Ok, one thing I learned recently is that adding layers for thin (low density) hair actually does wonders for fullness. The trick is to not layer all the hair, but only the top portion, so you keep some of the density at the ends while getting the benefit of movement on top. There are a bunch of UA-cam videos on it. I did this with my hair and it looks SO much better.
They will not grow significantly enough, just a couple centimetres. and each time the hairdresser will cut new hair, not the hair she/he previously. So after a while you end up with too much growing out layers and thin ends.
Just a personal opinion but i'm so over layers. I tried having layers for years and it never looked good. I finally have long one length hair and my hair never looked better. Also with my hair type (fine hair but lots of it and mostly straight with just a hint of a wave pattern sometimes) i have a lot more volume with no layers. Layers make me look like i have hair loss. But i have also seen people who look good with layers. Definitely depends on your type.
@@susannpatton2893 Does it cling to your head with no volume? How do you manage quick to grease roots? Especially if you go to the gym and such. I have been wanting to grow my baby fine and not the thickest kind of hair super long, but I can’t stand how it clings to my head with no bounce and unevenness of the grease level from root to ends
I also have baby fine and decently thin hair. I also do a blunt cut. I also find some highlights (if you are quick to grease) does wonders for the grease effect and the volume appearance. Making your hair a little less sleek on a subtle level (without over doing it with any damage) makes an appearance of more volume and density. Balayage can look bad, ends slightly drier and more volume appearance, and top is healthy with more grease, thus more flathead effect. And darker colors are slimming, lighter colors make a larger effect (this is true of clothing and hair). If you are lighter skinned, the lighter hair can make any visible scalp less noticeable, added bonus. You don’t have to go too light either, can always do highlights and a permanent hair dye thereafter to bring the highlights down to a bit more of a natural level, same effect.
I quit going to hairdressers because when I ask for layers, they leave the ends of my hair feeling too thin. I like a blunt cut with face framing layers, and I do that on myself, sometimes a little light long laying in the back. Doesn't matter what my face shape is I know how I feel in a certain haircut.
Aha moment! Just learned why I’ve always preferred long, relatively blunt hair despite having a long face. 1. I’ve got a weak jawline, 2. I’ve got wide shoulders and, 3. I’ve got fine hair. These 3 things are mentioned to be ”exceptions to the rule” in the video. Thanks for confirming the feeling I’ve always had with facts!

Absolutely love your new hairstyle. Perfect! I was trying to grow my hair again, which looks ok in a bob - but a bit too classical. Long hair is good, but always layered. But I love my head shape, face and neck best when hair is either pulled back or cut pretty short. Not sure why, but anyway, interesting content. 😃
Just wanted to say as I’m sure other people will agree that you are getting more beautiful by the day my dear Jen. You seem to have really completely and utterly discovered your beauty and what works best for you which is what you are so wonderfully teaching us with your fabulous unique and knowledgeable content. You are truly stunning and your confidence and certitude is inspiring and empowering thank you ❤️
For years I have been wondering why I prefer pulling my hair back, even though I have a longer, diamond shape face! It is because my lower third is most prominent. And I always ask my hairdresser to thin out my hair around my jawline, but I couldn't explain why I like this. Thank you, jenn!
This is my favourite styling channel, I honestly learn so much. The facial thirds thing was a complete revelation to me, and I finally understood my own face! Thank you :)
I have a square/ round face and any length shorter than to my arm emphasizes the size of my face. The best hair type is to have it down and thrown to the front to cover the sides of the face. The only thing I can do to not look good in long hair is to curl or wave hair, the same effect - it shows up the sides of the face.
For the last years, I've always gotten layers. I neeeeed a lot of volume in my hair, since I have a tiny head and broad shoulders. Layers are such an easy way to have more volume, or at least it is for my wavy hair.
As always, I loved this video! I hesitate to get layers just because of the time it takes to grow them out, but I do think layers would suit me better. You’re pushing me out of my comfort zone again Jenn!(in the best way) 😂❤
Your layers look great! I am growing my hair out from bob to pixie over the past year and a half. Longer hair with layers is my goal. Praying to get through this "awkward phase" as gracefully as possible as I am also embracing my naturally curly texture.
As someone with thick wavy hair, layers are the best thing that happened to my hair. As a kid, my mom would keep my hair boy short so I started growing it when I was in 5th grade. For years I had lower back length hair that couldn't be tamed so it was always in some braid. A few months ago I decided to cut my hair mid back length and get layers, and not only is my hair easier to take care of but the ends curl beautifully while the top remains straight
Awesome video! You always choose such great examples to describe your meaning. And you just explained why I've always liked myself better with long hair. I could never really put a finger on it, but now I know that its because I have broad shoulders and a short neck with fine hair. The length balances me out thankfully. Plus the width of my lower third is narrow. Always thought I looked terrible with short hair.
I have a slightly long face and years ago I wanted to add some width and volume with a bob. But my hair is very fine textured and wavy just from the lenght, so it resulted even more flat! Also having a narrow forehead makes my hair lay just on my face hiding even more my features, and layers also tend to have the same effect if too short. However I don't mind longer layers, but since I'm starting to appreciate my strong jawline I would do the opposite to emphasize it instead!
My hair is fine/med but thick & heavy. It has a natural S curve beachy wave to it if layered. I just don't have the spoons to deal with blow drying & straightening or curling & just let it be whatever it's going to be that day. Longer layers cut in a more vertical way & thinning scissors really help to keep it from being too flat on top & puffy on the bottom (triangular) I'm not wearing it as long as I once did (waist length) but I still keep it slightly longer than shoulder length. I tried straight across bangs to widen my long face but that shortened my upper third even more, so now I just have some cheekbone grazing layers in the front that look nice if I wear my hair up or brushed back. I really admire sleek, smoothe hairstyles on others but dislike them on me. You shouldn't have to fight your hair's natural texture all the time, a good haircut is key.
Your videos are my favourites!!! So much information without crazy music and distracting elements. It's so easy to follow and so calm and ... high-quality. Thank you so much for sharing everything with us ❤ I hope you'll have a nice weekend
PLEASE make a video on curly hair. I've noticed curly hair just doesn't look as good on me as straight hair does. I have a square/oval face and I cant find a way to make my natural curls flatter me.
Hi Jenn, would you consider making a video specifically focusing on long philtrums? I have pretty equal thirds, but I feel like my philtrum completely throws the proportions off (I have a slightly protruding mouth area as well, so it draws a lot of attention). I know you mention long philtrums in many of your videos, but I feel like it would be amazing to have a complete guide. Thank you a lot, amazing video as always!
There are reasons for and reasons against layers for me. Square jaw but short neck. Yang but a rather short forehead. Strong shoulders but already less hair at the ends of my waist length hair. I guess the best would be very subtle layers then? I have medium contrast (light skin but a bit tan. Mixed blonde tones).

I struggle with having the appearance of a very small head in comparison to my body, especially because of my broad shoulders, but I don't like having my hair too long or always down, what can I do? If someone knows I'd be grateful. I cannot for the life of me find an answer.
Perhaps styles that can prevent the shoulders from appearing broader, like darker colors, deep V-necks, nothing that adds more width to the shoulders - for example I always opt for a tank top or a form-fitting long sleeve than a looser-fit T-shirt because the sleeves on some T-shirt designs can add more width to my shoulders

you are so right, it’s always an issue for me.
I feel like the woman in the video has the same issue. Her longer layers look thin and too wispy.

Umm the problem with layering wavy or curly hair is that it encourages frizz and that makes your hair bush out so it does not always reduce volume...
EXACTLY
9:30 what if you have fine hair texture AND high density 😅 i have very soft, fine, silky strands but ALOT of it!
I think it comes down to the overall volume in the end! ☺️
Am I the only one who thinks that her hair would look better with less layers? To me it looks very thin.
Same..her hair looks.to thin now..as if she is suffering from hairloss and it is ageing her
Nah it's rebellious and chic. I focus more on her beautiful face now.
It does look thin but it looks really good compared to no layers. It makes her look more lifted
Informative.
Interesting about fine hair that you say it might be not suitable for fine hair, but you also have fine hair and it looks nice, even though the volume is really reduced?:)
I have coarse hair actually! I also forgot to mention that I have an undercut so I’d say about 1/3 of the natural volume is missing already 😝
