  • Fuel filter and fuel pump replacement can be scary, but it's really not hard. I will show you how to remove the in tank fuel pump, and fuel level sender, how to install a fuel pump and seal, I will also show you how to replace a fuel filter, which should be done when the pump is replaced. This is on my MK3 VW GTI

    The video on "Hack Fuel Pump Upgrades" is coming soon. Also, I recommend watching the first 2 minutes from great tips and safety issues when working with fuel, but if you feel you need to skip ~ ua-cam.com/video/tNixH-9CdoE/v-deo.htmlm12s the DIY starts there.

    I have an entirely separate issue - mechanic says I need to fix sensor to shut off my VW's engine light so it passes smog - but I watched this whole video anyway because I found it rly interesting. You're a GREAT teacher - your step-by-step instructions are clear, easy to follow, and I like that you point out all the precautions one should take. Now, if only I could learn to fix the sensor myself!

    • @HumbleMechanic

      Thanks. What sensor is it?

    • @nivita9830
      @nivita9830 6 років тому +1

      I'm guessing it's the oxygen sensor (not sure) but mechanic seemed to think fixing the sensor on my VW Cabrio 2000 would make the engine light go away. After initial diagnostic, he thought it was vac hoses, so I paid $150 ($125 just for labor) to fix those and that didn't work, so now he thinks it's the sensor.

    A tip on undoing the ring or any metal locating ring
    Use 2 large flat blade screws drivers, one in each hand, cross the tips of the screw drivers like you are crossing a knife and fork and engage each screw driver tip on 2 lugs 180 degree from each other.
    Twist it off. The screw driver shafts act as a fulcrum to each other..
    It's on old trick to take the lids of 44 gallon drums but i found it works for fuel pump rings too and means you don't need to hit the lugs or damage them and the thread doesn't bind if you are using 2 lugs opposite one another at the same time.

    A trick I like to do is take off the fuel sender rod, put that in first, then put the pump in, and finally snap the fuel sendor rod back on the top section.
    Also, those hose clambs seen at the fuel pomp can be easily taken off with some pincers, just grab the locking section from the top, and move your pincers along the clamp making the clamp pop loose. They're actually reusable after that

    Mark II golf, fuel pump replacement video would be amazing. I recall having to look high and low for the secondary fuel pump housing. Two pumps? Yeah, that threw me. Had to replace both pumps, an ignition coil and a heater core. Some how I kept getting "extra" mounting screws and bolts every time I took that thing apart. Finally had to say goodbye to that nickel and dime eater, when I found a Mark V. Now this 150k hatch is giving me the coolant and fuel system leak run around.

    Buddy, I just replaced mine to the letter and the car started after the 5th try as I was checking for leaks it died! Still got the low pressure codes so I went and got a new revised control module. The fuel system is priming when I turn the key and the rpm goes up a fraction, but there’s just no spark! I never had a problem starting the car and only a slight idling problem before. Spark plugs are 18k old with new coils. Not sure what the heck is going on

    I know this,always use the OEM fuel pump.The aftermarkets are flat out junk and Airtex is one example of this.Those clamps,there a special pair of pliers to release and put them back in,Astro Pnuematic is one that makes this pair of pliers for them.Replacing the fuel filter if it has one is part of the warranty on the new fuel replacement.

    Hoping you can help me with correct fuel pressure testing on a Califirnia 2006 2.5 vw beetle with the filter located inside the metal tank. The Chilton book states to check the pressure underneath vehicle and tap into the filter/regulator outside the tank for proper pressure check. Since the filter is inside the tank on mine I'm confused. The car does have a fuel rail with a Schrader valve port, but I'm reading that it's main purpose is to bleed the system not to get correct pressure. I did however still tap into it with my gauge and it reads 45psi at idle then drops when I give it gas sign of a bad pump, but not 100%. The specs call for the pressure to be 58psi any help will be appreciated. Thanks

    I’m not sure with what’s wrong with my work truck. Runs fine for like 10-15 minutes, and then it starts to act up. The truck sputters when I accelerate and can sometimes shut the engine off while in drive when I take off like at a light or stop sign, but this is rare. Flooring the pedal makes me go almost no where, which prevents me from overtaking another vehicle. All of this happens when the temperature is hot outside. Whenever there’s cool weather, this never happens. Any idea what’s the problem?

    Question. So out of nowhere, my 2001 gti doesn't want to stay running, unless I give it gas. The immobilizer light won't stay on, and it does the same when I connected it to a new battery. I changed the fuel filter with no difference. I believe on the throttle the High-pressure pump sucks the fuel in reducing the PWM cycle. My diagnosis is the fuel pump is dying. Am I Correct?

    Any tips on troubleshooting the level sender? I replaced my pump in my mk3 VR this spring with a new one and the gauge has been off ever since - reads 1/4 empty at full empty. Besides checking for sender clearance inside and the top arrow orientation on the plate, anything else I should look for?

    • @HumbleMechanic
      @HumbleMechanic  6 років тому

      You can measure the resistance of the sender, but I usually like to take the level sender out, and run it through the full range, and watch the gauge. You have to make sure you don't have power at the pump because you don't want a fuel mess.

    Dear Humble Mechanic; I have a 2007 Passat 2.0 t and today I learned about a kind of a charcoal filter and some valves in the way to the fuel tank, from the fuel filler opening.
    When I fill the gas tank, Lately I been having some problem to re start the engine. The problem seems to disappear in subsequent starting . Only after filling the tank an once.
    I came back to te VW shop, they connected the computer and try to find why the Engine Check indicator was on again! Now they tell me that I have to change that filter, because it will get eventually to the point of no Re starting the engine at all, and I will have to get the car towed for repair !
    Does this story tell you something familiar with this malfunction?

      Never put a petroleum based lubricant on a rubber seal unless you know for a fact it’s compatible. That will cause it to degrade faster and fail if you don’t know what you’re doing.
      Always use a silicone based lubricant like a Parker o-ring lube.
      Similarly brake Clean on plastic is a bad idea it will cause that plastic ring to crack if it’s not compatible.
      Engineers spend a lot time testing and specifying what is and isn’t compatible with polymers for a reason.

      Peter Matteson I believe petroleum products on rubber may make it swell, not degrade
