During the parade, several of the people seen dancing (including the construction worker and the window washer) originally had nothing to do with the film. They were simply dancing to the music being played, and John Hughes found it so humorous that he told the camera operators to record it.
Part of his genius. That's always been an image that makes me feel... good about humanity, to be honest, everybody just getting into it. And it's all the better that A) it was real, and B) Hughes recognized how positive it was
Someone on the crew saw them and pointed it out.
Broderick's moves were choreographed by Kenny Ortega (who later choreographed Dirty Dancing). Much of it had to be scrapped though as Broderick had injured his knee badly during the scenes of running through neighbors' backyards. "I was pretty sore", Broderick said. "I got well enough to do what you see in the parade there, but I couldn't do most of Kenny Ortega's knee spins and things like that that we had worked on. When we did shoot it, we had all this choreography and I remember John would yell with a megaphone, 'Okay, do it again, but don't do any of the choreography,' because he wanted it to be a total mess." "Danke Schoen" was somewhat choreographed but for "Twist and Shout", Broderick said, "we were just making everything up". Hughes explained that much of the scene was spontaneously filmed. "It just happened that this was an actual parade, which we put our float into-unbeknownst to anybody, all the people on the reviewing stand. @@deacongowan909 Actually that's only partially right, it did exist then, kind of. It was a simple network and it wasn't called "the internet" yet. Heck, they even had email. Only real smart computer nerds knew how to use it, or computers for that matter.
@@robertmolton6761 He wasnt using any kind of internet. He was using a modem to call computers directly. A technology that has been available since the mid 1960's and was common place in IT companies and centres of learning.

Full Disclosure: I went to film school in the early "80's". My first job was as a Production Assistant on this movie. John Hughes had most of the actors improvise alot of the dialog. That's probably why some scenes seemed disjointed. Also most of that parade was real. No extra's. (I was in that crowd somewhere.) They just got permission from the city of Chicago and shot most of those scenes with hand held cameras.(Yes, they had steady cams in 1985). John used the real people from the parade,(including the construction workers, etc..) Parts of the parade were filmed in post production, but still in Chicago. After, I was one of the many PA's running around chasing down random people sign releases for the movie. Overall it was one the best weeks of my life, and I even got paid for it.

Matthew Broderick and his on-screen sister Jennifer Gray became a couple on-set also. The year after Ferris, and just a few weeks before Dirty Dancing opened, the two decided to take a romantic trip to Ireland. Sadly the trip ended with two women dead and Broderick in hospital, and potentially facing 5 years in an Irish jail. Very tragic.
The art gallery scene is probably my most favorite scene in all of film. I just love the music, the fun, the love, the acting, the art, the pain and how they all work together to paint a beautiful picture. It’s perfect.

A detail that I love about this, is that Ferris complains early on that he got a computer for his birthday instead of a car. Near the end, his mom tells Jeanie that if she hadn't had to leave work, she would have gotten a big commission, and bought Ferris a car with it. So Ferris unknowingly screwed himself out of getting a car.
I like the idea that this connects to his David Lightman character in War Games.
Reversing a car does not work ANYMORE it did work however on some cars. Used to have a neighbor who rolled his back on jacks every couple weeks in good weather.

I enjoy the theory that this is all Cameron’s fever dream. But to me the more plausible and deeper idea is that Ferris planned this whole day MAINLY to help his troubled and depressed friend Cameron. Being Ferris of course, he also relished the idea of pulling off an elaborate scam on the school and his parents. But we can sort of save him from truly being an “asshole” if we take seriously that Ferris’ true motive is to stage a kind of mental health day for Cameron.
you wouldn't think that if they kept the deleted scene where ferris tells his father I bet you don't even remember where you put the bonds you bought genie and I just to get the cash for that day :D

@@sandrasnow-balvert7766 If they rewrote the entire script, to where Ferris offed somebody, it would be completely different too. It doesn't really matter what they MIGHT have done or SHOWN us. We saw what they WANTED to show us, so we got what we got. I think you should just enjoy the movie that IS, not the movie that COULDHAVE BEEN or you imagined.
I've never heard any of the things you said, not do I like or agree with them. Also, I NEVER thought that Ferris was an asshole at all, just a kid who wanted to skip school, and being a kid who could actually pull it off. I've known many kids growing up that were just like this ... always getting pretty much what they wanted, without having to try. He hurt no one ... Rooney did it to himself.
The museum scene and music is so incredibly special to me.

That was my reaction first time I saw it too. He seems kind of selfish and cruel until we find out what a righteous dude he is.
Someone had to point out to me that Ferris is pretty much a complete dick all the way through. Not only was he right, but I had to take a long look at myself after that!
But he's a very ENTERTAINING asshole, and for a movie that's meant to be entertaining, that's all I need. ;)

Ferris Bueller’s day off is the perfect sick day movie to watch.
I was a "Cameron Frye" type person but good thing I had a "Ferris" type friend, we had fun.
I'm from Chicago, and its definitely not possible to do all the stuff Ferris did in a single day. However, I love this movie so it didn't stop my friends and I from trying lol. I was a teen in the late 90's and most people my age were huge fans of this movie, so it wasn't uncommon to plan a trip to the city with many of the elements from the movie involved. You could probably do it all if you had a full weekend.
Growing up in Chicago in the 90's, the movies we saw all the time that we loved (mostly because they were 'Chicago movies) were this and The Fugitive (Harrison Ford, another Chicago native).
Cubs game and Shedd aquarium is very possible, oktoberfest? Most happen in September, so the cubs would still be playing

@@RevStickleback I lived in the area where "Twin Peaks" was filmed & could not help but recognize they were driving down the road, then driving down the same road but from further back down the same stretch.
I can't put my finger on why, but my favorite bit in this film has always been Cameron's scream and the cuts to the various statues... it's as though his angst and crisis are something that philosophers through all ages are contemplating

In my headcanon, Charlie Sheen's character in the police station scene is a young Ricky "Wild Thing" Vaughn.
John Hughes took an ad out in several papers announcing EXTRAS NEEDED for the parade scene.. I didn’t go but remember seeing it in the Sun Times. I actually ended up meeting him at a bookstore in Northbrook court a year later and was nice enough to take the time to talk to me about Film ( I was a film student at Columbia at the time) he told me before Sixteen Candles he was never on a movie set and the gave me perhaps the BEST ADVICE I ever got as a student filmmaker which I’ll share with you and this is a quote, “Dont get caught up in the technical aspects of filmmaking. Everything begins and ends with the story. A movie can be poorly filmed but if the story is good? The audience won’t notice and even better? Won’t care”… I’ve shared this story with several colleagues who have worked with John who ALL said I must have caught him on a good day. He was notoriously moody and very aloof but I’ll always be grateful to this Icon for taking the time to stand there in a crowded bookstore to answer my questions.. RIP John and thank you!

The movie theater where I saw this had a handmade sign at the box office telling people to stay all the way through to the end ot the credits.
The movie came out the summer before I started high school. My high school experience ended up being very much NOT like this.
When you go to the top floor of the Sears tower, if you stand on the railing with your head against the glass, not only can you see the street below, but you can feel the building sway.
This movie had WAY TOO MUCH effect on me as a teen. It caused me to take off to NYC with my best friend for a day trip when we were both supposed to be in school. We had a Ferris adventure and he wrecked my car on the way back. Still best friends 35+ years later. And I can still do the opening monologue - used it to audition for years.

Somewhere here in the UA-cams, someone DID try and map out whether Ferris' day was possible. If I recall correctly, they did determine that *technically* it WAS possible, but you wouldn't have been able to "experience" any of the things they did (i.e. they could only spend an inning at the Cubs game, 20 minutes at the art museum, etc..)
I heard on the UA-cam'S that Chicago isn't real ..just a Hollywood backlot with fake buildings....kinda think I believe it.
My favorite scene in this movie is when he's racing to beat his sister home and he passes two girls sunbathing and comes back to introduce himself.
If you like high school movies, try 3 O'Clock High.

The walk through the Museum is one of my favorite scenes in the movie. The interaction with the elementary students and Cameron’s relationship with the small girl in the painting capture two book ends of life.
My favorite seen is Rooney & his secretary & the quote: "He's a righteous dude".
I remember it being a big deal to hear Star Wars music in anything back then. You couldn't see Star Wars any old time, so just hearing the music briefly like this was awesome.

I remember renting Star Wars on video in/around 84 and Empire in 85. Saw this in theaters upon release and definitely had seen the original trilogy at home by that point.
The actors who played Ferris’s parents met while making this movie and got married shortly thereafter. The marriage didn’t last but they did have two kids 🙂 If you do hear from an extra in this movie _please_ share it on your channel 🤗 Also Edie McClurg is a treasure 👏👏

My husband and my friends actually tried visiting all the stops that Ferris and co. did in the movie about 8 years ago as part of a Groupon deal that was doing a screening of the movie at Wrigley Field. We were able to do everything except visit the stock exchange, which was closed to the public, the parade (no parades that day) and the ballgame and it still took a full day to do everything (including the time driving back and forth to the suburbs).
ahhhh I would LOVE THAT. I want to do this!! I thought the ballgame might be hard because that's usually and all-day production in and of itself. This is so fun though!
The one time I tried to fake being sick to stay home from school, my mom saw through it and put me to work: "Since you're here, the house needs vacuuming, and while you're doing the laundry you can mop the kitchen floor; etc." Filled my day with enough chores to make school seem preferable!
I saw this movie in school, probably a last day before Christmas or summer vacation, when I was in grade 6 or 7. I was one of the kids the teacher regretted showing this film to lol... took some of the underlying message to heart. Definitely one of my most quoted movies. Whenever I hear someone repeatedly calling someone’s name, I start saying “Bueler, Bueler...”. People look at me like I’m crazy

Ferris has a Killing Joke banner in his room that I just noticed for the first time. Which is a pretty cool thing.
Hughes wrote a backstory for Charlie Sheen's character. He is the son of the potential real estate sale that Ferris' mom is trying to make.
there was also a dropped subplot about Sheen's character being a childhood friend of Ferris who had an upbringing almost exactly like Cameron but had a total meltdown, and he was trying to save his friend from that same fate.
And his character's name? Ricky Vaughn.

I never had a stay home from school move. My parents were way too smart for that. But then again I was sick regularly as a child. Plus I wasn’t the kind of person Ferris is.

My dad got tired of me ditching and started dropping me off at the entrance to the school. Once or twice I just waited until he drove off, then turned around and walked a mile home.

In English class for my senior year I wrote a paper with an outline and timeline of how these events couldn’t have happened in one day and got an A on it. I actually tried a “Ferris Bueller” events day the only time I went to Chicago and it didn’t work out so stretched it out to a few days. Easily one of my favorite movies though.
My parents were at work by the time my alarm for school would go off, so it was all on me from the get go! Skipping school is only fun if you're doing it with someone else, that's for sure. Otherwise its just depressing! lol
"What country do you think this is??" ... Classic 80's hit movie. It came out just as I was entering high school and may have lead me to skip a sunny day or two back in the day. Love it!!

My junior high school had a weird rule. If you got caught skipping school twice, they would (out of school) suspend you for two days.

The one time I got caught skipping they gave me an option. Three days inside school suspension or two days outside. I managed to not break out laughing because I figured the Dean wouldn't understand the lunacy of the situation. I took the two days, they were the Friday before and Monday after Spring break.
I only got an out-of-school suspension once in high school. It was on opening day for the local baseball team.
Sure learned my lesson! 😁

Shanelle, Ferris Bueller's Day Off was so influential in my life that the day I got drunk for the first time in my life - what happened at a winery, during my class's graduation trip from high school - I went up to the dinner table and I sang "Twist and Shout", with my class doing the chorus! It was a memorable day ... Here in Brazil the movie's name was "translated" into "Curtindo a Vida Adoidado", something like "Enjoying Life Like Crazy". I don't like these "translations" for movie titles, but this is one of those that most closely matches the film.
I wasn't born yet when this film was made and I didn't grow up in the US but somehow it's still so relatable.

I didn't miss many full days in HS, but I did skip a bunch of 1st and 2nd-period classes and slept in. The key was, I became friends with the secretaries ('assistant' today, but I am old, and that's what they were called back then), especially the ones on reception and the Dean of Students... I could call in, say 'Oh, I'm feeling a little feverish, but I'm gonna pop an aspirin and drink some OJ and see if that helps", then snooze a couple extra hours. Didn't end up on the absent-from-class list.
The key was one time I did an all-nighter trying to study for a history test. Took it, then fell asleep in the lobby, missing post-class gym. Which was required, so it was reported I missed it. Turns out, the secretary saw me asleep as she was leaving and skipped me on the missed-attendance sheet the next day... I was at school, after all.

This is John Hughes' masterpiece. This film is absolutely flawless and I never get tired of watching it. On a side note, THIS is how people dressed in high school in the 1980s! At least at my school. It wasn't all neon and big hair like Saved by the Bell. Mostly jeans and t-shirts for the guys. A lot of the cool girls dressed like Sloane. The biggest 80s fashion sins were committed by the adults at that time. We made fun of the guys who flipped their collars up.
Saved By the Bell started around 1988. Fashion from about 1981-1985 was relatively conservative compared to the 70's, late 80's, and early 90's.
This film is one of my go-to comfort films as well as one of my favorite films in general, because Matthew talking with the camera really allows me to be immersed in the story, plus the comedic acting and heartwarming moments between the three friends really help to put a smile on my face. I just love this movie!
This is one of my favorite movies! When my 3 older kids were about age 12-13, I started showing them my favorite 80s movies. This is one of their favorites. After I made them watch this, my oldest daughter invited all of her friends over and made them watch it too. They LOVED it!

I've been on a "reaction channel" rabbit hole for about a month now; some reactors I really enjoy, others not so much. This is my first time visiting your channel, but I can already tell: You are for sure one of the good ones. Obviously you are coming at this with some film experience already; hearing you comment on film angles, editing techniques, etc. is super fun. There are simply SO many films that have been made over the past 100+ years; someone in their 20s, even an avid student of film, cannot be expected to have seen everything already; it takes time to soak it all in. I'm in my 40s, have seen LOTS of films, and yet there are still many films widely considered "classics" that I have simply not seen yet. And, of course, there are those favorites I have seen hundreds of times. ("Ferris.." is one of those favorites. Though it was made in the mid-80s, and I went through high school in the mid-90s, I feel a strong connection to the high school experience. You said much the same: this film transcends decade, speaking to some universals about the teenage experience.) Watching an avid film buff such as yourself enjoying these now-classic films from the past several decades is a joy. You "get it," and your commentary reflects your deep love of films. I'm an 80s kid, and we were all so guilty of skipping school. No one thought we would die like Ferris, but especially our female teachers, we knew we were at home on a beautiful day getting our 'prom tan.' Skipping high school, especially your senior year, was easy. No one really cared. Our teachers were probably glad that we were gone! and they didn't have to deal with us in class. 🤣 I don't blame them. Having raised teenagers, I find it fun but not fun at the same time. We were ready to send them off to college.
Growing up in the 80s with all of these legendary movies was the best. We grew up at the same time they did from Breakfast Club until we graduated from college, but we didn't know what to do with ourselves in St. Elmo's Fire. We grew up in high school and graduated from college with John Hughes. We miss him. We could use him now as we are all grandparents. RIP Mr. Hughes - thank you for helping us through our teens in the 80s!
Hey, I never realized that Jennifer Grey was married to Agent Coulson. They have a grown daughter & everything (she looks a lot like her mom).

@@boghag Yeah, Jennifer Grey got a nose job and didn't look like herself anymore. She actually said it hurt her career, the opposite of what one would expect in most cases.

I cried my eyes out when Hohn Hughes died so young from a heart attack on a vacation. He made so many movies in such a short time . I’m so sad we didn’t get to enjoy and relish in his talents for decades longer . Gone wayyyy tooo soon

@@pebblesanddirt Actually, I've just watched the scene in full again, maybe she did watch it all as the 'ROONEY EATS iT' graffiti does appear very much at the end...it did surprise me that she didn't find it at all funny though with the _Alright, enough of this scene, I'm over it let's go..._ But hey, we all have different senses of humour I guess!

Then after noticing the obligatory 'SAVE FERRIS' artwork on the boy's folder...he becomes the ONLY other character to break the fourth wall in the film apart from its titular character.

9 months too late but to add my two cents - Ferris Bueller is one of my family's favourite movies and we quote it all the time, especially my mum and I. I've also had shirts that say Save Ferris on them and they always get people in the know to smile! Now that I'm older, I can definitely appreciate it even more and it brings back one fun memory in particular. At my high school, we were allowed to have a day off school to visit universities if there was an open day, as long as we had parents permission. Well, I was semi curious about a school in London and I convinced my boyfriend to say he was interested too so that we could go. The tour was only twenty minutes or so and we spent the rest of the day walking around and playing in London, not getting back to school until dinner (boarding school) - our friends were BEYOND annoyed that we'd managed it!
I introduced my twelve year old to this the other day. She thought it would be blah. Guess what? She thought it was hysterical and absolutely loved it. That is the beauty of Ferris Bueller. Everyone loves it.

What was my stay home from school move in high school? "Mom, I need a mental health day. I'm not going in tomorrow." I was allowed 2 a semester.

My mom would have looked at me and laughed in my face. Plus, I don’t think the phrase “mental health” existed n 1992 when I was in high school.
@@pebblesanddirt Well, it was the phrase we used in my house in 1990. Mental health, personal day, same thing - I'm sleeping in and ain't going anywhere.
I got to skip any day we had a field trip. There would be no tests or assignments that day, and my mom could avoid paying for a ticket to whatever museum or other such place we were going, so it was a win-win.
Highschool day I remember best. I attended a tiny highschool in SoCal back in the 80s that had just been formed/created 4 yrs before I started attending. So everything is still kinda new and close knit. They had a policy for "Senior ditch day" for seniors to go out and have fun, like going to Magic Mountain. So we as Juniors thought this as kinda lame, being a planned day is not ditching. So we decided, a class of only 24, to have our own ditch day. This is remarkable as our class was very diverse for it's small size, dweebs, athletes, brainiacs, the whole gambit and rarely agreed on anything. We had to figure out stories, coordinate picking people up, some at their home, others after they had been dropped off at school. We also had to plan on getting everyone home afterwards, I did a lot of driving that day as I had access to a 1969 VW Bus. So we all ended up meeting at a Dairy that the family of one classmate rented. (They already had max cows on one farm and renting another nearby was only way to expand) So only hired hands were there and didn't care as long we were out of the way. So main rule was everyone had to be included in whatever we did. We jumped off one of the barns into pile of hay. We had races down a hill using modified playground slides. We drove around in all the old junker cars they had collected and raced them at bit. Played lots of other games. Had a simple BBQ, hotdogs, hamburgers and watermelon. Just horsing around and having a great day. Last thing a few of us did, including me, after getting those who needed rides home, was to go to the Church "spaghetti dinner" which was across from the school. So a number of the teachers were there, both from Highschool and Elementary. We had fun telling them of our day and reassuring them no one had be hurt or mistreated even though we were not supervised. Of course the day came to an end and sad part was a few of the "good" girls refused to come with us that very morning because they thought it would be put on their permanent record and might get a F for the day. So because they did not go, we did end up with Fs for the day, at least that was the explanation we received. It is still a great memory and our class definitely bonded and became more cohesive than we were before.
Saw this in theatre in my teens and I loved it. A few years ago, I was travelling across the states and stopped in Chicago for a few days. I planned a day where I went to as many John Hughes locations as I could in one day. So, the Bueller school, water tower, the place where Cameron freaks out which also happens to be at the end of the road where the Sixteen Candles church is. I saw the Home Alone house, the building where ferris' mom works, The Modern Art museum and the Willis (formerly Sears) tower. A long but fun day! Glad you enjoyed it and you really seem to get Hughes' humour and story telling.
This is probably the first John Hughes I saw, but Breakfast Club will always be my favorite. Weird Science has slipped down the list in recent years, but remains one of JH's funniest movies too.

This is the second movie that Matthew Broderick hack his school's computer to alter his records. The first was WarGames.
wish more would react to that movie. But maybe it just doesn't hold up with the fear we had back then during the cold war. Knowing nukes were always ready to go.
@@tomyoung9049 Yeah, it's weird when I hear young people say that people didn't have much to worry about during the eighties. It was a great time to be a kid, but the world was a much scarier place.
I´ll be honest. The few times I even dared to try and get off school, I stole all my moves from Ferris.
I ditched school many times. My homeroom teacher was too nice and said it would be OK if I wrote my own sick notes and just had my dad sign it, which was not a real signature of course.
I saw this movie less than a week after I graduated. I remember wishing I'd seen it earlier. It gave me ideas I wanted to try, lol. Too late.

The one line I used every since I saw this movie in high school, in the 80s, is the "niiine times" I find myself saying that every single time 9 comes up in a conversation.
A year after this movie came out, I was Motel in our high school production of "Fiddler On The Roof".... When our school did musicals, our final dress rehearsals were known for pranks and Easter eggs before we got serious for Opening Night.... In a scene that took place in a Russian bar, I had a huge "Save Ferris" sign placed behind the bartender

It might be the most purely John Hughes thing John Hughes ever did, and I love it. Even in the moments where you should want to smack Ferris, Matthew Broderick has enough charm to get away with it. Though that scene with Charlie Sheen is a little eerie in retrospect...
I'd just stay home. My school was so slack they hardly ever noticed or asked for excuse notes, so I'd keep ones from actual sick days and use them when I'd fake a sick day if they asked.
In 1999, me and a friend got picked up by the cops for some mischief, and while sitting in the waiting room, we did the "Drugs?" bit at a couple of girls who were there for similar reasons. One of them replied "Oh, I love that movie!" to which we responded in unison "Well I should say you do!" in the George Peterson voice. Ahh, good times.
In a city near where I lived growing up there stood a pair of industrial-sized smokestacks leftover from a demolished structure. Someone, somehow, painted “SAVE FERRIS” on them, high up. It remained there for many years until the smokestacks were eventually demolished, too.
This is my favorite Hughes movie, and one of my favorite films, period.
