This "connected" layered cut is one that I've done for over 45 years and it works for short, medium, longer hair and works for all hair densities and textures. It was great to see Stephan being so thorough.

I went to school in 1987 & this is how I learned to cut hair. I can't find anyone that can do this in Florida or South Carolina where I live now it's so frustrating! In a different video you said your clients can go 5 or 6 months between haircuts & I'm convinced that is the reason why 😂 I totally agree it's better to have your name attached to a really good haircut & a happy client that comes back to you & sends you other clients. I'm going to take your videos to the next hairdresser when I get brave enough to take a chance & let someone cut my hair 😢

How did you get the back though?

    • @pattii55
      @pattii55 2 роки тому +1

@@chelseavuchinich4859 I did it too. I part it in the middle down the back, and bring it forward then cut it even. Then I lean over to the left and then right and comb it straight down and see if there are any long stray pieces. I cut the layers by bringing chunks out to the side. It's not easy, and you need a hand mirror to check if you missed an area in the back. Can't do it exactly as he does because it's too difficult to section the back, but I could section the one upper guide and judged from there. Front was a lot easier of course.

P.s. I’ve just read so many of the comments and I’m floored by how much this cut is wanted!! Can you imagine if women could get what they ask for how many tips would be increased and clientele referrals a stylist doing this work can get? Moreover how much happier hundreds of women would be!!!!! We are really not asking for the moon 🙉. I wish I could do this on myself 😅

I live in New Jersey. I've had the same stylist for 25 or more years. He would do this cut on me every time. Watching you do this cut makes me think of him. I used to say it was like watching an artist, because he took so much time and did exactly what you did in this video. He gave such a great hair cut that I could go up to 6 months and my hair always looked great. Sadly he lost his battle with cancer this year. He was a wonderful stylist as well as a wonderful person. I used to tell him that he could never leave me, no matter how old we got. That I'd have someone wheel me in my wheel chair to his wheelchair to have him cut my hair, and we would laugh. I've not had a good hair cut since he became ill. I've had my hair cut several times since his illness and I feel there are just no stylist out there that want to take the time like he did.

Elizabeth Moore Oh, that is sad. Our hair stylists are our friends, often times. They know us, our hair, some of our stories. You grieve not only your comfort of his talent, but your sweet connection. I hope you find someone like this instructor. He is awesome! Being in this strange time of being housebound has presented so many challenges, trying to stay healthy, and pay the bills, etc. Then there is the interesting looks in color, layers, and bang length, etc. of my frizzy hair! Lol! Best to you all!
Thank you, sir, for this amazing educational clip! Bless you!

Bravo! You sir, are an artist. I accidentally found a stylist that did this exact cut for me 25 years ago. He trained with Vidal Sassoon. I had been searching for a good stylist and took a chance and walked into a men's hair replacement shop and asked. Low and behold they had a booth in the back for haircuts and let me tell you. Not only was the cut phenomenal, that guy had so much fun cutting my hair. He had passion. It was art for him. And he seemed to enjoy making me pretty. It lasted for months. When I returned he had gone back to New York. I have never gotten a good cut since. So today. I am going to try this myself until I can find a good stylist. Thank you for this video. If you lived by me I would pay the 150.00.

Omg thank you. I will never go to a new stylist again unless they're willing to watch this. Just got the worst cut of my life that was supposed to look like this and isn't even close. It's clear she had no idea how to do this properly. I had cut my own hair for years, and realized how close my process was to yours, but never just right. Now I'm pretty sure I can perfect it myself and not be at the mercy of someone else's lack of skills. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!!

I am cutting my hair after Steven's instructions for more than 4 yrs now, most of the time pretty much shorter than this model, and I have received sooo many compliments, especially from women who are unhappy with the hairdressers in our city. I refer all to "The Salon Guy" an UA-cam/Symmetric Layered Haircut. I had many requests for cutting those people's hair, but I refuse cutting other people's hair, even I prob. could make a lot of money just by cutting this one particular style. I am so glad that I found this channel and Steve's extensive explanations "how and why". 💕 Thank you, Steven! 💕

This is the haircut I need !!!! The longest TIME I’ve been looking through Pinterest, Google, UA-cam, Instagram, - this is what I’ve been wanting! Honestly, this is how they used to cut hair years ago. I walked in to a salon said I want it shaped and take off weight and I can remember even the way they would pull my hair in different directions cutting and checking.... this is how it was done. It felt so good like a brand new person. This is gorgeous ! Very feminine and soft, such beautiful work!! ✂️ 👌😍

This is an astonishing look. I would welcome seeing this video if I were a stylist. But it’s really you having an intuitive sense, a trained eye and untold hours of experience in practice. Because you’re doing your own camera work, I rewatch these to see if I can figure out what the perspective of the camera couldn’t catch. With that additional amount of detail, I would pay $100 for the recording. You would be doing all of us an additional service. Thank you so much in any case for a great performance.

I did this haircut on my own and it turned out great! I used a "Creaclip" hair tool ( to imitate the stylist's finger positioning technique) together with a hair trimmer, a hair scissor, a comb, a lot of hair scrunchies (to divide all the sections), also two mirrors and extra lighting i the bathroom. I watched this hair tutorial and wrote down all the steps. It took three days: I did one third of the steps the first day (length all around and face framing), the second day I did the back layers and the third day the top front, front layers and continued the front layers all around to mid back. My God, it was a lot of work (I had to take many brakes) but I am so pleased with the result. Thank You SalonGuy for your clear instructions. I am an amateur and still managed to give myself a decent haircut. Yay!

I can’t thank you enough for your videos & especially this one! Your instructions are perfect. I have a lot of hair but it’s fine with some natural wave. I’m 63 & have always battled with my hair (I seldom won!). Most times after a haircut by a stylist (& I’ve tried many) I would end up trimming & “fixing” what was wrong - no matter how much money I spent on the cut. I have cut my own hair periodically but without a real “method”. I found this UA-cam video & tried it twice now & each time I got a perfect cut!! My hair is chin length & needs lots of layers & this is the perfect video for that. For me, having a good hair day is everything. Again, thank you for taking the time to create this & for sharing your knowledge.

This is a great haircut. I was taught to cut layers two ways. One by maintaing weight thru the bottom by using my finger angle as my guide which is a great tool to have for long layers. My basic layering technique is creating my guide in thru the top and working in thru the bottom to connect it to the top. Find your technique master it and go with it. Whatever is most comfortable for u from there you can create anything.

Not that fun anymore. So, these videos are incredible. In fact, as good as my hair stylist is, I think this is even better. I am going to start by doing the longest hair cut with layers and after I get practiced, go back for the mid length. I think you are fantastic! I will be looking at color and products soon. I'm on my hubby's UA-cam right now, You TOTALLY get it. I agree with 100% of what you said. I am going to go cuckoo bananas if I see one more single length razored wavy lob. I cannot believe that hairdressers don't know how to cut layers like this nowadays. Excellent Work Sir! Having said all that I gave up 14 yrs ago getting my hair done because they just can't deliver this style and thorough quality. It takes me 2.5 hrs to do it to myself now with my husbands help, but at least its done good enough, grows out well, and is nice and full and thick. Please never take this video down. LOL.

Now, THAT is a haircut! So beautiful - what a difference. I’m not a hairdresser (not even close) but I have a wig that is too wild and doesn’t look good on me, but is a beautiful color and texture. I’m going to try this, even though I won’t come anywhere near yours. But I can at least try and do the best I can. Thanks to this video, I have a little better idea of how to do it. Thank you!

OMG - that is a beautiful haircut. I wish I could find a hairdresser in my area that knew how to cut a beautifully layered cut like that!!!!! That's what I've been looking for. I've let my hair grow out during this COVID phase, and I'd love to have that haircut. I have salt and pepper hair, and I know it'd be a perfect cut for me. What state/city are you in. And what is the name of your salon????

Yes, I'm a client just like that. I'm suffering with a botched chopped thinned out once thick hair. They always massacre it with thinning ✂ like they get frustrated how to layer. I'm frustrated with stylists.

Me to my hair was feathered instead of a curtain bang or swoppy bang, was told she blended a lot, I wanted this hair cut, and I’ve had two bad hair cuts and this last time I let my hair grow almost a year now it seems like i have to go to a pixi again, and I realy don’t want to!!!! So mad😡

I feel your pain! It happened to me so many times I honestly felt cursed! I've learned how to cut my own hair perfectly now (thx YT!) I'll never pay another hack to whack my locks again. You can do it too!

@@Kimosabe- That's great! What kind of haircut did you learn to give yourself--was it blended layers like this tutorial? I'm wondering how far we can go with at-home haircuts!
I too am done with getting my thick hair messed up, either left too thick or thin at the ends.

    • @streetofdreams4538

For those like us, an update to my previous comment: I got my mom to do a simple blunt cut slightly past shoulder length at home (on damp hair, in two horizontal sections, since my hair is thick--first the bottom section, then the top section cut to the bottom guide's length). Then, the most stressful part, we angled the front sides a bit from under the chin and downwards, a bit tricky and time-consuming with overdirecting thin vertical side sections forward and cutting the lengths to match the first guide beneath the chin. It ended up a bit shorter and chopper than expected in some places, but still ok--probably too much tension on the hair while cutting.
(I like vintage hair, so next time I might try UA-camr Sage Lilleyman's simple trick of tying all your hair in a ponytail under your chin and cutting it off straight across at about 3-4 inches below the base of your neck. Couldn't believe how great it turned out on her medium-thick hair!)
Lastly, to taper the ends, on my DRY hair I used a hair razor (the kind in haircutting kits with a safety guard, but you still have to be careful) following a UA-cam hairdresser's advice of combing the razor down the bottom lengths of my hair from the outside to thin it. Had to do it in about three horizontal sections because my hair was too thick for the razor, which took a while! And you have to be careful not to overdo it, but it was quite simple to do.
And voila! Finally the kind of not-too-tapered, not-too-blunt ends and overall haircut I wanted! (Great for setting in curls if you need weight removed from the ends, like me.) And it'll get even better with practice. Now I know it's possible!

Mr Salon Guy, thank you for your videos, I have watched probably 10, got the courage to attempt to cut my hair, and damned if it didn't turn out pretty good! Maybe not great, but for a first try, amazingly good! You asked in a video, if you yammered on, NO YOU DO NOT, PLEASE SAY EVERYTHING/KEEPTEACHING/GIVING EDUCATION....I loved it, thought it was so helpful! THANK YOU. I have no idea where you are located, but I would spend my hard earned money to have you as my beautician!!!

That is an awesome cut - I have longer curly freezy hair (hard to control in the Florida summer) - not sure if that length would work for me - maybe in a longer layer. I have copied your 45 deg angles and it has improved my hair tremendously I haven't been to a salon since I haven't found anyone that can layer well.

I had a similar layering and it was so nicely done. Next time they layered using a technique pulling back up higher up towards the crown instead of vertical and now it seems so disconnected in so many sections and doesn’t lay right.

Love this tutorial. A good quality haircut costs money. And you are right Steve it will grow out looking great! I had some very boring looking haircuts in the past where the layering was just non-existent . So, I now cut my own hair in quarantine by following online tutorials. Some 30 hrs( over 2 months of adjustments here and there) later it starts to have a flow. Thanks a bunch for sharing you did a fantastic job there! Greetings from the U.K.

Love this. You do amazing work. I have been on the receiving end of several unblended and disastrous layered cuts. This is exactly what I am looking for; so to help others, what specifically does a client ask for when they come in? How should they tell their stylist or a new stylist what they would like ? I think sometimes when clients ask they don't know how to ask for a specific cut and sometimes clients don't take into consideration the type of hair texture they have which could work against them . So, what should a client ask for for this specific cut?

This is the haircut my stylist used to give me. She said she framed my face and i do like my bangs shorter too. But the style didn’t turn out exactly the way i hoped it would. I checked for blending and it doesn’t appear to be blended, I’m too heavy after only 5 weeks since the cut. Whereas before i could grow it out for months and it still was good. She uses the thinning shears now and i don’t think that it works as well as blending it all the way down as you have shown in your video. Bravo for posting, love this video! Will try to pray my stylist will hit the mark for me next time.

NJ is a long way to go for a haircut from NM, even though you are unquestionably worth it! Any woman would pay $150, or more, for your passion, skill and attention to detail. I've never had any stylist blended my layers as you do, as much as I always dreamed of that kind of a haircut. So it makes sense why my cuts never seem quite right. I just wonder how my (now) too short sides/front can ever get long enough to truly blend with back without losing just-below-shoulder length. Adding to the challenge is blonde, super fine hair that has also thinned on sides, no doubt something you've dealt with women not as young as your manikin! Thanks so much for the search tips too, and wonderful benchmark you've set here!

This is exactly what I try to ask for every time I get my haircut. I've traveled to multiple cities across the U.S. for work and had my haircut countless times over the past 17 years. I could count on one hand the number of stylists that were able to accomplish that and I'd probably still have a couple fingers left over. I wish I could get a stylist to watch your video before cutting my hair or better yet be able to take a contract close to where you set up shop! ❤❤ I'd love to find a list of the salons that you've trained across the United States.
