  • The 2024 Subaru BRZ tS ($36,465 in the US, $38,667 in Canada) is an all-new top-tier manual trim for the BRZ, with some new performance and visual goodies. It is powered by the same 2.4L boxer 4-cylinder that makes 228 horsepower, but the tS has Brembo brakes, Hitachi dampers tuned by STI, and a smattering of exclusive badges and styling. But is it worth the price jump over the less expensive trims? And how is it to drive in the California canyons? Thomas and James are excited to find out! We hope you enjoy the episode. SUBSCRIBE!

      Did a quick search of 2013-2015 sub 100k mile brzs that are within 500 miles of me (Philly)….there are 10 on Autotrader with a manual. Only 1 was near 10k (10,700)….had rear end damage a fugly new hood and looked rough. You’re looking at about 15-17k for a decent older one. Gen 2 is materially better in most ways with potentially only downside being steering feel. Well worth the 32-35k you’ll have to pay.

    It’s very easy to unplug the artificial engine noise generated (ASC) by removing a single trim panel in the passenger door jam. It would be nice if it was a setting in the head unit instead.
    Agree the steering is a disappointment. There’s also a well-known issue that the power steering is overwhelmed and cuts out at higher lateral G. I experience it every lap at Sonoma and Thunderhill East even on low grip tires and stock suspension.
    These Brembos are an absolutely fantastic deal. I have the AP Racing front BBK on my 2022 BRZ, but I would be perfectly happy running this Brembo set (and for cheaper than the front-only AP Endurance BBK).
    An oil cooler is a pretty easy-to-add aftermarket mod, but if it came from the factory it would be very cool if they added one with active shutters. If they had a fix for the pressure drops on FA24, I would expect them to bring it to all trim levels!

    • @jaron95
      @jaron95 2 місяці тому +5

      ^^^ This guy knows a thing or two about the ZD8s. I wonder if the difference in steering feel has to do with the front knuckle? Didn't Subaru change from aluminum to iron in the 2024s?
      Personally I've been waiting for the BRZ tS since August and ordered one as soon as I could in December. The factory brake upgrade and blue interior accents with blacked out center console are worth the extra price to me.

    • @900BRZ
      @900BRZ 2 місяці тому +6

      @@jaron95 I believe only the TS is using the cast iron knuckle (but other ‘24s will use aluminum) because it allows fitting the harmonic weight with the Brembo brakes. My ’22 uses an aluminum knuckle. I think most of the steering differences between the GR86 and the BRZ are due to the EPS tuning. The BRZ is weighted heavier but for some reason the EPS seems to cut out earlier on the BRZ than the GR86, despite less assist.
      All things considered, I think the TS is a great deal!

      the car does have a factory oil cooler, its an oil to water cooler that was a fairly popular mod for the first gen cars. its not an amazing unit, but it helps warm the car up faster and stay cooler overall.

    • @900BRZ
      @900BRZ 2 місяці тому +1

      @@BeastMode1210 Yeah I’m referring to an air-to-oil cooler. With the factory coolant-to-oil heat exchanger, it’s to exceed 270° F on the track. Even if modern synthetic oils can tolerate that, it reduces the viscosity of the oil significantly.

    Factory mods sometimes make sense. Rather than spending an extra $5000 on a stock BRZ, you can upgrade to similar, if not the same parts for $2600, in lieu of the standard equipment that you would have had left over and sitting around after the mods. 🏎️

    I ordered a tS after selling my MY02 AP1 S2000. The S2K was fairly heavily modified for track days, which made it kinda useless as a DD. The BRZ is going to be a DD for 95% of its life, with very occasional track play days. It will also fit my gravel bike and my wife and I can go away for weekend road trips and actually pack more than a toothbrush. Even stock, the BRZ is likely faster on the track than most drivers are good. At my local track, here in Ontario, the guys and gals with the biggest grins are those driving underpowered cars to the limit. If you want to learn how to be fast, start with a Miata or BRZ. As my old instructor said, 'First you get smooth, fast comes all by itself.'

    I was such a massive car guy for my entire (32 yo) life, like you all, but this is the first review i’ve watched in months. Affordable (new) car enthusiasm is largely extinct and it has made me resign to the fact that I need to let my passion die 😢 I’m lucky to have great public transit, but affordability and my own outlook has made it impossible for me to even maintain my E30, considering I need a garage to keep it on the road which I cannot, or likely ever, afford.
    I’m having good fun with electric micro-mobility, and believe it’s a far more enjoyable way to get around a city, which is such an un-fun environment to drive. I’m bitter that I’ll never live out my motoring dreams, but my limited money going into this rather bleak future is better spent elsewhere.
    RIP motoring passion.

      Is this some kind of an attempt at a psyop? There's no chance car enthusiasm ever goes away once it gets hold of you, sure it can get expensive and sometimes it doesn't always go according to plan but a true enthusiast never throws in the towel. There's plenty of affordable non-new fun cars out there that don't rot, I really wanted an NA MX-5 but I don't have a garage and the salty UK roads in winter mean that I couldn't use it as much as I'd like, so I actually ended up going for a 986 Boxster instead. They don't rust like the MX-5s and they're more comfortable to daily and the running costs aren't bad. Don't give in, just adapt and keep driving!

Some people go, well for another couple grand you could get an older cayman or whatever. No, get the 86/brz and throw that couple grand at the car in mods. because holy hell with some small tweaks; exhaust, engine tweaks. These cars become absolute hoon machines. There is a reason there is a sub 30mph traction button. You can have soooo much fun at under 30mph kicking the rear end out a T junction and so on. Fantastic machines, will absolutely miss mine.

    3. Put on STI functional accessories like lateral link set, v bar, draw stiffener, spoiler, forged wheels, short shifter, shift knob.

    1:11 is spot on. My local Toyota / Subaru dealers are on the same plot of land, drove them back to back and wanted something that felt a little more sporty and ended up with the 86.
    When looking at things like an M2, M240, M4, Supra, Cayman, Corvettes, they all felt a little numb as a street car at the speeds I drive 99.9% of the time on tertiary back roads where you spend most of your time in the 45-55mph range due to how tight, twisty and limited viability.

    Would love to see the basic BRZ driven back to back with this tS. IMO, the price bump feels steep to go to the tS, but that is because my '17 Limited could be had with a "Performance Pack", that was only at $ 1200 adder. That included the Brembo brakes, different (I think half an inch wider) wheels, and SACHS dampers. I'm intrigued by the power that this new gen makes, but not impressed by so many reviewers pointing out that the steering has lost something. The RTV problem doesn't help either.

    As an owner of a very early production 2022 BRZ owner I would not trade my car for the TS. I have heard too many complaints about the "upgraded" suspension. The Brembos are just for looks really. These cars are so small and light you do not need massive brakes. Slap some better pads on a base or premium model and some good fluid and they will stop just as well as those show off brakes. And last..... Eyesight. I do not want it in my sports car. All 2024 models have it and that makes me extra glad to have the 2022.

    Agree 100%. This version is only for the non-mod crowd and there are many; however that crowd doesn’t need the break kit and suspension upgrade either. Just another example of tweaking options to draw in more attention to the car and why its seems a bargain to get it all for $2,600 you are still $2,600 lighter in the wallet for something you don’t need.

      If that’s the case, I’m really glad I have a ‘23 version. Also, the stock damping feels pretty perfect for the road, too.
      Since the new Hirachi dampers seem tuned for the track, why not just add some other small options to complete the package as Thomas suggested: an oil cooler, some aero bits, bracing, better tires, etc. You don’t need to focus on the obvious oil starvation issue-it’s the track version, lol! :)

    I own a 2015 BRZ Aozora Edition (tS in Japan at the time) that comes with an STI push-button start and an upgraded suspension with all of the blue stitching, leather and the alcantara. SO much for a BRZ.. but such purchase would make you think about keeping it low mileage and keeping it stock and clean as an option in the garage, maybe an exhaust and a nice set of wheels would make it more interesting. More like a car to collect because everyone modifies them. Some day someone would want a bone stock good looking little car that also has a special interior and driving experience.
    Mine is one of 200s in North America (half World Rally Blues and half Whites). At the time I wanted a sport-tech but got the special edition for the same price, and till today it's as clean as it came out of the factory.
    In my opinion this tS and this generation 86/BRZ in general is not as good as the first gen.
    I would never sell mine because it is such a great car to drive.

    Got me a 2016 BRZ and I'll be keeping it. They just haven't improved the newer models in any real way. The FA24 engine's HP/TQ bump is nice, but it comes with an oil starvation problem. And I don't like the second-gen's styling changes. If they fix the oil starvation and give us a turbocharged engine, I might reconsider.

    The "tS" upgrade can make sense if you plan on tracking your car and don't want to go hog wild on the mods. I can personally attest that on track an intermediate driver can induce "brake fade" in under 20 minutes; even on a cool damp day. So the Brembo's are a worthy upgrade. I suppose if you're gonna do coil overs, you can always sell the stock struts with the Hitachi dampers. So the ST package can be a cost effective move. In addition, the lack of steering feel is a quizzical issue? I wonder if a combination of camber bolts and bushing upgrades can address that problem?

    I really wish subaru had kept the 3.0 H6 and put it in this car. What was the point of developing a 6 cylinder engine that fits in the footprint of your 4 cylinder engines if you never put it in anything cool? Plus all that extra torque low down would be amazing on this platform.

    • @bearclaw5115

      That engine was extremely heavy and thirsty. The car's handling would be completely ruined. And realistically the BRZ makes about 240hp. The H6 only made 256hp although with better torque. The H6 was not developed as a sportscar engine, more of a work duty engine.
      My mom had one in her Outback. It did sound much nicer than the 2.4 in the BRZ!

    Instead of a tS version, I would love a BRZ GT where they swapped in a version of the EZ 6 cylinder engine modified for a higher redline, preferably still using the direct and port injection system from the FA24, as well as their variable valve timing. That would solve the power problem for all of the people asking for a turbo without introducing turbo lag, while also dramatically improving the exhaust note. If I'm not mistaken, the EZ36 is also less of a weight increase over the FA24 than adding a turbo, intercooler, and related piping would be.
    I also would love a liftback instead of a trunk so that I can fit things in it easier, but that probably won't happen until a Gen 3, if ever.
