on a condom, but 🤷🏼♀️. I don’t think Stu would’ve. And yeah, I don’t think they wore the Ghostface costume until Casey. So, maybe the whole rape thing was just Cotton and Maureen having sex and then after Billy and Stu definitely were physically abusing her as they killed her; and that’s where the confusion is. Billy, I wouldn’t put it past him, but he wasn’t a suspect, so that’s why there’s a big doubt in it. On second thought, they found no other evidence of Billy or Stu: hair, finger prints, etc. 🤔
I still think Neil Prescott played a part in Maureen's murder. If Roman showed Billy that footage...don't you think he would have shown Neil the same footage to break up her marriage and ruin her life? People assume Roman was talking about Stu when he said he told Billy to have a partner to sell out. Maybe it was Neil that they double crossed to set up for all the murders. He was the third partner. It would make sense that he let Billy and Stu in the house that night to kill Maureen. It seemed pretty neglectful of him to plan a business trip on the first anniversary of Sydney's mother's murder. There was no empathy. He didn't even ask question her mental well being about how she was doing. The police never were able to find confirm whether he arrived at his destination...most likely because he never truly had a reservation to begin with. Her father was also one of two people that knew her location and phone number in Scream 3. We certainly know Dewey didn't give it to Roman. That leaves her father, who, once again...was working with Roman. Roman may have not revealed this secret as he viewed Neil as the ace in hole...someone to carry on his plan if he failed. However, after so many failed attempted by other, maybe Neil decided it was in his best interest to let sleeping dogs lie. He did, after all, get away with murder. As for a motive...maybe there is one secret not yet revealed. Maybe in Roman's recons...he discovered the truth...that Neil was not Sydney's father.
I'd love to see more about Maureen Prescott in scream 6, her actresses still actually alive would love to see a cameo done by her somehow also maybe a flashback to the actual murder
Interesting Scream fact: If you look very closely at Cotton's only scene. His hair has a striking resemblance, if not exactly the same hairstyle as Billy Loomis. That's why Sidney falsely identified him.

I find it hard to believe a woman with Maureen's past who's that brazen with infidelity pulled off playing a perfect suburban mom. There had to have been some disconnect or dysfunction that manifested itself in regards to her relationship between her and her family.

One thing about Maureen’s murder that’s always irritated me was the narrative and Stu/Billy raped her. Even the wiki says that, even though it’s simply not true. It’s been clear from the beginning of the movie and storyline that Cotton was having an affair with Maureen, and over all it would have been a relatively closed and done case of the DNA of Stu or Billy was found inside Maureen. And they would have been suspects from the beginning.
Not to mention, I don’t believe for a second that Billy would rape the woman who had an affair with his father, which caused his mother to leave him. Billy was just about disgusted by Maureen and despised her. And of course that’s the reason why he murdered her.

Wouldn’t it make more sense to theorize that Maureen gave birth Roman while still in Hollywood then returned to Woodsboro? Since Roman had an established life in Hollywood when we meet him. Plus, its be hard to return home pregnant, carry the baby to term, then abandon it. We know she had a sister (Kate) wouldn’t someone close to her have known about the child?

So basically this is what I think happened.
After Roman was rejected he stalked Maureen and made his little movies. Then somehow met and got close enough to Billy to talk to him and tell him why his parents split. Showing him the movies he made as proof. I think for weeks Roman and Billy met and Roman guided him on how to kill. There may have even been another murder we don't know about. All we know is that they both planned it out. Billy ended up getting Stu involved with peer pressure and because Billy more or less took control of him. Meanwhile Roman kept stalking Maureen and eventually found the perfect time to strike knowing Cotton was a drunk. Then that night they snuck in or around the house and waited for Cotton to leave. Sid is most likely asleep at first. Maybe shes not even home yet. We really don't know. Cotton was drunk and when he left he left his jacket. Maybe he wasn't planning on leaving the whole night? Again we don't know. Thats when Billy and Roman made their move. Stu most likely being look out as he's not much of a killer just yet. (Sorry Stu fans. I just don't think a peer pressured kid is going to murder someone just yet. He doesn't have the anger like Billy and Roman obviously does. Plus even as a controlling as they are over him it wouldn't make a lot of sense after the initial attack to have their look out come in and take a stab.) Both Billy and Roman take their frustrations out on Maureen and then they leave. Roman leaves first without making a sound. Billy leaves a bit later taking the jacket and making his hair look more like Cotton. So when Sid eventually opened her bedroom door after she is awakened by a noise (Or she got home while the murder was taking place. Went to her bedroom and then heard the noise) all she thinks she sees is a man leaving. Later she identifies this man as Cotton as all she seen was his backside. She then goes into her mothers room to check on her and bam. She calls 911 and yeah. Roman soon leaves town because its more or less over for him and Billy decides he isn't done yet. So for the next year he and Stu plan and train themselves to be better killers by watching movies. Most likely something Roman said to do earlier.
There are a few factors here. Sid most likely did NOT know her mom was cheating on her dad with Cotton (or anyone) because shes later more or less surprised by the revelation of her moms affairs. She also gets defensive when Gail questions how she knows Cotton is the murderer. Sids witness testimony is obviously rocky because again she may not have been home right away (Wouldn't she notice Cottons car? If she did come home and Cotton already left there wouldn't be a car and if Sid is unaware of his ever being there in the first place there is no need to look for it either. Yet she also swears she seen Cotton because of the jacket so she has clearly seen him wear it before. Maybe Sid didn't know about the affair but seen Cotton often because he was acting as a friend to her mother?) or was asleep in her room (the most likely scenario because you'd think if Sid got home and thought she seen Cotton she would remember seeing his car or not) because I don't believe she knew Cotton was over to sleep with her mom. Sid even remarks that its weird how little she knew her own mother because of all the secrets she kept.
Truth is. A lot of facts are missing to create and entire picture but this is what I got.
Maureen story is not only tragic, but also eerily ahead of its time, I wish they would have explored it a bit more.
She didn’t see her mom get killed. She reacted that way to the re-enacted crime scene in Scream 3 because that is what see saw been she found her mother dead. And the girls in the bathroom gossiping in Scream said that she saw her mom butchered because Sydney was in the house. She did see who see thought was Cotton leaving. That would of been Stew or Billy wearing the same clothes so to frame Cotton.

I don't know if it makes sense for Scream 5, obviously the movies will be connected, but I think they are trying to move the story away from Maureen being the motivation behind everything. I think it would have been an amazing opening for the 3rd movie although the Cotton scene is my favourite part of Scream 3, they could have moved that scene to later in the movie.

Technically, Maureen wasn't a Ghostface victim, as they didn't wear the Ghostface costume during her murder.

The Maureen Prescott backstory was the most shockingly honest thing in the whole series (I don't even count that garbage fourth movie, which was rushed into production to avoid losing series rights). There's a darkness about Hollywood. People get used and spit out.

I think they dated before Maureen's murder. In Scream, Billy says to Sidney in the second scene that only a year and a half prior to the events in the movie, how they "started off hot and heavy, working their way up to an NC-17 relationship. But now lately, we just seem to be edited for television".
So seeing as how Scream 2 takes place a couple years after Woodsboro murders (setting is April 1997), that places the murders of the first movie in 1995, and Maureen's murder in 1994. So Billy and Sidney started dating some time in 1993 when they were freshmen in high school.
So they were together when Maureen hooked up with Billy's father, and Billy's mom left Hank.

My theory on the murder of Maureen.
So Maureen invites Cotton over and they get together. Now Cotton has to sneak inside, so Sidney is unaware he is there. Billy has a phone call from Roman to inform him that Cotton has quietly gone into the house through the backdoor. So Sidney is still not aware of what is happening.
Billy was there with Sidney, maybe they are watching movies downstairs. Sidney begins to fall asleep on the couch with Billy. So he tells her I am off. He goes outside but hides in the near surrounding. He kept close to the house but out of sight.
He waits for cotton to leave.
Now Maureen and Sidney both asleep.
He returns inside and proceeds into the kitchen and grabs a knife. (Yes similar to halloween.)
Heads upstairs quietly. He spots Cotton's jacket on the side and he puts it on.
He first slits her throat to keep her silent.
Proceeds to gut her and as he is leaving, he loudlily shuts the door. That then is intentionally waking Sidney. He begins to walk away in the dark, all the while he is still wearing Cotton's jacket.
Sidney is awoken by the door closing loudly as Billy walks away. Sidney heads outside spotting someone walking away from her house. Thinking Billy had left hours ago, she doesn't believe it is him. But she is only able to recognise the coat and the kind look likes Cotton in the dark as the person is getting away. So she realises something is very wrong, Sideny then goes back inside and heads upstairs to her mother's bedroom. She went to call her and explain she saw who she thinks is Cotton walking away, late in the he night. Only to finds her on the floor butchered.
Rushes to call the police.
She tells them what she thinks she saw. (Remember Sidney was the star witness in the murder trial. But all she saw that is mentioned during a conversation between sideney and Gale.
Sidney "I saw cotton leave, his jacket was covered in her blood."
Gale "no, you saw someone leave with his jacket on. The same someone who planted the jacket in cotton's car framing him."
Now if consider a scene in scream one with Billy standing near Sidney.
And a scene in scream 2 with cotton standing near sidney.
Cotton is 6ft 3"
And Billy is exactly 6ft.
Both similar body features e.g. weight, hair and skin colour.
From behind in the dark while Billy is running..they'd be very difficult to tell apart.

So my theory has always been that Sidney wasn’t supposed to be home that night. Maybe was at Tatum’s house. Maureen invited Cotton over. Cotton leaves the house, forgets his jacket. Billy and Stu were watching, waiting.
They attack and kill Maureen, find the jacket. Are hiding in the house when Sidney comes home. She goes to look for her Ma, finds her. She looks out the window or door in time to see Billy walking away wearing the jacket (maybe Stu had left first?), he looks like Cotton. The guys put the jacket in Cotton’s car
Interestingly, assuming Sidney didn’t know who Cotton was before this, it makes me wonder how he came under suspicion other than fitting a description. Unless he came forward about the affair after hearing about her death. Or someone had spotted the two together.
Gale in Scream 1 said that whoever wore Cotton’s jacket purposefully planted it where they knew it would frame him. Sidney barely had to do any work at all during the trial probably.

But the thing is, why would the cops search Cotton’s car? Unless Sidney already knew who Cotton was. If she didn’t, what was she gonna say?
“I saw a blond man wearing this jacket leaving my house in the middle of the night and it MUST have been this guy who so happens to have a bloody jacket in his car.” Pretty far fetched the cops would find Cotton and the jacket before Cotton found and disposed it.
So I’m honestly guessing that Billy and Stu put in an anonymous call to get the police to tell about the affair and check Cotton’s house the next day
@@rpproductions6241 the forensics liekly didn’t have enough probable cause to look for Billy or Stu’s prints on the jacket, OR hair strands. Once they found Cotton’s DNA on Maureen and her blood on his jacket (I imagine Billy and Stu bloodied it), there truly was very little Sid had to think about. Plus she was 15-16 at the time. A lot of pressure for a teenager to process for a trial.

Sidney says "I saw him leave wearing it", I think if she had witnessed the murder, she would have said something along the lines of "I saw him murder her". I find it more likely that she either was in the house and came out of her room just in time to see Billy-as-Cotton get away, or that she came home after the murder and saw Billy (who had waited for this moment to be seen) wearing Cotton's jacket then. Either way, it is likely that she was the one to find her dead mother, explaining her reaction at the set of Stab 3.

I always found the scene set up in scream 3 referring to Maureen's death a little confusing. It says she was murdered in her home and either Sidney either saw and / or found her. Even in scream 1996 the two girls in the high school bathroom said she saw her mother getting murdered. Take either statement with a pinch of salt, because that could've just been written in as "typical high school gossip". However, I found it odd because in the first movie when Sidney is home alone before she is attacked the first time, she turns on the television to the news channel where Gale was doing a story on the murder. She said that Maureen was found brutally assaulted and murdered not too far from them, in the town square of Woodsboro. Sidney also states she saw Cotton leave wearing his coat with blood on it, and Gale corrects her by saying Sidney only saw someone leave. Presumably she saw someone leave her house, but why state in the first movie Maureen was found somewhere else?
The line is "Only a year ago Maureen Prescott, wife and mother was found raped and
murdered not far from this peaceful town square." It's typical for Gale - dramatizing a bit without really saying anything untrue. "Not far" makes it seem like she is almost at the crime scene, yet it is open enough to still be accurate (her home wasn't too far away from the town square, after all).
The news clip with Gale at the town square was more appropriate because her outside the Prescott home filming that news clip wouldn’t of gone over well with the family.
Two things. First, that woman playing Maureen in the photo with Sydney is actually the casting director Lisa Beach. Second, I CAN'T BELIEVE THEY'RE ACTUALLY CONSIDERING DOING THIS!!! I must be psychic. I said this years ago! Right after Scream 4 was released. I always said that if they do another Scream film it should be a prequel and focus on the murder of Maureen Prescott. Show how it all began and how Maureen's affair with Billy's father set in motion the events of the entire series.
i thought the first movie made it clear that she was raped (either CSI thought that Cotton did it by being too rough, or Stu and Billy assaulted her), and then she was killed? Maybe I'm not understanding how this is a mystery? But love your content!
Because everyone was sure it was Cotton and that it was basically confirmed he was drunk and probably a rough character, they all likely jumped to conclusions. The 2 had sex, his DNA is in hers and given that the murder scene was soooooooo violent, they attributed that it probably wasn't "just sex" but drunken rape.
Sidney was convinced she saw Cotton but didn't believe the rumors of affairs so she assumed he invited himself over, violated her mother and killed her. No one else really "agreed" she was raped. Gale says Cotton admitted they had sex, Billy and Stu simply said Cotton was easy to frame.
When I was younger I thought the same thing: Cotton didn't rape her... Billy and/or Stu did... but I don't think rape actually happened. Sex did, then it was easy to frame the scene in a way that would lead the case to appear to be a rape/murder

Maureen Prescott wasn't murdered in her room. in scream(1996) when sidney was flipping though tv channels and lands on Gale Weather's news story, she clearly says that Maureen was found brutally murderedn not far from the town square of woodsboro. so I'm guessing billy and stu killed her after cotton left, then moved her body. sidney only probably blamed cotton because he was the last person she was with.

Maureen, a twenty something year old goes to Hollywood, gets raped and impregnated, goes home, has the baby, someone else raises the child, the child wants to be a director in highschool runs off to Hollywood, searches the whereabouts of his real mother, looks in the Sunrise studios archives and finds his mother as "Maureen" not "Reina", the file gives her location for Woodsburro, he goes to Woodsburro to shoot an amatuer film of meeting his mother, she blows him off and says she's not his mother, he stays and films her infidelities with other men, finds high school students to murder his mother, shows a tape to the students of his mom cheating with their father(s), they accept and choose to rape and murder her, then wait another year to kill her daughter and husband along with anyone else they feel like killing, he acts in movies, learns to be a director, he waits 5 years after and tries to find his sister to murder her and anyone else he feels like.
OR!
Scenario 2):
John Milton rapes "Reina" and other women, she runs home away from Hollywood, one of the actresses has a child, forces John or another man to raise him, John or the other man raises him to be an actor and director, as a kid he witnesses the rape of women, in high school he learns that his mom isn't his real biological mother, John or other man either tells him it was some random actress or lies and says it was some girl "Reina" because that's all he remembers, Roman searches his father's personal files, he finds "Reina"'s file, he tracks her down in Woodsburro, She tells him she's not his mother, he doesn't accept what she's told him, he stays and creeps on her and realizes she's cheating with men, he uses the creep footage he has to entice a high school student Billy to kill the woman he tells himself is his mother, Billy gets an accomplice Stu, they rape and murder Maureen, they wait one year later after her death to kill again her husband and daughter who Billy tries to sleep with but doesn't, after Billy and Stu are unsuccessful and bring it to the cops attention Roman runs back to Hollywood, there he tries to forget about everything, he acts and looks to direct, the studios greenlight Stab, Roman watches the movies knowing what they're really about, he rapes a woman bringing back the memories, he asks John to direct Stab 3, he tracks Sidney down to tell her what happened and murder her, he kills his (possible father or man who hosted the rape of whom he assumes is his mother) John and others but is unsuccessful in killing Sidney. Later Sidney check's the DNA it doesn't match so she happily moves on with her life.
Which is more believable?
And later on unbeknownst to Sidney there's a mystery man orchestrating the events: possibly Stu, Sidney's "real father" or a 3rd killer from the original murders. Who knows...?! 👻

There might be a lot of flashbacks. Set photos showed Stu's house, 90's police cars and old characters could return in these flashbacks.
@@jamespope7669 because things are often better shown than spoken. The events of Scream and scream 2 and 3 were because of Maureen. So why wouldn't you want a prequel? It might not be the most exciting but the final 20 minutes of the film could be Maureens demise leading into Scream 1 and then end. Wouldn't be much action or suspense in the movie but it would give us more content. Not everybody thinks like I do or like you do so for those of us who would like a prequel, let us have our dreams.
I would actually be into the idea of seeing Maureen’s murder, maybe as an opening to the next film. It could’ve been the opening to Scream 3, since her murder plays a big part in Roman’s plan. To see a flashback of Billy and Stu committing the murder would be 🔥 honestly.
Honestly I do like the whole mystery of Maureens death which started everything. But I somehow feel like Maureen is a horrible person too watching the films. Shes supposed to be a victim, clearly. But I dont know why but she always comes across as an antagonist
it's because feminine sexuality = one of the highest forms of "deviance" as viewed by society, and the film(s) go on to show that by making you feel that way intentionally. it's also the reason there's the whole commentary about virgins in horror films and such. if you've had sex and are a woman, therefore not a virgin (chastity; pure), you're more "deserving" of being killed off/punished in some way
it's one of the reasons imo that Scream is so amazingly clever
@@SurrealCache Yep - the Scream movies (at the very least Scream 1 and 3) are a strong indictment of toxic male entitlement and systemic abuse. I feel that the third movie makes it clear that Maureen was defined by being sexually abused at a young age, and the way this screwed her up hurt others in turn. But a) she wasn't the initial reason, the powerful men who used and abused her were, and b) as Sidney says, the ghostface guys (and one very male-inspired woman) still decide themselves to be murderous pricks - and the movie allows no excuses for that. Which is one reason why I like it - contrary to many other horror movies, it mostly refuses to portray killers as anything but pathetic losers.

@@bo2720 I don't know for sure, of course, but I think it is likely that Milton, the producer of the Stab movies, was a stand-in for Weinstein. Craven has been in the business for a long time then, and he has worked with the Weinsteins for years - it is unlikely he hasn't at least heard rumors.
Even if not, though: The movie makes it clear that it regards sexual abuse in Hollywood as systemic and it draws a direct line from abusive men to femicidal men. The movie as a whole is a bit of a mess, but this part - as well as Sidney's arc - works well and rings true to me.

I've said it many times, Maureen was the 'real' villain in the Scream series.
1.Turned her son into a psychopath by turning her back on him.
2. Cheated repeatedly on her husband with different men.
3. Caused Billy Loomis' family to be destroyed.
4. Got Cotton Weary locked up for a year as he was blamed for her 'murder' (euthanasia really)
5. Set every other Ghostface on the path of murder and madness.
6. Shamed and traumatized her poor daughter.
That lady was disgusting and one of the poorest examples of a human being.

One things I’ve always wondered is how did Billy’s mom find out her husband was sleeping with Maureen? Billy obviously knew why his mom left his dad and abandoned the family but did anyone else know? Did Billy tell her after Roman showed his the video he took of his dad and Maureen meeting at the hotel? Rewatching the first movie I often theorize how she found out in the first place.
I like these brilliant Theory's
1) Why would Neil have continued to live and raise his young daughter in the same house where their wife/mother was butchered? Especially if his daughter saw her die. I can't see it.
3) Who did find her? Scream 3 seems to hint it was Sidney who found her in her bedroom - again, I can't see them staying in their home after such a trauma.
4) Sidney testified against Cotton - what was her testimony?
5) If everyone knew about Maureen and her lovers; did no one but Gail believe Cotton?
6) Trials take time, especially death penalty cases. How long were Billy and Sidney together?
sidney found her mom, her testimony was that she saw what she thought to be Cotton walking out of the house, it was infact Billy wearing Cotton's jacket and having similar hair. Billy framed Cotton. She didnt say she saw him kill, she said who she saw walk out. And considering Cotton was just banging Maureen (later falsely assumed rape, even though the wiki says Billy and Stu raped her it's up for debate)and seconds later killed, and Cotton was shady anyway, he was the obvious suspect.
and Sidney and Billy were together for a year and a half, meaning they were dating before Billy killed her mother. The trial was fairly quick because it was a cut and dry case pretty much.
What gets me is if Sydney's never seen cotton before how did she know it was cotton who left the house? How was she able to identify a man she's never seen before and from the back nonetheless. Unless cotton had been around and she knew of cotton before her mom's death. Sydney probably had a feeling something was more with her mom in Cotton but it's her mom so she chose to swept it under the rug. In order for her to pinpoint cotton weary and say it was him without a doubt who left the house she had to have seen/met him prior to that. Not to mention in all the scream movies majority of people on Maureen Prescott side of the family are mentally damaged. Sydney could start to exhibit some of that behavior, maybe she knew her mom was having an affair and she just didn't want to break her dad's heart. How did she not know there was another man in the house aka cotton? Then billy and stu after cotton left.
my theory is that the police probably found out from ppl in the town that maureen was having affairs with various men, found that one of the men was cotton, then had sidney see if she recognises him in a police line up.

Well it wasn't very thorough out murder not only because it is a movie but also the murder plot would have made more sense if the murder of Maureen was 3 years earlier only because of Sidney age ,and so forth
I was under the impression that sidney came home and somehow bypassed the killer and she saw someone who was wearing cottons clothes after they had killed her mum. sidney goes up to her mums bedroom and finds her.

I always wondered about Sidney and where she was that night. Her statement that 'she saw him leave in Cotton's coat' suggests that she was in the house when Maureen was murdered, but if so, why didn't she realise that somebody else was in the house with her mother, and why didn't she hear her mother being murdered. I think from what little bread crumbs we are given, to me Sidney I think maybe heard and then by the time she checked found her mom’s dead body and looked out the window and saw Billy, thinking it was Cotton. I don’t know where Stu went after, but to frame Cotton Sidney could not see both leaving. As for if Billy and or Stu did anything to Maureen is tought cause Sidney says in the beginning Cotton forced himself, that her mom would never be interested, obviously that’s wrong they had an affair. I don’t know if both Billy and Stu did; if anything I’m sure Billy would have to show power, humiliate her, etc. But yes, would’ve found *ahem* evidence, I don’t see him putting on a condom, but 🤷🏼♀️. I don’t think Stu would’ve. And yeah, I don’t think they wore the Ghostface costume until Casey. So, maybe the whole rape thing was just Cotton and Maureen having sex and then after Billy and Stu definitely were physically abusing her as they killed her; and that’s where the confusion is. Billy, I wouldn’t put it past him, but he wasn’t a suspect, so that’s why there’s a big doubt in it. On second thought, they found no other evidence of Billy or Stu: hair, finger prints, etc. 🤔

I still think Neil Prescott played a part in Maureen's murder. If Roman showed Billy that footage...don't you think he would have shown Neil the same footage to break up her marriage and ruin her life? People assume Roman was talking about Stu when he said he told Billy to have a partner to sell out. Maybe it was Neil that they double crossed to set up for all the murders. He was the third partner. It would make sense that he let Billy and Stu in the house that night to kill Maureen. It seemed pretty neglectful of him to plan a business trip on the first anniversary of Sydney's mother's murder. There was no empathy. He didn't even ask question her mental well being about how she was doing. The police never were able to find confirm whether he arrived at his destination...most likely because he never truly had a reservation to begin with. Her father was also one of two people that knew her location and phone number in Scream 3. We certainly know Dewey didn't give it to Roman. That leaves her father, who, once again...was working with Roman. Roman may have not revealed this secret as he viewed Neil as the ace in hole...someone to carry on his plan if he failed. However, after so many failed attempted by other, maybe Neil decided it was in his best interest to let sleeping dogs lie. He did, after all, get away with murder. As for a motive...maybe there is one secret not yet revealed. Maybe in Roman's recons...he discovered the truth...that Neil was not Sydney's father.
